2. Become familiar with all controls and their proper operation. Know how to stop the mower and
how to disengage the power in an emergency
.
3. Do not allow children under the age of 14 to operate this mower. Children who are 14 years of
age and older must read and understand the operating instructions and the safety rules in this
manual, and must be trained and supervised by a parent
.
4. Do not allow anyone to operate this mower until they have read and understand the instructions.
5. In order to avoid contact with the blade or injury caused by a thrown object, stay in the
operator's zone behind the handles, and keep children and bystanders at least 75' (20 m) away
from the mower while it is in operation. Stop the motor immediately if someone enters the
mowing area
.
6. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire,
bones, toys, and other foreign objects that could be tripped over or thrown by the blade. Thrown
objects can cause serious personal injury
.
7. Plan your mowing pattern in such a way as to avoid discharging material toward roads,
sidewalks, bystanders, etc. D
o not discharge material against a wall or obstruction. Doing so
may cause the discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator
.
8. Always wear proper eye protection in order to protect your eyes while operating or performing

SJOW–A, SJTW–A, or SJTOW–A
.
13. Extension Cord: Verify that the extension cord is in good condition, is heavy enough to carry
the current that your mower will draw, and is polarized (one blade of the plug is wider than the
other). A 100' (30 m) extension cord should be of 14 AWG, a 50' (15 m) extension cord should
be 16 AWG, and a 150' (45 m) extension cord should be 12 AWG. Undersized cords cause a
drop in the line voltage, which leads to a loss of power and overheating
.
14. In order to reduce the likelihood of disconnecting the lawn mower from the extension cord, be
sure to use the cord restraint provided, as shown in the illustration below
:
15. In order to reduce the risk of electric shock, this lawn mower is equipped with a polarized plug
(one blade is wider than the other), and must be used with a polarized extension cord. The
lawn mower's plug will only fit into the polarized extension cord one way. If the plug does not fit
into the extension cord properly, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a proper
polarized extension cord. A polarized extension cord must be plugged into a polarized wall
outlet. This plug will only fit into the polarized outlet one way. If the plug does not fit into the
outlet properly, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to
install a proper outlet. Do not alter the lawn mower's plug, the receptacle on the extension
cord, or the plug on the extension cord in any way
.
16. Household circuit: This mower is designed to operate on a 15 A circuit. If the mower has
difficulty starting when connected to a circuit that contains a standard 15 A fuse or circuit
breaker, call the toll-free helpline (
1 866 523-5218). Do not use a fuse or circuit breaker with
higher rating than that specified for your particular branch circuit.

Repeat these steps as necessary.
20. Do not use mower for any job except that for which it is intended. Do not force the mower.
21. Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
22. Stay Alert: Do not operate the mower when you are tired. Pay attention to what you are doing. Use
common sense.
23. Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the cutting deck. Contact with the blade can ampu
tate hands and feet.
24. Do not attempt to adjust the wheels or the cutting height while the motor is running.
25. Avoid dangerous environments. Do not operate the mower in the rain or in wet or damp grass.
26. Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light. Do not rush a mowing job.
27. Stop the blade when crossing gravel driveways, walkways, or roads.
28. If the mower starts to vibrate abnormally, stop the motor and check for the cause immediately. Vibration is
generally a warning of trouble.
29. Stop the motor and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or
unclogging the chute. The cutting blade will continue to rotate for a few seconds after the motor is shut
off. Do not place any part of your body in the blade area until you are sure that the blade has stopped
rotating.
30. Never operate the mower without a proper trail shield, discharge cover, grass catcher, blade/motor
control, or other safety protective devices in place and in working order. Do not operate the mower with
damaged safety devices. Doing so can result in injury.
Slopes are a major factor related to accidents involving slips and falls, which can result in severe injury.
Operating the mower on a slope requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. For your
safety, use the slope gauge that is included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this
mower on a sloped or hilly area. Do not mow a slope that has an angle of greater than 15°.
1. Mow across the face of a slope, and never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing
direction on a slope.
2. Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps that may cause a slip or a trip. Tall grass can hide
obstacles. Remove all objects such as rocks, tree limbs, etc., that can be tripped over or thrown by the
blade.
3. Always be sure of your footing. If you feel like you are losing your balance, release the blade/motor control
handle immediately. The blade will stop rotating within 3 seconds.
4. Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments, because you could lose your footing or balance.
5. Do not mow a slope that has an angle of greater than 1, as determined using the slope gauge.
6. Do not mow wet or damp grass. Unstable footing can cause slipping.
1. Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not aware of the presence of children. Keep children out of the
mowing area and under the watchful care of a responsible adult. Stay alert, and turn the mower off if a
child enters the mowing area. Look behind and down for small children before and while moving back
wards. Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, doorways, shrubs, trees, or other objects that
may obscure your view of a child who may run into the path of the mower.
2. Do not allow children under the age of 14 to operate this mower. Children who are 14 years of age and
older must read and understand the operating instructions and safety rules in this manual, and must be
trained and supervised by a parent.

OPERATING THE LAWN MOWER
Connecting the Power Cord
The cord restraint is located on the back of the upper handle, and when it is used properly, it
helps to protect the switch assembly and the extension cord.
A single height adjustment lever is used to adjust the cutting height. The lever is located
beside the right rear wheel, and has six height positions. The height of the cut can be changed
by moving the lever from one position to another. Simply pull the lever in order to unlock it,
and then move it to the desired position. Doing so sets all of the wheels to the same position.
The mower is equipped with a mulching plug so that it can cut and re-cut the grass for finer
clippings. Refer to the next section for tips on cutting with the mulching plug in place. The
mower should never be used without the mulching plug in place.
Selecting an Extension Cord
The chart below showns the length of extension cords and the corresponding acceptable cord ratings.
For a 50' (15 m) cord, use 16 AWG
For a 100' (30 m) cord, use 14 AWG
For a 150' (45 m) cord, use 12 AWG
Use only a CSA listed extension cord that is approved for outdoor use.
IMPORTANT: Using any other length or rating of cord will adversly effect the
performance and possibly the life of the electric motor, and may also cause breakers
to trip or fuses to blow in the household fuse box.
Cord Restraint
Attach the extension cord (not provided) to the cord restraint as follows:
1. Form a small loop in the extension cord. Allow enough excess cord to make the connection
to the switch (approximately 20” [50 cm]).
2. Slip the loop through the slot on the bottom of the cord restraint, and then up over the tab.
This will prevent the extension cord from disconnecting from the switch during operation
3. Keep the cord restraint as close to the motor/blade control as possible.

9
Mowing The Lawn
Mulching Tips
NOTE: A sharp blade will greatly enhance the performance of the mower, especially when
cutting high grass. Be sure to check the blade and to sharpen it at least once per year, as
described in the Maintenance section.
Verify that the lawn is free of stones, sticks, wires, and other objects that could damage the
blades, the lawn mower, or the motor. These objects could be accidentally thrown by the
mower in any direction, and could cause serious personal injury to the operator and to others.
In order to prevent electric shock, do not operate the mower in damp or wet conditions.
Always start from the point that is closest to the power source where the extension cord is
connected.
Never mow in circles. Travel back and forth across the lawn, starting from the point that is
closest to the outlet and moving away from the outlet so that the cord lies behind the mower, in
the cut portion of the lawn, and out of the way (see Fig. 6).
Do not allow the extension cord to wrap around trees, shrubs, or other obstacles. When
picking up the extension cord, wind the cord in a series of equal loops in order to prevent it
from tangling.
When cutting heavy grass, reduce walking speed in order to allow for a more effective cut and
a proper discharge of the clippings. For a healthy lawn, always cut off one-third or less of the
total length of the grass. The average lawn should be approximately 1 1/2 to 2” (3.8 to 5 cm)
long during cool months, and more than 2” (5 cm) long during hot months. If there is growth,
the lawn should be cut in the fall.
For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass, because it tends to stick to the underside of the
deck, preventing proper mulching of grass clippings. New or thick grass may require a
narrower cut. The ground speed should be adjusted to the condition of the lawn. If mowing has
been delayed and the grass has been allowed to grow longer than 4" (10 cm), mow the lawn
twice in orde to reduce the grass height to a maximum of 3 1/4” (8.3 cm).
WARNING: If you strike a foreign object, stop the motor and disconnect the power cord.
Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage. Repair any damage before operating the
mower. Excessive vibration of the mower during operation is an indication of damage.
Thoroughly inspect the mower and repair any damage before operating the mower.
10
Adjusting the Cutting Height
Replacing the Cutting Blade
1. Adjust the cutting height to the desired setting.
2. Simply move the lever (1) toward the wheel, and
then place it in the desired position.
This will set all of the wheels to the same height.
3. To raise the height, release the height adjust
ment lever from its current position, and pull
it toward the back of the mower.
4. To lower the height, release the height adjust
ment lever from its current position, and
push it toward the front of the mower.
A single height adjustment lever is used to adjust the cutting height. The lever has six height positions.
The height of the cut can be changed by moving the lever from one position to another.
WARNING: Be sure to UNPLUG THE POWER CORD before adjusting the height.
MAINTENANCE
WARNING: Always stop the motor and disconnect it from the power source before cleaning, lubricating,
or performing any repairs or maintenance.
Replacing the Cutting Blade
WARNING: Always protect your hands by wearing heavy gloves and/or wrapping the cutting edges with
newspapers or other materials when performing any maintenance on the blades. Be sure to disconnect the
mower from the power supply.
Removing the Blade
Stop the motor and disconnect the mower from the power supply. Turn the mower on its side.
Wedge a block of wood between the blade and the mower deck in order to prevent the blade from turning
when the nut is removed. Using a 15 mm wrench or socket, loosen the blade nut and remove the blade
Installing the Blade
WARNING: The blade hardware is not only used to attach the blade assembly, but it is also an insulated
safety device, and should never be altered in any way. If replacement is necessary, use original equipment
parts, as shown in the parts list on page 16. Verify that the blade hub assembly has bottomed out against
the motor shaft. Place the cutting blade, locking plate, and blade nut against the blade hub assembly, and
tighten the blade nut finger-tight.
NOTE: Be sure to replace the parts in the exact order in which they were removed. When installing the cutting
blade, verify that it is installed with the curved ends pointing toward the mower deck, and not toward the ground.
Tighten the blade nut using a torque wrench in order to ensure that it is tightened properly.
The recommended torque for the blade nut is 450 to 600 in-lb. (52 to 69 NM) In order to ensure safe operation of
blade.
