R, G, B Analysers & Polarisers
The Barco 6000 series of projectors are fitted with R, G, B Analysers and
Polarisers. These Analysers and Polarisers are manufactured using organic
films, which can deteriorate with age – they should therefore be considered as
long-term consumable items.
Typical lifetimes for the Analysers and Polarisers used in the Barco *6000
and 7000 series of our LCD projectors are as follows:
Type of Projector Part Description

Replacement of R, G, B Analysers & Polarisers
Field replacement of the analysers and polarisers is possible. However,
Barco strongly recommends that replacement be carried out only by
trained Barco Service Engineers.
R, G, B LCD Panels & Combining Optics
The Barco 6000 and 7000 series of projectors are fitted with LCD Panels
that should be considered as long-term consumable items.
In order to allow the users of LCD display systems to effectively
schedule maintenance downtime, the typical lifetimes of LCD panels and
combining optics used in the Barco *6000 and 7000 series of projectors
are provided as follows:
Typical Lifetimes for LCD Panels & Combining Optics

Description
MTBF’s will vary depending on colour, operating and environmental
conditions.
LCD MTBF will differ between colours, with the colour blue displaying
signs of deterioration first. This phenomenon is due to the high UV and
near-UV content and the spectral power distribution of light; blue has the
shortest wavelength with the highest frequency thus resulting in the
highest energy level. Red exhibits a lower energy level and contains little
or no UV light.
As the LCD panel deteriorates, the alignment layer within the LCD panel
deteriorates, resulting in the gradual loss in the ability to align the liquid
crystal molecules. This is a cumulative process, eventually leading to the
misalignment of the liquid crystal layers.
After some time, gas begins to form inside the LCD panel, thereby
displacing the liquid crystal material and no longer influencing the
polarisation direction of the light. This will eventually lead to loss of
transmission in the blue channel, corresponding to the end of life of the
panel.
According to the LCD panel manufacturer, panel lifetime is inversely
proportional to the incident power density. The effect therefore, is greater
for higher brightness projectors and/or smaller LCD panels. Projectors
installed with the Micro Lens Array (MLA) may show signs of increased
degradation as the micro lenses focus light onto the alignment layer,
thereby locally increasing the incident power density.
As with most consumable items the lifetime of these units is dependent
upon the conditions in which the product is used. Primarily, temperature,
humidity and environmental conditions affect the life expectancy.
The revision of the environmental recommendations ensures
consistency with the standard used in MTBF calculations.
Replacement of LCD Panels
Field replacement of the LCD panels, combining optics & mechanical
mounts is not possible. Failure of one or more of the panels will require
the projector to be returned to Barco for replacement of the panels to
take place.
The X-cubes (LCD panels & combining optics) must be pre-aligned
(converged) at the factory and replaced as a whole unit. Therefore, if
only one panel or an associated component within that unit fails, all will
need to be replaced. After factory replacement, the transmission curve of
T0304014_398 Page 5 of 5
the LCD panels is calibrated (TCR) and uniformity adjustments are made
to accommodate the varying thickness variations within the LCD panels.
Notes
1. Temperature can affect the rate of reaction of the panels and the
degradation of the layers.
By reducing the ambient temperature around the projector to 20°C
(68°F), the lifetime of the panels can be increased.
2. The above information highlights the need to implement the
recommended monthly maintenance routine with regards to the fans
and dust filters.
3. The frequency between checking the air filter will be dependent upon
the environmental conditions of the Display System (mainly with
regards to dust or other ventilation obstructions) and should be
adjusted accordingly.
Replacement of the analysers and polarisers at the recommended intervals
can extend the lifetime of the LCD panels.
Failure to observe this recommendation may result in damage to the projector.
