Note for UK users
When replacing the fuse in the supplied moulded mains plug, always refit the integral fuse holder/cover.
Always fit a 3 amp fuse either in the plug or adapter, or at the distribution board.
If the supplied mains plug is not suitable for your mains socket, remove its fuse and cut the plug off the lead.

Surround sound
This section explains surround sound theory and practice.
Surround sound creates the impression of being in the same location as the movie, by
literally surrounding you with sound. There are four formats for producing surround
sound, both analog and digital. They are Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital
(AC-3), and DTS.

The theory
What is surround sound?
In the same way stereo produces a wider, more involving sound than mono by using two separate tracks rather than one, so surround
uses one or more extra ‘surround’ channels to provide more depth. To do this, the surround information is sent to surround speakers
which, when placed alongside or behind you, create the illusion that the sound is behind you. It really is that extra, third dimension
to sound.
The practice
Dolby Surround
Dolby Surround is Dolby Laboratories’ original implementation of surround sound. It achieves this by using a front left channel, a front
right channel, and a mono surround channel, as shown in figure 1.
The front left and right channels provide a normal stereo image, which is why Dolby Surround can be played through stereo speaker
set-ups. They also combine to create a ‘phantom’ centre channel for dialogue. The surround channel is mono, so left and right surround
channels sound the same. For this reason they are placed alongside the listening position to give an open, spacious, cinematic quality.

Surroundinformation zu den Surround-Lautsprechern gesendet, die neben oder hinter Ihnen plaziert werden. Hierdurch wird die Illusion
erzeugt, der Sound käme von hinten. Das ist die dritte Sounddimension.
Die Praxis
Dolby Surround
Dolby Surround ist die ursprüngliche Surround-Sound Implementierung der Dolby Laboratorien. Dolby erzeugt Surround-Sound durch
die Verwendung eines vorderen linken und rechten Kanals und einem Mono-Surroundkanal, wie in Abbildung 1 gezeigt.
Die beiden vorderen linken und rechten Kanäle geben ein normales Stereo Signal wieder, weshalb Dolby Surround auch auf normalen
Stereolautsprechern wiedergegeben werden kann. Daneben werden über einen virtuellen Center-Kanal Dialoge ausgegeben.
Der Surround-Kanal ist Mono, weswegen der linke und rechte Surround-Kanal gleich klingt. Aus diesem Grund müssen die
Surroundlautsprecher neben der Hörposition angebracht sein, um einen räumlichen Klang in Kinoqualität erzeugen zu können.

De la même manière que la stéréophonie reproduit un son plus large et plus attractif que la monophonie grâce à deux canaux
distincts au lieu d’un seul, le son surround met en œuvre un ou plusieurs canaux supplémentaires pour ajouter de la profondeur.
Pour cela, les canaux surround sont envoyés sur des enceintes arrière, placées derrière vous ou de part et d’autre de votre position
d’écoute, pour créer l’illusion d’un son émanant de toutes les directions, vous plongeant ainsi dans un environnement sonore
tridimensionnel.
La mise en œuvre
Le Dolby Surround
Dolby Surround est l’implémentation du son surround par les Laboratoire Dolby. Pour cela, il met en œuvre un signal stéréophonique à
l’avant et un canal monophonique à l’arrière (figure 1).
Les canaux avant produisent une image stéréophonique, ce qui explique pourquoi un signal Dolby Surround peut être reproduit par
une installation stéréophonique classique. Ils simulent aussi un canal central « fantôme », pour les dialogues. Le canal surround est
monophonique, réparti entre les enceintes arrière et limité en fréquences. Voilà pourquoi elles sont placées de part et d’autres de la
position d’écoute, pour délivrer un son ouvert de nature cinématographique.

Dolby Pro Logic
While Dolby Pro Logic also uses a mono surround channel, it actually encodes the centre channel, keeping dialogue and other effects
firmly placed at the centre of the screen, as shown in figure 2. It also provides better channel separation than Dolby Surround, and
places sounds more accurately for a compelling surround sound experience.
You normally experience Dolby Surround and Dolby Pro Logic as an analog signal, produced from your stereo TV or Video Cassette
Recorder (VCR), but they can also be encoded digitally, for example if you have older titles that have been remastered on Digital
Versatile Disc (DVD).
Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital uses digital technology to provide full frequency range channels for front left, front right, centre, surround left and
surround right speakers.
Dolby Digital enables precise location of spatial audio effects, while an extra Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel, as shown in
figure 3, provides spectacular rumbles and explosions.
This, combined with the flexibility of digital technology, allows film makers even greater creativity, and film viewers even greater realism.
Dolby Pro Logic
Auch Dolby Pro Logic benutzt Mono Surround-Kanäle, trennt den Center-Kanal dagegen und spielt Dialoge und andere Effekte direkt
über den am Bildschirm plazierten Center-Lautsprecher ab, wie in Abbildung 2 gezeigt. Gegenüber Dolby Surround arbeitet Dolby Pro
Logic mit genauerer Kanaltrennung für bessere Klangerlebnisse.

Dolby Digital
Stellt Dolby Digital die neueste Entwicklung im Bereich Surround-Sound dar. Basierend auf digitaler Technologie ist es möglich, den
Sound getrennt auf einem linken und rechten vorderen Kanal, einem linken und rechten hinteren Kanal, einen Center-Kanal und einem
Subwoofer auszugeben - insgesamt also 6 Kanäle, bzw. 5.1.
Befindet sich die Hörposition in der Mitte , wie in Abbildung 3 gezeigt, ermöglicht Dolby Digital eine präzise Klangpositionierung von
Effekten, da der Subwoofer durch seine niederfrequenten Schwingungen (LFE =
Low Frequency Effects) spektakuläre Explosions- und
Donnereffekte erzeugen kann.
Das alles, kombiniert mit der Flexibilität der digitalen Technologie, ermöglicht Filmstudios größere Kreativität und Filmkonsumenten
mehr Realitätstreue.
Le Dolby Pro Logic
Si le son Dolby Pro Logic délivre aussi un son monophonique à l’arrière, il encode au sein du signal stéréophonique un canal central,
pour faire coïncider les dialogues et certains effets spéciaux avec le centre de l’écran (figure 2). En outre, il procure une meilleur
séparation des canaux que le Dolby Surround. Le positionnement du son est plus précis, immergeant plus fortement le spectateur .
Les son Dolby Surround et Dolby Pro Logic sont véhiculés par le signal analogique émanant de votre téléviseur ou de votre
magnétoscope. Il peut aussi être transmis numériquement, par exemple lorsqu’un film ancien a été remasterisé sur un DVD (Digital
Versatile Disc).
Le Dolby Digital
Le Dolby Digital est un aboutissement en matière de son surround. Totalement numérique, il reproduit la totalité des fréquences du
spectre sonore sur cinq enceintes : deux à l’avant (gauche et droit), une au centre et deux à l’arrière (gauche et droit).
Le Dolby Digital assure une localisation précises des effets audios tridimensionnels. Un canal supplémentaire, dédié aux sons les plus
graves (LFE pour
Low Frequency Effects) assure une restitution parfaite des explosions (figure 3), des grondements et des fusillades.
Ainsi, cette technologie numérique permet-elle aux réalisateurs de produire des films d’un grand réalisme sonore, pour le plus grand
plaisir des spectateurs.

DTS
DTS is the proprietary technology of Digital Theatre Systems, Inc. Like Dolby Digital it uses six separate channels of sound and behaves
in a very similar way, with front left and right, surround left and right, centre and Low Frequency Effects channels, as shown in figure 4.
Where DTS differs is in the way it stores the digital audio information, because it uses less compression than Dolby Digital to get the
information onto a disc. This means that it has a wider dynamic range, and as such is closer to the original cinema sound track.
With DTS, you really are getting the cinematic soundtrack as it was designed to be heard.
DTS
DTS ist eine geschützte Technologie der Firma Digital Theatre Systems, Inc. Sie benutzt, wie Dolby Digital, sechs separate Audiokanäle

The speakers
This section explains what each speaker is for, how to connect it,
and how to position it for the best surround sound.
Although speaker cable is included in the DigiTheatre DTS kit to satisfy most cabling
requirements, if you need longer cables, any low resistance multistrand speaker cable
is suitable.

Front left and right
The front left and right speakers are partly responsible for the full bandwidth of sound, and partly for the centre channel information.
Connecting
Connect the front speakers to the amplifier as shown in figure 5, using the cables that are 3 metres long. Connect the all-white cables
to the red (+) terminals, and the cables with the black stripe to the black (-) terminals.
Positioning
As shown in figure 6, place the front speakers at about 70 degrees to your listening position, as this replicates the speaker
arrangement used both for mixing surround soundtracks, and for an ideal cinema seat.

The centre speaker
The centre speaker provides the dialogue as well as a significant share of the sound effects and music.
Connecting
Connect the centre speaker to the amplifier using the multiway centre speaker cable, as shown in figure 7.
Positioning
As shown in figure 8, try to place the centre speaker at the same height as the front speakers and as close as possible to the screen,
either above it or below it. All the DigiTheatre DTS speakers are magnetically shielded so they will not affect your TV or monitor.
As shown in figure 9, the centre speaker should also be aligned with or slightly behind the front speakers, not in front of them as this
might interfere with the surround effect for off-centre viewers.

daß keine Beschädigungen am Monitor oder Fernseher entstehen sollten.
Auch sollte der Center-Lautsprecher, wie in Abbildung 9 gezeigt, auf gleicher Höhe, bzw leicht hinter den vorderen Lautsprechern
aufgebaut sein.

The surround speakers
The surround left and right speakers provide the extra dimension associated with cinema sound. You can see them all along the side
and back walls of real cinema auditoria.
Connecting
Connect the surround speakers to the amplifier as shown in figure 10 opposite, using the cables that are 8 metres long. Connect the
all-white cables to the red (+) terminals, and the cables with the black stripe to the black (-) terminals.
Positioning
The objective is to have the speakers creating an open, spacious sound, which means that they should not point towards you because
you can then detect them as sound sources.
As shown in figure 11, try to position them about 60 to 90 cm above your head. To achieve this, you can use the holes at the back of
the speakers to mount them to walls, using brackets. For more information on suitable brackets, please visit our web site at

As shown in figure 12, you can have them either on your side walls aiming straight across the back wall behind you, which is our
recommendation, or on the back wall aiming straight down the side walls.

Versuchen Sie, wie in Abbildung 11 gezeigt, die Surround-Lautsprecher 60 - 90 cm über Ihrem Kopf auszurichten. Um das zu erreichen,
können Sie die Lautsprecher mit den Löchern auf der Rückseite und speziellen Halterungen an der Wand befestigen. Weitere

La figure 11 indique comment les disposer entre 60 et 90 cm au-dessus de votre tête. Des supports de montage sont prévus à
l’arrière des enceintes.
La figure 12 montre deux dispositions possibles derrière la position d’écoute : sur les murs latéraux, les enceintes placées face à face
et rayonnant le long du mur arrière (ce que nous vous conseillons), ou sur le mur arrière, les enceintes rayonnant le long des
murs latéraux.

Le caisson de graves
Le caisson de graves reproduit les fréquences les plus graves, celles qui véhiculent un son profond qui donne toute leur densité aux
grondements et aux explosions.
Connexion
En connectant l’enceinte centrale, vous avez aussi connecté le caisson de graves contenant l’amplificateur. Avant de continuer,
assurez-vous que le caisson est hors tension, comme indiqué en figure 13 (en UK/Europe seulement).
Placement
Les sons les plus graves n’étant pas directionnels, vous pouvez quasiment placer le caisson où bon vous semble, y compris sous ou
derrière un meuble. Cependant, gardez à l’esprit que le câble reliant le caisson à l’enceinte centrale ne mesure que 3 mètres.
Cependant, vous obtiendrez les meilleures performances en le posant sur le sol, légèrement dégagé du mur ou d’une encoignure pour
que le niveau des graves ne soit pas proéminent - à moins que ce soit l’effet recherché!

The subwoofer produces a deep bass sound, which is important for providing the effects of explosions or rumbles.
Connecting
By connecting the centre speaker you have also connected the subwoofer, which contains the amplifier. Before you continue, make
sure that the subwoofer power is off, as shown in figure 13 (in UK/Europe only, does not apply in North America).
Positioning
As bass is non-directional you can place the subwoofer almost anywhere, even under or behind furniture, but bear in mind that the
cable between it and the centre speaker is 3 metres long. Generally you will find that it performs best on the floor, and not too close to
walls or corners where it might produce overwhelming bass (unless that’s the effect you want!).

source to DigiTheatre DTS.
Your surround source is what you use to play back movies, for example, your PC-based or
stand-alone DVD player, or your video cassette recorder (VCR).

Digital surround
A digital surround source provides six channels encoded in a digital format, which are decoded by DigiTheatre DTS. Your digital
surround source could be your stand-alone DVD player, digital TV, games console or PC.
Depending on the sockets available on your source, you can connect your source as shown in figure 14, to the amplifier’s coaxial
socket using the S/P-DIF cable supplied, or to its optical socket using an optical cable. If you don’t have an optical cable your dealer
should be able to supply one, or you can visit our web site at www.videologic.com for an accessory list. The amplifier's optical socket
takes a Toslink connector.
•
To use coaxial, connect one end of the S/P-DIF cable supplied to the amplifier’s coaxial socket, and the other to your source’s
S/P-DIF out socket.
•
To use optical, remove the cover from the amplifier's optical socket, and from your source’s optical out socket, and connect them
using your optical cable.
Take care not to touch the ends of the optical cable or to allow dust to enter the connectors or sockets, as this may degrade the
signal. When not in use, replace their covers.
Digital Surround
Ein Digitalsignal besteht aus 6 kodierten Signalkanälen im digitalen Format und wird mit Hilfe des Dekoders verarbeitet. Wie in
Abbildung 14 gezeigt, können Sie eine Vielfalt von digitalen Surround-Quellen anschließen.
In Abhängigkeit vom Anschluß Ihrer Quelle, können Sie das Gerät mit dem mitgelieferten S/P-DIF Koaxialkabel an den Dekoder
anschließen oder über ein optisches Kabel verbinden. Sollten Sie kein optisches Kabel besitzen, können Sie dies im Fachhandel

erreichen können. Der Dekoder benutzt als optische Verbindung den Toslink-Anschluß, der auch mittlerweile bei vielen Soundkarten
eingesetzt wird.

Wenn Sie das mitgelieferte Koaxialkabel benutzen, verbinden Sie das eine Ende des S/P-DIF Kabels mit der Koaxialbuchse des
Dekoders und das andere Ende mit der S/P-DIF Buchse der Klangquelle.
•
Um den optischen Anschluß des DigiTheatre Dekoders zu benutzen, müssen Sie die Schutzkappe des optischen Anschlusses am
Dekoder und der Soundquelle abnehmen und beide miteinander verbinden.
Bei Verwendung von optischen Kabeln muß darauf geachtet werden, daß die Enden des Kabels mit aller Vorsicht behandelt werden
und keine Verunreinigungen wie Fingerabdrücke oder Staub darauf kommt. Werden die optischen Anschlüsse nicht benutzt, stecken
Sie die Schutzkappen wieder in die optischen Anschlußbuchsen.
Source Digital
Une surround numérique est composée de six canaux numériques qui sont traitées par le DigiTheatre DTS. Ce peut être votre lecteur
de DVD, votre décodeur câble ou satellite (télévision numérique), votre console de jeu ou votre PC (figure 14).
Selon la nature des connecteurs disponibles sur votre équipement, vous utiliserez la prise coaxiale du décodeur DigiTheatre, via le
câble S/P-DIF fourni, ou la prise optique avec un câble optique. Dans ce cas, procurez-vous un câble avec des connecteurs de type

Dolby Pro Logic surround
A Pro Logic source provides four encoded channels, which are decoded by DigiTheatre DTS.
Your Dolby Pro Logic source can be analog, such as a stereo Video Cassette Recorder or TV. It can also be digital if, say, you are playing
back Dolby Pro Logic titles from your digital source.
•
To connect a digital Pro Logic source, use the amplifier's digital inputs as explained on page 16.
•
To connect an analog Pro Logic source, connect the amplifier's left and right phono sockets to your source’s left and right out
sockets using the dual RCA to dual RCA phono cable supplied, as shown in figure 15.
Dolby Pro Logic Surround
Eine Dolby Pro Logic Quelle liefert ein kodiertes Signal mit vier Kanälen, die mit dem Dekoder dekodiert wird.

Source stéréophonique

un PC).

DigiTheatre DTS has special features for reproducing surround sound in your stereo system. Your stereo source can be analog (for
example, a compact cassette player, or CD player with analog out), or digital (for example, a CD player with digital out, or a PC).

To connect a digital stereo source, you can use either the optical or coaxial input, as described for digital surround on page 16.
•
To connect an analog stereo source, connect the source’s left and right phono leads, as described for Dolby Pro Logic on page 17.
You can use either the dual RCA phono to dual RCA phono cable to do this, or the 3.5mm jack to dual RCA phono cable.
