Preparation of the Electrode for Initial Use
1. Removetheprotectivebottleorcoverfromtheelectrodeand
thoroughlyrinsetheelectrodewithdistilledwater.Wipecarefullywith
acleanlabwipe.
2. Duringshipment,airbubblesmayhavemigratedintotheelectrode
sensingbulb.Holdtheelectrodeuptothelightandinspectthe
sensingbulbforairbubbles.Ifairisseen,carefullyshakethe
electrodedownward(likeathermometer)todispelanyairbubble
fromthesensingbulbatthetipoftheelectrode.
In-Line Standardizing the Electrode with Controller
1. ConnectyourpHelectrodetotheinputconnectoronthepH
controller.EnsurethattheelectrodeBNCandsolutionreference
connectionsaresecure.
2. Installtheelectrodeinthesamplelineandturnowon.Thetipof
theelectrodemustbepointeddownnomorethan40°fromvertical.
Wait2-3minutes.
3. Whilethereadingisstabilizingnavigatetothecontroller’spH
calibrationmenuandresettofactorydefaultsifavailable.
4. IfthepHreadingisstableandwithin1-2pHofyourtestedknown
valueforthesolutionperforma1pointcalibrationtomatchcontroller
andelectrodetotestedvalue.
Standardizing the Electrode to Solutions
1. ConnectyourpHelectrodetotheinputconnectoronthepH
controller.EnsurethattheelectrodeBNCissecure.
2. PlacetheelectrodeintoabeakercontainingpH7.00bufferandstir.
Whilereadingisstabilizingnavigatetothe2PointCalibrationmenu
ofcontroller,ifavailable.
3. Whenthereadingisstable,adjustthecontrollertoreadthevalueof
thepH7.00bufferforthelowcalibrationpoint.
4. Removetheelectrodefromthebuffer7.Rinsewithdistilledwater
andblotwithalabwipe.
5. Placetheelectrodeinabeakercontainingthebuffer10andrepeat
step3calibratingthehighcalibrationpoint.
Storing the Electrode
Short Term
Betweenmeasurements,storethepHelectrodeinabeakercontaining
pH4.0buffer.
Long Term
Whenstoringforlongerperiods,storethepHelectrodeinthestorage
bottleortheprotectivebootwhichcamewiththeelectrode.Ensurethat
thefoaminthestoragebottleorthecottonballintheprotectivebootis
totallywettedwithDlwatertokeepamoistenvironmentaroundthepH
bulbandjunction.Maintainthemoistenvironmentinthestoragebottleor
intheprotectivebootduringstorage.
Storingelectrodesformorethan2-3months,dry,oratextreme
temperatureswillshortenexpectedoperationallife.
Electrode Cleaning
Donotusestrongsolvents(e.g.acetone,carbontetrachloride,etc.)
tocleanthepHelectrode.Besuretorecalibratetheelectrodeafter
cleaning.
1. Iftheelectrodehasbecomecoatedwithoilorgrease,carefully
washtheelectrodeunderwarmtapwaterusingdish-washing
detergent.Rinsethoroughlywithfreshtapwaterfollowedbyarinse
withdistilledwater.SoaktheelectrodeinpHelectrodestorage
solutionfor30minutesafterthiscleaningprocedure.Recalibratethe
electrodebeforeuse.
2. Iftheelectrodehasbeenexposedtoproteinorsimilarmaterials,
soakinacidicpepsinfor5minutes.Rinsethoroughlywithdistilled
water.Recalibratebeforeuse.
3. Ifthepreviouscleaningproceduresfailtorestoreresponse,soakthe
electrodein0.1NHCIfor30minutes.Rinsethoroughlywithdistilled
water.Recalibratebeforeuse.
4. Ifelectroderesponseisnotrestored,replacetheelectrode.
Electrode Expected Service Life
1. Electrodeshaveanexpectedservicelifeincleanwatersolutions
of12-18months.Annualreplacementisrecommendedforbest
controllingandmonitoringresults.
2. Harshanddirtywaterwillshortenthelifeexpectancyofthe
electrode.
Warnings
1. Theelectrodetipmustbekeptwetatalltimes.Ifitisallowedtodry
outdamagecanoccurrequiringreplacement.
2. Iftheglasssurfaceiscrackedordamagedtheelectrodewillnotwork
properly.
