Important Safeguards (Be sure to read this page first because it contains critical information about the operation of the unit)
Please read and follow these essential safety procedures to prevent accidents,
injury to yourself and others, as well as property damage. Read all these
instructions carefully to insure the safe use of your Sunpak flash unit.
Explanation of symbols
WARNING: These symbols warn of the presence
of non-insulated “hazardous voltage” inside the
product. Failure to observe the instructions marked
by these symbols and opening of modifying the
product may result in loss of life or serious bodily
injury. Make sure to observe the instructions.
CAUTION: Failure to observe the instructions
marked by this symbol while handling the product
may result in serious bodily injury or damage to

WARNING
• When this unit needs maintenance, inspection or servicing, bring it to your dealer
or nearest SUNPAK service center.
• Do not attempt to open, repair, or modify this unit. It contains a high-voltage
circuit, which may cause a fire, electric shock or serious injury.
• Do not use accessories other than those specified by SEA & SEA SUNPAK CO.,
LTD. Doing so may cause a fire, electric shock or other injury.
• If the unit is dropped or damaged, or if foreign matter enters the unit, bring it to
your dealer or nearest SUNPAK service center.
• Do not damage, destroy, modify, bend by force, stretch, twist, bundle, place a
heavy object on or heat the cables. Doing so may cause a fire or electric shock.
• Do not operate the unit near the eyes (especially those of infants). Firing the
unit near someone’s eyes may cause visual impairment. Make sure to allow
a minimum distance of about 1 meter (3.3 ft) or more when taking pictures of
infants.
• Make sure to install the batteries with correct +/- polarity. When replacing
batteries, replace all of the batteries with new ones of the same manufacturer
and type. Using batteries improperly may result in leakage, overheating, rupture,
shortened service life or contact failure.
• Keep the unit away from beverages, cosmetics or chemicals. If spilled or
splashed liquid gets inside the unit, it may result in fire, electric shock or injury.
• Do not operate the unit in extremely humid environments, such as a bathroom or
near a humidifier. This may result in a fire, electric shock or injury.
• Always remove batteries before cleaning or otherwise maintaining the unit.
• Do not operate the unit if there is any possibility that a flammable or explosive
gas is present.
CAUTION
• Do not place the unit in a dusty place under direct sunlight or where it can be
exposed to high humidity. This can result in overheating inside the unit, which
can cause a fire hazard.
• Do not store the unit in a dusty place; otherwise, subsequent use of the unit may
result in a fire or electric shock.
• Do not place the unit in an unstable position, otherwise, the unit may fall or drop
accidentally, causing damage to the unit or personal injury.
Other Precautions
• Do not clean the unit with benzine, lacquer thinner or alcohol. This can result in
discoloration or deformation of the unit. Serious stains or dirt should be removed
with a soft dry cloth.
IMPORTANT
The Sunpak auto 16R pro is not compatible with the Sunpak
DX 12R. To prevent malfunction, never attempt to connect
this unit to the DX 12R’s main body or light source.

Your Sunpak auto 16R pro is a fl ash unit designed mainly for the purpose of
effective, shadow-free macro shooting. It has a high light intensity of GN16 and,
when it is used to shoot portraits, beautiful catch lights can be captured in the
subject’s eyes, making it an excellent auxiliary light source.

Features and Functions of Sunpak auto 16R pro
When used in macro shooting, lets you shoot clear, shadow-free pictures.
The guide number has been increased by 80% compared to our previous
models. This makes the unit useful in portrait shooting as well as in macro
shooting.
A highly accurate power ratio function makes it possible to manually set the light
intensity in 25 steps from 1/1 (full-power firing) to 1/256.
A large, easy-to-read LCD panel displays settings and necessary information in
an easy-to-understand way. The LCD panel has a backlight function so you can
check displayed data even under low light.
The light emitting section has four focusing auxiliary lamps to assist focusing
under low or no light. An optional switch is available so you can keep these
lamps on and use them for shooting illumination.
In case of malfunction or error indication is appeared on the LCD display,
please turn the power off and then turn it ON again pressing the MODE button
simultaneously.
IMPORTANT
Handling precaution —————————————
• After installing this unit on the camera, be sure to hold the
combination by the camera. If you hold it by the power supply
section or light emitting section of the flash, the camera could
slip off the shoe or the light emitting section could drop.

Mounting the Unit on the Camera
Attaching the Light Emitting Section
ᱺ Select the adapter ring matching the filter diameter
of your camera lens and fit the ring on the lens by
screwing in the ring clockwise (Photo 1). Three
adapter rings with thread diameters of 58 mm, 62 mm
and 72 mm are provided with this unit so make sure
you check the filter diameter of your camera lens by
referring to the user’s manual for the camera (or lens).
77 mm adapter ring is optional.
ᱻ Press and hold both attaching buttons for the light
emitting section and attach the light emitting section
to the camera lens (as shown in Photo 2). The light
emitting section is not fixed but can be rotated freely.
ᱼ The adapter ring may not fit depends on the size of
lens.
ᱽ Vignetting (i.e. image cut-off) may occur if auto 16R
pro is used with wide angle lenses of 28mm or less or
zoom lenses at less 50mm.
Attaching the Power Supply Section
IMPORTANT
CAUTION
Before attaching (or detaching)
the power supply section to (or
from) the camera, be sure to set
the power switch to the “OFF”
position. If the power is left on when
the power supply section is being
attached or detached, the camera
may malfunction.
For safety purpose, auto16R pro
cannot turn ON the power source if
the connecting plug of Ring Flash
Head is not inserted correctly in the
socket of Power Supplier.
ᱺ How to determine the shutter speed: When your camera
is an SLR camera, set its shutter speed to no more than X
second. If your camera is a lens shutter type camera, firing
will be synchronized with any shutter speed.

ᱺ Before installing the batteries,
make sure the power switch is
in the “OFF” position. Open the
battery compartment by sliding it
downward as shown by the arrow.
ᱻ Insert four new “AA”-size batteries
into the battery compartment,
ensuring that the polarity
indications “+” and “−” are
observed correctly. The battery
compartment is designed to
prevent incorrect insertion. The
unit will not operate properly if the
batteries are installed incorrectly.
ᱼ Close the battery cover and
set the power switch to the
“ON” position. When the unit is
switched on, it will start charging
with a slight humming sound
and the Ready lamp will come
on when the unit is fully charged.
Now the unit is ready for shooting.
ᱽ To switch the power off, slide the
switch to the “OFF” position. The
Ready lamp will go off and the
unit will not flash.

OP (Option) switch ———————————————————
When the power switch is set to the “OP” position as shown in photo 6, the focusing
lamps built into the four corners of the light emitting section light continuously. This
light can be used as AF auxiliary lighting under low light or as auxiliary lighting
when a strobe light would be too strong to use.
Lighting of Ready Lamp
f The flash is ready to fire as soon as the Ready lamp lights. However, if full-power
firing is attempted immediately after the Ready lamp lights, the f-value will be
one step darker than the specified guide number. To obtain full power, wait about
5 to 10 seconds after the Ready lamp lights.
f When using the unit in the Multi-firing mode, be sure to use brand-new batteries
so that they can be recharged fully.
f If it takes more than 30 seconds for the Ready lamp to come back on after the
flash is fired at full power, it is likely that the batteries are exhausted. Replace
them with new ones.
Focusing Lamps
The unit has four focusing lamps to support focusing.
When the LAMP button on the power supply section or
on the back of the light emitting section is pressed (both
buttons are shown in photo on right), the focusing lamps
light for about 30 seconds, then turn off again. However,
if the fl ash is emitted within 30 seconds, the focusing
lamps automatically turn off immediately before fi ring.
The focusing lamps can also be turned off by pressing
the LAMP button again. The focusing lamps are
designed for use under low light when the AF might have
diffi culty obtaining focus, but they can also be used to
shoot pictures using their light alone. In the latter case,
do not press the LAMP button but set the power switch
to the “OP” position. The lamps will remain on as long as
the power switch is in this position.

When turning out focus lamps,
push “LAMP” button on the Power
Supplier. Even pushing “LAMP”
button on the Ring Flash Head,
focus lamps don’t put out.

Shooting in A (Auto EV Control) Mode
After the unit is installed on the camera, press the
MODE button to select “A” to put the unit in the Auto
EV control mode. This mode can be used with TTL-
compatible cameras as well as other cameras.
ᱺ First set the shooting sensitivity (ISO speed) of the
strobe. Press the MODE button repeatedly until “ISO”
blinks, then turn the rotary dial to select the desired ISO
value, and press the MODE button again. Now the setup
of the ISO speed of the strobe is complete.
ᱻ Press the MODE button again until “A” is displayed
and press the SEL (Select) button so that “F” blinks. Then, turn the rotary dial to
select the exposure value matching the purpose of shooting. This unit can fi ne
adjust the exposure values between 2 and 16 in 19 steps.
ᱼ Apply the exposure value set above to the camera lens. Now the system is ready
for shooting in the Auto mode.
Setting Example —————————————————————————
When the sensitivity is set to “ISO
100,” the exposure can be adjusted
in 19 steps between F2 and F16. For
reference, the EV control range at
each f-value is shown by the bar graph
in the interlocked range indicator. For
example, when the display is as shown
on the right, the EV control range at F4
is from 0.5 to 4 meters (1.5 to 13 ft).
When deciding the f-value, it is
recommended to open the aperture (set a smaller value) when shooting a distant
object and to stop it down (set a larger value) when shooting a closer object. When
you need to increase the depth of fi eld, select the minimum f-value in the EV control
range. The bar graph shows the working range of the Auto mode between 0.5 and
16 meters (1.6 and 52 ft). When the range is larger or smaller than the limit, “_” or “`”
is displayed respectively.
• In close-up shooting, the brightness may vary depending on the condition of
the lens (such as the zoom projection length). In such a case, adjust the f-value
accordingly.

IMPORTANT
• When using an SLR camera, always make sure
that the camera’s shutter speed is set to X second or
lower.
Shooting in M (Manual) Mode
This unit is capable of manual mode shooting in 25
steps from full power (1/1) to 1/256 power (in 1/3 EV
steps). In the following cases, press the MODE button
until “M” is displayed to make full use of the effects
of the Manual mode. For Manual mode setup, see
“Setups” on page 8. The Manual mode setups are
held in memory even after the power switch is set
to OFF then ON again, so that you can use the unit
without additional setup as far as you use the Manual
mode.
The Manual mode is effective in following cases.
When daylight sync flashing (in outdoor shooting under sunlight, the strobe light
can be used as an auxiliary light to minimize shadows on the subject formed by
the sun) or shooting against backlight is required.
When you want to take several pictures by varying the f-values.
When you want to use motor drive or auto winder.
When you want to increase the number of flashes.
⁴ This indicates the shooting range displayed on the LCD panel. “`” is displayed
when the maximum distance of 16 meters (52 ft) is exceeded. “`” is displayed
when the minimum distance of 0.25 meter (0.8 ft) is exceeded.

Setup Example ——————————————————————————
Press the MODE button again until “M”
is displayed and press the SEL button
until the “PR (Power Ratio)” value
blinks. Then, turn the rotary dial to
select the desired exposure value and
press the SEL button again. Now the
PR value setup is complete.
Press the SEL button again so that
the “F (f-value)” blinks. Then, turn the
rotary dial to select the exposure value while checking the bar graph on the range
indicator below. The reference shooting range is either the distance indicated on
the camera lens or the actual subject distance measured visually.
When the display is as shown above, for example, the ISO speed is set to 100, the
PR value is 1/4, the f-value is F4.0 and the fl ash fi res with the optimum power on the
subject located at about 2 meters (6.6 ft).
IMPORTANT
The value shown by the bar graph on the range indicator is
merely a reference value, and the actual value is variable
depending on the brightness of the subject and conditions
of the lens. For optimum shooting, it is recommended to
perform test shooting before determining the PR value.

When the subject is located within the working range of Auto mode shooting, the
“AUTO OK” indicator is displayed for about 2 seconds at the same time as the fl ash
fi res. If this indicator is not displayed, approach the subject or use an f-value with a
longer working range.
f Even when the subject is within the working range, “AUTO OK” may not be
displayed depending on the density (reflectivity) of the subject.
f if the flash is fired immediately after the Ready lamp lights, the working range
may be reduced.
z Test firing ————————————————————————
Press the TEST button after the Ready lamp is lit to perform test fi ring.

Shooting in MULT (Multi-firing) Mode
When the MODE button is set to “MULT,” the fl ash
enters the Multi-fi ring mode, in which a continuous
motion can be captured in a single picture just
like a stop-motion picture. The fi ring frequency
(number of fl ashes per second, expressed in Hz)
can be selected between 1 and 90 Hz. To set the
frequency, press the SEL button so that “Hz” blinks
and turn the rotary dial to select the desired value.
After this, press the SEL button so that the “Flash”
value blinks and then set the number of fl ashes.
The number of successive fl ashes can basically be selected between 2 and 99 but
it depends on the fi ring power and frequency. See the table on the right for details.
Other operations in this mode are identical to the Manual mode.

This photo is an example obtained
with a number of fl ashes of 9 (times),
frequency of 15Hz, PR of 1/16 and

Notes for Successive Firing
To prevent degradation due to overheating that may result from successive fi ring, it
is recommended to limit the number of fl ashes as shown in the following table and
pause fi ring for more than 10 minutes after the limit is reached.
