GENERAL INFORMATION
Why is it important to know the percentage of fat in our body?
Obesity (having an abnormal proportion of fat in the body) is a well-known health risk for people and is strongly
associated with serious diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some types of
cancer. There are other less common symptoms such as sleep apnea and daytime drowsiness, which may be caused by
obesity. Measuring the percentage of fat, or the body’s composition, is a good way for determining your level of health.
The level of water in the body is a health indicator. If the weight remains the same and the TBW (total body water)
increases, this means that the body’s muscle mass is increasing (which is good for health). If the TBW (%) decreases,
this means that the muscle mass is decreasing and the fat content is increasing, or it means water imbalances in the
body or a possible disease caused by lack of water.
How the scales operate
The fat monitor uses one of the most reliable methods available for measuring the body composition, BIA, bioelectric
impulse analysis. BIA measures the resistance, which is proportional to the body’s fat content, using a low-power,
electrical pulse which is harmless for the body. The electrode source generates a small current at one end and the
detection electrodes receive the current at the other end. Data such as height, age, sex are entered in the analysis
program from the BIA device. The weight and the % body fat are calculated automatically.
The scales’ accuracy depends on a number of user-related factors. We recommend you use a routine when weighing
yourself: always weigh yourself at about the same time and in similar conditions.

REFERENCE TABLES
Percentage body fat
Percentage body water
Athlete Mode: An athletic body has a higher muscle mass and
tends to be have a lower water content than a standard adult body.
Therefore, it may give a higher reading for percentage body fat if the
standard reading mode for adults is used. We define “Athlete” as a
person who practices strenuous physical activity about 12 hours a
week and has a resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute or less.
Note:
These data were obtained by means of an empiric process. The data are only references. If you have any doubts about
your health, please see your doctor.
