ALWAYS wear eye protection to shield

NEVER run the engine indoors! Make

or hidden debris that could be thrown

NEVER extend trimming line beyond
the length speci ed for your unit.

practical. Keep it free of loose vegeta-

hands when cutting or trimming, and

ALWAYS disconnect the spark plug
wire before performing any main ten-
ance work.
ALWAYS, if a saw blade should bind
fast in a cut, shut off the engine imme-
diately. Push the branch or tree to ease
the bind and free the blade.

to cool before refueling. Avoid over ll-
ing and wipe off any fuel that may have

before each use. During each re ll,
check that no fuel leaks from around
the fuel cap and/or fuel tank. If fuel
leaks are evident, stop using the unit
immediately. Fuel leaks must be re-
paired before using the unit.
ALWAYS move the unit to a place well
away from a fuel storage area or other
readily ammable materials before
starting the engine.

when operating a unit
equipped with a blade.
Wear appropriate footwear (non-skid
boots or shoes): do not wear open-
toed shoes or sandals. Never work
barefooted!
Wear hearing protection devices and a
broad-brimmed hat or helmet.
Wear close-¿ tting cloth-
ing to protect legs and
arms. Gloves offer added
protection and are strongly
recommended. Do not wear
clothing or jewelry that
could get caught in
machinery or underbrush.
NEVER wear shorts!
Always wear eye
protection such as goggles or

machine.
When operating with a blade,
make sure the handle is posi-

cold weather.
Make sure bystanders or observers
outside the 50-foot “danger zone”

terrain, espe-
cially during rainy

Beware of a coasting blade
when brushcutting
or edging. A coasting blade
can injure while it continues
to spin after the throttle trig-

engine is stopped.

caution to avoid contacting such items

Be constantly alert for objects and debris that could be thrown
either from the rotating cutting attachment or bounced from a
hard surface.

Prior to Assembly
Before assembling this product, please
make sure you have all the components
required for a complete unit:
Engine assembly (Powerhead).
Outer tube assembly.
Cutting attachment shield.
Carefully inspect all components
for damage.
IMPORTANT!
The terms “left,” “left-hand,” and “LH”:
“right,” “right-hand,” and “RH”; “front” and
“rear” refer to directions as viewed by the
operator during normal operation of this
product.

1. Use the 4 mm hex wrench to loosen
the outer tube clamp screw located on
the fan cover housing on the power-
head. Use the 5 mm hex wrench to
remove the index screw from the outer
tube clamp fan cover housing.

CAUTION!
Do not to force the tube into the pow-
erhead! If installation is dif cult, slowly
rotate the outer tube or mainshaft until
you feel the mainshaft splines engage
inside the fan cover housing.
4. Rotate the shaft tube until the gearcase
output shaft faces “down,” and the
threaded index screw hole in the fan
cover tube clamp aligns with the index
hole in the shaft tube. Install and
tighten the index bolt, and then rmly
tighten the tube clamp screw.

2. Place the powerhead on a at surface,
resting on its built-in stand (spark plug
facing “up”).
3. Slide the outer tube assembly into the
powerhead until the grip on the shaft
tube touches the tube clamp.

1. Loosen the throttle lever clamp screw
A. See Figure 7.
2. Slide the throttle assembly forward
approximately 2 inches.
See Figure 7.
3. Starting from the powerhead, push the
throttle cable through the handgrip until
it appears at the throttle assembly.
4. Insert the throttle cable end into the
socket on the throttle lever and push
the cable past the retainer.
5. Push the throttle assembly back into its
original position.
6. Tighten the throttle lever clamp
screw A.

Test the throttle lever for proper “free play”
of approximately 7 mm in the idle position.
If necessary, adjustments can be made
at the carburetor by loosening the cable
locknut and then raising or lowering the
cable adjuster as required. See Figure 9.

7. Using nger pressure only, connect the
ignition wire onto the connector on the
powerhead. Secure the ground lead to
the ground lead screw . See Figure 8.

to the Outer Tube.
1. Position the handle on the outer tube
forward of Handle Positioning Label as
shown in Figure 10.
2. Install the handle and barrier bar onto
the outer tube with the socket head cap
screws and nuts as shown in Figure 10.
Tighten the screws nger-tight ONLY at
this time.
3. Locate the handle in the best position
for operator comfort (usually about 10
inches ahead of the throttle housing).
4. Secure the handle by alternately tight-
ening the four socket-head screws in a
diagonal or “crisscross” fashion.

1. Use the 4 mm hex wrench to remove
the lower cap retaining screws from the
handlebar bracket. Remove the cap
from the bracket, and note the position
of the two spacers installed between
the bracket halves.
See Figure 11.
2. Position the handle on the outer tube
forward of Handle Positioning Label as
shown in Figure 11. Reassemble the
lower cap to the handlebar bracket in
the reverse order of disassembly.
3. Locate the handle in the best position
for operator comfort.
4. Firmly tighten both lower cap retaining
screws.

CAUTION!
Overtightening the throttle body screws
can permanently damage the throttle
housing!
5. Test the throttle lever for smooth op-
eration. If any stiffness or binding are
noted, repeat Steps 1–4.
1. Unscrew the two throttle lever cover
screws, and then separate the throttle
control halves. See Figure 12.
2. Working from the powerhead, route
the cable assembly through the rub-
ber cable guide and then up through
the handlebar grip as shown. Use the
6-inch nylon tie-strap to secure the
cable assembly to the handlebar.
3. Insert the throttle cable end into the
molded receptacle in the throttle lever,
and then lay the throttle cable wire in
the molded slot in the throttle body.
Connect the two ignition switch wires
to the matching terminals in the throttle
cover.
NOTE:
The two ignition switch wires are inter-
changeable on the switch terminals.
4. In the reverse order of removal,
reassemble the throttle body on the
handlebar.

6. Test the throttle lever for proper “free

To Change Position of Line Cutter.
1. Remove the 2 hex screws with a
4 mm hex wrench. See Figure 13A.
2. Rotate line cutter. See Figure 13A.
3. Reinstall the two hex screws and
tighten them securely.
NOTE:
Be careful to not lose the 2 nuts in the cut-
ting attachment shield, they are not cap-
tured.
The line cutter can be positioned in
2 positions to obtain different line length
for cutting.

2. Fit the two shims and the bracket over
the outer tube and loosely install the
four socket-head cap screws. See

1. Position Holder A as shown and
slide it onto the gearcase shaft.
See Figure 14.
2. Install and center the safety clip on the
gearcase shaft. See Figure 14.
3. Install Holder B on the gearcase shaft.
The machined boss on Holder A must
engage with the recess on Holder B.
See Figure 14.
4. Rotate the gearshaft and holders
until the hole in Holder A aligns with
the matching hole in the gearcase
ange, and then lock the holder to the
gearcase by inserting the long end of
the hex wrench through both holes.

5. Using a counter-clockwise rotation
and hand pressure alone, thread and
securely tighten the trimmer head into
the gearcase shaft. See Figure 16.
6. Remove the hex wrench from the
gearcase and holders.

Plastic/Nylon Grass/Weed Blades
may be used where ever the nylon line
head is used. DO NOT use this blade
for heavy weeds or brush.
8 Tooth Weed/Grass Blade is de-
signed for grass, garden debris and
thick weeds. DO NOT use this blade
for brush or heavy woody growth, 19
mm diameter or larger.
80 Tooth Brush Blade is designed for
cutting brush and woody growth up to
13 mm diameter.
22 Tooth Clearing Blade is designed
for dense thickets and saplings up to
64 mm diameter.
WARNING!
Use only cutting attachments
recommended by YAMABIKO
CORPORATION.
WARNING!
The type of BLADE used MUST be
matched to the type and size of mate-
rial cut.
An improper or dull blade can cause
serious personal injury. Blades MUST
be sharp. Dull blades increase the
chance of kick-out and injury to yourself
and bystanders.

NOTE:
The C270 is shipped with Holder A, the
safety clip, Holder B, and also the shaft bolt
and bolt guard installed. The shaft bolt is a
LEFT-HAND THREAD AND IS REMOVED
BY TURNING CLOCKWISE!
With the gearcase output shaft facing
“up” and both holders removed...
1. Position Holder A as shown and slide it
onto the gearcase shaft.
2. Install the safety clip off center on the
gearcase shaft.
3. Slide the blade over the safety clip and
onto the ange on Holder A. Lock the
blade on the shaft by centering the
safety clip as shown.
4. Install Holder B on the gearcase shaft.
The machined recess in Holder B must
completely surround the safety clip,
and both holders must be at against
the surface of the blade.
5. Rotate the gearshaft and holders
until the hole in Holder A aligns with
the matching hole in the gearcase
ange. Lock the assembly by inserting
the long end of the hex wrench
through both holes. See Figure 17.
6. Install the shaft bolt and bolt guard as
shown, and then use the small end
of the spark plug wrench to securely
tighten the shaft bolt in a counter-clock-
wise direction. See Figure 18.
7. Remove the hex wrench from the
gearcase and holders.
WARNING!
Never operate the brushcutter without
the safety clip installed and both hold-
ers tightly secured and at against the
blade surface!

Mixing Fuel
WARNING!
Minimize the Risk of Fire!
STOP engine before refueling.
ALWAYS allow the engine to cool
before refueling!
Wipe all spilled fuel and move the
engine at least 10 feet (3 meters)
from the fueling point and source
before restarting!
NEVER start or operate this unit if
there is a fuel leak or the carburetor,
fuel lines, fuel tank and/or fuel cap
are damaged.
NEVER smoke or light any res near
the engine or fuel source!
NEVER place any ammable mate-
rial near the engine muf er!
NEVER operate the engine without
the muf er and spark arrester in
good working condition.
1. Place the trimmer on a at, level
surface.
2. Clear any dirt or other debris from
around the fuel ller cap.
3. Remove the fuel cap, and ll the tank
with clean, fresh fuel.
4. Reinstall the fuel ller cap and tighten
rmly.
Filling the Fuel Tank
IMPORTANT!
Mix only enough fuel for your immediate
needs! If fuel must be stored longer than
30 days and oil with fuel stabilizer
is not used, it should rst be treated with a
fuel stabilizer such as STA-BIL™.
CAUTION!
This engine is designed to operate on
a 50:1 mixture consisting of unleaded
gasoline and 2-cycle mixing oil only.
Use of non-approved mixing oils can
lead to excessive carbon deposits.
CAUTION!
Some types of gasoline contain al-
cohol as an oxygenate. Oxygenated
gasoline may cause increased op-
erating temperatures. Under certain
conditions, alcohol-based gasoline
may also reduce the lubricating
qualities of some 2-cycle mixing oils.
Never use any type of gasoline
containing more than 10% alcohol
by volume! Generic oils and some
outboard oils may not be intended
for use in high-performance 2-cycle
type engines, and should never be
used in your Shindaiwa engine.
Use only fresh, clean unleaded gaso-
line with a pump octane of 87 or higher.
Mix with 50:1 Shindaiwa Premium
2-cycle mixing oil or with an equivalent
high quality 2-cycle mixing oil.
Examples of 50:1 mixing quantities
1 gallon of gasoline to 2.6 oz. mixing
oil.
5 liters of gasoline to 100 ml. mixing oil.

Starting the Engine
5. While holding the outer tube rmly
with one hand, slowly pull the recoil
starter handle until resistance is felt,
then pull quickly to start the engine.
See Figure 22.
1. Slide the ignition switch to the “ON”
position. See Figure 19.
2. Set the throttle lever to the “fast idle”;
a. Squeeze the throttle lever toward the
handgrip on the shaft tube.
b. Depress and hold the throttle lock
button.
c. While depressing the throttle lock
button, release the throttle lever.
See Figure 19.
3. Press the primer bulb until fuel can be
seen owing in the transparent return
tube. See Figure 20.
4. Set the choke lever to the CLOSED

When the Engine Starts...
After the engine starts, allow the en-
gine to warm up at idle 2 or 3 minutes
before operating the unit.
After the engine is warm, pick
up the unit and clip on the shoulder
strap if so equipped. See page 15.
Advancing the throttle makes the cut-
ting attachment turn faster; releasing
the throttle permits the attachment to
stop turning. If the cutting attachment
continues to rotate when the engine
returns to idle, carburetor idle speed
should be adjusted (see page 14).
IMPORTANT!
If the engine fails to start after several at-
tempts with the choke in the closed posi-
tion, the engine may be ooded with fuel.
If ooding is suspected, move the choke
lever to the open position and repeatedly
pull the recoil starter to remove excess
fuel and start the engine. If the engine still
fails to start, refer to the troubleshooting
section of this manual.
6. When the engine starts, slowly move
the choke lever to the “OPEN” position.

ter the initial start, close the choke and

Adjusting Engine Idle
The engine must return to idle speed
whenever the throttle lever is released.
Idle speed is adjustable, and must be set
low enough to permit the engine clutch to
disengage the cutting attachment when
the throttle is released.
Adjustment Procedure
1. Start the engine, and then allow it to
idle 2-3 minutes until warm.
2. If the cutting attachment rotates at
engine idle, reduce idle speed by turn-
ing the idle adjustment screw counter
clockwise. See Figure 25.
3. If a tachometer is available, the engine
idle speed should be nal-adjusted to
3,000 (±250) RPM (min
-1
).
Non-Emission Compliance Engines
Initial carburetor mixture adjustments on
non-emission compliance engines are:

‘Blade thrust’ is a sudden sideways or
backward motion of the brushcutter. Such
motion may occur when the blade jams
or catches on an object such as a sapling
tree or tree stump. BE CONSTANTLY
ALERT FOR BLADE THRUST AND
GUARD AGAINST ITS EFFECTS!

A brushcutters handlebar or barrier bar
helps prevent the operator from mov-
ing forward or the unit moving rearward;
thus preventing inadvertent bodily
contact with the blade. ALWAYS KEEP
THE HANDLEBAR OR BARRIER BAR
SECURELY IN PLACE ON THE UNIT!
Brushcutter Shoulder Strap
A shoulder strap provides additional
protection against blade thrust. Plus, a
shoulder strap gives signi cant support
and comfort to help ensure safe and ef-
cient operation.
When operating a trimmer or brushcutter,
make sure both the handle and shoul-
der strap are adjusted to the size of the
operator using the unit.

A blade-equipped unit must be
equipped with a bicycle-type handle-
bar or barrier bar as well as a har-
ness or shoulder strap.
Always make sure the cutting at-

Engine Operating Speeds
Operate the unit at full throttle while cut-
ting. Best fuel ef ciency is obtained by
releasing the throttle when swinging back
after a cut.
To prevent possible engine damage, do
not allow the brushcutter to run at high
speeds without a load.
Avoid operating the engine at low
speeds. Doing so can lead to rapid
clutch wear. In addition, slow-speed op-
eration tends to cause grass and debris
to wrap around the cutting head.

Fasteners
Make sure nuts, bolts, and screws (except

Never repair a damaged blade by
welding, straightening, or by modify-
ing its shape. An altered blade may
break during operation, resulting in
serious personal injury.

Remove the cutting attachment and the
gear shaft collar, and force new grease
into the gearcase until the old grease
has been pushed out. Use only lithium-
base grease (such as Shindaiwa 13-57
Gearcase Lubricant). See Figure 34.

Use a hooked wire to extract the fuel
lter from inside the fuel tank. Remove
and replace the lter element. Before
reinstalling the lter, inspect the condi-
tion of the fuel line. If damage or dete-
rioration are noted, the 270 unit should
be removed from service until you can
consult with an authorized servicing
dealer. See Figure 35.

CAUTION!
Make sure you do not pierce the
fuel line with the end of the hooked
wire. The line is delicate and can be
damaged easily.
Hard starting or a gradual loss of perfor-
mance can be caused by carbon deposits
lodged in the muf ers spark arrester
screen.
In such cases, performance can usu-
ally be restored by removing the spark
arrester screen and giving it a thorough
cleaning with a stiff bristle brush.
If carbon deposits are severe or if no per-
formance improvement is noted, your T/C
270 should be returned to your Shindaiwa
dealer for inspection.

Long Term Storage
Whenever the unit will not be used for
30 days or longer, use the following pro-
cedures to prepare it for storage:
Clean external parts thoroughly and
apply a light coating of oil to all metal
surfaces.
Drain all the fuel from the fuel tank.
IMPORTANT!
All stored fuels should be stabilized
with a fuel stabilizer such as STA-BIL™, if
oil with fuel stabilizer is not used.
To remove the remaining fuel from the
fuel lines and carburetor and with the fuel
drained from the fuel tank.
1. Prime the primer bulb until no more fuel
is passing through.
2. Start and run the engine until stops
running.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the engine
will no longer start.
Remove the spark plug and pour about
1/4 ounce of 2-cycle mixing oil into the
cylinder through the spark plug hole.
Slowly pull the recoil starter 2 or 3
times so oil will evenly coat the interior
of the engine. Reinstall the spark plug.
Before storing the unit, repair or re-
place any worn or damaged parts.
Remove the air cleaner element from
the carburetor and clean it thoroughly
with soap and water. Let dry before
reinstalling the element.
Store the unit in a clean, dust-free area.
CAUTION!
Gasoline stored in the carburetor for
extended periods can cause hard start-
ing, and could also lead to increased
service and maintenance costs.

When the blade’s cutting edges become
slightly dull, they can be resharpened with
a few strokes of a le.
In order to keep the blade in balance, all

To sharpen the cutters on a Shindaiwa
Tornado Blade, use a 7/32-inch round le.
File the leading edge of each tooth to a
razor edge. The top plate of each tooth
should angle back 30°. See Figure 37.
