If it is no longer possible to operate the product safely, stop using it and
prevent unauthorized use. Safe operation can no longer be guaranteed
if the product:
- is visibly damaged,
- is no longer working properly,
- has been stored for extended periods in poor ambient conditions or
- has been subjected to any serious transport-related stresses.
Always handle the product carefully. Jolts, impacts or a fall even from a
low height may damage the product.
Always observe the safety and operating instructions of any other
devices which are connected to the product.
Never move the product with an installed hard disk drive when the latter
is in operation. Doing so may make the read/write heads on the hard disk
drive touch the magnetic disk. This may lead to data loss and damage
the hard disk drive. Turn the product off and wait at least 30 seconds
(until the magnetic disks in the hard disk drive have stopped rotating)
before you move the product.
Do not place the product in the proximity of speakers or machines that
radiate a strong magnetic eld.
Only touch the casing on the sides of the hard drive; do not touch the
circuit board. Electrostatic discharges may destroy your hard drive.
When setting up the product, make sure that the cable is not pinched,
kinked or damaged by sharp edges.
Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold
room into a warm one. The condensation generated could destroy the
product. Allow the product to reach room temperature before connecting
it and putting it to use. This may take several hours.
Use suitable padding to protect the surfaces of valuable furniture against
scratches and dents.
Consult a technician if you are not sure how to use or connect the product.
Maintenance, modications and repairs are to be performed exclusively
by an expert or at a qualied shop.
If you have questions which remain unanswered by these operating
instructions, contact our technical support service or other technical
personnel.

Connection
Some notebooks supply less than 500 mA per USB port. In this case, it is
possible that the hard drive may not start or be recognised. Use a USB hub
with its own mains adapter to ensure an adequate current supply should
this be the case.
Turn on the computer. Wait until the operating system is completely booted up.
Connect the 2 USB plugs that are connected via the short, thin cable, with 2 free
USB ports on your computer (or with a USB hub with its own mains adapter).
Connect the remaining USB plug with the product.
The operating system automatically recognises the product upon rst use and
installs the necessary drivers. The drivers are already included in your operating
system.
A new hard drive has to be rstly partitioned and formatted before the drive
is displayed in Explorer and can be used; see the next section.
Partitioning/formatting the hard disk drive
In Windows
®
, you can partition and format the hard drive via the Control Panel.
First, make a new partition.
Then format the newly created partition. A quick format is sufcient. Depending
on the capacity of the hard disk drive, a regular format may take a long time to
complete.
Consult a technician if you are unsure about partitioning/formatting the hard disk
drive.
Tips and notes
a) USB 2.0
USB 2.0 devices are backward compatible. This means that the product with the
installed hard disk also works with USB 1.1 ports. However, the transfer speed will
be reduced accordingly.
If you are connecting the product to a USB hub, the USB hub must support the
USB 2.0 standard in order to provide the maximum transfer speed.
b) General information
As soon as the hard drive housing is switched on, the LED lights up.
The LED ashes during read/write access.
Note that les may be damaged and the operating system may crash if the
connection cable is disconnected when data is being transferred. Always unmount
the hard disk drive via the operating system before disconnecting the connection
cable.
Always handle hard disk drives carefully. Vibrations during use and even a few
seconds after the hard disk drive has turned off may make the read/write heads
touch the magnetic disk, which can destroy the hard disk drive.
When connecting the hard disk drive for the rst time, it may take approximately
one minute for the hard disk drive to be recognised. This time may vary depending
on the operating system.
If necessary, attach the included self-adhesive housing feet to the bottom of the
product.
Care and cleaning
Before cleaning, unplug the product from the operating system. Wait at least
30 seconds until the magnetic plates on the hard disk drive have come to a
complete standstill. Disconnect the USB plug from the computer.
Never use aggressive detergents, rubbing alcohol or other chemical solutions, as
these may damage the casing or cause the product to malfunction.
The product does not require maintenance except for occasional cleaning.
Use a dry, lint-free cloth to clean the product.
Disposal
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be placed in
household waste. Always dispose of the product according to the relevant
statutory regulations.
You thus full your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of
the environment.
