Introduction & Machine Speci cations
Clarke’s newly designed Ultra Speed 20 and 20T burnishers are ef cient and superior oor burnishing
machines. The Ultra Speed 20 uses one pad to burnish a path 20 inches wide. The powder created
by burnishing is collected by a dust control system in the pad housing. The Ultra Speed 20 burnishers
come complete with three - 12 volt batteries, one pad driver, and one operator’s manual.

HOW TO PREPARE THE MACHINE FOR OPERATION
How To Install The Batteries
This machine uses three 12-volt batteries. The batteries are
located in the battery compartment under the battery cover.
WARNING: Lifting batteries without help
could result in an injury. Get help to lift
the batteries. The batteries are heavy.
WARNING: Working with batteries can be
dangerous. Always wear eye protection
and protective clothing when working
near batteries. NO SMOKING!
To Install the batteries, follow this procedure:
1. Make sure the key switch is in the OFF position (O).
2. Carefully lift the batteries into the battery tray. Arrange
as shown in gure 5.
3. Install the battery cables as shown in gure 5, with the
terminals marked "P" on the positive battery posts and
the terminals marked "N" on the negative batter posts.
Position the cables so that the caps can be easily re-
moved when it is necessary to add water to the batter-
ies.
4. Tighten the nut on each battery terminal just enough to
keep the terminal from being turned on the battery post.
Then tighten the nut one more full turn.
5. Coat all the terminals and posts with grease, petroleum
jelly or spray on battery coating (available in most auto
parts stores).
6. Put on the black rubber "boots" over each of the termi-
nals and use the plastic tie straps to hold them in place.
7. Join the connector from the battery pack to the connec-
tor on the control panel.
8. Reassemble machine.
NOTE: Charge the batteries before using the machine.
How To Charge The Batteries
WARNING: Charging the batteries in an area with-
out adequate ventilation could result in
an explosion. To prevent an explosion,
charge the batteries only in an area with
good ventilation.
WARNING: Lead acid batteries generate gases
which could explode. Keep sparks and
ames away from batteries. NO SMOK-
ING!
Connect the charger to a properly grounded single phase (3-
wire) wall receptacle having the voltage, frequency, and ampere
capacity speci ed on the nameplate of the charger.

HOW TO PREPARE THE MACHINE FOR OPERATION
How To Install The Pad
To install or remove pad on the machine, follow this pro-
cedure (see steps 1 - 6 in Figure 6):
1. Turn the key switch off "O".
2. Put the machine in the position shown (2) to accss
the pad retainer.
3. Go to the front of the machine. While holding the
pad retainer with one hand, rotate the pad and pad
driver counter clockwise to loosen the pad retainer.
4. Remove the old pad and install a new one, being
careful to center it on the outside diameter of the
pad driver. NOTE: Vibration could occur if you
center the hole in the pad to the opening for
the pad retainer. Always use a high quality pad
rated to operate at 2000 rpm.
5. Retighten the pad retainer as tight as possible.
6. Raise the back of the machine to lower the pad
housing by lifting as shown (6).
Dust Bag Installation (see gure 7)
Install dust collector bag on top of control housing. The
dust collection system will not operate properly if the col-
lector bag is full or torn.
Adjusting Pad Pressure
The pad pressure is set at the factory for optimal burnish-
ing with most pad and nish combinations. If unique pad
or nish conditions require pad pressure adjustments,
adjust by following the procedure below. NOTE: Pad
pressure adjustments should be performed by a quali ed
service technician. (see gure 8):
1. Turn the key switch off "O".
2. From underneath burnisher, loosen jam nut (A).
3. To decrease pad pressure, turn bolt (B) clockwise.
4. To increase pad pressure, turn bolt (B) counter-
clockwise.
5. Re-tighten jam nut (A).

HOW TO OPERATE THE MACHINE
How To Operate the Ultra Speed 20 (non-traverse)
1. Turn the key switch "ON".
2. When either pad power switch ( 1 - gure 9) is pushed
in, the pad motor will start.
3. Push the machine forward and guide it with the control
handles.
4. To reverse the direction, stop the machine by pulling
back on the control handles and then pulling the ma-
chine backwards.
5. When you stop the machine, be sure to turn the key
switch off.
How To Operate the Ultra Speed 20T (traverse)
1. Turn the key switch "ON".
2.
Turn the pad power switch on (1 - gure 10).
3. When either the right or left pad/traverse switch (2 -
gure 10) is pushed in, the pad motor will start and the
traverse motor will propel the machine forward.
4. Control the speed of traverse by using the speed con-
trol knob (3 - gure 10).
5. To stop, release the pad/traverse switch.
6. To reverse the machine, push in the traverse reverse
switch (4 - gure 10) and either the right or left pad/tra-
verse switch (2 - gure 10) at the same time.

Battery Maintenance
The electrical power to operate the machine
comes from the storage batteries. Storage
batteries need preventive maintenance.
WARNING: Working with batteries can be
dangerous. Always wear eye
protection and protective clothing
when working near batteries.
NO SMOKING!
To maintain the batteries in good condition, follow these
instructions:
1. Keep the electrolyte at the correct level. The correct
level is between 1/4" below the bottom of the tube in
each cell and above the tops of the plates. Check
the level of the electrolyte each time you charge the
batteries. See gure 11.
NOTE: Check the level of electrolyte prior to charging the
batteries. Be sure the plates in each cell are covered with
electrolyte . Do not top off the cells prior to charging the
battery. Electrolyte expands during charging. As a result,
the electrolyte could over ow from the cells. Always top
off the cells with distilled water after charging.
CAUTION: Irreversible damage will occur to
the batteries if the electrolyte level
does not cover the plates. Keep the
electrolyte at the correct level.
CAUTION: Machine damage and discharge
across the tops of the batteries
can occur if the batteries are lled
above the bottom of the tube in
each cell. Do not ll the batteries
up to the bottom of the tube in each
cell. Wipe any acid from the ma-
chine or the tops of the batteries.
Never add acid to a battery after
installation.
CAUTION: Tap water may contain contami-
nants that will damage batteries.
Batteries must be refilled with
distilled water only.

2. Keep the tops of the batteries clean and dry.
Keep the terminals and connectors clean.
To clean
the top of the batteries, use a damp cloth with a
weak solution of ammonia or bicarbonate
of soda
solution. To clean the terminals and connectors,
use a terminal and connector cleaning tool. Do
not allow ammonia or bicarbonate of soda to get
into batteries.
3. Keep the batteries charged.
CAUTION! The battery charger must be
reprogrammed when switching
from lead acid to AGM batteries.
See the Charger Manual for
instructions.
Do These Procedures When You End Your Work
Check the batteries and add distilled water as needed.
The correct level is within 1/4 inch of the bottom of the
tube in each cell.
CAUTION: Tap water may contain contaminants
that will damage batteries. Batter-
ies must be re- lled with distilled
water only.
WARNING: Lead acid batteries generate gases
which can cause an explosion.
NO SMOKING. Always wear eye
protection and protective clothing
when working near batteries.
Use a clean cloth and wipe the surface of the
machine.
