UsingtheTeleticsAirborne
Overview
TheAirborneradiosystemisabyproductofTeleticsverysuccessfulw*intercomsystem,usedon
thousandsofdrillingrigsthroughouttheworld.TheAirborneMESHradiosystemhasbeenprovenin
verychallengingindustrialenvironments,andissimpletosetupanduse.
EachAirbornehasanEthernetportforusewithacomputer.AllAirborneunitsinasystemactasa
commonunmanagedEthernetswitch,sharingtheavailablebandwidthonthesystem.
TheEthernetconnectionprovidedbyanAirbornesystemiscompletelytransparenttoanythingelse
beingsentoverthenetwork.Youshouldsimplytreatitasa“wirelesswire”.Thedataspeedforthe
Airbornesystemis12to48Mbps,dependingonsignalstrength.Thisissimilartostandardoffice
Ethernetspeedson100BTEthernet,andthisconnectionisalwaysfasterthantheinternetconnection
backhaulprovidedbysatelliteorcellularthatisprovidedtothesite.
RecommendedEnclosures,Accessories,CablingandAntennas
Thenumberonesupportissueweencounteriswithchoicesofantennas,cabling,andproperinstallation
topreventwaterfromgettinginsideRFconnectors.Understandingthetypeofantennarequiredforthe
installationiscriticaltoasuccessfulinstallation.
TheAirborneODUisdesignedeitherforuseoutdoorswitheitherit’sintegratedomnidirectional
antenna,orwithashortlength(~25feet)ofLMR400cabletotheoutside.MountingtheAirborneisas
easyusingthesuppliedrightanglemountingbracket,andthesuppliedJ‐Mount.
IftheradioisoperatedwithRFcablenotsuppliedwiththeAirbornekit,Teleticsrecommendsagood
qualityRFcablecapableof6GHzorbetteroperation,withlossesoflessthan10dBperhundredfeet.
Manyofourinstallationshaveonly3dBcablelossbetweentheAirborneandantenna.Forexample,we
havehadgreatsuccesswithLMR‐400andLMR‐400ultraflexincolderclimates,ondrillingrigsiteswith
lessthan25feetofcablebetweentheAirborneandtheoutdoorantenna.
AnothercommonfailureiscustomRFcableswithcheapconnectors,badlyinstalledconnectors,orcable
assembliesthatarenotswepttoensureproperoperationatthefrequencieswhichtheAirborne
operates.ItishighlyrecommendedthatRFcablesarepurchasedfromadistributorwiththecapability
totestthecableatthefrequencyofoperationusedwithanyTeleticsequipment.Additionally,ifthe
Airbornesystemisrentedandmoved,thatantennasandcablesbetestedagainastheequipmentis
returnedpriortobeingdispatchedtothefieldasubsequenttime.Ifyourorganizationdoesnothave
thecapabilityoftestingRFcablesat6GHz,westronglyrecommendroutinereplacementoftheRF
cablesiftheyaremovedoften.TheTUtilsoftwaresuppliedbyTeleticscanassistyourfieldstaffin
identifyingsuspectcableassemblies.
