Handling your board safely
Anti-static handling
This board contains CMOS devices that could be damaged in the event of static electricity
being discharged through them. At all times, please observe anti-static precautions when
handling the board. This includes storing the board in appropriate anti-static packaging and
wearing a wrist strap when handling the board.
Battery
The CPU-1440-Breakout board contains a lithium non-rechargeable battery. Do not short circuit
the battery or place on a metal surface where the battery terminals could be shorted. When
disposing of the board or battery, take appropriate care. Do not incinerate, crush or otherwise
damage the battery. The battery is inserted in a socket and can be replaced with a 3.0V Lithium
CR2032 Coin Cell.
Packaging
Please ensure that, should a board need to be returned to Eurotech, it is adequately packed,
preferably in the original packing material.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
The CPU-1440 is classified as a component with regard to the European Community EMC
regulations and it is the user’s responsibility to ensure that systems using the board are
compliant with the appropriate EMC standards.
RoHS compliance
The European RoHS Directive (Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances –
Directive 2002/95/EC) limits the amount of 6 specific substances within the composition of the
product.
A full RoHS Compliance Materials Declaration Form for the CPU-1440 is included as Appendix
B – RoHS Compliance, page 27. Further information regarding RoHS compliance is available
on the Eurotech web site at www.eurotech.com.

Getting started with your board
Once you have a working CPU-1440 system, you can start adding other peripherals to enable
you to start development. This section helps you through setting up and using peripherals and
some of the features of the CPU-1440 board.
The CPU-1440 board is based on the Phoenix / General Software Embedded BIOS to provide
support for the board as standard. BIOS defaults have been selected to enable the board to
operate with a minimal number of devices connected. If you want to change the defaults
settings, you can use the BIOS setup program.
The setup parameters can be stored in Flash device and retained when the power is switched
off.
Connecting a flash or hard disk drive
The CPU-1440 board provides a single primary IDE controller, with a 44-way 2mm header
(JP11) to connect one or two external IDE devices.
The BIOS detects the IDE devices during the POST processes and configures the hardware
correctly. The BIOS allows either a master or a slave device to be the boot device. It also allows
the manual selection of transfer modes (Fast PIO, and up to UDMA-2).
Connecting a PS/2 keyboard and mouse
A PS/2 keyboard and mouse is supported on a 10-way header (JP9). Suitable cable and
breakout board are provided in the development kit. The PS/2 interfaces are made available on
the CPU-1440 breakout board through the PS/2 MiniDIN connectors.
See page 21 for connector details.
Using the battery
The external battery connection is provided on a 10-way connector (JP12). The battery is
provided in the CPU-1440 development kit.
Using the serial interfaces
The four serial port interfaces are fully PC compatible. They are decoded at standard PC
address locations. PC applications can use these ports without any special configuration.
COM1 is a RS232 interface, supported on a 9-way 1.25mm header (JP6). Suitable cable is
provided in the development kit to enable the standard 9-way D-type male header.
COM2 is a TTL interface, supported on a 10-way 2mm header (JP7). Suitable RS232 adapter
board and the breakout board are provided in the development kit.
COM3 and COM4 are TTL interfaces, supported on a 20-way 2 mm header (JP3).
Suitable RS232 adapter boards and the breakout board are provided in the development kit.

Using the parallel port interface
The parallel port interface is fully PC compatible. It is decoded at standard PC address
location. It is supported on a 20-way 2mm header (JP8). Suitable cable is provided in the
development kit to enable the standard 26-way D-type female header.
See page 21 for connector details.
Using the LVDS flat panel interface
The CPU-1440 board provides a single channel LVDS LCD display interface on a 26-way
2mm header (JP4). See page 20 for connector details. A breakout board is provided in
the development kit. The maximum resolution is 1280x1024. The display type can be
selected from the BIOS setup.
The backlight power supply and control must be provided externally. The breakout board
performs this.
Using the TFT flat panel interface
The CPU-1440 board provides a TFT LCD display interface on a 30-way 1mm FPC
header (JP1). See page 19 for connector details. The maximum resolution is 1280x1024.
The display type can be selected from the BIOS setup.
The backlight power supply and control must be provided externally.
Using the analogue VGA interface
The CPU-1440 board provides an analogue VGA display interface on a 10-way header
(JP2). See page 19 for connector details. This can be used to directly interface to
analogue VGA displays with a resolution up to a maximum of 1280x1024. A suitable
cable and the breakout board are provided in the development kit to enable the standard
high density D-sub female header.
Using the USB ports
The CPU-1440 board provides four user accessible USB 2.0 ports. They are available on
2 headers (JP5 ports 0/1, JP4 ports 2/3). See page 20 for connector details. Power
supply on JP5 does not provide a power switch, it must be added externally. The USB
ports are available on the breakout board on standard type-A connectors. Adapter boards
are also available in the development kit. The OS boot from USB mass storage is NOT
supported.
Using the Ethernet interface
The CPU-1440 board provides one 10/100 Ethernet port, available on a 10-way header
(JP10), see page 22 for connector details. A suitable adapter board and breakout board
are provided in the development kit, they contain a standard RJ45 connector.

Expansion buses
PC/104-Plus bus interface
The PC/104-Plus bus interface supports PCI local bus compatible peripherals, as defined
in the PCI local bus specification revision 2.2. This version of the PCI bus is intended as a
32-bit running at 33MHz (as specified in the PC/104-Plus specification version 2.0).
A standard stack through connector for the PCI bus (4x30-pin, 2mm pitch) is used for this
interface. See page 19 for connector pin details.
The CPU-1440 board supplies the 3.3V and VIO pins with a 3.3V voltage. Total
connected boards consumption must be less than 2.5A.
+12V is only available if it is supplied to the PC/104 bus stack. -12V and -5V are not
available, if you require it, it must be supplied directly to the PC/104-Plus Stack.
PC/104 bus interface
PC/104 bus interface supports 16-bit ISA compatible peripherals.
Standard 64+40 way 0.1” stack-through connectors are used. See page 19 for connector
pin details.
If you are using a PC/104 card that requires +5V, this is automatically supplied via the
PC/104 header. If necessary, +12V, -12V and -5V must be supplied directly to the
PC/104 stack.
Graphics support
The integrated 2D/3D graphics controller includes a dedicated 8MB graphics memory,
and supports hardware accelerated graphics display and video processing capabilities.
The maximum resolution is 1280x1024.
The Silicon Motion SM722 controller provides:
an analogue VGA interface on a 10-pin header (JP2). See page 19 for analogue
VGA connector details.
a single channel 18-bit LVDS interface on a 26-pin 2mm header (JP4). See page
20 for connector details.
a 18-bit TFT interface on a 30-pin FPC header (JP1). See page 19 for TFT
connector details.
a PAL or NTSC compatible composite TV output on a U-FL coaxial header.
USB support
The CPU-1440 supports up to four USB 2.0 high-speed root ports. USB 2.0 allows
transfers up to 480 Mb/s.
USB ports are available on connectors JP4 and JP5. Common modes chokes coils are
added to the USB data lines to improve signal integrity. Power distribution switches are
used for USB ports 2-3 to provide 500 mA current-limited power supply. It must be added
externally for ports 0-1.
USB boot is not supported.

Ethernet interface
A 10/100 Ethernet interface (MAC and PHY) is available on the CPU-1440 board, implemented
in the Vortex86DX processor. It provides a standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet interface for
100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T applications (802.3, 802.3u). Magnetics are included.
Ethernet interface is available on a 10-way header (JP10). See page 22 for connector details.
IDE support
The parallel ATA/IDE interface is routed to a 44-pin header (JP11) on the CPU-1440 board. It
supports only the primary channel, with one master and one slave device.
PIO modes 0-4, Multi-word DMA modes 0-2 and Ultra DMA modes 0-2 are supported.
A common application is to connect this interface to a 2.5-inch ATA/IDE disk drive. For
connector details, see page 22.
SPI flash drive
The CPU-1440 board integrates a 2MB bootable SPI flash drive. It is recognized by the BIOS
and can be used to store a small DOS application.
Serial ports
The CPU-1440 provides four 16C550-compatible serial ports. It supports up to 115Kbaud data
rates and 16-byte send/receive FIFO’s. RS-485 auto-direction flow control is supported on
COM3 and COM4.
Serial port 1 is made available as a full RS-232 interface supporting all modem control lines.
Serial ports 2-4 are TTL ports with all modem control lines. Serial port 1 is available on a 9-pin
header JP6, serial port 2 on a 10-pin header JP7, and serial ports 3-4 on a 20-pin header JP3.

Parallel port
The CPU-1440 provides one XT/AT compatible parallel port. It supports the PS/2 type bi-
directional parallel port (SPP), the enhanced parallel port (EPP 1.7 and 1.9), and the extended
capabilities parallel port (ECP) modes. It is available on a 20-pin header JP8, see page 21 for
connector details.
Watchdog
The CPU-1440 provides a watchdog function, with a fixed 100ms refresh time. It is enabled and
refreshed with an I/O write access at port 702h. It can be disabled at any time with an I/O write
access at port 302h. If the watchdog is not refreshed after having been enabled, a hardware
reset is generated.
I2C
A 3.3V signaling (5V-tolerant) I2C interface is provided on the 10-pin header JP12. For
connector details see page 22. This interface is compliant with V2.1.

Power requirements
The CPU-1440 board operates from +5V (+/-5%) power input. All other supply rails are
generated on-board.
An external coin cell battery input is available through a 10-way header (JP12, see page
22).
Power consumption
The power consumption of the CPU-1440 board is 3W typical.
Mechanical
The CPU-1440 board is based on the PC/104 form factor standard. Mechanical drawings
are shown on the following page.
