INTRODUCTION 1
The Bemis Industrial Products Division welcomes
you as a user of our Bemis TENSION-MASTER
II™
Taping Head. This manual explains how to install,
operate and maintain your Taping Head. All em-
ployees must read and understand all instructions in
this manual before they operate or maintain the
Taping Head(s). DO NOT OPERATE THE TAPING
HEAD WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING AND
SUPERVISION!
Although we make every effort to provide accurate
information about our equipment, some equipment
may be slightly different due to the owner’s special
requirements or recent engineering design changes.

included in this manual.
OPERATION
The TENSION-MASTER II™ Taping Head auto-
matically applies pressure-sensitive tape to boxes
as they are conveyed through the BEMISTAPER
®
(or other brand) case sealing machine. It can be
used as a top, bottom, or side sealing unit deter-
mined by how its setup. Operating procedures are
in Section 3.
Filled and closed boxes are conveyed past the
Taping Head(s). As this happens the Taping Head’s
infeed pressure roll applies and presses tape to the
front panel, then to the major flaps for the entire
length of the box. Additionally a brush presses the
tape to flat and irregular surfaces on the major flaps.
A spring loaded knife cuts the tape to the proper
length. Then the discharge pressure roller presses
the tape to the rear panel. The Taping Heads’
pressure rollers return to home position, ready for
the next case. The sealed case exits the machine.
FEATURES
The TENSION-MASTER II™ Taping Head is de-
signed for durability, quality tape application and
ease of operation. No special adjustments are re-
quired. Other special features include the following:
• Heavy-duty metal construction.
• Quick-threading slot in the front side plate.
• Sealed bearings at pressure roller and knife
arm pivots.
• One-way rotation tension roller.
• Quiet, heavy-duty rubber stops for knife and
roller arms.
• Long-wearing polyurethane pressure rollers.
• Roller arms can be locked out of the way for
easy knife blade changes.
• Automatically tapes various length boxes.
• Easy access to all functional areas.
RECEIVING AND HANDLING
When your Taping Head arrives, check the packing
list to make sure that you have received all parts and
equipment. Carefully inspect the box for damage. If
anything is damaged, notify the shipping company
immediately. If you will not be installing the Taping
Head right away, store it in a safe, dry place.
WARRANTY
The Taping Head comes with either the TENSION-
MASTER
II™ Renewable Lifetime Warranty or the
BEMISTAPER
®
Brand Equipment Warranty. The
Renewable Lifetime Warranty applies only if you
use BemisTape
®
. If you use another brand of tape,
the standard three-year warranty applies
(BEMISTAPER
®
Brand Equipment Warranty).
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
Section 4 includes instructions for maintaining and
repairing your Taping Head. Section 5 has step-by-
step troubleshooting procedures for correcting the
causes of common operating problems. If you can-
not find a repair procedure or if you need additional
help, contact your local Bemis distributor or the
Bemis Technical Service Department at 1-800-328-

Conveyor speeds up to 90 fpm [27 mpm], consult Bemis for higher speed applications.
Operating Conditions:
Best performance is obtained in clean, dry environments with no or low air current. Air temperature should be
32 to 120 degrees F. [0 to 49 deg. C]. Boxes should be clean, dry, presented squarely and not overfilled.
Underfilled boxes should have flaps or inner packing that can support taping head wipe down pressure to insure
proper tape application.

Electrical And Compressed Air Power
WARNING: To prevent accidental start-up
and personal injury, always turn off power to
the machine first. Then disconnect the
machine’s electrical and compressed air lines
from main supply. If the machine is not turned
off first, it may start when the power is recon-
nected.
Isolate all types of power used on the machine:
electrical, compressed air, hydraulic, mechanical,
etc.
Under all circumstances follow the minimum pro-
cedures prescribed by OSHA standards 1910.47
lockout and tagout.
OWNER’S SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY
Owners and operators of the Bemis TENSION-
MASTER
II™ Taping Head(s) are responsible for
maintaining an effective safety program. This pro-
gram should be consistent with good management
practices and meet the requirements of applicable
laws, regulations, and ordinances. Employees must
be aware of and trained to recognize the specific
requirements, precautions and hazards of the tap-
ing head.
SAFETY AWARENESS
A careful machine operator is the key to safe job
performance. Reasonable care and good judgment
in machine operation contribute to operator safety
and the safety of others. Failure to follow simple
safety rules and precautions may result in an acci-
dent. Always be aware of what is going on in the
work area. Recognize hazardous situations be-
fore they become accidents.

call your attention to special information, operating

Pinch Points
The infeed pressure roller, discharge pressure roller,
the linkage that connects them, and the knife arm
are four critical pinch points. (See Figure 2.2)
WARNING: To prevent personal injury, al-
ways turn off machine first. Then disconnect

lines from main supplies before making ad-
justments and repairs or performing
maintenance. NEVER place hands or fingers
in or around pinch points when the Taping
Head is operating.

Be very careful when handling the knife blade. It is
very sharp. Figure 2.1 shows the knife location.

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following general safety precautions are sug-
gested guidelines for safe operation and
maintenance. They do not replace or supersede the
provisions of any safety program or safety proce-
dures established by the owner. They may not cover
specific operating conditions and variations in op-
eration of the Taping Head. Specific safety
precautions appear throughout this manual and on
the equipment where appropriate.
Personal Safety
1.Thoroughly read each hazard communication
statement and instruction in this manual and on
signs attached to the equipment.
2.Do not operate or work around equipment while
under the influence of alcohol, medicines, tran-
quilizers or other drugs. They can make you less
alert or affect your judgment.
3.Take the precautions necessary to keep hair,
ties, scarves, sleeves, trouser legs and other
clothing from catching on moving parts or
controls.
4.Remove rings, watches and bracelets before
handling, lifting, or working on any equipment or
components.
Work Area Safety
1.Do not allow unauthorized personnel in or around
the equipment and work area.
2.Keep equipment surfaces clean, dry, and free of
oil or grease.
3.Keep controls, push buttons, levers, and switches
dry and free of oil or grease. Avoid operating
them with wet or oily hands.

Equipment Safety
1.Do not alter, deface, or remove factory installed
information signs attached to the equipment. If
an information sign is damaged, replace it as
soon as possible.
2.Never climb or work on equipment while it is
operating or allow anyone else to do so.
3.Inspect all equipment components before each
operation shift for damaged parts or parts sus-
pected of damage. Repair or replace any
damaged or defective components, before start-
ing or operating the equipment.
4.Before starting or operating equipment, perform
a walk around inspection of the work area and
the equipment. Make sure that no workers,
tools, parts, or other foreign objects are in, on,
under, or around the equipment.
5.Do not operate equipment if guards are not in
place. Check guards and other safety devices
for proper installation and safe working
condition.
6.Before starting equipment, make sure that all
persons near the machine and visitors know
that the equipment is going to be started.
7.When starting equipment, follow the manu-
facturer’s recommended starting sequence.
8.Do not allow anyone to start or operate any
equipment unless they have been trained on
safe operating procedures.
9.Never leave equipment controls unattended.
Either have a qualified operator relieve you or
turn equipment off if you must leave your work
station.
10.When starting up equipment and while equip-
ment is operating, be alert for improper readings,
visual defects, odors, or unusual sounds. These
can be an indication of equipment problems or
a warning of a possible hazard. Shut down the
equipment immediately, following proper shut-
down procedures, if any unsafe condition should
arise.
11.Do not work on equipment while it is operating.
Inspect, maintain, or adjust equipment before
starting it up or after shutting it down. If you must
perform these tasks while equipment is operat-
ing use extreme caution.
12.Perform all equipment inspection, maintenance,
lubrication and adjustment procedures with cau-
tion and by the manufacturer’s recommended
procedures.
Electrical Safety
1.Allow only qualified electricians or electronic
technicians to work on electrical components or
controls.
2.Always assume that an electrical circuit is “live”
until proven not to be by proper testing.
3.Repair or replace frayed, cut, broken, or dam-
aged electrical wires, cables and connectors.
4.Check that electrical ground wires, motor plugs
and power cable connections are properly
and securely connected before starting any
equipment.
5.Know all locations of main electrical shut off
boxes.

GENERAL
All preliminary settings and adjustments for the
TENSION-MASTER
II™ Taping Head are made at
the factory before shipment. These settings and
adjustments include the following:
• The Taping Head is set up for top, bottom, or
side sealing installation. The Taping Heads are
identical except for the pressure roll “spring
post” position. As a top sealing Taping Head, the
spring post must be in Position 1. For bottom or
side sealing, the post must be in Position 2.
Placing the post in these positions enables
uniform wipe down pressure compensating for
Taping Head position. This allows the same
extension spring to be used for all applications.
(See Figure 3.1)
• The tension roll is adjusted for proper tape
tension. Further adjustment is usually not nec-
essary. If you need to adjust tape tension, refer
to Section 4, “Tape Tension Adjustment”.
• The tape hub is adjusted for slight drag to
prevent tape roll over spin. If you need to adjust
tape hub drag, refer to Section 4, “Tape Hub
Drag Adjustment”.
• Both the pressure roll and the knife arm are set
at spring adjuster setting 1. For increased force,
refer to Section 4, “Spring Adjuster Setting”.

INSTALLATION
Upper Taping Head Installation
For top-sealing applications, some carton sealers
require either one plate spacer or four cylinder
spacers for proper Taping Head alignment. Spac-
ers are shipped with the Taping Head when required.
(See Figure 3.2)
For best performance, operate the Taping Head in
a relatively clean and dry environment. The tem-
perature range should be between 32˚ and 120˚ F.
Machine speed should not exceed 90 fpm (feet per
minute).
Boxes should be in good condition and have good
score lines. They should also be clean and dry.
Feed boxes to the Taping Head squarely, with all
flaps closed. Boxes should not be over or under
stuffed.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
If you only disconnect the electrical and compressed
air power to stop the machine, you are creating an
unsafe situation which can endanger you and your
coworkers. If the machine switch is ON, the ma-
chine may start immediately when you reconnect
the power.
Follow procedures as prescribed by OSHA stan-
dard 1910.47 lockout and tagout.

1.Make sure machine switch is turned off. Then
disconnect machine from main electrical power
supply.
2.Disconnect compressed air line from main air
supply.
3.If required, slide either the plate spacer or the
four cylinder spacers onto the four mounting
bolts protruding though the rear side plate.
4.Guide the four mounting bolts through holes in
the upper Taping Head mount on the carton
sealing equipment.
5.Place one lock washer on each mounting bolt,
and screw a hex nut onto each of the four
mounting bolts.
6.Tighten the nuts securely. Make sure bottom of
the Taping Head is parallel to the machine
deck across machine direction and in machine
direction.
7.Thread tape through Taping Head. Refer to
Figure 3.4.
Lower Taping Head Installation
NOTE: You must first thread tape through the Tap-
ing Head before you install it. Refer to Figure 3.4
and the following threading instructions.
1.Make sure machine switch is turned off. Then
disconnect machine from main electrical power
supply.
2.Disconnect compressed air line from main air
supply.
3.From bottom side of Taping Head, grasp infeed
pressure roll in one hand and discharge pres-
sure roll in the other hand. Refer to Figure 3.3.
4.Carefully lift and install Taping Head (tape hub
arm down) into lower Taping Head mounting
cavity in machine.
5.Restore compressed air and electrical power to
the machine.

THREADING THE TAPING HEAD
Figure 3.4 shows the path for the tape when you
thread the Taping Head. A threading diagram is also
on the inside of the rear side plate to help guide you
with tape threading. Arrows have also been stamped
into the front and rear side plates and the front
infeed arm of the Taping Head to help with proper
threading.
1.Make sure machine switch is turned OFF. Then
disconnect machine from main electrical power
supply.
2.Disconnect compressed air line from main air
supply.
3.Mount tape roll onto tape roll hub.
NOTE: Make sure tape roll is mounted correctly.
When tape is threaded through Taping Head, the
adhesive side should touch only the three knurled
rolls.
4.Double tape over, adhesive touching adhesive,
to form a tail approximately 12 in. long. This tail
makes threading easier because the tape will
not stick to Taping Head components as you
thread the tape.

1.Switch carton sealing equipment power button
to ON position
2.Insert box squarely into infeed end of machine.
The following steps occur automatically. No opera-
tor assistance is required.
• When the box reaches the Taping Head(s), it
contacts the infeed pressure roll. The tape will
automatically be applied as the box moves
through the machine.
• Approximately 2-5/8 in. of tape is applied on the
front side of the box as it contacts and passes
the infeed pressure roll.
• Tape is then applied to the full length of the box
while the infeed pressure roll applies pressure
to seal the tape to the box.
• Tape applied to the length of the box is addition-
ally wiped down by a brush (where applicable).
The brush helps to wipe tape to surfaces that are
not flat.
• When the infeed pressure roll rides off the
backside of the box, the discharge pressure roll
starts to contact the box.
• The knife arm rides off the backside of the box
and cuts the tape.
• As the box passes the discharge pressure roll,
it wipes approximately 2-5/8 in. of tape down the
backside of the box.
• The Taping Head is now ready for the next box.
5.Thread tape over tracking roll and around back-
side of tension roll. Adhesive side of tape will be
in contact with tension roll.
6.Bring tape around front side of guide roll. Then
follow threading slot. Make sure tape contacts
backside of the knurled rolls located on the
infeed pressure roll arm assembly.
7.Thread tape between tape ramp and the tape
finger. Adhesive side of tape should touch the
finger.
8.Pull tape around the front side of the infeed
pressure roll. Double check that the adhesive
side of the tape is exposed to contact the box.
9.Cut the tape so the end is approximately at the
horizontal midpoint of the infeed pressure roll.
10.Restore compressed air and electrical power to
the machine.
You are now ready to turn on and operate the
machine.
OPERATION
Boxes are sealed automatically as they pass through
the Taping Head.
WARNING: The infeed pressure roll arm,
discharge pressure roll arm, the linkage that
connects them, and the knife arm are four
pinch points on the Taping Head. NEVER
place hands or fingers in or around pinch point
areas when the machine is operating.
WARNING: The knife is very sharp. Use ex-
treme care. Never place hands or fingers near
the blade when the machine is operating.

CLEANING
WARNING: Dust and dirt blown from machine
under pressure can impair your vision. Always
wear safety goggles or other suitable eye
protection when cleaning machine.
Remove loose dust and dirt with compressed air
and OSHA-approved air nozzle. Wipe off any re-
maining dirt with a damp rag. Use an adhesive
solvent to remove glue residue on rolls and knife
blade.
Do not wash down the Taping Head. If you must
wash down the machine, remove the Taping Head
from the machine or cover it with a plastic bag.
LUBRICATION
The Taping Head has been lubricated at the factory
during assembly. Further lubrication is not needed.
All bearings are sealed and do not require lubrica-
tion. All bushings require no lubrication.
ROLL MAINTENANCE
Perform the following periodic checks and inspec-
tions to prevent excessive wear, damage, or
downtime.
Idler Rolls
Idler rolls should spin freely. If they do not, they may
have a buildup of dirt or tape fragments between the
inner surface of the roll and the roll shaft. Remove
the roll, and gently clean the roll and the shaft with
adhesive solvent on a rag.
Pressure Rolls
Inspect pressure rolls regularly for wear. If they
become worn or cut, replace them to assure the best
possible wipe down of the tape.
MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS 4
This section provides information for maintaining
and adjusting the TENSION-MASTER
II™ Taping
Head. The Taping Head is virtually maintenance
free but a routine maintenance check should be
performed periodically. Taping head components
that are worn excessively should be replaced as
soon as possible to prevent poor taping perfor-
mance, damage to the Taping Head, boxes and
their contents. Components that fail should be re-
placed immediately.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Some maintenance procedures will require disas-
sembly or adjustment of Taping Head(s) or machine.
If you stop the machine only by unplugging from an
outlet, you are creating an unsafe situation which
can endanger you and your coworkers. If the ma-
chine switch is ON, the machine may start
immediately when you reconnect electrical power.
WARNING: Machine may start unexpectedly.
To prevent personal injury, ALWAYS turn
machine off first. Then disconnect electrical
and compressed air lines from main supplies
before servicing the Taping Head.
Follow procedures as prescribed by OSHA stan-
dard 1910.47 lockout and tagout.
Some maintenance procedures will require clean-
ing Taping Head components with an adhesive
solvent. Some solvents will harm the skin upon
contact. Fumes from many solvents are harmful
when inhaled and explosive in the atmosphere as
well. Be careful when using a solvent.
WARNING: Use cleaning solvent in a well-
ventilated area. Avoid breathing fumes. Avoid
skin contact. Keep away from flame. Read
solvent safety information and instructions on
container label before using.

Inspect tension roll for excessive adhesive buildup.
To clean tension roll, use a soft cloth and adhesive
cleaning solvent. Let roll dry completely before use.
KNIFE CLEANING AND REPLACEMENT
WARNING: The knife blade is very sharp.
Use extreme care when maintaining or repair-
ing machine. Never place hands or fingers
near knife blade while machine is operating.
Cleaning the Knife
If the tape is not being cut off clean (ripping) and
straight, adhesive may have built up on the blade.
To clean the blade, use a soft cloth and adhesive
cleaning solvent. Let the blade dry completely be-
fore use. If the tape still doesn’t cut clean, the blade
is probably dull and should be replaced.
Changing Knife Blade
Change the knife blade when it becomes dull.
1.Make sure machine switch is turned off. Then
disconnect machine from main electrical power
supply.
2.Disconnect compressed air line from main air
supply.
3.Grasp the discharge pressure roll, and pivot the
discharge pressure roll arm assembly into the
Taping Head.
4. Insert a screwdriver, allen wrench, or similar tool
through the holes provided in each side plate to
hold the assembly out of the way. Make sure the
screwdriver or allen wrench will be under the
outfeed pressure roll arms to support it out of the
way. (See Figure 4.1)
5.Pivot knife guard up into Taping Head to access
knife.
6.Loosen two pan head phillips screws and two
lock washers that hold knife blade to knife mount-
ing bar.
WARNING: The knife arm assembly is a
cutting and pinch point area. Use extreme
care when replacing knife blade. Never place
hands or fingers in or around knife arm as-
sembly while machine is operating.
7.Carefully hold knife blade with your fingers; then
remove pan head screws and lock washers.
8.Install new knife blade with beveled side of teeth
away from knife mounting bar. Install pan head
screws and lock washers. Tighten securely.
9.Put a few drops of 30W oil on the knife guard
felt pad to reduce adhesive buildup on the knife
blade. The oil will be transferred to the knife
blade.
IMPORTANT: Do not oversaturate the felt pad.
Excessive oiling will cause oil to spatter on other
components of the Taping Head.
10.Restore compressed air and electrical power to
the machine.

OTHER COMPONENTS
Wipe Down Brush
Inspect wipe down brush for buildup of adhesive or
excessive wear. Replace if either condition exists.
Bumpers
Bumpers help cushion and quiet both the pressure
roll arm linkage and the knife arm when they come
to their stopped position. Although this position will
change slightly due to normal wear, the change
should not affect Taping Head operation. However,
you should replace a bumper if it is excessively worn
or cut.
1.Unscrew the two screws that hold the bumper
stop block.
2.Remove the bumper from the stop block, and
replace it.
3.Glue a new bumper in place using RTV silicone.
4.Reinstall the bumper stop block.
Springs
Springs either provide force for some components
or hold others in place. These springs include the
following:
• Extension spring for pressure arm force.
• Extension spring for knife arm force.
• Compression spring in the tension roll.
• Compression spring in the tape hub.
• Torsion spring to hold the knife guard in place.
As these springs become weak or worn, replace
them.
ADJUSTMENTS
Tape Finger Set-Up
A tape finger and a tape ramp form the tape into a
transverse “bow”. This bow stiffens the tape to hold
it against the infeed pressure roll. If bow in the tape
is not produced the tape finger may require adjust-
ment or replacement. (See Figure 4.2)
1.Make sure machine switch is turned off. Then
disconnect machine from main electrical power
supply.
2.Disconnect compressed air line from main air
supply.
3.The tape finger should protrude through the
ramp by 1/8”. If it’s straight it can be shimmed to
protrude through tape ramp. If the tape finger is
bent it should be straightened or replaced.
4.Check the finger to make sure it’s tight.
5.Restore compressed air and electrical power to
the machine.
