Important Cord Information
This appliance has a polarized plug. To reduce the risk of electric
shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one
way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug.
If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt
to modify the plug in any way.
a) A short power-supply cord (or detachable power-supply cord)
should be used to reduce the risk resulting from becoming
entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.
b) Longer detachable power-supply cords or extensions cords
are available and may be used if care is exercised in their
use.
c) If a longer detachable power-supply cord or extension cord
is used:
1) The marked electrical rating of the cord set or extension
cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the
appliance;
2) The cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over
the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by chil-
dren or tripped over unintentionally; and
3) If the appliance is of the grounded type, the cord set or
extension cord should be a grounding-type-3-wire cord.

Additional Safeguards
Ensure that the appliance never comes into contact with water
while the plug is inserted into a power socket, especially if you
are using it in the kitchen and close to the sink.
Ensure that the power cable never gets wet or damp when the
appliance is in use. Route the cable so that it cannot be trapped
or damaged in any way.
Arrange for defective power plugs and/or cables to be replaced
as soon as possible by a qualified technician or by our Customer
Service Department to avoid the risk of injury.
Always disconnect the plug from the mains power socket after
use. Simply switching the appliance off is not sufficient, as it
remains under power for as long as the plug is inserted into the
power socket.
Caution! Hot surface!
Very hot steam can escape when opening the lid. It is therefore
best to wear oven mitts when opening the appliance.
Parts of the appliance will become hot during operation; you
should hold the appliance only by the grip. The browning con-
trol can also become hot after a certain amount of operation – it
is therefore best to wear oven mitts.
Baked foods can burn! Never set up and use the appliance in
the vicinity of inflammable objects, especially not under curtains.
US-EN 7
SDW 1200 B3
Do not use an external timer switch or a separate remote
control system to operate the appliance.
Never leave the appliance unattended during operation.
Ensure that the appliance, the power cable and the plug do
not come into contact with heat sources such as hotplates or
naked flames.
To protect the non-stick coating, do not use metallic tools such
as knives, forks, etc. If the non-stick coating is damaged, stop
using the appliance.

Preparing the waffle maker
1) First of all, clean the appliance as described in "Cleaning and
maintenance".
2) Lightly grease the baking surfaces with an oil suitable for
baking/grilling. This will make it easier to remove any manu-
facturing-related residue from the baking surfaces.
3) Briefly heat up the appliance once to maximum temperature,
keeping the lid closed.
To do this, insert the plug into the wall socket and set the
browning control to level 5.
During first use, you may notice a slight smell (there may also be minimal
smoke). This is normal and dissipates after a short time. Ensure sufficient
ventilation. For instance, by opening a window.
The red LED lights up whenever the power plug is in the socket.
The green LED lights up as soon as the appliance has heated up.
4) Pull out the plug and allow the appliance to cool down.
5) Clean the appliance again as described in "Cleaning and
maintenance". The waffle maker is now ready for use.
Making waffles
After preparing a batter suitable for waffle makers:
1) Heat the appliance with the lid closed. To do this, insert the
plug into the wall socket and turn the browning control to
level 3. The further you turn the browning control to the
right, the darker the waffles will be.
US-EN 11
SDW 1200 B3
If you are using a low-fat batter, such as sour-cream batter, lightly grease
the baking surfaces with a type of margarine or oil suitable for baking.
When the green LED lights up, the appliance has heated up.
2) Spread the batter evenly on the lower baking tray. To deter-
mine the right amount of batter for your waffle, pour the batter
on the baking surfaces until it just touches the edge. If neces-
sary, increase or reduce the amount of batter when you cook
the next batch of waffles. Make sure that the batter does not
run over the edge of the baking trays.
Now close the lid.
3) After no less than 2 minutes, you can open the lid to check the
progress. Opening the lid any earlier will rip the waffle.
The waffles are ready after about 3 minutes.
As the ideal browning level depends on personal taste and the type of
batter, baking times can vary: Bake the waffles until they have reached
your preferred level of browning.
You can control the level of browning by adjusting the browning control
2 or the baking time. This allows you to bake golden to crispy brown
waffles.
Be careful not to damage the non-stick coating on the baking
surfaces when you remove the waffles. Otherwise, the waffles will
be more difficult to remove in the future.
You do not need to re-grease the baking surfaces for every new waffle.
4) After cooking the last waffle, remove the plug from the power
socket and allow the device to cool down completely.

Cleaning and maintenance
Never open the device housing. There are no
user-serviceable elements inside. When the housing is open, there
is a risk of receiving a potentially fatal electrical shock.
Before cleaning the appliance, unplug it and
wait until it has cooled down completely. Risk of injury!
Never clean the appliance under running
water or submerge it in water. The appliance could be irreparably
damaged!
To avoid irreparable damage, make sure no
moisture penetrates the appliance.
Do not clean the surface with abrasive cleaning
agents, or sharp or scratchy objects.
Never use any hard items to clean the appli-
ance. These can damage the surfaces of the baking trays.
After use, first clean the baking surfaces with a dry paper
towel to remove fat residues.
Then, clean all surfaces and the power cord with a slightly
damp cloth. Thoroughly dry the appliance before using it
again.
For greasy residue:
Apply a mild detergent to a damp cloth. Use it to wipe off the
fatty residues.
If they still do not come off, use a soft dishwashing brush.
Wipe off any detergent residues using a cloth moistened with
clean water.
Thoroughly remove all residual detergent from the cloth and re-
peat the cleaning process as often as required until all residue
has been removed from the baking surfaces. Otherwise, the
residue could spoil the next batch of waffles!
US-EN 13
SDW 1200 B3
If there are baked-in residues:
Never use hard items to clean the appliance.
They can damage the non-stick surfaces of the baking surfaces.
Place a wet cloth on baked-in residues to soften them. After-
wards, you can remove the softened residues with the wet
cloth.
Storage
Allow the appliance to cool down completely before putting it into
storage.
Wind the power cord around the cord retainer on the bottom
of the appliance and secure it with the clip.
Store the appliance in a dry place.

tion about disposal is available on the Internet at www.epa.gov.
