2.2 Description
The closed measuring system with gas filling consists of a temperature probe, a measuring
line and a Bourdon tube. Heat applied to the temperature probe produces change in
pressure in the closed system. This results in deflection of the Bourdon tube which is
displayed via the the pointer shaft.
The model STW15 exhaust gas temperature controller is used for flue-gas monitoring in
heat generation plant. When a fixed switch point is reached or when there is a measuring
line break, the micro switch triggers a switching operation. This action is carried out by
means of a shifting disc that is arranged at the pointer shaft. The exhaust-gas temperature
controller switches back automatically after the specified safe operating condition has
been reached.

Physical injuries and damage to property and the environment caused
by hazardous media
Upon contact with hazardous media (e.g. oxygen, acetylene, flammable
or toxic substances), harmful media (e.g. corrosive, toxic, carcinogenic,
radioactive), and also with refrigeration plants and compressors, there is a
danger of physical injuries and damage to property and the environment.
Should a failure occur, aggressive media with extremely high temperature
and under high pressure or vacuum may be present at the instrument.
For these media, in addition to all standard regulations, the appropriate
existing codes or regulations must also be followed.
Wear the requisite protective equipment (see chapter 3.6 “Personal
protective equipment”).
WARNING!
Injuries and damage to property and the environment caused by
escaping liquid xylene after damage to the measuring line
Upon contact with escaping liquid xylene, there is a risk of injury caused by
inhalation or contact with skin. In addition, xylene is a flammable material and
thus can lead to damage to property and the environment.
For this filling medium, in addition to all general regulations, the relevant
provisions must also be observed.
Wear the requisite protective equipment (see chapter 3.6 “Personal
protective equipment”).
DANGER!
Danger to life caused by electric current
Upon contact with live parts, there is a direct danger to life.
The instrument may only be installed and mounted by skilled personnel.

5.1 Mounting
The special design of the mounting bracket allows a very flexible installation. Select the
mounting point such that the instrument is clearly visible and the ability to run connection
cable and measuring line is ensured.
1. For fixing the mounting bracket, use the accompanying mounting accessories.
Depending on the fixing base, there are 2 M4 x 30 semi-circular wood screws
(incl. D6 x 30 wall plugs) available and also 2 cylindrical self-tapping screws, DIN 7971 C
4.2 x 9.5.
2.
Screw the PG gland (PG 13.5) into the protection cap.
Prepare the cable and pull it through the PG gland into the protection cap.
The connection leads must also be suitable for the supplied cable gland
(PG 13.5: Clamping range 6 ... 12 mm).
Connect the stranded wire according to the pin assignment indicated on the product
label. For this, observe the numbering of the connectors on the rear of the case.
The electrical connection must only be made by qualified skilled personnel.
Protective conductor connection
Use protective conductors with end splices. Insert the stranded wire into the terminal
and fix by means of the mounting screw.
Terminal connection
Use stranded wire with end splices. Insert it into the provided terminals and fix by
means of the mounting screw. Conductor cross-section max. 1.5 mm

5. Commissioning, operation
The instruments do not provide for incorporated overcurrent protectors.
Provide suitable protection systems in order to prevent the contacts from welding
through overload.
3.
Connect the connection cable in accordance with the connection diagram.
Fully slide the instrument onto the installed mounting bracket.
Attach and engage the protection cap and tighten the PG gland until sealing is
achieved (recommended tightening torque: 4 Nm).
4. Connect the measuring line and cable.
5. Mount the probe into the exhaust pipe.
5.2 Mounting the probe
Before mounting the probe, check whether the probe material used (specified in the
delivery note) is chemically resistant/neutral to the medium being measured.
If possible, the entire length of the stem should be exposed to the temperature being
measured.
A thermowell must not be used because of its influence on the response time.
Errors in thermal conduction occur if the area where the temperature is to be measured is
so small, that the mass of the temperature probe acts as thermal capacity. Errors in thermal
conduction may also occur if the immersion depth is insufficient, if the mounting fittings are
connected to a good thermal conductor (metal plate or similar) and there is a considerable
difference in temperature between the measuring and mounting element temperatures.

6084582.07 11/2017 EN/DE/FR/ES
EN
5.3 Connection without the use of a measuring line
The smallest bending radius of the measuring line should not be less than 6 mm. Bending
or interruption of the measuring line lead to failure of the instrument.
If there are shocks or vibrations at the installation site of the probe, form several freely
swinging loops between the last fixing point and the probe. Any excess length must also be
coiled, since cutting the measuring line would render the instrument unserviceable.
Avoid welding or soldering and permanent fastening of the measuring line as this could
seriously damage the measuring line and impair the operation of the instrument.
The measuring line should not be installed close to cold or heat sources.
5.4 Case mounting
The case ingress protection is indicated on the product label and must be observed during
installation.
If possible, mount the indicator case at a shock- and vibration-free location, but observe at
least the following limit values:
Frequency range < 150 Hz
Acceleration < 0.7 g (7 m/s
2
)
A flexible connection line between the measuring point and thermometer can be used to
isolate the installation from the measuring point.
To ensure the best measurement accuracy possible, the ambient temperature on the
indicator case should be between 0 ... 40 °C. Higher or lower ambient temperatures can
cause indication errors.
5. Commissioning, operation

Screw terminal: Conductor cross-section max. 1.5 mm
2
(always use end splices if
flexible stranded wires are used)
The terminal assignment is stated on the product label of the thermometer.
The instruments do not provide for incorporated overcurrent protectors.
In order to prevent the contacts from welding through overload, suitable protection systems
must be implemented by the operator.
