The components for this compact model are carefully designed and organized to provide high
efficiency and safe operation. You will find all the major components illustrated in this section.
For a list of parts and part numbers, please refer to the HEEGM Parts List (see section “8 Related
Documents”), available on our website @ www.Garland-Group.com
4.1 Important Features
The features listed below are referenced in the illustrations in “4.1.2 Major Components”.
1
Ignition wires are protected by a metal wire-way and high temperature silicone sleeve.
2
The flue at the back of the unit prevents overheating of the unit and its components.
3
The removable side shields contribute to even temperature and easy cleaning. The side
shields also prevent the cooking grates, when placed in the elevated position, from sliding
off the side of the unit.
4
Solenoid valves connected in series, provide redundancy and ensure safe operation.
5
Left/Right Side Leg Panels are installed using a tab and slot method at the back, which can be
dislodged and slid out easily when servicing the unit.

5 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
5.1 Sequence of Operation
This section helps you to get familiar with the mechanical and electrical controls, and the
operations of the HEEGM broiler. For a comprehensive overview of the HEEGM operation, please
use this section together with the Wiring Diagrams in section “7 Wiring Diagrams”.
To find out where the major components are installed, see “4.1.2 Major Components.
Operation Sequence:
The sequence numbers are referenced in the illustrations on the following two pages.
1
Turn on the gas and electrical controls using the burners ON/OFF switch(es).
220-240V models have a Main Power Switch, which has to be turned on before the ON/OFF
switch(es) for the burners can be energized.

A 48” or 60” model has TWO burner control switches. The LEFT and RIGHT switches work
independently. See illustrations on page 12.
48” Model: The LEFT Switch controls burners# 1-4. The RIGHT Switch controls burners# 5-9.
60” Model: The LEFT Switch controls burners# 1-6. The RIGHT Switch controls burners# 7-11.
2
When switched on, electrical power is routed to the solenoid gas valves. The solenoid valves
open and distribute gas, through the manifold(s) to each mechanical Hi-Low gas valve.
i
The mechanical Hi-Low GAS VALVES have NO OFF POSITION; they ARE ALWAYS OPEN.
All units are factory set for optimal flame size. Each burner is evaluated for full flame kernel
combustion appearance through adjustment of the burner air shutter (see “6.5 Burner and Air
Shutter”).
3
When switched on, electrical power is also routed to the ignition module(s), which supplies
high voltage energy to each electrical ignitor, generating a spark. Each ignitor will continue to
spark until a flame is established at all burners.
i
Once flame has been established at all burners, the sparking will stop. However,
the module will continue to monitor and sense each flame. If the flame at any burner is
extinguished, the ignition module will re-start the spark cycle.
4
If all burners have come on, we can conclude that the unit is working properly. All port flame
kernels should exhibit complete combustion — pure blue flame with no or minimum yellow.
If the appearance of the flame is abnormal, adjust the burner air shutter (see “6.5 Burner and
Air Shutter”).

6.4 Gas Pressure Regulator & Gas Pressure
6.4.1 General Information
Gas pressure regulators have two main
purposes: to reduce supply main pressure to safe
operating pressures of connected appliances;
and to maintain constant downstream pressure,
regardless of changes in the gas flow or
upstream pressure variations.

i
i
i
i
IMPORTANT
There is a directional requirement for
gas pressure regulator. Ensure the
gas flows throw the regulator in the
correct direction.
i
IMPORTANT
Gas service suppliers usually supply gas pressure higher than the safe
operating pressures of connected appliances. Always refer to the rating
plates of appliance for the actual manifold pressure required.
6.4.2 HEEGM Gas Regulator Specific Information
The regulator supplied with the unit is rated for a maximum of ½ PSI (14” WC, 3.45kPa). If the
gas supply line pressure exceeds this maximum, a step down regulator is required and must be
installed in accordance with local codes.
The red air-vent cap is part of the regulator and should not be removed, unless local codes
require external venting. If external venting is required, install in accordance with local codes.
The pipe size is ¾” (19.05mm) NPT for all models.
To ensure optimal operation of this unit, it is recommended that the dynamic gas supply
pressure into the appliance regulator is a minimum of 1” WC higher than the pressure stated
on the rating plate.
6.4.3 Gas Regulator and Gas Pressure Adjustments
Problem with gas regulator and pressure would affect temperature and performance of the unit.
It is important to check if the problem is caused by defective parts, improper connections, or main
supply.
WARNING
Prior to replacing the regulator, disconnect electrical power and shut off
main gas supply to the unit.
DANGER
Be sure to check for gas leaks after installing a new regulator. Check all
gas connections for leaks using a soap solution. Do not use an open
flame to check for leaks.

To check manifold pressure and adjust regulator
i
IMPORTANT When adjusting gas pressure, all gas utilizing equipment should be
on during adjustments. This will ensure burners are getting correct gas pressures
during a system load.
FOR HEEGM 24” & 36” UNITS
1. Check the pressure value on the unit’s rating plate: 4.5” WC (Natural); 10” WC (Propane).
2. Remove knobs and the valve panel (see sections 6.1 and 6.2).
WARNING Remove power supply to the unit before opening panels for servicing.
3. Connect a manometer to the test spigot on the manifold.
4. Restore power supply to the unit. Then turn on the unit and set ALL the burners to HIGH.
5. Check the manometer reading:
If the manometer reading matches the pressure value stated on the rating plate, then no
adjustment is necessary.
If the manometer reading does not match the pressure value, adjust the regulator pressure
by rotating the pressure adjustment screw on the regulator. See illustration in “6.4.1
General Information.
To increase pressure, turn the adjustment screw clockwise.
To decrease pressure, turn the screw counter-clockwise.
FOR HEEGM 48” & 60” UNITS
1. Check the pressure value on the unit’s rating plate: 4.5” WC (Natural); 10” WC (Propane).
2. Remove knobs and the valve panel (see sections 6.1 and 6.2).
WARNING Remove power supply to the unit before opening panels for servicing.
3. Connect a manometer to the test spigot on the LEFT manifold, which controls the set of
burners on the left side (burners 1-4 on 48”; 1 - 6 on 60”). See illustrations in “5.1 Sequence of
Operation or the Wiring Diagrams in section “7 Wiring Diagrams”.
4. Restore power supply to the unit. Then turn on the LEFT SIDE of the unit ONLY (use the LEFT
SWITCH) and set the burners to HIGH.

6.5 Burner and Air Shutter
The HEEGM broiler is made up of long gas burners with various sized ports, covered by cast iron
radiants. Stainless steel air baffles are anchored to the bottom of the burners with cotter pins. See
section “4 Unit Configuration.
Air Baffles under the burner direct heat upward for efficiency. Note that the left, right, and middle
secondary baffles are all shaped differently. When ordering new parts, please refer to the HEEGM
parts list for details (see “8 Related Documents”).
Each cast-iron burner is individually controlled by a manual High-Low Gas Valve, with NO OFF
position.
6.5.1 Burner BTU Output
Each cast-iron burner outputs:
14,500BTU for natural gas.
13,000BTU for propane gas.
6.5.2 Removing, Installing Burners and Radiants
Each burner is supported at the front by the injector (orifice)
on the manual hi-low gas valve.
Each burner is also supported by a rear bracket, and
locked in place with a cotter pin. Remove these pins before
attempting to remove the burners.
i
IMPORTANT INSTALL PIN
To ensure burners don’t tilt during operation, re-install
the cotter pins at the back of the burners.
