WELCOME TO YOUR NEW VCR...
To help you get started using yourVCR with as little
reading as possible, we've put all the basic information
needed in the first three sections. To help you along,
there's even a QuickSet Guide which walks you through
several setup steps at once.
GETTING STARTED
Before this first step, though, learning about
the time and date, your remote control's features,
working with channels, and basic video tape operations
are essential to get all you can out of theVCR. Once you
are comfortable with these features, feel free to refer to
other sections because they cover the more detailed
information.
WHAT REMAINS?
The final sections of this manual contain playback and
recording information, a detailed connections section, and
a reference section including troubleshooting tips,
warranty information, and an index.

Follow these steps whenever you need to install or change the
batteries in your VCR's remote.
1. Remove the cover of the battery compartment.
2. Place the batteries into the remote's back panel. Match the positive
(+) and negative (-) ends of each battery to the diagram inside the
battery compartment.
3. Replace the cover.
STEP 3: CONNECT YOUR VCR
If you connect your VCR to your home antenna or cable system and
then to your TV, use the VCR's IN (FROM ANT.) and OUT (TO TV)
jacks for a good signal as shown to the right.
If you have a TV with AUDIO/VIDEO jacks, use the jacks for a better
connection. Refer to the section, Connections, toward
the back of the manual, for additional connection options.
STEP 4: PLUG IN THE VCR
Your VCR's power cord has a plastic band strung through the blades.
Remove plastic band before plugging the cord into the power outlet.
To remove band, cut with a pair of scissors and pull it free of the
blades. Once the plastic is removed, match the wide blade of the
power cord to the wide slot in the AC outlet. Be sure to insert the plug
completely.

3 or channel 4 -- the channel you want to use on your TV.
If you connect your VCR using the AUDIO/VIDEO jacks
with audio/video cables, select the TV's video input with
the remote's TV and INPUT buttons to see the signal. See page 59
for more information about your TV's input channel.
STEP 6: TURN ON THE VCR
PressON-OFF on the VCR's front panel or VCR1 on the remote
control to turn on the VCR. The first time you turn the VCR on, a menu
screen appears. This is the start of a QuickSet Guide which helps you
pick different options for your VCR.
STEP 7: USING THE QUICKSET GUIDE
The QuickSet Guide is an automated procedure that helps you set up
your VCR. The first time you turn on your VCR, the first screen of the
Guide appears.

STEP 8: FINISHING YOUR SETUP
Setting up your VCR with the QuickSet Guide can take you to many
different on-screen displays depending on the options you chose. For
example, after completing the auto channel search, you will see a
screen asking if you want to set up your VCR to control a satellite
receiver.
SAT SETUP
Would you like to set
up the VCR to control
a SAT receiver?
2 No
Of course, if you have no satellite receiver, you will select "NO" for
this screen. If you do have satellite service, make sure you see the next
section, Setting Up Your VCR, for important information about how
your VCR works with your satellite receiver before you complete the
next steps in the set up.
Another important series of stepsin the QuickSet Guide is when you are
asked to set up your VCR Plus+ Gold programming system. Through
this system, your VCR automatically downloads information sent by
local broadcasters to assign channel numbers to corresponding stations
soyou don't have to "map" the channels manually (tell your VCR which
station is on what channel). This step is identified by the screen:

The rest of the setup
may take a few hours to
complete. Would you like

If you select "Later" in the SETUP menu, then downloading the
information will occur overnight. This method allows you to watch
and record programming, through your VCR, but you cannot use the
VCR Plus+ system programming codes until the next day (after all,
your VCR doesn't know which channel iswhich yet).
SETUP
The rest of the setup
will run automatically
at night. Please turn
off the VCR before
midnight.

features (e.g., setting the clock) with
the arrow buttons.
Use the left and right arrows to move
from one location to another, such as
moving from hours to minutes when
setting up a timer program.

If you select "Now," then you mustshut off the VCR. You will not be
able to use the VCR, but you can still watch your TV.
SETUP
The rest of the setup
will run automatically.
Please turn off VCR now.
Setup is complete when
"DOWN" & "LOAD" stop
flashing on the display.
Press MENU to cancel
You will see "DOWN" and "LOAD" flash on the display panel of your
VCR while the channel information is being gathered. Once your VCR
has all its data, DOWN and LOAD will stop flashing and the VCR
Plus+ GOLD programming system is ready to use.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
After DOWN and LOAD has stopped flashing on your VCR, you can
expect one of three things: your VCR was successful, partially successful
or downloading VCR Plus GOLD information failed.
A successful download means all information was gathered and you can
useyour PlusCode programming numbers. Partially successful meansthere
was a question about which downloaded channel information is correct.
SETUP
Your area has multiple
cable companies. Please
identify your cable
company by selecting the
list that matches your
channels.
Press MENU to continue
If this is the case, you will be asked to select which channels your local
broadcasters use with a screen that looks something like:
Select the row that
matches your channels.

Press CLEAR to cancel
If asked to select which channels match your local viewing area, select
the proper corresponding numbers and then you will be ready to use
your PlusCode system numbers to record.

If your VCR Plus+ GOLD system fails to download all the necessary
information for any reason, then you will be shown the screen:

Would you like to:
I Try again
2 Finish setup manually
3 Cancel the Auto Setup
If you try the setup again, then you will have to wait for DOWN and
LOAD to stop flashing on the front panel to see if data was gathered
successfully.
If you choose to manually set up your channel mapping, turn to the
next section, Setting Up Your VCR,for more information.
If you cancel the automatic setup, you should turn off AUTO VCR
Plus+ or you will keep getting the prompt that automatic setup was
unsuccessful since VCR Plus+ GOLD attempts to download new data
every time the VCR is turned off. You can do this by going to the MAIN
menu, then choosing (4) for CHANNELS, choosing (4) for VCR Plus+
setup, and then choosing (2) to turn off the feature.
For More Information...
If you are having problems with any
QuickSet Guide element, including
VCR Plus+, you can always set up your
preferences manually. See the next
section, Setting Up the VCR, for more
information.
