All setting data for the appliance are listed in these operating instructions.
On the appliance you can find them on an information plate (or on the
identification plate).
If a setting is changed, this must be indicated accordingly.
This appliance is not connected to a pipe for extracting combustion
products. It must be installed and connected in accordance with the
applicable installation conditions.
The use of a gas cooker causes heat and humidity to build up in the room
where the appliance is installed. For this reason the appliance should only
be operated in a well ventilated room.
The appliance should only be connected to the gas mains by a qualified gas
fitter, who is also the only person who should carry out any adjustment,
conversion work and the initial start-up. The statutory regulations and con-
nection conditions of the local gas supply company should be observed in

Clean the hob with water and some detergent.
Rewipe it with clear water and finally dry it.
Using the rings
The nominal output of the various burners can be found in the table entitled
“Table of heat input” (see p. 20).
Using the various rings:
The high-speed ring is used
- for frying meat before it is roasted,
- to bring large amounts of liquid to the boil.
The normal ring is used (GKS 644.0 only)
- to prepare medium-sized portions of food,
- for frying meat.
The simmering ring is used
- for braising and keeping food warm,
- for preparing smaller amounts of food,
- for cooking food that tends to burn and become stuck to the bottom of the
pan.
Switching the rings on and off
The appliance GKS 324.0 has two rings, GKS 644.0 has four rings.
Each ring has its own control knob. Which control knob belongs to which ring
is indicated by the symbols on the operation panel.
Next to the control knobs for the rings are the symbols for setting the flame
high setting the flame low and “OFF” (). The flame can be set to any
desired height between high and low. You should start cooking on full flame
and then continue on a lower flame.
To switch on the ring, press down the
control knob and turn to the left (full
flame).
After the flame has ignited, keep the
control knob depressed for a short time
(max. 10 seconds), until the flame
burns automatically when the control
knob is released.
To switch off the ring, turn the control
knob to the “OFF” () setting.
Notes on the right types of saucepans
Using the right types of saucepans will help you to save time and energy.
Select a saucepan with a diameter that fits the size of the ring.
GKS 324.0/GKS 644.0 15
Recommended saucepan diameters:
High-speed ring: 22 - 24 cm
Normal ring (GKS 644.0 only): 18 - 20 cm
Simmering ring*: 12 - 16 cm
* Smaller saucepans can only be used on the simmering ring with the aid of
the cross support for small pots.
Notes on use
- For technical reasons to do with the gas supply you should not use
additional support rings on the burners.
- Using saucepans with a diameter that fits the rings avoids the saucepans
getting too close to the control knobs, which could cause the control knobs
to heat up or become damaged.
- Do not use small saucepans on a ring which is too large for them. In many
cases this leads to unnecessary energy consumption.
- Do not place an empty saucepan onto a lit ring and do not allow food to
boil dry.
Cross support for small pots
The cross support for
small pots can be placed
over the simmering ring
onto the saucepan sup-
port so that small pots
can be safely used.
Cleaning and care
Do not use any abrasive or aggressive cleaning or scouring agents such as
steel wool, soap-impregnated steel wool, metal or plastic sponges or similar
agents with an abrasive surface.
Incrustation due to boilied over foods are best presoftened with a wet cloth.
Then remove them with a glass scraper. Sugar and melted plastic should
be removed while the cooking area is still hot.
Care for your glass-ceramic cooking area once a week. Regular care builds
up a protective layer and also eases day-to-day cleaning. Please follow the
instructions of the cleaner or cleanser manufacturer concerned. Even heavy
soiling can be cleaned with a cleanser and enough water. Wipe dry with a
cloth.
The burner covers and the saucepan supports
Do not use any abrasive or aggressive cleaning or scouring agents such as
steel wool, soap-impregnated steel wool, metal or plastic sponges or similar
agents with an abrasive surface.
Let the burner components cool down before cleaning them.
Clean the burner covers and the saucepan supports in warm water. Then
carefully rub them dry.
Never use soda or cleaning agents that contain chlorine to clean any parts
of the burners. Alkaline cleaning agents and oven sprays can damage the
surfaces.
When you replace the burner covers, make sure that the pins lock into the
grooves.
Avoid dirt burning and becoming permanent. More stubborn dirt and food
remains which have burned and become stuck should be soaked before the
items are cleaned.
What to do if trouble occurs...
=Repairs may only be carried out by a qualified technician!
You can deal with some problems that occur yourself. First check whether

Assembly and installation
Safety instructions
=Take heed of the safety instructions on page 13!
Caution! The permissible category for connecting the appliances can vary
from region to region. If you are in any doubt, you should enquire at your
local gas supply company to find out which categories of appliances come
into question. Check whether the details on the identification plate coincide
with the local connection conditions (type of gas and gas pressure) and with
the settings of the appliance. If you ascertain any discrepancies, the
appliance must be converted accordingly!
When connecting the appliance to the gas mains you should particularly
observe the relevant regulations and guidelines of the institutions of the
country where the appliance is operated. In Germany and Austria these are:
DVGW-TRGI 1986 Technical guidelines for gas installations (Germany)
TRF 1988/1996 Technical guidelines for liquefied petroleum gas (Germany)
ÖVGW-TRGI and TRG 2, part 1 Technical guidelines (Austria)
You should also observe the regulations of the local gas supply companies
and those stipulated by the authorities (e.g. fire protection regulations).
All work such as connection, putting the appliance into operation,
maintenance and repairs or carrying out settings and conversions should
always be done by a qualified gas fitter in conformity with the applicable
safety regulations. The legally binding regulations and connection conditions
of the local gas supply company should be observed in full. Work which is
improperly carried out can represent a potential safety hazard!
This appliance is not connected to a pipe for extracting combustion
products. It must be installed and connected according to the applicable
installation conditions. It is particularly important to ensure that adequate
ventilation measures are taken.
When the appliance is being connected or repaired it should be dis-
connected from the electricity supply. The energy supply should always be
turned off when repairs are being carried out on facilities that conduct gas.
Should the connection plug not be accessible, safeguard measures should
be carried out using line-protecting cutouts, fuses or contactors whose
contact opening has a width of at least 3 mm.
The openings to allow the extraction of fumes should not be covered over.
When converting from natural gas to liquefied petroleum gas, it is always
necessary to change the injectors of the burner jets. This also applies if the
reverse is the case. Such conversion work should always be carried out by
a qualified gas fitter.
Conversion to other types of gas must be clearly and indelibly marked on
the type plate.
No modifications should be made to the appliance unless with the explicit
consent of the manufacturer.
Requirements for installation
The room where the appliance is installed should have a volume of at least
20 m3 and it must be possible to ventilate it by a window or a door opening
out into the fresh air.
The hob is built into an opening in the worktop. This opening must be
prepared according to the installation dimensions specified below.
The worktop must be aligned horizontally. Make a clean cut into it for the
opening.
There must be no cross bars beneath the opening. They should be cut back
to at least the size of the opening in the worktop.
The distances at the front, rear and sides of the hob opening must conform
to the measurements shown in the drawing. The edges at the front and the
rear are based on a worktop depth of 600 mm. The rear edge will be wider
for worktops with a greater depth.
We recommend protecting the cut surfaces of the worktop opening with a
coat of waterproof paint.
To ensure ease of operation at the hob, tall cupboards at the side should
be at least 300 mm away.
Additional space for the gas connection is required below the hob.
The wall connection strip must be made of heat-resistant material and must
have no sockets in the area around the hob. We recommend using a
support strip made of plastic with a covering strip made of aluminium. The
lateral part on the worktop must not be longer than 30 mm.
The wall above the wall connection strip in the area around the appliance
must be made of non-inflammable material. Wood, plastic, PVC foil etc. are
not suitable.
In normal use very high temperatures may act on the surrounding items of
furniture. The plastic finish or the veneer of built-in kitchen furniture must
be protected by a heat-resistant adhesive (100 °C).
Cooker hoods and wall cupboards above the hob must be installed at a mi-
nimum distance of 650 mm.
Before installing the hob and any time that the hob is removed, the gasket
should be checked for signs of damage and to ensure that it fits perfectly.
Fit a new gasket if necessary.Do not use any additional adhesives such as
silicone, as there is a danger that plastic-coated worktops could be dama-
ged when the hob is removed.
Exception: Uneven worktops (e.g. worktops with ceramic tiles) require a
gasket made of a heat-resistant, permanently elastic sealing material (e.g.
with silicone, suitable for ceramic surfaces). Only apply this sealing material
around the edge of the hob, never underneath it!

Connecting the appliance to the gas supply
First check whether the gas and the gas supply pressure are correct. You can
find details on the correct gas supply pressure in the section entitled
“Technical data” (see p. 20).
You can see for what type of gas the built-in hob has been set on the adhesive
label (which is located on the underside of the appliance).
The appliance can be converted to run on a different type of gas. This is ex-
plained in the section entitled “Converting to different types of gas” (see p. 18)
The pipe for the gas connection is at the centre of the underside of the
appliance.
The required gas connection R ½" must be connected in accordance with the
current statutory installation conditions and guidelines of the country in que-
stion. In Germany, a gas connection may be carried out either as a fixed con-
nection with a gas shutoff valve or using an officially-approved gas safety pipe
with a socket.
It must be ensured that the connection parts are laid in such a way that they
cannot heat up and become damaged while the appliance is in operation and
that they cannot come into contact with the movable parts of the kitchen
elements.
Connecting the appliance to the electricity supply
An earthed shockproof socket is required for electrical connection. Electrical
connection must be carried out in accordance with national and local regula-
tions.
The mains connection for the appliance is rated for 220-240 V / 50 Hz. The
power consumption is 0.6 VA.
The connection cables must be laid in such a way that they do not heat up
and become damaged when the appliance is in operation.
Installation
Using clips makes it easier and quicker for you to install these units. You can
carry out the complete installation work from above.
First of all make a clean cut into the worktop. (see “Fitting dimensions”).
Make sure that the gasket is properly seated. If the worktops are uneven
(tiles etc.), you must also apply a temperature-resistant sealing mass around
the edge of the hob.
Do not apply the sealing mass underneath the hob onto the worktop as the
work surface will be damaged when the hob is removed.
Now convert the hob - if necessary - to a different type of gas. It is essential
to read chapter “Converting to different tips of gas”, page 18 onwards,
beforehand.
Then insert the clips on the cooking area worktop cut-out as shown in the
figures on the previous page, observing the clearances indicated.
