16 Ambient Light Sensing (ALS)
Ambient Light Sensing allows you to adjust the brightness of LEDs, used as source of backlight, depending on
the ambient brightness. This ensures an ideal visibility of the display and the keyboard. There are three fully
programmable groups which can be linked to the different current sources. These groups specify the change of
the current in accordance to ambient light, which is measured by a light sensor. For instance, one group could be
used for the keyboard backlight to decrease the current flowing through the LEDs at a rise of ambient brightness.
Additionally an internal smoothing filter is implemented in the AS3676.

17 Dynamic Backlight Luminance Scaling (DLS)
Dynamic Backlight Luminance Scaling is used to reduce the power consumption of the display backlight, which
results in an increase of the operating of the device which uses the AS3676. The basic principle is that a picture
shown on the display can be brightened up, so that there is less backlight brightness necessary. This is
especially practicable when showing a dark picture contents on the display.
The control unit to operate DLS is the display processor sending a PWM signal to the AS3676 and in parallel
changing the display content to compensate for a reduced brightness backlight.
An example of use:
DLS - example of use
A reduction down to 42 per cent is quite high and already remarkable for the human eye, so it is recommended
not to dim below 70 per cent.
