Welcome to Behringer!
Thank you very much for expressing your confidence in Behringer products by purchasing the ULTRAFEX CAR. We
are one of the leading manufacturers of professional recording studio equipment, and are very glad to welcome you as
our customer in this new field of application. Like all our products for studio and sound reinforcement systems, the
Behringer ULTRAFEX CAR was designed and manufactured with highest care and by using state-of-the-art tech-
niques. Additionally, the unit is manufactured in compliance with a ISO9000 certified management system.
1. Installation
1.1 Installation in the vehicle
With the two brackets located in the package, any kind of suspension-type installation can be realized, but of course
the ULTRAFEX CAR can also be mounted horizontally, and even vertically to a wall in which case, however, its
operation is less convenient. To find the most suitable method of installation, please slacken the screws on the one
side of the ULTRAFEX CAR´s case, adjust the bracket as required and fasten the screws, before you mount the other
bracket on the opposite side of the case.
+ Slackening all four screws holding the brackets makes it possible to remove the cover of the unit, which
will immediately void any warranty rights! So please take care not to fasten both brackets at the same
time!
Having adjusted the brackets as required, you can mount the unit in your vehicle using some kind of tapping screws. A
good location can certainly be found below the dashboard or in the glove box. Take care not to damage any important
parts such as cables which may be mounted behind the surface of installation.
1.2 Electrical connection
The ULTRAFEX CAR is inserted between the car radio or preamplifier and the power amp. The illustration (fig. 1) below
gives you a detailed description of how to wire the unit. Use a RCA-type cable coming from the car radio or preamp to
connect the ULTRAFEX CAR. Only use shielded cables to avoid interference problems. As an alternative to the car
radios line output you could also use the speaker outputs on the radio to connect them to the inputs of the ULTRAFEX
CAR. In this case, however, the switch on the rear of the unit must be set to position FROM AMPLIFIER (see chapter
3 for a detailed description of this switch). Use another high-quality RCA cable to connect the outputs of the ULTRAFEX
CAR to the inputs of your power amplifier.

To supply the unit with power please connect the red cable from the ULTRAFEX CAR to the +12 V supply of your
vehicle, and connect the green cable to the remote or antenna control output of your car radio. The black cable is used
to connect the unit to the vehicles mass (negative pole). If possible, connect the mass of the ULTRAFEX CAR directly
to the car radio rather than to any parts of the car body or the ground terminal of the power amp. This gives you best
protection against interference often generated by other parts of electrical equipment used in cars.

2. Functional principle
The Behringer ULTRAFEX CAR Virtual Acoustic Sound Processor uses a so-called enhancer circuit to add a phase-
shifted signal portion to the original signal, an effect which is perceived by the human brain as a wider sound image.
In the ULTRAFEX CAR this circuit is particularly sophisticated, as phase shifting takes place on several stages and is
frequency-dependent. Thus, the music signal is greatly enhanced in its liveliness.
Often, music recordings are subjected to several copy and processing stages reducing the acoustic transparency and
punch of bass signals, in particular. To counter this effect the ULTRAFEX CAR uses a dedicated bass processor
considerably enhancing the low range in terms of definition and power.
In cars it is impossible to find speaker positions that suit the characteristics of human hearing, which greatly deteriorates
the spatial perception of the music signal. For this reason, the ULTRAFEX CAR integrates a special Surround Processor
which can be used to enlarge the stereo basis enormously.
3. Control elements

Fig. 2: Front panel control elements
1
With the EFFECT switch you can make an A/B comparison between original and processed signals. Set the
switch to position Out to disable the entire processing circuitry of the ULTRAFEX CAR including the Surround
Processor.
2
Use the SUPER BASS control to determine the processing frequency of the bass processor. Position Ultralow
allows for processing only low-end signals, while higher frequencies are additionally included when the control
is set to position Low (kick bass).
3
The BASS LEVEL control allows for adding the processed bass signal.
+ The bass processor should be used with extreme care: excessive use can destroy your speakers and/or
amplifier system, as the amplified sub-bass frequencies are quite a load for amps and woofers. Always
use the bass processor moderately and observe the power rating of your system!
4
Use the HI TUNE control to determine the starting frequency for treble range processing. The optimum setting
depends on the speakers used. With settings that process the signal down to the midrange, however, the
sound can become clanked if the speakers tend to emphasize this range anyway (which is often the case with
car speakers). So, youd better try the Hi setting first.
5
With the HI LEVEL control you can determine how much enhancer effect is applied to the treble range. Here,
too, less can be more. At first, extreme high-frequency processing may sound impressive, but soon your ears
will show signs of listening fatigue. So, we recommend that you process the treble range only moderately.
6
The SURROUND switch, too, can be used for A/B comparisons between original and processed signals (surround
effect).
7
Use the EFFECT control to set the intensity of the surround effect. In position Wide, the effect may sound
unnatural depending on the music signal. Adjust the surround effect so that spatial perception is improved while
instruments can still be located clearly. The setting of this control largely depends on the position of the speakers
inside the vehicle, the music material - and your taste.
+ The Surround Processor improves the spatial perception of stereo signals. It cannot produce a stereo
effect from a mono signal (e.g. mono radio stations), but does not deteriorate the signal either. Since the
Surround Processor adds signals from the left channel to the right, and vice versa, the right power amp
channel will also reproduce signals when the balance control on the car radio has been turned completely
to the left.

Use the RCA-type INPUTS to connect the cable coming from the car radio or preamp output.
9
The ATTENUATOR switch determines the input sensitivity of the ULTRAFEX CAR. When your car radio pro-
vides a line-level signal (e.g. for connection to a power amp), the sensitivity should be set to LINE LEVEL.
When you wish to connect the speaker outputs of your car radio to the inputs of the ULTRAFEX CAR, set this
switch to FROM AMPLIFIER, so as to avoid damage to the input stage of the ULTRAFEX CAR.
10
The RCA-type OUTPUTS on the ULTRAFEX CAR are connected to the inputs of your power amp.
11
Use this cable to supply the unit with power. Connect the red cable to +12 V and the black cable to mass (-).
Please note the instructions given above. The green cable can be seen as the ULTRAFEX CARs power switch.
As soon as a +12 V voltage is applied to this cable the unit is activated. So, when you connect the green cable
to the antenna control output of your car radio, the ULTRAFEX CAR will be switched on together with your radio.
Your power amp will certainly have a similar connector, so that you can connect both devices to the car radio.
