Services
NovellArchiveandVersionServicesonOES11SP2capturesandstoresperiodicversionsofyour
networkfilesinanarchivedatabase.Asyouwork,thearchiveservertransparentlysavesversionsof
yournetworkfilesthatyoucreate,modify,ordeleteduringascheduledinterval.Ifyourenameor
deletea
directoryorfile,thencreateanotheronewiththesamename,thearchiveserver
distinguishesthoseinstancesandmaintainssetsoftherelatedversions.
ArchiveandVersionServicesfreestheadministratortofocusonothercriticalITissues.Youcanview
alistofversionsofthesourcefiles,select
therequiredfile,thenrecoverit.Youcanaccessfileversions
fromanywhere,atanytime,usingaWebbrowserandanactivenetworkorInternetconnection
withoutthehelpofyouradministrator.

Mostenterprisesrelyonyourbestpracticesandpersonalhabitstoprotectyourindividualfiles
betweenbackups.Standardbackupprocedurescapturenetworkfilesperiodicallytoprevent
catastrophicloss.However,backupsdonottrackmodifications,renaming,anddeletionsyoumake
tofilesinbetweenbackups.Youmightemploydifferenttechniquestoensure
thatyoudonotlose
criticalfiles.Forexample,youmightsavemultipleversionsofafileunderdifferentnamesasyou
modifyitovertime.Youmightsavethefileindifferentlocations.Youmightdoboth.
Despiteprecautions,almosteveryuserhasaccidentallymodified,lost,ordeleteda
keyfile.When
problemsoccur,youareleftwithtwochoices:
Waitfortheadministratortorecoverthefilefrombackupmedia, ifthefilewasbackedupatall.
Painstakinglyrebuildthefilefromdraftversionsorfromscratch.
File Recovery and Restoration Efforts Waste Resources
Wheneveryouloseafile,youandyourcompanylosethetimeandresourcesinvestedincreatingthe
datainit.Bothfilerecoveryandreconstructioneffortswastevaluableresources:
It’sinefficient.Youcannotaccess backupfileswithoutadministratoraction.

System-Level Backup and Recovery Measures Are Not Enough
Mostenterprisesimplementsometypeofsystemleveldatabackupandrecoverytopreventagainst
majordatalosses.Backupsoccurperiodicallytopreventcatastrophiclossesofdata.Often,thefiles
youlosehavealifecycleshorterthanthemajorbackupcycles.Untilnow,thesedatalosseshavebeen
anunfortunate
costofdoingbusiness.
Recoveryofasinglefileisnotasimpleprocess.Onlytheadministratorcanaccessthebackupmedia
toretrieveandrecoverthefile.Youmustknowexactlywhenthefileexistedsothattheadministrator
canfindtherightversionofthefile.
Evenafterthe
fileisrecovered,youmustupdatethefilewithchangesmadebetweenthetimeitwas
backedupuntilthetimeitwasmodified,deleted,orlost.

NovellArchiveandVersionServicesoffersmany

Theversioningprocessistransparentuntilyouneedtorestoreapreviousversionofafile.
Versioningdoesnotaffecthowapplicationsbehaveandrequiresnoactiononyourpart.
Allsecurityfeaturesandpermissionsareineffectforthefileversions.

YouradministratorconfiguresandmanagestheNovellArchiveandVersionServicesforfilesstored
onNovellStorageServices(NSS)volumesonaOES11SP2server.Totakeadvantageofthisservice,it
isimportanttounderstandseveralkeyconcepts.
File Versions
Fileversionsarepointintimecopiesofnetworkfilesthatresideinanarchivedatabase.Your
networkadministratordetermineswhichfiletypesareeligibleforversioningandhowfrequently
versioningoccursforeachdatavolume.Eligiblefilesthatchangeduringanintervaloftime,calledan
epoch,areversioned
attheendoftheinterval.Nomatterhowmanychangesyoumaketoyourfiles

duringanepoch,onlythoseeligiblefilesthatexistattheendoftheepochareversionedandstoredin
thearchivedatabase.Metadatachangesforeligiblefilesarealsonotedinthedatabase.Fileversions
resideinthearchivedatabaseuntiltheyaremanuallydeletedoruntiltheymeetcriteria
forautomatic
deletion.
NOTE:Filenamewithaspecialcharactercolon(:)isnoteligibleforversioning.
Versioning Schedule
Yoursys tem administratorestablishesaversioningschedulethatmeetsuserrequirementsforfile
versioning,givenlimitedstorageandbandwidthresources.
Archive Database
Fileversionsresideinthearchivedatabaseonthearchiveserver.Youcanretrievefileversionsfrom
thearchivedatabaseatanytime,fromanywhere,usingtheArchivefunctioninNovellNetStorage.
YoucanalsousetheNSSFileVersionUtilityonyourWindows2000/XP/VistaorSUSELinux
Enterprise
Desktop(SLED)10orSLED10SP1workstationtoretrievefilesfromthearchivedatabase.
Forsecurityreasons,therestoredfileordirectoryanditscontentareassignedtheirmostrecent
settingsforfilesystema ttributes,trustees,andtrusteerightstoyourOES11SP2NSSvolume.
File Eligibility Policy
Youradministratorsetscriteriatodeterminewhichfilesareeligibleforversioning.Filescanbe
includedorexcludedaccordingtotheirpath,fileextension,orfilenamepatterns.Ifyourfilesmeet
theresultantcriteria,theyareeligibleforversioning.Youdonothavedirectcontroloverwhichof
yourfilesare
versioned,whentheversioningoccurs,orwhatthestateofyourfilesiswhentheepoch
endsandthefileversionsarecopiedtothearchivedatabase.Workwithyouradministratorto
establishyourversioningneeds.
Version Delete Policy
Theadministratorcontrolshowlongfileversionsarekeptandhowmanyfileversionscanexistata
time.Versionedfilesmighthavealimitedlifetimeinthearchive.Thedeletepolicyforvolumescan
beconfiguredtoallowindefiniteretentionofatleastonemostrecentfileversion.Workwith
your
administratortoestablishyourfileretentionneeds.
Versioning Policy
Administratorsetstheversioningcriteria likefilestobeversioned,whenversioningoccurs,orthe
stateofthefileswhentheepochends,filters,deletepolicyforallthefilesonaparticularvolume.All
thisinformationisdisplayedintheVe rsioning Policy ,RightclicktheArchiveiconinthesystem
tray
andselectViewVersioningPolicytoviewthedetails.
NSS File Version Utility for File or Directory Retrieval and Restoration
TheNSSFileVersionUtilityprovidesconvenientanddirectaccesstoarchivedversionsofyourfiles
usingeitherWindowsorLinuxdesktop.RestoreArchivedVersionsoptionisavailablewhenyouright
clickafileordirectoryintheexplorer.Theutilityallowsyoutoviewrecentversionsofyourfilesin
thearchivedatabaseandrestorethedesiredfile.

NovellNetStorageprovidesWebbasedaccesstoarchivedversionsofyourfilesusingawebbrowser

configureNovellArchiveandVersionServices.Thissectionexplainshowyouradministratorcan

onaOES11SP2serverwhereyourdataisstored.
Youradministratorsetscriteriatodeterminewhich
filesareeligibleforversioning,suchasby
pathorfileextension.Ifyourfilesmeetthecriteria,theyareeligibleforversioning.
Versioningoccursforeligiblefilesatscheduledintervals,calledepochs.Youradministratorcan
alsomanuallypauseversioningjobsandrunjobsondemand.
Afile’slifetime mustspan
theendofoneepochtobeversioned.Onlyfilesthatexistwhenthe
versioningoccursareversioned.Ifyoucreateanddeleteafilewithintheepoch,itcannotbe
versioned.
Itdoesnotmatterhowmuchorhowoftenyouchangeaneligiblefileduringaepoch.The
versioningprocesscapturesthefileinwhateverstateitisinattheendoftheepoch.Youdonot
havedirectcontroloverwhichofyourfilesareversioned,whentheversioningoccurs,orwhat
thestateofyourfilesiswhentheepochendsandthefileversions
arecopiedtothearchive
database.
Versionedfilestypicallyhavealimitedlifetimeinthearchive.Theadministratorconfiguresa
deletepolicythatsetsthemaximumkeeptimeandthemaximumnumberofversionstoretain.
Thedeletepolicyforvolumescanbeconfiguredtoallowindefiniteretentionofat
leastonemost
recentfileversion.
TousetheNSSFileVersionUtility,youmustdownloadtheexecutablefromtheWelcomepage
andinstallonyourWindowsorSLEDdesktop.
ToaccessversionsusingNovellNetStorage,youradministratormustinstallandconfigurea
NovellNetStorageserver,thenconfigureNetStorageservices
toaccessArchiveservice.

File’s Lifetime Does Not Span the End of an Epoch
Afileisversionedonlyifitslifetimespansthe endofanepoch.Ifyoucreateafileafteranepoch
begins,anddeleteitbeforetheendoftheepoch,thefilecannotbeversioned.Afile’sversionmight
notbeavailableifitsscheduledversioningprocessesispaused
ordelayedforaperiodoftimethat
exceededthelifetimeofthefile.Althoughthefrequencyoftheepochusuallyislessthanthetypical
lifetimeofyourfiles,theremightbeoccasionswhentheversioningtimeisextended.Forexample,if
thetimeittakestosaveversions
ofallthefileseligibleforversioningexceedsthescheduleepoch
timeinterval,somescheduledepochsmightbeskippeduntilthecurrentprocessendsandthenext
scheduledstarttimeoccurs.
File Is Open During the Versioning Process
Ifafileisopenduringtheversioningprocess,acopyofthefilecannotbesavedtothearchive
database.InOES11SP2,youradministratorhastheoptionofusingNSSpoolsnapshot technology
duringtheversioningprocesstosavepointintimecopiesofbothclosedandopen
files.Ifsnapshot
technologyisnotused,thefilesthatareeligibleforversioningarecopieddirectlyfromthesource
volume.Inthiscase,exclusivelyopenfilescannotbeversioned.
File Is Deleted before A Version Is Saved
Ifyourfileexistsattheendofanepoch,butyoudeleteitbeforeitcanbecopiedtothearchive
database,thatfileversionisnotsavedtothearchivedatabase.
File Version Exceeded Retention Thresholds
Typically ,thefile’sarchivedversionsaredeletedaut omaticallyfromthearchivedatabaseasthey
exceedthemaximumtimetokeepversionsorthemaximumnumberofversionspermitted,as
configuredbytheadministrator.

Option Description
Server Name The OES 11 SP2server where the data to be versioned is located.
Volume Name The OES 11 SP2 NSS volume where the data to be versioned is located.
Job Status The current operational state of the job.
Scheduled: The job is scheduled to save file versions; currently it is not active.
Running: The job is saving file versions to the archive database.
Stopped: The archived data is available to you, but the job is disabled and no
new versions are captured.
Cleanup: The Clean Up Users job is in progress. The job removes obsolete
user information.
