About This Book

Palm™ Web Pro is your Palm™ handheld’s gateway to the web. The Palm™ Web

Pro Handbook can help you learn to use Web Pro to visit web pages. Later, you can

use this handbook as a reference for less common tasks, such as changing your

home page.

The Palm™ Web Pro Handbook is based on the following assumptions:

■ You know how to use the basic functions of your handheld, such as the basic

applications and HotSync

technology.

■ You know how to enter text and select onscreen items using the available

controls on your handheld, such as a built-in keyboard, an Input Area, an icon

area, or a navigator button.

■ You have all the elements you need to connect to the Internet. For example, you

may need a data-enabled phone, an Internet service provider, and so on.

■ You know how to configure your handheld to connect to the Internet.

■ You are using Web Pro 3.0 (or 3.0.x). For information about which Palm

handhelds support Web Pro 3.0 (or 3.0.x), see “Handheld system requirements”

in Chapter 2.

About This Book

Introducing Palm

™

Web Pro

Palm™ Web Pro gives you access to the Internet on your Palm™ handheld.

Ease of use

Web Pro is easy to use because it works much like the web browsers you use on

your desktop computer. You can enter Uniform Resource Locators (URLs, also

called web addresses), create bookmarks to mark favorite pages, save pages for

offline viewing later, and even download files directly to your handheld. You can

also use Web Pro to view certain kinds of files, such as popular graphics file

formats, that are attached to e-mail messages or stored on your handheld or on an

expansion card.

More importantly, Web Pro is designed to be used on the small screen of your

handheld. It forces images to fit the handheld’s screen, it does not clutter your

screen with fancy icons, and it handles technical features (like caching and cookies)

with minimal input from you.

Efficiency

Web Pro keeps a History List of pages you have visited and lets you set an option

to view old content if it is available. When you view a page from the History

List with this option set, Web Pro displays that page from memory rather than

downloading it again and it informs you that you are viewing a stored version of

the page. You’re given the choice of viewing a stored version or connecting to the

Internet to refresh the page. You can also choose to manually confirm every

connection you make to the Internet.

Security

Web Pro uses advanced encryption technology from Certicom. Encryption makes

your data unreadable by anyone but the intended recipient.

This encryption technology is used to secure the transmission of sensitive

information, such as credit card numbers, e-mail messages, and passwords.

Data is protected both when sent from your handheld over the network and when

coming in from the Internet directly to your handheld. For more information about

When you view a page that contains encrypted data, a padlock icon appears in the

upper-left corner of the page and indicates that your data is secure.

It’s not unusual to experience an additional delay of several seconds when a

transaction is being encrypted.

What Web Pro looks like

The Web Pro screen has four parts:

■ The title bar displays the name of the current web page or shows the status of

actions, such as “Requesting...”, “Receiving...”, “Formatting...”, and so forth.

■ The action icons enable you to navigate in the browser, to refresh pages, and to

bookmark pages.

■ The URL Entry field enables you to quickly enter web page addresses.

■ The rest of the screen displays the content of the web page.

You can perform other actions by tapping items in menus. Like in other Palm OS

applications, when you select the title bar, it is replaced by the menu bar.

Getting help in Web Pro

Help is available in the following locations:

■ Tap the Menu icon and select Web Pro help in the Options menu for

information about Web Pro.

■ Most dialog boxes in Web Pro have help about the options in the dialog box. To

see that information, tap the Tips icon .

■ For help with drawing Graffiti

2 characters, tap the Menu icon , tap Edit,

and then tap Graffiti 2 Help.

NOTE

Graffiti 2 Help may not apply to your handheld; some handhelds do not

support Graffiti 2 writing.

Web Pro Requirements

Some handhelds come with Web Pro 3.0 (or 3.0.x) already installed; you open it just

as you open any other application on your handheld. If you are upgrading from an

earlier version of Web Pro, review the following system requirements. Then, refer

to the documentation you received with your handheld for information about

installing additional applications.

Handheld

system requirements

To use Web Pro 3.0 (or 3.0.x), your handheld must have the following:

■ Palm OS

software version 5.0 or later

■ 16 megabytes (MB) of total RAM with 2.5 MB of free RAM available

■ A way to connect to the Internet. For example, one of the following:

– A radio built into your handheld

– A wireless connection made through peripheral hardware attached to

your handheld

– A connection using a cell phone and appropriate software

– A modem for your handheld

NOTE Web Pro 3.0 (or 3.0.x) is not supported on the following Palm™ handhelds:

Palm™ m100 series handhelds, Palm™ m500 series handhelds, Palm™ i700 series

handhelds, Zire™ handhelds, and Tungsten™ W handhelds.

To find the Palm OS version number:

1. Go to the Palm applications Home screen.

2. Open the menus.

3. Tap Info from the App menu.

4. Tap Version.

To find the amount of RAM:

1. Go to the Palm applications Home screen.

2. Open the menus.

3. Tap Info from the App menu.

4. Tap Size.

In the line beginning “Free Space” are two numbers. The second number is

the total amount of RAM available on your handheld. The first number is the

amount of free RAM available. If the first number can be rounded up to 2.5 MB

or more, your handheld has enough RAM to support Web Pro.

Uninstalling Web Pro

Web Pro is easy to uninstall from your handheld.

NOTE

Some handhelds have Web Pro already installed on the handheld. You cannot

uninstall Web Pro because it is an integral part of the handheld software.

To uninstall Web Pro:

1. Go to the Palm applications Home screen.

2. Open the menus.

3. Tap Delete from the App menu.

4. Tap Web Pro.

5. Tap Delete.

A confirmation dialog box appears.

6. Tap Yes.

7. If a dialog box appears, asking you to reset your handheld, tap Reset.

IMPORTANT

Uninstalling Web Pro also removes your bookmarks, saved pages, and

browsing history.

Browsing the Web on Your Handheld

Like the web browser you use on your desktop computer, Palm™ Web Pro enables

you to browse the web in several ways:

■ Visit a web page by entering its URL.

■ Visit another web page by tapping a link.

■ Go back to the pages you have already visited by using the Back and

Forward icons.

■ View web pages stored offline on your handheld or on an expansion card.

Opening Web Pro

Web Pro works just like any other application on your handheld.

To open Web Pro:

1. Go to the Palm applications Home screen.

2. Select All in the Category pick list in the upper-right corner of the screen.

3. Tap the Web Pro icon .

Web Pro may take a moment to load the first page.

IMPORTANT If you are in another application, such as Palm™ VersaMail™, you can

tap on a URL and Web Pro automatically opens and connects to the Internet to display

the page. Depending on your preference, Web Pro also opens when you click on a

supported file type (.gif, .jpg, or .html) received as an attachment in VersaMail.

NOTE The rest of the instructions in this handbook assume that you’re already

running Web Pro and that you’ve successfully connected to the Internet.

Disconnecting from and connecting to the Internet

If you are using GPRS service, you are only charged for the data sent. If you are

using a GSM service, you are charged for the time you are connected. While you’re

working with stored information in Web Pro, such as saved pages, stored versions

of pages, and so forth, you can disconnect from the Internet in order to reduce

usage charges. You can connect to the Internet again when you need access again.

To disconnect from the Internet:

1. Tap the Menu icon .

2. Tap Disconnect in the Page menu.

To connect to the Internet:

1. Tap the Menu icon .

2. Select Connect in the Page menu.

The Service Connection Progress dialog opens.

3. If the connection is not established, do one of the following:

– Tap Cancel to stop the connection process.

– Tap Change Network to select a different service to connect to.

Visiting a web page

You can visit web pages by using the Open URL dialog box or the URL Entry field.

To visit a web page by using the Open URL dialog box:

1. Tap the Open URL icon .

2. Enter the URL of the web page you want to visit.

The field in the Open URL dialog box already contains the characters “www.”

If the web address you want to enter starts with another set of letters, just drag

over the “www.” and backspace to delete them.

Tap buttons to enter other characters commonly used in web addresses.

Tap the Previously Viewed pick list to select a URL from a list of web sites that

you recently visited. The URL is entered and, if necessary, you can modify the

URL.

3. Tap Go.

During the short delay while the new page is being downloaded, the title bar

displays information about the download process.

To visit a web page by using the URL Entry field:

1. Tap the URL Entry field at the top of the screen.

2. Enter the URL in the field.

3. Tap Go, or press Enter if your handheld includes a navigator.

TIP

If autofill is enabled, you can enter just the first few letters of a URL that you’ve

entered before in the URL Entry field, and Web Pro completes the URL for you. For

more information on autofill, see “Enabling or disabling autofill” in Chapter 9.

If the web page is larger than your screen, you can tap and drag the stylus to move

the web page in any direction to view different parts of the web page.

NOTE

Due to the ability to tap and drag pages to view other parts of a page, you

must tap and hold, then drag to select text when copying from a page.

Following a link

Many web pages contain links, which are text or pictures that, when clicked, take

you to another web page or to another part of the same page. Like many other web

browsers, Web Pro highlights these links by underlining them.

To follow a link:

■ Tap the link.

NOTE

You can use Navigator to quickly access links. Press Select to highlight a link

on a page. Once a link is highlighted, use the Up and Down buttons to go to the

previous or next link on the page. Once a link is highlighted, press Select to follow

the highlighted link.

Returning to a web page you just visited

To go back to the last web page you visited:

■ Tap the Back icon .

To go back to an earlier page:

■ Tap the Back icon until you return to the page you want.

The list of visited pages (which is limited by your handheld’s memory) is called

the cache. See “Viewing a cached page” in Chapter 8 for more information on the

cache.

To go forward through the cached pages:

■ Tap the Forward icon .

Links

Returning to your home page

No matter where you navigate on the Internet, you can always return to your home

page quickly and easily.

To return to your home page:

■ Tap the Home Page icon in the Web Pro action bar .

If you want a different web page to be your home page, see “Changing your start

and home page” in Chapter 9.

Downloading a file to your handheld

Web Pro can download any type of file for which your handheld provides native

support, which means that your handheld contains an application that enables you

to open and view the file in its original format. (Some handheld applications allow

you to view files only after you perform a HotSync

operation, during which the

file is converted from its original format to different format. Web Pro does not

download files that are supported only in this way.) For example, if your handheld

contains an application that lets you open PDF documents without format

conversion required on the desktop computer, you will be able to download PDF

files with Web Pro.

Popular file types that Web Pro can download (when native support is present on

your handheld) include applications (.prc) and databases (.pdb) for Palm OS

software, as well as documents (.doc, .txt, and .pdf), images (.jpg and .gif), and

music files.

Downloading a file is much like visiting a web page.

NOTE

You can download a file to an SD card even if the file type does not have native

supported on your handheld.

To download a file by following a link from a web page:

1. Tap the link.

The Download dialog box appears, asking you to confirm the file you want to

download.

If you want to download to an expansion card, select the Download to card

check box.

2. If the file is the one you want, tap Save.

A message appears showing you the progress of the download. When the file

download is complete, a message appears.

3. Tap OK .

Stopping the download process

If you decide that the download process is taking too long, you can stop it.

To stop a web page from downloading:

■ Tap the Stop icon in the Web Pro action bar.

To stop a file from downloading:

■ Tap Cancel in the Download dialog box.

You can make changes to improve the download speed, such as not downloading

images that appear on web pages. See “Changing page characteristics” in

Chapter 9.

Refreshing a page

Some web pages, such as news sites, change frequently. If you visit a page and

spend several minutes reading an article, the web site may change during that

time. To make sure you have the latest content, refresh the page.

To refresh a page:

■ Tap the Refresh icon .

You can also view old content instead of accessing the Internet. See Chapter 7.

Viewing information about a web page

Because of the limited space on the handheld screen, sometimes the current web

address (URL) is not fully viewable. To find the full URL, name, and size of the

current web page, open the Web Page Info dialog box.

To view information about the current web page:

1. Open the menus.

2. Tap Page Info from the Page menu.

3. Tap OK .

Using passwords

Some web sites require that you use a password to gain access to information.

Passwords in Web Pro work in a slightly different way from those in typical

desktop browsers.

To enter a password:

1. Open the web page where you must enter the password. The password field

contains the word “Unassigned.”

2. Enter your sign-in name in the appropriate field.

3. Enter your password in the appropriate field and tap OK.

The password field now contains asterisks indicating the password has been

entered.

4. Tap the sign-in button (Enter, Go, and so forth) on the web page to gain access

to the password-protected information.

Disconnecting from and connecting to the Internet

While you’re working with stored information in Web Pro, such as saved pages,

stored versions of pages, and so forth, you can disconnect from the Internet to reduce

usage charges. You can connect to the Internet again when you need access again.

To disconnect from the Internet:

1. Open the menus.

2. Tap Disconnect from the Page menu.

To connect to the Internet:

■ Do one of the following:

– Open the menus, and then tap Connect from the Page menu.

– If Web Pro is open: Enter a URL, and then tap Go.

Web Pro automatically initiates an Internet connection.
