4-1-4. New lithium-ion battery (BCL 1815, BCL 1415)
The new 1.5 Ah lithium-ion batteries Types BCL 1815 and BCL 1415 are developed for light-duty work. Each of
them is equipped with the overdischarge protection circuit, overload protection circuit, overheat protection circuit
and voltage monitoring circuit for each cell to prevent reduction of the battery life due to overdischarge (overuse)
or overcharge (excessive charging).
Each of the Types BCL 1815 and BCL 1415 lithium-ion batteries is equipped with a protective function that
automatically stops output to extend the battery life. The motor may stop automatically in any of the following
cases , and even if the switch is depressed continuously during operation. This is because the protective
function is activated. It is not faulty.
The motor automatically stops when the remaining battery level is low (Type BCL 1815: when the battery
voltage is decreased to about 10 V / Type BCL 1415: when the battery voltage is decreased to about 8 V).
Charge the battery immediately in such case.
The motor may stop if the Model DS 18DFL/DS 14DFL is overloaded. In such case, release the switch and
eliminate the cause of the overload problem. Then the Model DS 18DFL/DS 14DFL is operable.
The battery output is stopped automatically if the battery is overheated during heavy-duty work. In such case,
remove the battery from the tool and cool it down. Then the battery is reusable.
<Nominal life of the battery (charging/discharging frequency)>
Each of the Types BCL 1815 and BCL 1415 lithium-ion batteries can be charged/discharged up to about 600
times. Note that these batteries are intended for light-duty work. If they are used for heavy-duty work (in
combination with cordless power tools such as circular saws, jig saws, saber saws, disk grinders and blowers)
continuously, the battery life may be shortened drastically.
<Overheat protection circuit>
Unlike the conventional 3.0 Ah lithium-ion batteries Types BCL 1830 and BCL 1430, the Types BCL 1815 and
BCL 1415 lithium-ion batteries are greatly influenced by temperature rise. To cope with this problem, each battery
has a thermal protector to stop the output automatically when the battery temperature is excessively high. During
normal operation, the output is not stopped by the protective function due to temperature rise in the battery.
However, the protective function may be activated and the output may be stopped before the battery runs down if
the battery is used outdoors in summer or used at high temperatures or if the high-temperature battery is used. If
the thermal protector is activated, remove the battery from the tool and cool it completely in a well-ventilated
place. The operational temperature of the thermal protector is 80 5ûC and the recovery temperature range is
from 46ûC to 68ûC. It takes about 30 minutes from when the protective function is activated till when the battery is
cooled down and reusable at a temperature of 20ûC. Note that such period depends on the use environment.
