1. Mounting the SCA adapter
All units involved must be switched off before
mounting or removing the SCA adapter
on/from the flash unit or the flash unit on/from
the camera. Should your camera have a built-
in foldable flash unit make sure that it is com-
pletely folded down during operation with an
external flashgun !
For mounting or removing the SCA adapter on/from
the individual flash units please refer to the detai-
led description in the operating instructions of the
flash unit concerned..
Mounting the flash unit with SCA adapter on
the camera
Screw the knurled nut of the SCA adapter as far
as possible towards the head of the adapter
case. The locking pin in the adapter shoe is now
fully retracted into the case.
• Slide the adapter into the camera‘s flash shoe.
Screw the adapter’s knurled nut as far as possi-
ble towards the camera case to clamp the adap-
ter in position. If the camera does not have a
locking hole the spring-loaded locking pin retrac-
ts into the adapter case so that it does not dama-
ge the surface.
• = Dedicated function is supported by the
flash unit / camera
X = mecablitz does not switch off automatically
(no Auto-OFF function)
= With Leica M7, only possible in conjunction
with 44 MZ-2, 54 MZ-... and 70 MZ-...

Flash units of the SCA 300 system (mecablitz
60 CT-4 or 45 CL-4) additionaly require the
use of an SCA 3000C converter cable! Older
compact flashguns of the SCA 300 system
(not listed in this table) will be compatible
with the SCA 3502 adapter if you use an SCA
3000C converter cable in combination with
the Power Grip G 15, or an SCA 300E adapter
plus a 40-36 flash bracket.
1) Motor zoom control und maximum flash range
indication are automatically completed only
when using lenses with electric contacts.
2) When using lenses without electric contacts,
correct indication of the maximum flash range
is provided on the LC display of the mecablitz
only if aperture and zoom position have been
manually set on the mecablitz.
3. Control panel of the adapter
A hinged cover at the rear of the adapter conceals
a number of switches only intended for use of flas-
hguns of the SCA 3000 system. A recess at the
lower right permits the hinged cover to be easily
opened with a fingernail.
The position of the switches and the indicator
on the SCA 3502 adapter are only intended for use
of SCA 3000 flash units (mecablitz 32 Z-2, 32 MZ-
3, 40 MZ-..., 50 MZ-5) and flash units of the SCA
300 system (mecablitz 45 CL-4 and 60 CT-4, when
combined with the SCA 3000C converter cable).

Switch : Activation of manual flash exposure
compensation in TTL and auto flash
mode. The function is activated (ON)

Operation with flash units of the SCA 3002
system:
The switch positions on the SCA 3502 adapter are
irrelevant when using a flashgun of the SCA 3002
system (mecablitz 44 MZ-2, 54 MZ-..., 70 MZ-...).
Indicator is not illuminated!
Any settings that may be necessary for flash expo-
sure compensation are made on the mecablitz its-
elf; the flash exposure correction value is indicated
in the LC display of the mecablitz (see operating
instructions of the given mecablitz)
4. Possible flash modes
4.1 TTL flash control
The required light output of the mecablitz is mea-
sured off the film plane by a sensor inside the
camera and is controlled by the camera electro-
nics. That’s why TTL flash control will work correc-
tly only if a film is loaded in the camera.
The mecablitz 40 MZ-... and 50 MZ-5 also
permit partial light output levels to be used in
TTL flash mode, e.g. when the camera is in
winder mode.
Partial light output levels are limiting the maximum
possible amount of flash light to a manually set
value, e.g. 1/128. They must not be mistaken for
manual flash exposure compensation!
4.2 Auto flash mode
The sensor integrated in the mecablitz controls the
emitted light.
The mecablitz 40 MZ-... and 50 MZ-5 also
permit partial light output levels to be used in
the auto flash mode, e.g. when the camera is
in winder mode.

Partial light output levels are limiting the maximum
possible amount of flash light to a manually set
value, e.g. 1/128. They must never be mistaken for
a manual flash exposure compensation!
4.3 Manual flash mode
The mecablitz always emits the same defined amo-
unt of light. Depending on the mecablitz model, full
or partial light output levels can be chosen.
The „winder“ and „motor drive“ modes are
partial light output levels. The „stroboscopic“
mode is a manual flash mode with partial light
output levels.
4.4 Flash mode with guide number
control (GNC)
The amount of flash light emitted in the flash mode
with guide number control (GNC) is also based,
among other things, on the distance setting or the
camera’s automatic distance measuring system.
Consequently, the following must be observed,
depending on the given system:
The secondary reflector cannot be used.
The reflector must be set in its normal position.
The flash mode in the cordless Metz Remote
System is not supported.
Depending on the given flash unit and camera
type, the camera’s shutter will not be released
when the above functions are activated !
mecablitz 40MZ-…, 44MZ-2 and 50MZ-5
Set the flash unit in the TTL or EM flash mode (EM
= Easy-Mode TTL; only possible with 40MZ-1, 1i,
3, 3i and 50MZ-5) for flash mode with guide num-
ber control (except M8).

Set the switch GN on the SCA3502 adapter in
the GN position. The display on the adapter
lights up in green.
mecablitz 54MZ-… , 70MZ-…
Set the flash unit in the M GnC mode for flash mode
with guide number control. Continue depressing the
”Mode” button on the flash unit until the ”M” flash
mode flashes. While ”M” is flashing, turn the setting
dial on the flash unit anti-clockwise until ”GnC” is
displayed in place of manual partial light output.
The setting becomes immediately effective and is
automatically stored after approx. 5 sec.
The switch setting on the SCA3502 adapter is irre-
levant. The display on the adapter does not
light.
mecablitz 32Z-2, 32MZ-3, 45CL-4, 60CT-4
The flash mode with guide number control is not
supported. The camera’s shutter will not be relea-
sed if the flash unit is set at TTL. Select the flash
mode Automatic A, Manual M or Winder W on the
flash unit.
The switch setting on the SCA3502 adapter is irre-
levant. The display on the adapter does not
light.
mecablitz 45 CL-4 digital, 76 MZ-5 digital
• If you use a mecablitz 45 CL-4 digital or 76 MZ-5
digital, you can employ the second reflector.
• Set the switch on the adapter to "GN".
Select the "TTL" operating mode on the meca-
blitz 45 CL-4 digital or 76 MZ-5 digital.
In the flash mode with guide number control, flash
exposure compensation is only possible with
76 MZ-5 digital and must be set on the flashgun
.

5. Dedicated operation of adapter, camera
and flashgun
5.1 Automatic flash synch speed control
The camera automatically switches to flash synch
speed (1/250 s) after flash readiness has been
established. Depending on the camera’s operating
mode, shutter speeds slower than the flash synch
speed are retained.
If the Leica R9 is fitted with a mecablitz
54 MZ-..., there will be no flash synch speed
control in the HSS mode.
5.2 Flash readiness indication
After the mecablitz has been switched on or after a
flash has been fired, flash readiness is signalled by
a continuously lit flash symbol in the camera view-
finder and on the camera’s display (indication on
display only on LEICA R8).
If the mecablitz is switched on but not yet ready for
firing, the flash symbol in the camera viewfinder
and on the camera’s display flashes (indication on
display only on LEICA R8).
The flashgun can only be triggered if flash readin-
ess is established. If the mecablitz is switched on
but not ready for firing, the camera will operate in
the mode selected, but no flash will be fired when
the picture is shot.
5.3 Correct exposure confirmation
Correct exposure confirmation is given in the „TTL“
and „A“ flash modes. After a flash shot has been
taken its correct exposure is confirmed in the camera
viewfinder and on the display at the back of the came-
ra (indication on display only on LEICA R8 and R9).

Note for LEICA R8:
Depending on the exposure or camera setting, an
underexposure (Low = LO) or overexposure
(High = HI) warning may be given
The symbols in the LEICA R8 and R9 viewfinder
have the following meaning:
a) Flash symbol is lit:
Flash exposure is correct (ok ). Flash readiness is
retained.
No overexposure warning is given in the A
mode of the mecablitz.
b) Flash symbol flashes:
Flash exposure is correct (ok ). Flash readiness is
no longer provided.
In such an instance the camera operates in the day-
light mode until flash readiness is re-established.
No overexposure warning is given in the A
mode of the mecablitz.
c) Flash symbol / HI is lit:
The subject has been overexposed because it may
have been too close for the settings made.
No overexposure warning is given in the A
mode of the mecablitz.
d) Flash symbol / LO is lit:
The subject has been underexposed.
e) Flash symbol flashes / LO is lit:
The subject has been underexposed. Try and shoot
again using a larger aperture opening (smaller f-
number).

The symbols in the LEICA M6 TTL, M7 and M8
viewfinder have the following meaning:
a) Flash symbol is permanently lit:
Flash exposure was correct. Flash readiness is
retained.
b)
Flash symbol flashes at a high frequency
(approx. 4 Hz):
Flash exposure was correct but flash readiness is
momentarily not provided.
c) Flash symbol is extinguished:
Underexposure - e.g. as a result of too small an
aperture opening or too wide a flash-to-subject
distance.

instruction from the camera)
5.4 TTL flash control
Set the „TTL“ mode on the mecablitz.
Note for opera
tion with a mecablitz 40 MZ-... and
50 MZ-5:
The mecablitz 40 MZ-... and 50 MZ-5 also permit
partial light output levels to be set in TTL flash
mode. In this manner the maximum permissible
light output of the mecablitz can be limited in TTL
mode, for example when using the camera with a
winder.
The use of partial light output levels must
not be mistaken for flash exposure compen-
sation !

In the „TTL“ mode, the flash exposure is determi-
ned by way of average metering through a sensor
inside the camera. This sensor measures the light
that reaches the film through the lens and is reflec-
ted off the film plane. When the necessary amount
of light for a correct exposure has been obtained,
the camera electronics sends a signal to the meca-
blitz which causes the flash to be instantly cut off.
The benefit of TTL flash mode is that all factors
which could affect the film exposure are automati-
cally taken into account, such as filters, variable
apertures of zoom lenses, extension tubes for clo-
se-ups, etc.
When making tests in the TTL mode, a section
of film must be loaded in the camera to obtain
correct metering results. A test flash to check
TTL flash operation or the maximum flash
range can only be triggered by the camera,
and not with the manual firing button (test
button) on the mecablitz.
No manual flash exposure corrections are made for
„normal“ TTL flash control.
mecablitz 32 Z-2, 32 MZ-3, 40 MZ-..., 45 CL-4,
50 MZ-5, 60 CT-4:
Set switch on the SCA 3502 adapter (for activa-
tion of flash exposure compensation) to its left-
hand position (=deactivated). Indicator on the
adapter is extinguished.
mecablitz 54 MZ-.., 44 MZ-2, 45 CL-4 digital,
70 MZ-.. and 76 MZ-5 digital:
The position of the switch on the adapter is insigni-
ficant. Indicator on the adapter is extinguished.

No manual flash exposure compensation is set on
the mecablitz (if necessary, deactivate exposure
compensation; see operating instructions of the
given mecablitz). No correction value is indicated
on the LC display of the mecablitz. Only modes “A
and “M” are possible when using the the digital
module R with the R9. The “TTL mode is not sup-
ported by digital module R.
5.5 Flash exposure compensation
(manual flash exposure compensation = override
of flash)
For normal TTL flash control, the flash is used as
the main light source.
There are certain photographic situations where the
flash exposure metering system („TTL“ and „A“) of
the camera or the mecablitz can be deceived. This
may particularly be the case with a dark subject in
front of a bright background (the subject will be
underexposed) or a bright subject in front of a dark
background (the subject will be overexposed).
To overcome this problem in such a photographic
situation, and still achieve a correct exposure in TTL
flash mode, the flash intensity of the mecablitz can
be influenced in the „TTL“ and „A“ (auto) modes.
Another possibility for flash exposure compensati-
on is to use the mecablitz as fill-in light to brighten
up darker sections, instead of a main light source.
On the mecablitz 40 MZ-..., 50 MZ-5, 54 MZ-... , 70
MZ-... and 76 MZ-5 digital, the maximum flash
range indicated in the LC display is adapted to the
selected flash exposure compensation. In the event
of a minus correction, the distance range is longer
because the flash output is reduced (the mecablitz

is deceived by a pretended faster film speed). In
the reverse case, a plus correction results in the
display of a shorter distance range.
Note for LEICA R8:
Depending on the correction made, a „+“ or „-“
will light up beside the flash symbol in the camera
viewfinder.
mecablitz 32 Z-2, 32 MZ-3, 40 MZ-..., 45 CL-4,
50 MZ-5, 60 CT-4:
The SCA 3502 adapter permits the flash intensity
to be corrected by between -3 1/3 EV and +3 1/3
EV. Flash exposure compensation must always be
activated on the SCA 3502 adapter. To do so, slide
switch to the right (= flash exposure compen-
sation is ON). Indicator lights up. You can now
adjust whole EV values between -3 EV to +3 EV
with switch , and one-third increments with
switch .The sum of the two adjusted values pro-
duces the total correction value.
Manual flash exposure compensation is not possi-
ble if TTL fill-in flash control is automatically
activated by the camera (LEICA R8).
Example: A correction value of -2 2/3 EV is to be
set:

mecablitz 54 MZ-..., 70 MZ-...
mecablitz flash units of the SCA 3002 system
(mecablitz 54 MZ-..., 70 MZ-...) permit a manual
flash exposure correction value of between -3 EV
and + 3 EV to be set in 1/3 increments:
To do so, turn the setting disk on the mecablitz
54 MZ-... or on the control module of the
70 MZ-... until the arrow symbol on the LC dis-
play points at „EV“.
Then press the setting disk in the direction of the
arrow. While the arrow symbol is flashing, turn
the setting disk to select the desired flash expo-
sure correction value. Now press again the set-
ting disk in the direction of the arrow for storage.
The setting will automatically be stored after 5
seconds if the setting disk is not pressed. „EV“
and the set correction value

mecablitz 45 CL-4 digital, 76 MZ-5 digital
The flash exposure compensation in TTL or TTL
HSS mode must be set on the adapter when using
a mecablitz 45 CL-4 digital or on the flashgun
when using a mecablitz 76 MZ-5 digital.

Manual flash exposure correction with the
mecablitz 44 MZ-2
Manual flash exposure correction values can be set
in the TTL and automatic mode A by way of the
menu control on the mecablitz.
Setting a correction value
Set the TTL flash mode or the automatic flash
mode A on the mecablitz (see above).
Continue depressing the preselect key on
the mecablitz until EV and the correction value
(instead of the f-stop) flash on the display.
While the corresponding displays are flashing,
use the "+" and "-" keys to set the required cor-
rection value between -3.0 EV and + 3.0 EV in
one-third increments.
The setting becomes immediately effective.
The display changes after approx. 5 sec.: The
displayed correction value is replaced by the
aperture. EV will flash on the display to indicate
that a correction value has been set.
Cancelling the correction value
Continue depressing the preselect key on
the mecablitz until EV and the correction value
(instead of the f-stop) flash on the display.
While the corresponding displays are flashing set
the 0.0 correction value with the "+" and "-"
keys.
The setting becomes immediately effective.
The display changes after approx. 5 sec.: The
displayed correction value is replaced by the
aperture. The reference to an EV correction value
is no longer indicated by the LC display.

5.6 Flash bracketing „Fb“
Flash bracketing can be performed with the meca-
blitz 54 MZ-..., 70 MZ-5 and 76 MZ-5 digital in the
TTL and A modes.
A flash bracketing series consists of three succes-
sive flash shots with different flash exposure cor-
rection values. No correction factor is used for the
first exposure.
The second shot is taken with a minus correction
factor, and for the third shot a plus correction factor
is set. The correction factors only affect the flash
light. There is no correction of the ambient light
(background exposure). Flash bracketing is auto-
matically cancelled after the third shot.
Activa
ting flash bracketing on the mecablitz
54 MZ-.. and 70 MZ-5:
Repeatedly depress the „Select“ button on the
mecablitz 54 MZ-.. or 70 MZ-5 until „Fb“ is indi-
cated on the display. „EV“ and „OFF“ will then
flash on the display.
Turn the setting disk on the mecablitz to select
the desired EV value for flash bracketing.
Press the setting disk in the direction of the
arrow for storage. The setting will be automati-
cally stored after 5 seconds if the setting disk is
not pressed. „Fb1“ is now indicated on the
mecablitz display.
Activa
ting flash bracketing on the
mecablitz 76 MZ-5 digital:
Press the button “SEL repeatedly until “Select”
appears in the display.
Select the menu point „FB“ required with the

Up / Down buttons . The menu point selected
will be highlighted with a dark bar.
• Press the button “Set” and so confirm the choice
of the special function.
Enter the required setting with the Up / Down
buttons . The setting takes effect immedia-
tely.
Press the button “Return” repeatedly until
the normal display is shown. If the button
“Return” is not pressed, the display will
automatically return to its normal appearance
after approx. 5 seconds.
Flash bracketing sequence:
The first picture is shot without a correction factor.
No correction value is indicated on the display.
When the first shot has been taken, the display
changes to „Fb2“. In addition, „EV“ and the minus
correction factor for the second picture are indica-
ted. .After the second shot, the display changes to
„Fb3“ and additionally indicates „EV“ and the plus
correction factor for the third exposure.
The flash bracketing function is automatically can-
celled after the third shot and, if required, must be
re-activated for a new flash bracketing sequence.
To abort flash bracketing before the complete
series has elapsed, switch the mecablitz off
and on again with the main switch.
5.7 Manual fill-in flash control in the TTL flash
mode (only with LEICA R8 and R9)
Only possible in the camera modes „m“, „A“
and „T“! Set „TTL“ flash mode on the meca-
blitz.
