WARRANTY
The following is an abbreviated version of Trenton Systems’ warranty policy for modular blade servers. For a
complete warranty statement, contact Trenton or visit our website at http://www.trentonsystems.com/.
All Trenton manufactured boards used in systems delivered by Trenton Systems, Inc. carry a five-year warranty.
All non-Trenton manufactured boards and system sub-components including but not limited to power supplies,
DVDs, CD-ROMS, etc. are covered under their original manufacturer’s warranty. All systems built by Trenton are
warranted against defects in material, workmanship and design for a period of one year from date of delivery. Repair
or replacement products will be warranted for a period of three months from the date of shipment or for the
remainder of the original warranty period for that particular product, whichever is longer. Any software or firmware
that is delivered by Trenton will be warranted for a period of one year to perform in accordance with published
specifications prepared, approved and issued by Trenton and/or the appropriate 3
rd
party vendor. Contact Trenton for
the complete system warranty policy.
Buyer agrees that if a Trenton product proves defective, Trenton is only obligated to repair, replace or refund the
purchase price of this product at Trenton's discretion. The warranty is void if the product has been subjected to
alteration, neglect, misuse, or abuse; if any repairs have been attempted by anyone other than Trenton; or if failure is
caused by accident, acts of God, or other causes beyond the control of Trenton. Trenton reserves the right to make
changes or improvements in any product without incurring any obligation to similarly alter products previously
purchased.
In no event shall Trenton Systems, Inc. be liable for any defect in hardware or software or loss or inadequacy of data
of any kind, or for any direct, indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising out of or in connection with the
performance or use of the product or information provided. Trenton Systems, Inc.’s liability shall in no event
exceed the purchase price of the product purchased hereunder. The foregoing limitation of liability shall be equally
applicable to any service provided by Trenton Systems, Inc.
RETURN POLICY
Products returned for repair must be accompanied by a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number, obtained
from Trenton Systems prior to return. Freight on all returned items must be prepaid by the customer, and the
customer is responsible for any loss or damage caused by common carrier in transit. Items will be returned from
Trenton Systems via Ground, unless prior arrangements are made by the customer for an alternative shipping
method

Handling Precautions
WARNING: This system has internal components which may be damaged by electrostatic discharge.
To protect internal components from electrostatic damage, be sure to observe the following precautions when
handling or storing the system:
• The MBT8301 has a net chassis weight of approximately 41.0lbs. (18.59kg). This base chassis weight
includes the chassis, an MBC8240 modular blade card, an TMI8241 mid-plane inteface board, and a rear-
mounted AC power supply. Use proper lifting techniques when moving and installing the system.
• When removing or installing boards and sub-components, keep these components in their static-shielded
bag and/or packaging until you are ready to for component installation.
• Handle the sub-components by their edges.
• Do not touch any sub-component I/O connector pins. Do not apply pressure or attach labels to the board-
level sub-components.
• Use a grounded wrist strap at your system or ground yourself frequently by touching the metal chassis of
the system before handling any sub-components.
• Ensure the systems external power source has a solid connection to an earth ground.
• Use antistatic padding on all work surfaces when installing or removing sub-components.
• Avoid static-inducing carpeted areas.

Before You Begin
Introduction
It is important to be aware of the information listed below before installing your Trenton modular blade
server. System performance may be affected by incorrect usage of these features.
External Power Source – Redundant 900w Power Supply Version
Incoming AC power must be supplied to both of the power supply receptacles located at the rear of the chassis.
These dual AC power connections ensure that the active system power supply; as well as the stand-by/fail-over
supply, is each connected to a power source with a solid earth ground, and each supply must have an incoming
power source of: 100-127/200-240VAC, 10A/5A at 50 to 60Hz.
Chassis Airflow
When installing the chassis, ensure that a minimum free air space is available around the system. The installation
should have a minimum of 4-6 inches (101-152mm) behind the chassis and 7-8 inches
(178-203mm) in front of the chassis. Any front cabinet doors or access aisles must accommodate a MBT8301 front
chassis clearance of at least 7.0” (178mm) in order to provide proper clearance for the fan FRU replacement.
Ideally, a chassis clearance of 0.5-1.5 inches (13-38mm) above the system is desirable
CHASSIS PLACEMENT
The MBT8301 system is designed with ruggedness in mind, however, precautions should be observed to ensure safe
and reliable performance. Place the chassis on a flat, stable surface capable of supporting both the system weight
and any anticipated peripherals. Installation area should be secure and free from danger of liquid or airborne
contaminants that could damage internal components as well as supporting all airflow requirements.

Chapter 1 | Modular Blade System Overview
Description
The Trenton MBT8301-xxx is a CE-compliant and UL recognized, modular blade server tower optimized for
system performance, longevity, and easy field support. The tower-style enclosure of the MBT8301 is
designed for both server room and rugged field deployment locations that require outstanding system
performance in a form factor comparable to traditional mid tower chassis designs.
At the heart of the MBT8301 is Trenton’s U.S. designed and Made in America MBC8240 modular blade card
or SBC. The MBC8240 SBC supports a long-life Intel® processor that delivers superior multi-core
processing performance with the thermal characteristics necessary for reliable and long-term 1U rackmount
server operation in a wide variety of application environments. The MBT8301 chassis supports two, 2.5”
front-access/hot-swap HDD carriers, one media drive bay, and an AC power supply. These components
maximize power delivery and cooling to ensure long-life system reliability with minimal Mean-Time-To-
Repair (MTTR) times.
The MBT8301 server solution supports seven Ethernet interfaces with one port dedicated to remote system
management, up to two HDD or SDD storage drives, an optical media drive, and a hot swappable power
supply. The MBT8301 also has the ability to support an off-the-shelf PCI Express plug-in option card. Some
typical MBT8301 applications include data servers, industrial automation machinery, and weapon control
systems.

The MBC8240 features the Aptio® 4.x BIOS from American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) with a ROM-resident
setup utility called the Aptio Text Setup Environment or TSE. (Note: the CARD’s current MBCES008 BIOS
has the Hibernate and Sleep states disabled.) Details of the Aptio TSE are provided in the separate MBC8240
BIOS Technical Reference manual.
Operating Systems
Trenton Systems has successfully tested the MBC8240 processor card with both Linux (Red Hat RHEL,
Centos) and Windows® 7 (32 or 64-bit). However, there are some operating systems that Intel® does not
recommend for use with the board’s Haswell processor and Lynx Point PCH architecture, notably,
Windows® XP (32 or 64-bit), and Windows® 2003 Server.

DDR3 Memory & CARD Memory Population Rules
Trenton recommends ECC registered DDR3-1600 memory modules for use on the
MBT8301/MBC8240. Unbuffered ECC DDR3 DIMMs are also supported, however, you cannot mix the
ECC registered and unbuffered ECC memory types on the same board.
Each processor on a MBC8240 supports 2 channels of memory. The maximum possible memory interface
speed obtained depends on the specific Intel
®
processor used on the board and other board configuration
options.
Trenton recommends populating the memory sockets
starting with the DIMM closest to the processor socket.
The DIMMs are arranged in an alternating channel pattern.
Moving away from the processor they are: 0A, 0B, 1A, 1B.
For optimal performance, populate each channel fully before
populating the other channel, i.e., populate Channel A’s 0 and
1 slots before populating Channel B’s 0 and 1 slots.
The memory DIMMs on the SHB connect directly to the CPU
and at least one memory module must be installed on the
board for operation.
Universal Serial Bus (USB)
The MBT8301 supports nine (9) USB 2.0 ports. Two are located on the front panel adjacent to the fan fault
indicator lights. One (1) is located on the SBC and six (6) are located on the rear I/O area of the SHB.
Video Interface
The SHB features a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) onboard the ASPEED AST2400 with 8MB of video
memory. The GPU is driven by a x1 PCIe link from the SHB’s Intel
®
C226 PCH. This combination of
features enables the SHB’s video port; located on the board’s I/O plate, to support pixel resolutions up to
1920 x 1200 (WUXGA).

PCI Express Interface
A full-height, PCI Express 3.0 x16 mechanical/x8 electrical interface is supported by the Intel
®
Xeon
®
processor in the MBT8301 via the BRC8244 riser card. PCI Express automatic link negotiation and
bifurcation are implemented and previous PCIe link speeds, Gen 1.1 and 2.0, are also supported. PCI
Express’ link scalability allows for cards with fewer electrical lanes to function in the server’s card slot
supported by the MBC8240 modular blade card and BRC8244 riser card combination. The MBC8240’s PCIe
link will automatically negotiate between the processor’s root link and the plug-in target card for the fastest
possible link speed.
A Word about PCI Express 3.0 Interfaces
PCIe 3.0 doubles the PCIe 2.0 per lane interface speed from 500MB/s (5GT/s) to 1GB/s (8 GT/s) via speed
changes and protocol enhancements. As with all previous versions of the PCI Express specification, the PCIe
3.0 interface is backwards compatible and will run Gen3, Gen2 and Gen1.1 I/O cards on the same interface
link. Running a PCIe 3.0 target device such as a Gen3 I/O card at the actual PCIe 3.0 interface speed of
1GB/s requires that the PCIe 3.0 link from the root complex (i.e. the processor on the MBC8240) to the
target card be tuned and optimized to meet the speed requirements of PCI Express 3.0. If these tuning
conditions are slightly off or not fully optimized, then the interface will operate at a slower interface
speed. Contact Trenton for more details regarding the specifics of your particular PCIe 3.0 implementation.
Ethernet Interfaces
The MBT8301 has six (6) general-purpose 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet interfaces (Lnk 1-6) available on the
rear I/O plate of the Modular Blade Card. An additional 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet interface (Lnk 0) is
dedicated to Trenton’s IPMI implementation, Trenton Smart System Management (SSM). Trenton SSM
allows for remote maintenance and monitoring of health and stability of your Trenton MBT8301.
SATA/600
There are six (6) Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces available on the MBT8301. Three SATA ports are on the
SHB. Three SATA/600 interfaces are routed to the edge connector of the SHB for use on a SATA-equipped
Modular Blade System Midplane Interface Card, such as the MPI8241. All of the SATA interfaces are
driven with a built-in SATA controller from the Intel
®
C226 Platform Controller Hub (PCH). The board’s
SATA ports can support six independent SATA storage devices such as hard disks and CD/DVD-RW devices
at data transfer rates up to 600MB per second on each port.
The SATA controller has three BIOS selectable modes of operation located under the Advanced/SATA
Configuration menu with a legacy (i.e. IDE) mode using I/O space, an AHCI mode using memory space and
a RAID mode. Additionally, the SATA implementation supports Hot Plugging/Swapping to reduce MTTR.

Battery
A built-in lithium battery is provided for ten years of data retention for CMOS memory.
CAUTION: There is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace it only with the
same or equivalent type. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions and any
applicable local regulations.
Battery Replacement
Ensure power is off and power cord is removed before beginning. Removal of the MBC8240 is detailed in
the MBT8301 Installation Guide. The battery is located on the inner side of the I/O bracket end of the
MBC8240.
Use a finger to tilt the battery horizontally out of its socket, pushing it away from the retaining “finger” and
removing.
Caution: Do not use excessive force to remove the battery or damage may result.
To replace the battery, place the positive (+) side towards the vertical retaining finger of the battery socket
and insert downwards until the retaining finger snaps into place.
Reinstall the MBC8240 as detailed in the MBT8301 installation guide and replace any removed cables. After
replacement of CMOS battery, system date and time must be reset in the BIOS.

Chapter 4 | Trenton Smart System Management (Trenton SSM)
The Smart System Management (SSM) software embedded in the MBC8240 is accessible via the dedicated
management Ethernet LAN (Lnk 0). This dedicated interface provides full Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T bandwidth
and, optionally, isolation of these functions to a specific LAN. Trenton’s SSM is built upon the industry standard
Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) and its related sub-components including:
• Intelligent Platform Management Bus (IPMB)
• IPMI Platform Management FRU Information Storage Definition
• Intelligent Chassis Management Bus (ICMB)
Trenton SSM’s implementation of IPMI provides seamless and efficient out-of-band management and control
capability from any compatible device worldwide, regardless of the power-on state and is operating system-agnostic.
A short list of Trenton SSM application software functionality includes:
• Fan speed monitoring
• Fan condition & status
• Alarm monitoring
• FRU management
• Voltage monitoring
• SBC present
• Remote messaging (i.e. call home)
• Polling for processor & memory health
The “intelligence” behind Trenton SSM is the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). It is driven by firmware
that is capable of being upgraded locally or remotely. Management can be done inside a Linux or Windows
®
operating system environment locally or remotely, via software issued under license from American Megatrends
Inc. (AMI) for AMI’s Yet Another Firmware Upgrade Flash (YAFUFlash) tool. Additional information about
YAFUFlash and its implementation in the MBT8301 is available in the MBC8240 BIOS and Trenton Smart System
Management Technical Reference Document.

Chapter 5 | BIOS Messages
Introduction
A status code is a data value used to indicate progress during the boot phase. These codes are outputted to I/O port
80h on the MBC8240 card. Aptio 4.x core outputs checkpoints throughout the boot process to indicate the task the
system is currently executing. Status codes are very useful in aiding software developers or technicians in
debugging problems that occur during the pre-boot process.
Aptio Boot Flow
While performing the functions of the traditional BIOS, Aptio 4.x core follows the firmware model described by the
Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI (“the Framework”). The Framework refers the following “boot
phases”, which may apply to various status code descriptions:
Security (SEC) – initial low-level initialization
Pre-EFI Initialization (PEI) – memory initialization

Driver Execution Environment (DXE) – main hardware initialization

Boot Device Selection (BDS) – system setup, pre-OS user interface & selecting a bootable device

The Pre-EFI Initialization (PEI) and Driver Execution Environment (DXE) phases of the Aptio BIOS use audible

BIOS Status Codes
As the POST (Power On Self Test) routines are performed during boot-up, test codes are displayed on Port 80 POST
code LEDs 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. These LED are located on the top of the CARD, just above the board’s battery
socket. The POST Code LEDs and are numbered from right (position 1 = LED0) to left (position 8 – LED7).
The POST code checkpoints are the largest set of checkpoints during the BIOS pre-boot process. The following
chart is a key to interpreting the POST codes displayed on LEDs 0 through 7 on the MBC8240 and CARDs. Refer to
the board layout in the Specifications chapter for the exact location of the POST code LEDs.
The HEX to LED chart in the POST Code LEDs section will serve as a guide to interpreting specific BIOS status
codes.
