1.1 We Want You to Be a Satisfied Customer
Thank you for choosing a Minolta System.
To ensure the best performance and effective use of your system,
this manual provides information on the following topics:
G Standard operator procedures
G Basic functions
G Special applications
G Settings in key operator mode
G Troubleshooting.
Please read this manual carefully before using your system. Always keep
the manual within reach. A holder for the manual is attached to the back
of the system.
For further information and assistance in the event of difficulties,
please contact:
G your Minolta technical representative
G our Web site, http://www.minolta.com.
Please keep the serial number (located on the systems rating plate) and
the systems date of purchase handy to ensure fast, accurate assistance
in the event of difficulties.
. . . because we want you to be a satisfied customer.

1.2 Protecting the Environment. . .
Minolta supports the challenge of maintaining the environment and does
all that it can to actively participate in preventing and resolving ecological
problems. Our production is certified with ISO 9000 (quality management)
and ISO14001 (environment management).
Takeback and Reutilization
Used devices, empty toner and drum units and used toner and drum units
are taken back by a local MINOLTA partner and processed for recycling
and reutilization of materials.
What is Energy Star®?
After long periods of idleness, Energy Star
®
systems switch to Energy
Saver Mode or turn themselves off. This function can reduce the annual
energy costs for the unit by up to 60%.
Systems with a high copying speed automatically switch to 2-sided
copying mode. This reduces the costs for paper and the volume of paper
consumed.
Did you know that manufacturing a sheet of paper requires 10 times as
much energy as making a copy?
The conservation of paper thus also has a direct global effect on the
conservation of energy.
This system complies with the Energy Star
®
energy efficiency criteria.
Use of Recycled Paper
This system is designed to use recycled paper that conforms to CEN/CLC
12281 or DIN 19309. Your local MINOLTA representative will be pleased
to provide more information.

1.3 The Manual Printed and Digital
Todays advanced copier systems offer a wide variety of very different
functions. A copier system can be set up for very specific requirements
and adapted for personal copying needs. Generally, it is experienced
users or system administrators who set up the copier system for individual
needs. One single manual that included all possible information, much of
it only relevant for the experienced user or system administrator, would be
much too large and complex for everyday use. This is why we supply two
manuals. You can decide for yourself which manual meets your needs.
Manual (Printed Version)
The printed version of the manual contains all the information that you
need for everyday operation of the copier system. You should keep this
manual near the copier system so you can consult it any time.
It contains a lot of useful information, such as:
G Loading originals correctly and using the document feeder.
G Setting a Copy Mode.
G Making copies lighter and darker.
Extended Manual (Digital Version on CD-R)
The extended version of the manual is supplied as a pdf file and is
specifically recommended for experienced users and system
administrators.
This version contains as well as all the information in the printed
version additional information, such as:
G Changing Basic Settings.
G Using auxiliary functions.
G Setting up Copy Track and Administrator Numbers.
G Storing and calling individual paper sizes and Zoom Ratios.
Is Acrobat Reader already installed?
You will need Acrobat Reader to view the extended manual. A version
of Acrobat Reader is included on the CD-R that you can install on your
computer if necessary.

A Brief Explanation of Important Concepts and Symbols
Paper feeding direction, length and width, lengthwise and crosswise are
standard terms. They are defined below.
Original and copy
The original is the document being duplicated by the copy cycle.
Feeding direction
The feeding direction is the papers path through the system.
Width and length
Whenever paper dimensions are specified in the Owners Manual, the first
value always refers to the width of the paper (side A) and the second to
the length (side B).

Introduction

Lengthwise and crosswise
If side A of the paper format is shorter than side B, this is referred to as
lengthwise. The size label is specified with an R e.g. A4R.
If side A of the paper format is longer than side B, this is referred to as
crosswise. The size is not identified in any more detail, e.g. A4.
Size data with or without "R"?
Lengthwise sizes are specified with an "R". If it is clear which direction
the size has to be inserted (e.g. A3 can only be fed lengthwise),
the "R" is omitted.

1.5 Overview of System Features
This system can be used in various ways:
G as a copier,
G as network printer using a printer control device (optional),
G as a printer server on a network operating system.
The device is designed for an average volume of 50,000 to 7,000 (Di551)
or 100,000 (Di650) printouts per month.
The digital technology and the memory capacities of this system give it a
range of features that goes far beyond common copier functions.
The following pages provide an overview of the range of features offered
by this system.
General Features
Auto Layout
Automatic centring of a copy on the paper.
Booklet
Combine A4 originals (1>-2 or 2>-2) into A5 or A4 booklets.
Chapter
Automatically copy previously specified chapter titles on right-hand
pages. This feature is only available in duplex mode (1>-2).
Combination
Copy 2, 4 or 8 originals onto a single paper sheet.
Contrast Range
Configure up to nine contrast ranges for four copy modes
(automatic, increase contrast, photo and text).
Dual Page
Copy two pages from an open book onto two single A4 pages (1>-1) or
onto one A4 page (1>-2). You can also combine this feature with the cover
feature.
Duplex
Make 2-sided copies from 1 or 2-sided originals.
E-mail feature for sending system messages
Send e-mail messages to a system administrator, e.g. in the event of
faults or running out of supplies.
Energy saving
Save energy with energy saving function and automatic shut off.
1
Introduction

Non-Image Area Erase
Copy with the original cover open without getting the familiar black edges.
Introduction
1
Di551/Di650 1-11
Non STD Size Original
Specify non-standard sizes for originals. This allows automatic selection
of an appropriate paper.
OHP Interleave
Insert blank or printed interleaves when copying onto transparencies.
Overlay
Copy two originals to one copy. For example, a letterhead and a text can
be copied together onto a page in one process.

Functions as with overlay mode. However, the overlay image is
permanently saved on the hard disk and can be recalled as required.
Overlay Memory
Store templates to use with the image overlay feature.
Paper Capacity
Total of 2,600 sheets (2×500 sheet drawer, 1×1,500 sheet drawer and
100 sheet bypass tray). A large capacity cassette with up to 4,000 sheets
(80g/m²) is also optionally available.
Program Job
Scan originals using various system configurations and then make the
copies in a single process.
Proof Copy
Test the system settings using a proof copy before starting large copy
jobs.
Repeat
Make multiple copies of a document onto one copy.
Reserve Jobs
Prepare further copier jobs while the system is still busy processing the
output of a job.
Reverse Image
Make copies using inverse colour values (black becomes white,
white becomes black).
Rotation Sort/Rotation Group
Output grouped or sorted copy sets, alternating lengthwise and crosswise.
Server Functions (optional)
Store and call up copy jobs from a hard drive (optional).
Sheet/Cover Insertion
Insert up to 30 separator sheets and/or cover and back sheets from one
of the paper drawers or from the bypass tray. The inserts, cover and back
sheets can be printed or left blank as desired.
