Preparation

•Evaluatetheterraintodeterminewhataccessories

•Wearappropriateclothing;includingsafety

glasses,longpants,substantial,slipresistant

footwear,gloves,andhearingprotection.

Important:Tiebacklonghair.Donotwear

jewelry.

•Inspecttheareawheretheequipmentistobe

usedandensurethatallobjectsareremovedfrom

themachinebeforeuse.

•Useextracarewhenhandlingfuels.Theyare

ammableandvaporsareexplosive.

–Useonlyanapprovedcontainer.

–Donotremovethefuelcaporaddfuelwiththe

enginerunning.Allowtheenginetocoolbefore

refueling.Donotsmokenearthemachine

whentheengineisrunning.

–Donotrefuelordrainthemachineindoors.

•Checkthattheoperator'spresencecontrols,safety

switches,andshieldsareattachedandfunctioning

properly.Donotoperatethemachineunlessthey

arefunctioningproperly.

Operation

•Lightningcancausesevereinjuryordeath.If

lightningisseen,orthunderisheardinthearea,

donotoperatethemachine;seekshelter.

•Donotoperatetheengineinaconnedspace

wheredangerouscarbonmonoxideandother

exhaustgassescancollect.

•Onlyoperateinwell-litareas,keepingawayfrom

holesandhiddenhazards.

•Ensurethatalldrivesareinneutralandthatthe

parkingbrakeisengagedbeforestartingengine.

Onlystarttheenginefromtheoperator’sposition.

•Slowdownanduseextracareonhillsides.Be

suretotravelsidetosideonhillsides.Turf

conditionscanaffectthestabilityofthemachine.

Usecautionwhileoperatingneardrop-offs.

•Slowdownandusecautionwhenmakingturns

andwhenchangingdirectionsonslopes.

•Donotraisethemowerdeckwiththeblades

running.

•DonotoperatethemachinewithoutthePTO

shieldorotherguardssecurelyinplace.Besure

allinterlocksareattached,adjustedproperly,and

functioningproperly.

•Donotoperatewiththedischargedeectorraised,

removedoraltered,unlessusingagrasscatcher.

•Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingor

overspeedtheengine.

•Stoponlevelground,disengagedrives,engage

theparkingbrake(ifprovided),shutoffthe

enginebeforeleavingtheoperator'spositionfor

anyreason,includingemptyingthecatchersor

uncloggingthechute.

•Stopequipmentandinspectthebladesafter

strikingobjectsorifanabnormalvibrationoccurs.

Makethenecessaryrepairsbeforeresuming

operations.

•Keepyourhandsandfeetawayfromthecutting

unit.

•Lookbehindanddownbeforebackingupto

ensureaclearpath.

•Keeppetsandbystandersawayfromanoperating

machine.

•Slowdownandusecautionwhenmakingturns

andcrossingroadsandsidewalks.Stopthe

bladesifyouarenotmowing.

•Beawareofthemower-dischargedirectionand

SafeHandlingofFuels

•Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamage,use

extremecareinhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis

extremelyammableandthevaporsareexplosive.

•Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andother

sourcesofignition.

•Useonlyanapprovedfuelcontainer.

•Donotremovethefuelcaporaddfuelwiththe

enginerunning.

•Allowtheenginetocoolbeforefueling.

•Donotfuelthemachineindoors.

•Donotstorethemachineorfuelcontainerwhere

thereisanopename,spark,orpilotlightsuchas

onawaterheateroronotherappliances.

•Donotllcontainersinsideavehicle,onatruck,

oronatrailerbedwithaplasticliner.Alwaysplace

containersonthegroundawayfromyourvehicle

beforelling.

•Removeequipmentfromthetruckortrailerand

fuelitontheground.Ifthisisnotpossible,

thenaddfuelwithsuchequipmentasaportable

container,ratherthanfromafueldispensernozzle.

•Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefuel

tankorcontaineropeningatalltimesuntilfueling

iscomplete.Donotuseanozzlelockopendevice.

•Iffuelisspilledonclothing,changeyourclothing

immediately.

•Donotoverllfueltank.Replacefuelcapand

tightensecurely.

MaintenanceandStorage

•Disengagedrives,settheparkingbrake,stop

theengine,andremovethekeyordisconnect

spark-plugwire.Waitforallmovementtostop

beforeadjusting,cleaning,orrepairing.

•Cleangrassanddebrisfromthecuttingunit,

drives,mufers,andenginetohelppreventres.

•Cleanupoilorfuelspillage.

•Lettheenginecoolbeforestoring.

•Donotstorefuelnearamesordrainindoors.

•Donotallowuntrainedpersonneltoservice

machine.

•Usejackstandstosupportcomponentswhen

required.

•Carefullyreleasepressurefromcomponentswith

storedenergy.

•Disconnectthebatteryorremovethespark-plug

wirebeforemakinganyrepairs.Disconnectthe

negativeterminalrstandthepositiveterminal

last.Reconnectthepositiverstandnegativelast.

•Usecarewhencheckingtheblades.Wrapthe

blade(s)orwearthickly-paddedgloves,anduse

cautionwhenservicingthem.Onlyreplaceblades;

donotstraightenorweldthem.

•Keephandsandfeetawayfrommovingparts.If

possible,donotmakeadjustmentswiththeengine

running.

•Keepallpartsingoodworkingconditionandall

hardwaretightened.Replaceallwornordamaged

decals.

Hauling

•Usecarewhenloadingorunloadingthemachine

intoatraileroratruck.

•Usefull-widthrampsforloadingmachineintoa

traileroratruck.

•Tiethemachinedownsecurelyusingstraps,

chains,cable,orropes.Bothfrontandrearstraps

shouldbedirecteddownandoutwardfromthe

machine.

ThrottleControl

ThethrottlecontrolisvariablebetweenFASTand

SLOW.Movingthethrottleleverforwardwillincrease

enginespeedandmovingthethrottlelevertotherear

willdecreasetheenginespeed(Figure5).

Blade-ControlSwitch(Power

Take-off)

Theblade-controlswitch,(PTO),engagesand

disengagespowertothemowerblades(Figure5).

Fuel-PresenceWindow

Thefuelwindowlocatedontheleft-handsideof

themachine,canbeusedtoverifythepresenceof

gasolineinthetank(Figure6).

Height-of-CutLever

Theheight-of-cutleverallowsyoutolowerandraise

thedeckfromtheseatedposition.Whenyouraisethe

lever(towardyou),thedeckisraisedfromtheground,

andwhenyoulowerit(awayfromyou),itlowersto

theground.Adjusttheheight-of-cutonlywhilethe

machineisnotmoving(Figure14).

KeyChoice

Switch

Thisswitchallowsyoutomowinreversewhenitis

activated.T oactivateit,turntheswitchtoonand

releaseitafterthePTOisengaged.T odeactivateit,

disengagethepowertake-off(PTO)(Figure6).

Light

TheOperating–in–Reversewarninglightwillilluminate

whenevertheKeyChoicekeyisusedtodeactivatethe

operating–in–reverseinterlock.Itisareminderthat

theinterlocksystemisdeactivated.Thelightgoesout

wheneverthePTOisdisengagedortheengineisshut

off.Whenthelightison,lookbehindanduseextra

cautionwhenbackingup.

SmartPark

™

Switch

Theparkingbrakeisactivatedelectronically.

Engagetheparkingbrakebyoneofthefollowing

actions:

•PressingtheSmartPark

™

switchtotheONposition

(Figure5).

•Theparkingbrakeengagesautomaticallywhen

theoperatorleavestheseatandthetraction

controlpedalisintheNEUTRALposition.

•Theparkingbrakeautomaticallyengages5to6

secondsaftertheignitionswitchisturnedtothe

OFFposition(ifnotalreadyengaged).

Todisengagetheparkingbrake,presstheSmartpark

switchtotheOFFpositionwiththekeyintheRUN

position.

machinefromthenormaloperatingposition.

AddingFuel

•Forbestresults,useonlyclean,fresh(lessthan

30daysold),unleadedgasolinewithanoctane

ratingof87orhigher((R+M)/2ratingmethod).

•Ethanol:Gasolinewithupto10%ethanol

(gasohol)or15%MTBE(methyltertiarybutyl

ether)byvolumeisacceptable.Ethanoland

MTBEarenotthesame.Gasolinewith15%

ethanol(E15)byvolumeisnotapprovedforuse.

Neverusegasolinethatcontainsmorethan

10%ethanolbyvolume,suchasE15(contains

15%ethanol),E20(contains20%ethanol),orE85

(containsupto85%ethanol).Usingunapproved

gasolinemaycauseperformanceproblemsand/or

enginedamagewhichmaynotbecoveredunder

warranty.

•Donotusegasolinecontainingmethanol.

•Donotstorefueleitherinthefueltankorfuel

containersoverthewinterunlessafuelstabilizer

isused.

•Donotaddoiltogasoline.

DANGER

Incertainconditions,gasolineisextremely

ammableandhighlyexplosive.Areor

explosionfromgasolinecanburnyouand

othersandcandamageproperty.

•Fillthefueltankoutdoors,inanopenarea,

whentheengineiscold.Wipeupany

to13mm(1/4to1/2inch)belowthebottom

•Neversmokewhenhandlinggasoline,and

stayawayfromanopenameorwhere

gasolinefumesmaybeignitedbyaspark.

•Storegasolineinanapprovedcontainer

andkeepitoutofthereachofchildren.

Neverbuymorethana30-daysupplyof

gasoline.

•Donotoperatewithoutentireexhaust

systeminplaceandinproperworking

condition.

DANGER

Incertainconditionsduringfueling,static

electricitycanbereleased,causingaspark

thatcanignitethegasolinevapors.Areor

explosionfromgasolinecanburnyouand

othersandcandamageproperty.

•Alwaysplacegasolinecontainersonthe

groundawayfromyourvehiclebefore

•Donotllgasolinecontainersinsidea

vehicleoronatruckortrailerbed,because

interiorcarpetsorplastictruckbedliners

mayinsulatethecontainerandslowthe

lossofanystaticcharge.

•Whenpractical,removegas-powered

equipmentfromthetruckortrailerand

refueltheequipmentwithitswheelsonthe

ground.

•Ifthisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuch

equipmentonatruckortrailerfroma

portablecontainerratherthanfroma

gasoline-dispensernozzle.

•Ifyoumustuseagasoline-dispenser

nozzle,keepthenozzleincontactwiththe

rimofthefueltankorcontaineropeningat

alltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.

WARNING

Gasolineisharmfulorfatalifswallowed.

Long-termexposuretovaporscancause

seriousinjuryandillness.

•Avoidprolongedbreathingofvapors.

•Keepfaceawayfromnozzleandgastank

orconditionerbottleopening.

•Avoidcontactwithskin;washoffspills

withsoapandwater.

UsingStabilizer/Conditioner

Useafuelstabilizer/conditionerinthemachineto

providethefollowingbenets:

•Keepsgasolinefreshduringstorageof90daysor

less.Forlongerstorageitisrecommendedthat

thefueltankbedrained.

•Cleanstheenginewhileitruns

•Eliminatesgum-likevarnishbuildupinthefuel

system,whichcauseshardstarting

Important:Donotusefueladditives

containingmethanolorethanol.

Addthecorrectamountofgasoline

stabilizer/conditionertothegasoline.

Note:Afuelstabilizer/conditionerismosteffective

whenmixedwithfreshgasoline.Tominimizethe

chanceofvarnishdepositsinthefuelsystem,use

fuelstabilizeratalltimes.

FillingtheFuelTank

Note:Ensurethattheengineisshutoffandthe

motioncontrolsareintheparkedposition.

Note:Youcanusethefuelwindowtoverifythe

presenceofgasolinebeforellingthetank(Figure7).

Important:Donotoverllfueltank.Fillthefuel

tanktothebottomofthellerneck.Theempty

spaceinthetankallowsthefueltoexpand.

TestingtheSafety-Interlock

System

1.Sitintheseatwiththeengineoffandensure

thatthePTOswitchisintheOFFposition.

2.TurntheignitionkeytotheSTARTposition;the

startershouldcrank.Donotstarttheengineor

turntheengineoffpriortostep3.

3.TurnthekeytotheONpositionandpushthe

SmartParkswitchtotheOFFposition.Thebrake

shoulddisengageandthebrakelightshould

turnoff.

4.Withthebrakedisengagedandtractionpedal

intheNEUTRALposition,turntheignitionswitch

totheSTARTposition.Thebrakeshould

automaticallyengage,theengineshouldcrank,

andthebrakelightwillturnon.

5.WiththeengineoffandthekeyintheON

position,engagethePTObypullingupthe

blade-controlswitch,youshouldheartheclutch

engage.

6.Ensurethatthetractionpedalisinneutraland

turntheignitionswitchtotheSTARTposition.The

PTOshoulddisengageandtheengineshould

crankandstartwithoutthebladesmoving.
