GENERAL INFORMATION

Read this manual before fitting or operating the machine or accessory. Whenever any

doubt exists contact your local dealer or Weidemann GmbH for assistance

Notice

The following sections must be complied with in order to secure stability and safety.

PPE (personal protective equipment)

The machine operator must also use personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize

the risk of serious injuries: Goggles (mesh visor EN1731 or safety goggles EN166),

Ear muffs (EN352), safety helmet (EN297), work gloves and identifiable work clothes.

Vehicle Ballast

It is imperative when attaching ‘third-party’ equipment to a vehicle that the

maximum possible stability of the machine and vehicle combination is achieved – this

can be accomplished by the utilization of ‘ballast’ in order to counter-balance the addi-

tional equipment added. WN Branch Cutter & WN Hedge Cutter were tested on

Hoftracs with 1800 kg, an axle base of 135 cm and a wheel gauge of 110 cm, meas-

ured from/to the outer edge of the wheel. As there are several different types of seg-

mented vehicles and a difference in the weight distribution, the given information must

be interpreted as ”guide lines”. Where possible, you should always choose wide tires in

order to increase the stability of the Hoftracs.

Front weights

May be required for rear mounted machines to place 15% of total outfit

weight on the front axle for stable transport on the road and to reduce ‘crabbing’ due to

the drag of the cutting unit when working on the ground.

Rear weights

May be required to maintain a reasonable amount of rear axle load on the

opposite wheel from the arms when in work; for normal off-ground work i.e. hedge cut-

ting this should be 20% of rear axle weight or more for adequate control. All factors

must be addressed in order to match the type and nature of the equipment added to

the circumstances under which it will be used – in the instance of Power Arm hedge

cutters it must be remembered that the machines center of gravity during work will be

constantly moving and will differ from that during transport mode, therefore balance

becomes critical.

Factors that affect stability

➢ Centre of gravity of the tractor/machine combination.

➢ Geometric conditions, e.g. position of the tool and ballast.

➢ Weight, track width and wheelbase of the vehicle.

➢ Acceleration, braking, turning and the relative position of the tool during

these operations.

➢ Ground conditions, e.g. slope, grip, load capability of the soil/surface.

➢ Rigidity of implement mounting.

➢ Pay close attention to the fact that the weight balance changes when using

Hoftracs with articulated pendulum joint, the faster this is moving.

Suggestions to increase stability

➢ Increasing rear wheel track; a vehicle with a wider wheel track is more

stable.

➢ Ballasting the wheels; it is preferable to use external weights but liquid

can be added to around 75% of the tire volume – water with anti-freeze or

the heavier Calcium Chloride alternative can be used.

➢ Addition of weights – care should be taken in selecting the location of the

weights to ensure they are added to a position that offers the greatest ad-

vantage.

➢ Front axle locking (check with tractor manufacturer).

NOTE: The advice above is offered as a guide for stability only and is not a guide to vehicle

strength. It is recommended that you consult your vehicle manufacturer or local dealer to obtain

specific advice on this subject, additionally advice should be sought from a tire specialist with

regard to tire pressures and ratings suitable for the type and nature of the machine you intend to

fit.

Recommendations

When operating this machine, please be aware of the following:

Risks

➢ Becoming trapped when hitching or unhitching.

➢ Machine overbalancing when lifting the tool (not all types).

➢ Getting caught between moving parts.

➢ Being hit or caught by any moving part, e.g. blades, shaft or arms

➢ Being hit by flying debris or machine parts due to machine damage.

➢ Machine overbalancing when not in use (not all types).

➢ Injection of high pressure oil from damaged couplings or hydraulic hoses.

➢ Accidents due to collision with other machines, or debris left on road.

Always

➢ Ensure the operator has read this handbook and has been trained to use the

machine.

➢ Ensure all cab safety guards are in place and all tractor windows closed.

➢ The use of shatterproof windows on the vehicle is recommended.

➢ Before leaving the tractor cab always ensure that the tool is firmly on the

ground, no weight is on the machine’s hydraulics and the blade has stopped

spinning.

➢ Check that all guards are properly fitted and there are no damaged or loose

parts. Particular attention should be given to the blades to ensure they are not

damaged, cracked or missing.

➢ Inspect work area for wire, steel posts, large stones and other dangerous mate-

rials and remove before starting work.

➢ Ensure that all warning labels are always visible and that they are not damaged,

defaced or missing.

➢ Wear ear defenders if operating without a quiet cab or with the cab windows

open.

➢ Ensure tractor guards are fitted correctly and are undamaged.

➢ Work at a safe speed, taking into account terrain, passing vehicles and obsta-

cles.

➢ Ensure that the tractor meets the minimum weight recommendations of the ma-

chine manufacturer and that ballast is used if necessary.

➢ Check that machine fittings and couplings are in good condition.

➢ Ensure blades are of the type recommended by the manufacturer, are securely

fitted and are undamaged.

➢ Ensure hydraulic pipes are correctly routed to avoid damage from chafing,

stretching, pinching or kinking.

➢ Disengage the machine, stop the engine and remove the key before leaving the

tractor cab for any reason.

➢ Clean up any debris left at the work site.

Never

➢ Never operate the machine with other people present, as it is possible for

debris, including stones, to be discharged from the front and rear of the flail

head.

➢ Never operate the machine until you have read and understood the relevant

Handbook and are familiar with the controls.

➢ Never use a machine that is poorly maintained or has guards that are dam-

aged or missing.

➢ Never allow an inexperienced person to operate the machine without super-

vision.

➢ Never use or fit a machine onto a tractor if it doesn’t meet the manufacturer’s

specification.

➢ Never use a machine if the hydraulic system shows signs of damage.

➢ Never attempt to detect a hydraulic leak with your hand, use a piece of card.

➢ Never allow children to play on or around the machine at any time.

➢ Never attempt any maintenance or adjustment without first disengaging the

PTO, lowering the head to the ground, stopping the tractor engine and ap-

plying the tractor parking brake.

➢ Never leave the cab without removing the ignition key.

➢ Never operate the tractor or any controls from any position other than from

the driving seat.

➢ Never stop the engine with the PTO engaged.

➢ Never operate with blades missing.

➢ Never attempt to use the machine for any purpose other than that it was de-

signed for.

➢ Never transport with the PTO engaged.

➢ Never enter the working area of the machine (risk of injury!).

Before starting work

Setting up for work

➢ Wear safety goggles and work gloves.

➢ Start the tool at low oil flow (low rpm). Let the tool warm up for a few minutes.

➢ Small trees: When cutting small trees or hedges the machine is adjusted verti-

cal.

➢ Hedges: When cutting hedges the machine is adjusted vertical or horizontal ac-

cording to the correct work position.

Tool start

➢ Wear safety goggles and work gloves.

➢ Choose low engine rpm.

➢ Make sure that the surrounding is secured.

➢ Warm start – Start the tool.

➢ Cold start – never start the tool at maximum rpm. Let the tool run without too

much strain for approx. 15 minutes to heat up the oil.

➢ Slowly increase rpm until the correct oil amount is reached.

➢ Never attempt to restart a strained/wedged in tool. Stop the tool and the Hoftrac

engine. Remove the ignition key and engage the hand break. Only then it is

safe to remove the wedged in material. Always wear safety goggles and work

gloves.

Tool stop:

➢ Reduce engine rpm to fast idling and stop the tool.

➢ Never increase or reduce the oil amount too fast. This will damage the hydraulic

system on a long-term basis.

➢ When you are finished working, stop the Hoftrac engine, remove the ignition key

and engage the hand break. Always wear safety goggles and work gloves. Refit

safeguard. Beware of sharp cutting parts!

➢ Set the tool in an angle where fitting the transport lock pin is possible.

Power lines

Contact with power lines causes severe damage

to the machine and is very dangerous to the

operator. In the unlike event that contact is

made, stop work immediately and request help.

Mounting/Dismounting/Working and Transportation

Mounting

Mounting the tool must be done at a plane and safe surface.

Always pay close attention when mounting the tool to the machine; make sure that no

persons are within range of the saw/blades, as these can cause injuries even when

stationary. For safety reasons the saw/blade must always be fitted with the safety

caps, and these should only be removed when starting the work.

Never use the tool on an unstable or non-suitable vehicle

Mounting to an arm system or similar:

Tools can be mounted to the arm system with a quick shift. The branch cutter and the

hedge cutter are systems that are developed for mounting on the Hoftracs. These have

a work width of approx. 150 cm from the center of the Hoftrac, a manual or hydraulic

telescope and a hydraulic adjusting valve. The total weight of the unit without tools is

45 kg or 65 kg, depending on the type of telescope. If necessary, ballast can be

mounted on the vehicle or the arm system to ensure stability and balance during any

work or working conditions.

1. Drive slowly forward. Adjust the angle of the arm system. Hoftrac and arm sys-

tem are connected.

Never use the machine with broken or missing

blades/knives.

Saw 140. The saw blade must be mounted so that the di-

rection of rotation is downwards.

2. When Hoftrac and the arm system are connected, the arm system is raised and

the mounting device is removed.

3. Tilt the fitting to 90°. Then connect hydraulic hoses, cables and the control unit.

Dismounting is done in reverse order.

Transport position

1. Pull out the transport safety bolt.

2. Insert the transport safety bolt in the holes for transport position. When the ma-

chine is switched off it must always be secured in transport position.

3. The arm is pulled back (and secured if it is a manually operated telescope).

4. Safe guard is attached. The machine is now ready for transportation.

Work position

1. Remove the safety guard from the cutting tools. Place the telescope in the work

position. The unit is now ready for use. Use safety goggles if Hoftrac does not

have a cab!

2. The angle of the arm system must be adjusted so the tool is working in a

horizontal position and angled forward to +5°.

Field of application

The arm system is used for cutting hedges and small trees.

The branch cutter is used for branches with a

diameter of up to 95 mm without cutting open the

branches. Branches with a diameter of more

than 40 mm can be cut normally?

Vertical cuts are allowed at an angle of no more

than 45°. Horizontal cuts are possible on hedg-

es/smaller thickets no more than 70 cm wide and

20 mm thickness. If cutting larger branches the

saw blade can get jammed or the branches can

get stuck in the machine. The recommended

maximum speed is 5 km/h.

The Hedge Cutter is used for branches of up to maximum 19 mm in diameter without

cutting open the branches.

Vertical cuts are allowed at an angle of no more than 45°. Horizontal cuts are possible

on hedges/smaller thickets no more than 60 cm wide and 10 mm thickness. If cutting

larger branches the saw blade can get jammed or the branches can get stuck in the

machine. The recommended maximum speed is 2 km/h.

Branch Cutter and Hedge Cutter. It is recommended that the forward speed is kept

at a minimum when starting the work to achieve the correct work speed for the tool.

Adjust the angle of the cutter so that it is straight and adjust the position to make the

knives cut directly at the branches. Where possible, the knives have to cut vertical in

the direction of travel. This prevents the knives from bending during work.

If smaller branches and other unwanted material get stuck, the machine and the ve-

hicle must be stopped and the ignition key removed before attempting to clean the

knives. Branch Cutter: If necessary, remove the cutting belt cover for easier access.

Replace the cover before restarting and using the machine.

Branch Cutter: Never use the machine without fitting the belt

cover.

Branch Cutter: Extreme caution must be shown when knives,

rotors and/or drive belt are cleaned; these areas have a lot of

sharp edges. Always wear work gloves and safety goggles,

and if possible, always use a tool to remove unwanted materi-

al to avoid direct finger or hand contact.

Branch Cutter: Be careful when working in height: the arm

can turn.

Branch Cutter: The machine must never be used as a sta-

tionary sawmill, for cutting battens or the like.

All tools: The unit is only to be applied for cutting hedges.

Any other use of the unit is dangerous and can lead to dam-

ages on the unit.

All tools: Never use the machine as crane or lift.

When responsible for the machine always follow the rules below:

➢ Always inspect the work area before starting work and remove potentially dan-

gerous material.

➢ Never use the machine close to persons or animals.

➢ Make sure that all cab covers are secured and that the windows remain closed

during work.

➢ Only use the machine with the correct speed of the knives.

➢ Never transport the machine without mounting the transport safeguard.

➢ Never approach the machine when it is running, always shut the engine and the

Hoftrac off.

➢ Always remove the ignition key when leaving the driver’s seat.

➢ Only use the machine for the intended purpose.

➢ Lower the machine and mount the transport safeguard when the machine is

parked and not in use.
