1 Safety instructions
1.1 General notes
CAUTION
Warning of personal injury.
Observe the safety instructions listed in the PR 5900 installation manual.
1.2 Description
The WE1 option is used to establish an intrinsically safe interface between a PR 5900
installed in a safe area (or with Y2 option in zone 2/22) and load cells or weighing
platforms located in a zone 1 or 21 Ex area as dened by European Directive 2014/34/EU
and related harmonized European standards (see also Chapter 5.1).
The device is designed for weighing applications requiring intrinsically safe interfacing.
The PR 5900 with WE1 option ensures that no electrical power exceeding the maximum
permissible limits is transmitted into the Ex area, even in the event of a circuitry fault.
The PR 5900 with WE1 option provides for intrinsically safe connection to
-a voltage output for the supply of load cells or weighing platforms located in zone 1
or 21,
-a measuring voltage input from zone 1 or 21, and
-a sense voltage input from zone 1 or 21.
This is achieved by means of double current and voltage limiters in the supply circuit as
well as voltage limiters in the analog electronics (weighing electronics board) of the
PR 5900 with WE1 option.

2 Installation
2.1 General information
Installation should be performed by an authorized specialist, in accordance with
applicable laws, rules and regulations, ordinances, and standards. In particular, the
EN 60079-14 standard must be taken into account.
All cables leading to and from the PR 5900 have to be securely installed.
Any connections that are not being used (cable glands) must be sealed o with approved
locking screws in order to guarantee appropriate IP protection.
WARNING
Working on the device while it is switched on may have life-threatening
consequences.
Disconnect the device from the power supply.
Live parts may be exposed when tools are used to open covers or remove parts.
Please note that capacitors in the device may still carry an electrical charge even
after disconnecting the device from all voltage sources.
Do not remove any existing safety equipment/covers.
2.2 Weighing electronics board for zones 1 and 21
Note:
The weighing electronics board cannot be replaced retroactively as this option and the
basic unit are permanently assigned during production.
This assignment is regulated by the BIOS.
If these components do not match, an error message will appear and the device will not
start.

2.5 WE1 load cell supply voltage
The load cell supply voltage cannot be changed retroactively.
The desired voltage must be specied when ordering, see Chapters 4.2 and 4.4.
2.6 WE1 potential-free load cell supply voltage
The device with WE1 option will be delivered with an intrinsically safe circuit that is
galvanically connected with the equipotential bonding conductor (PE).
At distances >50 m a potential-free load cell supply voltage is required. This is done as
follows:
When jumper "J250" is open, the intrinsically safe circuit is isolated from the
housing (PE) at a minimum test voltage of 500 V.
1. Cut jumper "J250" on the weighing electronics board.
2. Turn the remaining wire leads upward and cut them just above the circuit board.
Make sure that both contacts are separated by a minimum distance of 2 mm and do
not touch other potentials.

currents between the individual conducting system components.

Improper connection of the connecting cable screens can cause severe personal
injury and damage to systems!
At distances > 50 m, the screen may only be connected at one end.
Connect the connecting cable screen to the PR 5900, see installation manual.
Open bridge "J250" on the WE1 weighing electronics board; see Chapter 2.6.
For load cells where the screen is ush against the housing and when using junction
box PR 6130/64 Sa, connect the screen of the connecting cable and open the bridge
above the sense terminals on the board of the junction box, see PR 6130/64 Sa
installation manual.
Do not connect the connecting cable screen in the case where load cell screens are
ush against the housing and when using junction box PR 6130/65 S; see also
Chapter 2.4.
