Product information
UniTools
®
are phantom-powered in-line
microphone accessories that can be used to
combine a channel, gate an input, roll off the
response, add a switch, notch out a frequency
or pad down a signal. Compact, economical
and easy to use, they provide outstanding,
reliable performance that would otherwise
require a fully-equipped accessory rack.
Available in six function-specific models,
UniTools are intended primarily for use with
UniPoint
®
and similar condenser micro-
phones. All have professional XLR-type
input/output connectors, and require
balanced cables and 24-48V DC phantom
power for operation. (“In” and “Out” mark-
ings refer to the
mic audio
.) All units permit
phantom voltage to pass on to the micro-
phone. Featuring rugged steel housings,
UniTools can be installed anywhere in-line,
either at the mixer input or near the mic.

AT8681 UniMix
®
2-to-1 Mic Combiner with Balance Control
AT8682 UniGate
®
Voice-operated Switch with Adjustable Threshold
AT8683 UniSteep
®
80 Hz Mic Hi-pass Filter
AT8681 SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT IMPEDANCE 10,000 ohms
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE 250 ohms
MAXIMUM INPUT LEVEL +15 dBV (1% T.H.D. at 1 kHz)
MAXIMUM ATTENUATION 33 dB at 1 kHz
Description: The AT8681 combines the output from
two microphones into one channel. The balance
control attenuates each microphone by 6 dB (typical)
at midpoint.
Operation: To connect the UniMix, plug two micro-
phones into the XLRF-type input connectors (marked
“In”). Then run a cable from the unit’s XLRM-type
output connector (marked “Out”) to the mixer input.
Adjust the Balance control until the output of the
UniMix is equal for both microphones.
AT8682 SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT IMPEDANCE 2,500 ohms
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE 460 ohms
MAXIMUM INPUT LEVEL +6 dBV (1% T.H.D. at 1 kHz)
FREQUENCY RESPONSE 25-20,000 Hz
GATE ATTENUATION 10 dB typical
MINIMUM THRESHOLD –85 dBV
Description: The AT8683 provides a steep low-
frequency attenuation to improve the quality of
sound pickup under difficult conditions without
affecting voice quality. Useful for minimizing back-
ground ambience, air conditioning rumble, mechani-
cal noise and other undesired low-frequency sounds.
Operation: To connect the UniSteep, plug the micro-
phone cable into the XLRF-type input connector
(marked “In”). Then run a cable from the unit’s
XLRM-type output connector (marked “Out”) to the
mixer input.
AT8683 SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT IMPEDANCE 2,100 ohms
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE 150 ohms
MAXIMUM INPUT LEVEL +3 dBV (1% T.H.D. at 1 kHz)
FREQUENCY RESPONSE 80-20,000 Hz
CORNER FREQUENCY 80 Hz
LOW-FREQUENCY ROLL-OFF 18 dB/octave
Description: The AT8682 automatically attenuates a
channel by 10 dB (typical) when microphone is not in
use. LED indicates when gate is open.
Operation: To connect the UniGate, plug the micro-
phone cable into the XLRF-type input connector
(marked “In”). Then run a cable from the unit’s
XLRM-type output connector (marked “Out”) to the
mixer input.
The Threshold control sets the reference level that
must be exceeded for a microphone to be consid-
ered “in use.” Adjust to keep background noise level
from triggering the microphone.

AT8684 UniMute
®
Mic Attenuator with User-definable Switch Function
AT8684 SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT IMPEDANCE 5,300 ohms
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE 500 ohms
MAXIMUM INPUT LEVEL +17 dBV (1% T.H.D. at 1 kHz)
MUTING ATTENUATION 57 dB at 1 kHz
Description: The AT8684 is a versatile attenuator
which permits easy in-line switch installation and
flexible application. Type of external single-pole
switch the user supplies determines muting function;
closed contact causes muting. Use for on/off, push-
to-talk, push-to-mute, etc. (Additional, isolated poles
on the switch may be used to control
logic-level DC
circuits.)
Operation: To connect the UniMute, plug the micro-
phone cable into the XLRF-type input connector
(marked “In”). Then run a cable from the unit’s
XLRM-type output connector (marked “Out”) to the
mixer input.
The UniMute may be installed anywhere in-line.
Once mounted, connect an external single-pole
switch to the push terminals marked “Switch” and
check for proper operation.
AT8685 UniTrap
®
Constant-Q Mic Notch Filter with Adjustable Frequency
AT8685 SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT IMPEDANCE 2,500 ohms
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE 300 ohms
MAXIMUM INPUT LEVEL –7 dBV (1% T.H.D. at 1 kHz)
NOTCH FREQUENCY RANGE LO 100-1,000 Hz
HI 1,000-10,000 Hz
NOTCH REJECTION 30 dB typical
Description: The AT8685 is a tunable notch filter
capable of attenuating a narrow frequency band that
is susceptible to feedback. A notch 30 dB deep tunes
in two ranges for more precise control.
Operation: To connect the UniTrap, plug the micro-
phone cable into the XLRF-type input connector
(marked “In”). Then run a cable from the unit’s
XLRM-type output connector (marked “Out”) to the
mixer input.
While the system is feeding back, adjust the Range
switch and Frequency control to remove the feedback.
AT8686 UniLim
®
Mic Limiter with Adjustable Threshold
AT8686 SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT IMPEDANCE 6,000 ohms
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE 80 ohms
MAXIMUM INPUT LEVEL +20 dBV (1% T.H.D. at 1 kHz)
LIMITING LEVEL RANGE –55 dBV to –20 dBV
Description: The AT8686 keeps the output of a
microphone from exceeding a desired level. This
function serves to set maximum level in a mic
channel and prevent the overloading of mixer input
stages.
Operation: To connect the UniLim, plug the
microphone cable into the XLRF-type input connector
(marked “In”). Then run a cable from the unit’s
XLRM-type output connector (marked “Out”) to the
mixer input.
To adjust the threshold, begin by turning the
Threshold control to its highest level (fully clockwise).
Next, speak, sing or play an instrument loudly into
the microphone to create a strong signal that
causes excessive level or overloads the mixer input.
Gradually turn the threshold down on the UniLim
until the overload ceases, or until the desired maxi-
mum level is reached.
