PREPARATION

shirts.Loosefittingclothesor jewelrycanbecaughtin movable

parts.Neveroperatethismachineinbarefeetorsandals.

• Beforestarting,checkallboltsandscrewsforpropertightnessto

besurethemachineisinsafeworkingcondition.Also,visually

inspectmachineforanydamageatfrequentintervals.

SafeHandlingof Gasoline:

Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecarein

handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthevaporsare

explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilled

onyourselfor yourclotheswhichcanignite.Washyourskinand

changeclothesimmediately.

• Useonlyan approvedgasolinecontainer.

• Neverfillcontainersinsidea vehicleor ona truckor trailerbed

witha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundaway

fromyourvehiclebeforefilling.

• Whenpractical,removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck

ortrailerand refuelitontheground.Ifthisisnotpossible,then

refuelsuchequipmenton a trailerwitha portablecontainer,rather

thanfroma gasolinedispensernozzle.

• Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltankor

containeropeningatalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donotuse

a nozzlelock-opendevice.

• Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesof

ignition.

• Neverfuelmachineindoors.

• Neverremovegascapor addfuelwhiletheengineishotor run-

ning.Allowenginetocoolatleasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

• Neveroverfillfueltank.Filltankto nomorethan1/2inchbelow

bottomoffillernecktoallowspaceforfuelexpansion.

• Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

OPERATION

• Donotputhandsorfeetnear rotatingparts.Contactwiththe

makinganyadjustments,or inspections.

• Neverrunanengineindoorsorina poorlyventilatedarea.Engine

exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessanddeadlygas.

• Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancausea burn.Donot

touch.

• Usecautionwhentillingnearfences,buildingsandunderground

utilities.Rotatingtinescancausepropertydamageor personal

injury.

• Donotoverloadmachinecapacitybyattemptingtotillsoiltoo

deepattoofastofa rate.

If thefueltankhastobe drained,do thisoutdoors.

Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforgas,oil,etc.to

EngineswhicharecertifiedtocomplywithCaliforniaandfederal

EPAemissionregulationsforSORE(SmallOff RoadEquipment)are

certifiedtooperateon regularunleadedgasoline,and mayinclude

thefollowingemissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification(EM),

OxidizingCatalyst(CO),SecondaryAirInjection(SAI)and ThreeWay

Catalyst(TWO)if soequipped.

SPARK ARRESTOR

Thismachineis equippedwithan internalcombustionengineand

shouldnotbe usedonor nearanyunimprovedforest-covered,

brushcoveredor grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaust

systemisequippedwitha sparkarrestormeetingapplicablelocalor

statelaws(ifany)

Ifa sparkarrestorisused,itshouldbe maintainedin effectiveworking

orderbytheoperator.IntheStateofCaliforniatheaboveis required

Engine parts, especially the muffler, become extremely hot during operation. Allow engine

1. Removeall staplesfromaroundthebottomoftheperimeter.

2. Removethecartonfromtheskid.

ATTACHING THE HANDLE ASSEMBLY

1. Installthehandleontothetillerusingthehardwarepre-installed

onthehandlemountingbrackets.Thisconsistsofa 5/16-18x

3.00"hexbolt,a handlecrankassembly,retainerbracketandtwo

5/16-18flangelocknuts.Removethishardwarefromthehandle

mountingbracketson thetiller.Referto Figure1inset.

3. Installthehandle-crankadjustmentrod intothetopholeofthe

mountingbracketfromtheleft handsideofthehandleassembly,

securewiththeotherflangelocknutpreviouslyremoved.Fit

thehexend oftheretainerbracketovertheflangelocknut.See

4. Tightenthehexboltinstalledin Step2 atthis time.Becarefulnot

toovertightenthishardware.

5. Withthehandlein thedesiredposition,tightenthehandlecrank

adjustmentrodatthistime.

1. Routethetwocablesalongthehandleassemblyontherighthand

side.

2. Connectthereversecable(Red)tothe reversecablecontrolby

feedingthez-hookthroughtheholeon thereversecablecontrol

4. Snapthecablehousingclips intothehandleassemblycable

mount.Theredclip(reversecable)fitsintothetoppositiononthe

handleassembly,whiletheblackclip(forward/clutchcable)feeds

intothelowerpositiononthehandleassembly.See Figure3.

MOVING THE TILLER OFF THE SKID

Torollthetilleroff theshippingplatform,putthewheelsinfreewheel,if

theyarenotalreadyfromthefactory,asfollows:

1. Placea sturdyblockunderthetransmissiontoraiseonewheel

about1"off theground.Removetheclickpin fromthewheelhub

andwheelshaft.SeeFigure5.

inward on the wheel shaft.

Checking and Adding Oil

Theengineisshippedwithoutoil intheengine.Youmustfillthe

enginewithoil beforeoperating.Runningtheenginewithinsufficient

_o cancauseserous engnedamageandvod theproductwarranty.

Initial Use

1. Removetheoil filldipstick.

2. Placethetilleron levelground,usea funneltoemptyentire

contentsoftheoil bottleprovidedwiththeunitintotheengine.

3. Replacetheoil filldipstickandtighten.

Checkingand adding oil

1. Placethetillerona flat,levelsurface.

2. Removetheoil fillercap/dipstickandwipethedipstickclean.See

Figure6.

3. Insertthecap/dipstickintotheoilfillerneck,butdo notscrewitin.

4. Removetheoil fillercap/dipstick.Ifthelevelislow,slowlyaddoil

untiloil levelregistersbetweenhigh(H)and low(L),Figure6.

NOTE:Donotoverfill.Overfillingwithoil maycausesmoking,hard

starting,or sparkplugfouling.

5. Replaceandtightencap/dipstickfirmlybeforestartingengine.

NOTE:DONOTallowoil leveltofallbelowthe"L"markon the

dipstick.Doingsomayresultinequipmentmalfunctionsordamage.

NOTE:Tochangetheoilon yourengine,seethe Maintenance

Sectionofthismanual.

Fuel Recommendations

Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedor lowleadedtominimizecombus-

tionchamberdeposits)witha minimumof87 octane.Gasolinewith

up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButylEther)canbe

used.Neverusean oil/gasolinemixtureordirty gasoline.Avoidgetting

dirt, dust,or waterinthefueltank.DONOTuseE85gasoline.

• Refuelina well-ventilatedareawiththeenginestopped.Donot

smokeorallowflamesor sparksin theareawheretheengineis

refueledor wheregasolineisstored.

• Donotoverfillthefueltank.After refueling,makesurethetank

capisclosedproperlyandsecurely.

• Becarefulnotto spillfuelwhenrefueling.Spilledfuelorfuelvapor

mayignite.Ifanyfuelisspilled,makesuretheareaisdrybefore

startingtheengine.

• Avoidrepeatedor prolongedcontactwithskinorbreathingofvapor.

Adding Fuel

Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely

flammableandthevaporsareexplosive.Neverfuelthemachine

indoorsorwhiletheengineishotor running.Extinguishcigarettes,

cigars,pipesandothersourcesof ignition.

1. Besureengineisoutdoorsandina well-ventilatedarea.

2. Cleanareaaroundthefuelfillcapandremovethefuelfillcap.

3. UsinganapprovedredGASOLINEcontainer,addfuelslowly,being

carefultoavoidspilling.

4. Fillthetankuntilthefuelreachesthe"fuelfull"indicatormark.See

Figure7.

3. Releasethebailtostoptherotationofthewheelsandtines.

To move tiller in reverse: (Do not till in reverse)

a. ReleasetheForwardClutchBail.

b. Liftthe handlebaruntilthetinesare offtheground.

c. Slowlypull backonthe ReverseLever,andcarefullywalk

backwardswiththe machine.

NOTE:Inreversemode,thetineswillrotateforward.

d. If longerdistancesneedtobe coveredinreverse,shutoff the

engine,thenplacethetwowheelsinFREEWHEEL.

TURNING THE TILLER

1. Practiceturningthetillerin a level,openarea.Beverycarefulto

keepyourfeetandlegsawayfromthetines.

2. Tobegina turn,liftthehandlebarsuntilthetinesareoutofthe

groundandtheengineandtinesarebalancedoverthewheels.

3. Withthetillerbalanced,pushsidewayson thehandlebartosteer

inthedirectionoftheturn.Afterturning,slowlylowerthetinesinto

thesoiltoresumetilling.

SETTING THE DEPTH

Becertainsparkplugwireisdisconnectedandgroundedagainstthe

enginewhenperforminganyadjustments.

Tillingdepthiscontrolledbythedepthstakewhichcanbeadjustedtofive

differentsettings.Adjustthesideshieldsasyouadjustthedepthstake.

• Whenusingthetillerforthefirsttime,usethesecondadjustment

holefromthetop(1"oftillingdepth).

• Whenbreakingup sodandforshallowcultivation,usethesetting

whichgives1"oftillingdepth(secondholefromthetop). Place

thesideshieldsintheirlowestposition.

• Forfurtherdepth,raisethedepthstakeandsideshieldsandalso

makeoneor twomorepassesoverthearea.

• Whentillingloosesoil,thedepthstakemayberaisedtoits

highestposition(usebottomadjustmenthole)to givethedeepest

tillingdepth.Raisethesideshieldstotheirhighestposition.

• Totransporttiller,lowerthedepthstake(usetopadjustmenthole).

Toadjustthedepthstake,pull backon thedepthadjustmentbracket

(A)and pushupor down(B) untilthebracketreachesthedesired

position,thenreleasethebracket(C). SeeFigure12.

Toadjustthesideshields,removethewingnuts.Movethesideshieldtothe

desiredpositionandreplacethewingnuts.Tightensecurely.SeeFigure13.

Thehandleshouldbeadjustedsothat whenthetillerisdigging3-4"

intothesoil,thehandlefallstoaboutwaste-high.Toadjusthandle,

simplyloosenthehandleadjustmentcrank,movethehandletothe

desiredheightand retightentheadjustmentcrank.See Figure14.

CLEARING THE TINES

Beforeclearingthetinesbyhand,stoptheengine,allowall moving

partstostopanddisconnectthesparkplugwire.Failuretofollowthis

warningcouldresultinpersonalinjury.

* Thetines havea self-clearingactionwhicheliminatesmostofthe

tanglingofdebris.However,occasionallydrygrass,stringystalks

ortoughvinesmaybecometangled.Followtheseproceduresto

helpavoidtanglingandtoclearthetines,ifnecessary.

* Toreducetangling,setthedepthregulatordeepenoughtoget

maximum"chopping"actionasthetineschopthematerialagainst

theground.Also,trytotill undercropresiduesor covercrops

whiletheyaregreen,moistandtender.

* Whiletilling,try swayingthehandlebarsfromsideto side(about

6"to 12").This"fishtailing"actionoftenclearsthetinesof debris.

TILLING TiPS & TECHNIQUES

Beforetilling,contactyourtelephoneor utilitiescompanyandinquire

l ifundergroundequipmentor linesareusedon yourproperty.Donot

[till nearburiedelectriccables,telephonelines,pipesor hoses.

Tilling Depth

* Thisisa CRT(counter-rotatingtine)tiller.Asthewheelspull

forward,thetinesrotatebackward.Thiscreatesan "uppercut"

tineactionwhichdigsdeeply,uprootingsoilandweeds.Don't

overloadtheengine,butdigasdeeplyas possibleoneachpass

On laterpasses,thewheelsmaytendtospininthesoftdirt. Help

themalongbyliftingupslightlyonthe handlebar(onehand,palm

up,worksmosteasily).

* Avoidthetemptationto pushdownonthehandlebarsinan

attempttoforcethetillertodigdeeper.Doingsotakestheweight

off thepoweredwheels,causingthemtolosetraction.Withoutthe

wheelstoholdthetillerback,thetineswillattempttopropelthe

tillerbackward,towardstheoperator.

Whencultivating(breakingupthe surfacesoilaroundthe plants

todestroyweeds,See Figure15),adjustthetinestodigonly1"

to2" deep.Usingtheshallowtillingdepthhelpspreventinjuryto

theplantswhoserootsoftengrowclosetothesurface.Ifneeded,

liftupon thehandlebarsslightlytopreventthetinesfromdigging

toodeeply.(Cultivatingon a regularbasisnotonlyeliminates

weeds,italsoloosensandaeratesthesoilforbettermoisture

absorptionandfasterplantgrowth.)Wateringthegardenareaa

fewdayspriortotillingwillmaketillingeasier,aswill lettingthe

newlyworkedsoilsetfora dayor twobeforemakingafinal,deep

tillingpass.

Choosing the Correct Wheel & Tine Speeds

Withexperience,youwillfindthetillingdepthandtillingspeed

combinationthatis bestforyourgarden.Settheenginethrottleleverat

a speedtogivetheengineadequatepowerandyet allowittooperate

attheslowestpossiblespeeduntilyouhaveachievedthemaximum

tillingdepthyoudesire.Fasterenginespeedsmaybe desirable

whenmakingfinalpassesthroughtheseedbedor whencultivating.

Selectionofthecorrectenginespeed,inrelationtothetillingdepth,

willensurea sufficientpowerleveltodo thejobwithoutcausingthe

engineto labor.

Tilling Up and Down a Slope

1. Tokeepsoilerosiontoa minimum,besuretoaddenoughorganic

mattertothesoilsothat ithasgoodmoisture-holdingtextureand

try toavoidleavingfootprintsorwheelmarks.

2. Whentillingvertically,try tomakethefirstpassuphillasthetiller

digsmoredeeplygoinguphillthanit doesdownhill.Insoftsoilor

weeds,youmayhavetoliftthehandlebarsslightlywhilegoingup-

hill.Whengoingdownhill,overlapthefirstpassbyaboutone-half

thewidthofthetiller.

Terrace Gardening

1. Tocreatea terrace,startatthetopoftheslopeandworkdown

Gobackandforthacrossthefirstrow.See Figure19.

• Positiontheloadingvehiclesothattherampangleisasflat

as possible(thelessinclinetotheramp,thebetter).Turnthe

vehicle'sengineoffandapplytheparkingbrake.

• Whengoinguptheramps,standin thenormaloperatingposition

and pushthetilleraheadofyou.Havea personateachsideto

turnthewheels.

• Whengoingdowntheramps,walkbackwardwiththetiller

followingyou.Keepalertforanyobstaclesbehindyou.Positiona

personateachwheeltocontrolthespeedofthetiller.Nevergo

downthe rampstiller-first,asthetillercouldtipforward.

• Placewoodenblockson thedownhillsideofthewheelsifyou

needtostopthetillerfromrollingdowntheramp.Also,usethe

blockstotemporarilykeepthetillerin placeon theramps(if

necessary),andtochockthewheelsin placeafterthetillerisin

thevehicle.

• Afterloadingthetiller,preventitfromrollingbyengagingthe

wheelsintheWHEELDRIVEposition.Chockthewheelswith

blocksandsecurelytiethetillerdown.

engineandmufflercool.

• Putthewheelsin freewheelbyputtingtheclickpinsthroughthe

wheelshaftonly(notthroughthewheelhub).

• Thetilleristooheavyandbulkytobe safelyliftedbyoneperson.

Twoor morepeopleshouldsharetheload.

• Usesturdyrampsandmanually-- withtheengineshutoff -- roll

thetillerintoand outofthevehicle.Twoor morepeopleare

neededtodothis.

• Therampsmustbestrongenoughto supportthecombined

weightofthetillerandanyhandlers.Therampsshouldprovide

goodtractiontopreventslipping;theyshouldalsohavesiderails

toguidethetilleralongtheramps;andtheyshouldhavea locking

devicetosecurethemtothevehicle.

• Thehandlersshouldwearsturdyfootwearthatwillhelpto prevent

slipping.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

Checking the Spark Plug

Toensureproperengineoperation,thesparkplugmustbeproperly

gappedandfreeofdeposits.Checkthesparkplugevery25hoursand

replaceitevery100hours.

Removethesparkplugbootandusea sparkplugwrenchto

ToChecktheTransmissionGearOil Level:

1. Checkthegearoil levelwhenthetransmissionis cool.Gearoil

willexpandinwarmoperatingtemperaturesandthis expansion

willprovidean incorrectoil levelreading.

2. Withthetilleron levelground,pulltheDepthRegulatorLeverall

thewayup

3. Removetheoil fillplugfromthetransmissionhousingand look

insidetheoilfillholetolocatethemaindriveshaftsituatedbelow

thehole.SeeFigure25.

4. Thegearoil leveliscorrectifthegearoilisapproximatelyhalfway

upthesideofthemaindriveshaft.

5. If thegearoil levelislow,add gearoil asdescribednext.Ifthe

gearoillevelisokay,securelyreplacetheoil fillplug.

6. If addingonlya fewouncesofgearoil,useAPIratedGb4 or

Gb5 gearoil havinga viscosityofSAE 140,SAE85%140 or SAE

80W-90.ifrefillinganemptytransmission,useonlyGb4 gearoil

havinga viscosityofSAE85W-140or SAE140.

7. Whilecheckingfrequentlytoavoidoverfilling,slowlyaddgearoilinto

theoilfillholeuntilitreachesthehalfwaypointonthedriveshaft.

8. Securelyreplacetheoil fillplug.

Change Transmission Gear Oil

Thetransmissiongearoildoesnotneedtobe changedunlessithas

beencontaminatedwithdirt, sandor metalparticles.Seeanautho-

rizedSearsServiceCentertohavethetransmissiongearoil changed

orto scheduleservice,simplycontactSearsat1-800-4-MY-HOME®.

LUBRICATION

Afterevery10operatinghours,oilor greasethelubricationpoints.Use

cleanlubricatingoil (#30weightmotoroilis suitable)andcleangeneral

purposegrease(greasecontainingametallubricantispreferred,if

available).SeeFigure26.

• Removethewheels,cleanthewheelshaftandapplya thin

coatingofgrease.

• Greasetheback,frontandsidesofthedepthregulatorlever.

• Removethetinesandcleanthefineshaft.Usea fileor sandpa-

perto gentlyremoveanyrust,burrsor roughspots(especially

aroundtheholesin theshaft).Applygreasetotheendsofthe

shaftbeforeinstallingthetines.

• Oilthethreadson thehandlebarheightadjustmentscrewsand

thehandlebarattachingscrews.

TIRE PRESSURE

Checktheairpressureinbothtires.Theair pressureshouldbe

between15-20PSI.Keepbothtiresequallyinflatedto helpprevent

machinefrompullingtooneside.

HARDWARE

Checkforlooseor missinghardwareafterevery10operatinghours

andtightenor replace= asneeded= beforereusingthetiller.Be

suretocheckthescrewsunderneaththetillerhoodthat securethe

transmissioncoverandthe DepthRegulatorLevertothetransmission.
