The PSB Story
There are quite literally hundreds of loudspeaker brands from which to choose,
and thousands of different models. Many are merely “me-too” designs, but some
are excellent products from competent, experienced engineers.
So it takes something special to stand above the crowd, and speaker-makers strive to do so. Radical
“new” technologies and claims of supernatural sonic abilities are just a couple of the headlines
manufacturers rely on to get noticed. We wish we could share a few closely guarded secrets of
PSB’s success: an exotic woofer-cone material, perhaps, or a radical new crossover circuit. We can’t.
At PSB Speakers, we take a somewhat different view. While consistently advancing the state of
the loudspeaker art for 35 years, we claim no single technological “breakthrough.” The truth is
rather less exotic and a good deal more labor-intensive: hard work. That means careful, critical
system design, strict adherence to “value-first” principles, and deliberate—even dogged—development
of drivers, crossovers and enclosures—all pursued over thousands of person-hours of lab,
prototype-shop, and listening-room work. By concentrating on the continuous refinement of basic
principles—smooth, accurate tonal balance, extended frequency and dynamic range, and true-to-
life spatial imaging—PSB has produced results that are far more persuasive, and speak far more
eloquently for themselves.
“Paul Barton (PSB’s founder and chief designer) is a legend in the speaker business” said
Stereophile’s Robert Reina. “For 30 years this musician and engineer has dedicated his life to
providing speaker purchasers with higher levels of sonic realism at lower prices. Barton is a frugal
perfectionist, and his obsession with psychoacoustics is evident in all his designs
1
.”
Oh yes—there is one PSB “secret,” a resource unavailable to any other loudspeaker maker:
PSB’s unparalleled, on-going research into loudspeaker/listener interaction. For over 35 years,
Paul Barton and PSB have studied this discipline using the unique technical facilities of the
Canadian National Research Council. This government-sponsored scientific campus is home to one
of the world’s most advanced acoustical laboratories where, combining pure research with literally
thousands of hours of scientifically controlled “double-blind” listening studies, PSB has compiled an
unequaled store of information on sound reproduction and perception. Today, in fact, this is perhaps
the world’s preeminent knowledge-base regarding the critical interactions of loudspeakers, listeners,
and room acoustics. These days, loudspeakers are “solutions” that have evolved out of increasingly
desirable applications, such as home theater and whole house audio systems. PSB serves in-room,
on-wall, in-wall, in-ceiling and in-cabinet loudspeaker applications. Each application faces unique
acoustical and design challenges.
Recognizing and understanding what today’s listeners want is what PSB is all about. Fulfilling those
demands is where PSB excels. And providing the highest performance rated speakers possible, at the
best value, is where PSB places its stamp of integrity.
Discriminating consumers worldwide, audiophiles and the critical audio press all conclude that
PSB Speakers truly is a unique voice in the crowd.
