Lets take these one at a time.......
Any source in the Main System can be distributed to any Room, simultaneously.
As opposed to a standard Line Driver based Knekt system where the Main System pre-
amp RECORD output is distributed to all Rooms, the Intersekt enables the distribution
and control of up to 16 sources to any Room simultaneously.
When accessing a source which is already being listened to (in another Room ) the RCU
will inform the customer, not bad eh ?
Contents
4
Main System sources can be controlled independently.
A Line Driver based system transmits all control commands to ALL Main System sources,
e.g. a [ PLAY ] command will be sent round the entire Linn Line Remote Loop AND
echoed from each IR repeater output.
This will only present a problem if a customer has, for example, 2 Kremlin tuners or 2
generic RC5 CD players or 2 VCR’s.
( Remember: In a Line Driver based Knekt system a Linn AND a non RC5 source of
the same type will not have this particular problem. e.g. a Karik and a Pioneer CD
player ).
With an Intersekt, each source is controlled independently: commands for Tuner 1 are sent
ONLY to Tuner 1, commands for Tuner 3 are sent ONLY to Tuner 3. Each source input
on an Intersekt has a corresponding set of control i/p o/p sockets.
For a Linn source, commands are sent and status is read back via two phono sockets
connected to the Linn Line Remote sockets on each individual Linn source.
For a non-Linn source, commands are sent via one phono socket (and a phono to 3.5mm
adapter ) to the IR repeater for that particular source.
The wee adapter....
RS part nr 177-734 app 47p
Tandy ( Radio Shack ) have them as well.

Individual Rooms can be allocated certain sources.
Up to Installation software V1.03.
With a Line Driver system all Main System sources are available in all Rooms. You could
determine the amount of control over each source but ALL sources can be ‘listened to’.
Installation software V2.00: Introduced with the Intersekt.
Main System sources can, in effect, be ‘unplugged’ from individual Rooms. This allows
the customer to determine in which Rooms, for example, the Karik CD player can be
accessed and listened to.
Contents
6
Main System sources can be situated remotely from the Main System pre-amp.
This is the one that seems to cause a certain amount of confusion so a diagram of each of
the configurations is included.
The main thing to remember is.....
1. To have Intersekt ‘in parallel’ with the Main System pre-amp AND have control of the
Main System pre-amp functions from the Main System RCU then that pre-amp MUST
be a Linn Kairn.
2. To have a ‘Phantom’ Main Room, i.e. all the sources and the Intersekt in a cupboard
under the stairs then the Main Room becomes ‘just another Room’.
Why MUST the Parallel system have a Kairn ?, well...... It’s all down to the electronics
within the respective pre-amps.
A Kairn will respond to pre-amp commands from the Linn Line Remote input.
A Wakonda/Majik does NOT have any Linn Line Remote sockets or circuitry.
When a Sneaky Receiver is installed in a Wakonda/Majik the Linn Line Remote sockets
are for comms with local Linn sources.
The Wakonda/Majik will NOT respond to pre-amp commands from the Linn Line Remote
sockets on the Sneaky Receiver.
( The Wakonda/Majik with a Sneaky Receiver responds to pre-amp commands via
the RJ45 socket, i.e. the RCU ).

Expandable - up to 16 sources distributed to up to 128 Rooms.
The Intersekt ‘boxes’ come in three configurations....
1. Intersekt R8S8a STANDALONE box that will distribute 8 sources to up to 8
Rooms. This box is NOT expandable, it is a one off solution for customers who will
NEVER have a requirement to exceed the 8x8 limit.
2. Intersekt SES8a Source Expansion box that can accommodate up to 8 sources.
There is a maximum of 2 SES8 expansion boxes per system allowing up to 16 sources.
3. Intersekt RER16 a Room Expansion box that can distribute to up to 16
Rooms. A maximum of 8 RER16 expansion boxes can be linked to allow up to 128
Rooms.
In the Hints and Tips section at the end of this document you will find various System
options depending on whether the customer has a ‘Phantom’ or ‘Parallel’ Intersekt and
whether he has 1 or 2 RECORD devices.
On the next two pages you will find layouts for each of the ‘boxes’ and a 16 source 32
Room setup.

Designated Rooms can have Volume control over another Room or Rooms
During the installation of an Intersekt system Rooms can be allocated to a GROUP or
GROUPS, and within a GROUP certain Room RCU’s can be specified as having Volume
control over ALL other Rooms in that GROUP.
What does it all mean ?
Well,
if, at installation, the RCU in the Kitchen was allocated Volume control over all the
Rooms downstairs then when the phone rings the customer can turn down the volume in
all those Rooms.
or,
from the bedroom the customer could turn down the volume in all the kids bedrooms
when it was time for sleep.
What the final volume limit is set too ( as a % of maximum ) will remain the maximum
allowable in all the ‘other’ Rooms in that GROUP.
When the volume in a Room or GROUP of Rooms is above that set by the designated
RCU the volume in that Room or GROUP of Rooms will reduce automatically to the new
maximum.
When the volume level is re-adjusted to a higher level the volume in the Room or GROUP
of Rooms will remain as is until the individual RCU in that Room or GROUP of Rooms is
adjusted.
Pretty trick eh ?

Designated Rooms can access Record functions in the Main system.
The Record functions of the Main System VCRs or Tapedecks can ONLY be accessed by
the RCU’s allocated that facility at system installation.
At present, this facility can present you with a few potential ‘funnies’......... read on....
R8S8 has 1 Room expansion card.
RER16 has 2 Room expansion cards.
Each Room expansion card has 8 Room RJ45 sockets and 2 sets of RECORD output
phono sockets.
In the Installation software (V2.00 onwards) , when you install a RECORD device, a VCR
or a Tape Deck, one of the Room outputs, Room 1 or Room 2, will be allocated to that
RECORD output. Therefore you will LOSE one Room for each RECORD device.
This could present a potential problem that you must be aware of.......
In a Phantom Intersekt system, with 2 RECORD devices, there wont be a problem as long
as the first ‘Room’ is Room 3.
In a Parallel Intersekt system, i.e. a Kairn AND a Main System RCU, Room 1 is allocated
by default. Therefor, at present, with this configuration, an Intersekt R8S8 system will
only allow 1 RECORD device, which MUST be allocated to Room 2.
In an RER16 situation the problem would only appear if the customer wished to access
the RECORD functions of 4 devices.
For the next Installation Software revision, when you install a RECORD device you will
be given the option of accessing the RECORD functions of VCRs and Tapedecks. If you
decide NOT to access the RECORD functions then the record outputs will NOT use up a
Room output.
You can allocate a RECORD device to a Room Interface that does NOT exist - eh ?
In an 8x8 you have only 1 Room interface card so if you allocate the RECORD
device to Room Interface 2 Room 1 then you will retain access to Room Interface 1
Room 1.
We do try.

Global Clock updates to all RCU’s.
In a 128 Room Intersekt system it would be a bit of a job to go round all 128 Rooms and
update each RCU clock when the clocks change twice a year !!!!
With Intersekt, when the clock is changed on an RCU the customer is invited to send the
new TIME to ALL RCU’s in the system.
Contents
15
Switch off the entire Knekt system from one RCU.
There is a facility, with Intersekt, that will power off the entire Knekt system. To actually
disconnect power from the whole system each Room would require a Relay Boks. If there
is no Relay Boks then the Power Down command will put every Room into ‘MUTE’ by
turning all RCU’s in the Knekt system ‘off’.
Press and HOLD the ON/OFF switch on the RCU. The RCU display will count down, 5-
4-3-2-1, and shutdown the full system (Disconnect all sources from ALL rooms!).
There is NO global power on facility. Each Room will revert to it’s previous state when
that Room’s RCU is switched ‘on’.
Switching ON the Intersekt.
With an Intersekt system with RER16 and SES8 make sure that you switch on the SES8
FIRST. Otherwise the SES8 doesn’t now what Sources are IR controlled, it assumes that
every source is a Linn source (which it should be guv!).
Switching OFF the Intersekt system.
Make sure that every RCU is in Stand-by mode. If the RCU is getting a Source STATUS,
the Intersekt is too busy waiting for the RCU to finish it’s task and sometimes doesn’t
have enough time to go into Standby itself. This can cause the Intersekt to loose its
memory and has to be re-setup

Other Stuff - hints and tips.
Linstall V2.00 HELP - with the Linstall software loaded onto your screen hit [ F1 ] for
some useful help information. Look at the [ problem systems ] page for details on
downloading to individual RCU’s from DOS - very useful in an Intersekt system where
one RCU ( three miles away ) won’t download successfully.
For configuring the Intersekt within Linstall have a look in Knektips.doc
Kairn in a Parallel Intersekt System.
Communication between the Main System RCU and the Main System Kairn are via the
Linn Line Remote sockets of Source 1 on the Intersekt. The Main System RCU should be
connected to the RCU RJ45 socket of Room 1 on the Intersekt.
When installing a Kairn in parallel with an Intersekt, you MUST remember to connect the
sources to the Intersekt in the same order as they are connected to the Kairn.

The Intersekt Room Interface boards can be re-named, as long as the RCU’s serial No’s in
the Linstall are connected to the Room Interface board number. Otherwise everything will
get confused.

Controlling 58kHz Devices with an Intersekt system.
For some of the Satelitte recievers, it is necessary to output with a IR carrier frequency of 58kHz. The
extra equipment required is a Knekt Line Driver and a Doubri (RJ45 to Phono Convertor).
Conversion of the Line Driver.
The following change below is required:-
1. Short out R302.
2. Bridge resistor R301 with a resistor of 470.
3. Adjust Vr301 for approx 58kHz, (U301 pin 3). This step done while transmitting the code.
