Caution: Follow directions provided by Appliance Manufacturer
Removal of old water heater:
1. Turn water heater control valve to off position.
Turn off gas valve if using natural gas. Remove and dispose of old gas connector.
Unplug electrical supply to heater if required.
Shut off water supply to old heater.
2. Allow water inside heater to cool down before attaching garden hose to ¾ inch drain
valve located at bottom of water heater. Drain tank to a suitable location using garden
hose. Note: Opening Temperature/Pressure release valve on side of heater will facilitate
drainage.
3. Disconnect water connectors (if present) from old heater or use pipe cutter to cut
copper pipe to and from old heater leaving at least 6 inches of copper protruding from
wall.
4. Remove sheet metal exhaust stack from heater.
Remove and properly dispose of old heater.
Installation of New Water Heater:
1. Attach ¾ inch male compression adaptors to previously cut copper pipes and wrap
male ends with 2 or 3 wraps of Teflon tape provided OR
Attach one end of supplied water connector to ¾ inch galvanized pipe water line using 2
or 3 wraps of Teflon tape provided on the pipe ends.
2. Position new heater with control valve facing forward.
Install ¾ inch male threaded pipe nipples to water heater if required again using Teflon
tape on both ends of male nipple.
3. Slowly bend flexible water connectors to approximate shape needed before
making connections to and from water heater and water supply. Tighten snugly but
do not over tighten water connectors.
For gas heaters: Attach gas connector to gas valve and to control valve on heater.
Very Important: Turn on gas at gas valve and check for leaks by brushing a solution of
dish soap and water on all gas connections. Leaks will appear as bubbles.
DO NOT LIGHT PILOT UNTIL LEAKS ARE REPAIRED
4. Once all connections are made open water valve to fill tank.
Re install sheet metal exhaust venting. This is very important due to the risk of Carbon
Monoxide poisoning. Make sure heater exhaust venting is properly installed and
unobstructed.
5. Light pilot per instructions on heater and when tank is full, turn control valve to ON
position. Set to desired temperature. After tank has reached operating temperature,
re-snug all water connections and again check for leaks. Tighten as needed.
