Pleasefollowtheseimportantinstructionswhileusingyourunit:

1.Makesureyouuseespressostylegroundsintheespressomaker.

2. Before removing any of the parts and accessories, make sure the power button is off with

the light ring unlit and unplug the unit. Allow the appliance to cool.

3.Thelockingleverinthelockedposition“

at any time.

4.Usecautionwhenremovingtheportalter.Themetalpartsmaystillbeveryhot.There

maybehotwateroatingontopofthelter.Holditbyitshandletodisposeofthe

brewed espresso grounds.

5.Ifespressodoesnotappear,theportalterisblocked.Turnofftheapplianceandallow

ittocooldown.Theespressobeansmighthavebeengroundtoonelyanditmaybe

causingthis.Seethe“problemsandsolutions”section.

6. To clean the steam wand, place a pitcher or large cup with water under the steam wand.

Makesurethetipofthesteamwandissubmergedinliquidbeforepressingthesteam

”onandturningthesteamdialclockwiseforsteam.Froththewaterfor

approximately 15 seconds then wipe the steam wand, sleeve and tip clean.

CLEAN YOUR ESPRESSO MAKER BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

MakesureyourrstcupofespressoisasgoodascanbebycleaningyourVillaWare

™

EspressoMakerbeforeitsrstuse.Followthesesimplesteps:

1. Makesuretheunitisoffandunpluggedfromtheelectricaloutlet.

2. Firstremoveandthenwashthewaterreservoiranditslid,theportalter,ltersand 

tamper in a mixture of mild detergent and water. Rinse each thoroughly and place them

 backontotheunit.Refertotheinstructionsbelowon“BREWINGESPRESSO”before 

 removingthelterandportalter.

3. Tocleantheinsideoftheappliance,followstepslistedin“BREWINGESPRESSO” using

 wateronly.Donotimmersetheapplianceinwaterorattempttoreachanyofits 

internal parts.

PRIME THE PUMP BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Run a thirty second steam cycle using the following instructions:

1.PushthePowerbutton

” on lighting the amber ring.

2. Placeacupunderthesteamwand.

3.PresstheSteambutton“

+

”. The amber light ring will illuminate.

4. Turn the steam dial clockwise to activate some steam.

5. Wait thirty seconds and press the steam button “

+

” to stop the cycle.

ATTENTION: IFYOUAREPLANNINGTOMAKECAPPUCCINO,PLEASEREFERTO

THENEXTSECTION“PREPARINGCAPPUCCINO.”

1. Makesuretheunitisswitchedoffandunplugged.

2. Fillthereservoirwithwaterusingacontainer(Figure1)orbyremovingitandusingthe

faucet(Figure2).Ifyouhaveremoveditfromtheunit,makesuretoplaceitbacktightly

intoposition.Fillthereservoirwiththedesiredamountofwaterensuringitranges

withinthe“MIN”and“MAX”markingsonthereservoir.Neverusewarmorhotwater

tollthewaterreservoir.

3. Closethewaterreservoirlid.

4. Plugthepowercordintoanelectricaloutlet.

5. Pressthepowerbutton

“

+

” to turn the unit on. The unit will start the heater warm-up

cycle.The light ring around the power button will illuminate to show that the unit is on

and will pulse until the appropriate temperature is reached before returning to a steady

light. The unlock icon

” of the lever will light up if lever is in the unlocked position.

6. Placethedemitasse(s)onthecupwarmerontopoftheunittoheat.

7. Slidethelterreleasebuttonbackwards(Figure3)andplacethedesiredlterinthe

portalter. Onceinplace,releasethebuttontolockthelterinplace(Figure4).To

ensurethelterissecurelyinplace,turntheportalterupsidedown.

8. Filltheselectedlterwithnegroundespressooranespressopod.Cleananyexcess

espressogroundsfromtherimoftheportalterasthiswillensuretheportalterts

properlyintothePortaSlideSystem.Tamporcompressespressogroundsusingthe

tamperasshownbelow(Figure5).Donotoverllpastthemaxlllineasthismight

causecloggingoroverow.

9. SlidetheportalterintothePortaSlideSystemuntilittstightlyintoplaceandisush

withtheunit(Figure6).

12.Takethedemitasse(s)fromthecupwarmerandplaceundertheportalter.Ifyouare

brewingtwodemitasses,placethetwosmallcupsundertheportalterensuringeach

one is directly under one of the two spouts.

13. Turn the dial to select the espresso function; manual, single or double shot.

14.PushtheBrewbutton“

” to begin brewing. The light ring will illuminate and remain

steady until the end of the cycle. If the heater temperature has not been reached, the

amberlightringsofthePowerandBrewButtonswillpulseinsynchronization.Ifthe

lever is not in the locked position, the espresso function will not start and the unlock

iconlightwillash.Ifsettomanualmode,thecentrebuttonwillhavetobepushedto

stop the brewing process.

15. The machine will automatically stop after the brew cycle is complete unless it is in the

manualmode“

+

”.Inmanual,thebrewbutton“

+

” needs to be pressed to stop the

brewcycle.Pressingthebrewbutton“

+

”willcancelanycycleinprocess.Oncethe

cycle is off, the amber light will turn off.

Themanualmodecanbeusedtopreparestronger(lesswater)orweaker(more

water)espressoaccordingtoyourpreference.Tomakethestrongestespresso,usethe

doubleshotlterinthemanualmode“

+

”.

CAUTION: DO NOT LEAVE THE UNIT UNATTENDED WHILE USING THE

MANUAL FEATURE SINCE THE BREWING PROCESS MUST BE STOPPED

MANUALLY. THIS WILL AVOID OVERFLOW, SPILLAGE AND POTENTIAL

HAZARDS AND DAMAGES.

16. After the unit has cooled down, push the lever up to the unlocked position

removetheportalter.Turntheportalterupsidedown,taptoloosentheespresso

groundsanddiscard(Figure9).Slidethelterreleasebuttonbackwardstoreleasethe

lter.Rinseboththelterandportalterwithwater.

17. If you wish to brew additional espresso, repeat the

process.

18. If not preparing cappuccino, turn the unit off by pressing the power button “

+

” and

then unplug the unit.

PREPARING CAPPUCCINO

Cappuccinoisespressotoppedwithsteamedandfrothedmilk.Frothingmilkforcappuccino

takespractice.Donotbediscouragedifitisnotperfectthersttime.Themilkshouldbe

halfsteamed(bottomofpitcher)andhalffroth(topofpitcher).Itmaytakeafewtimes

before you perfect this process.

Forbestresults,werecommendfrothingthemilkinaseparatepitcherandpouringthemilk

intoyourespresso.Themilkandpitchershouldbecold.Donotuseapitcher,whichhas

just been washed in warm water . We also recommend a stainless steel frothing pitcher and

a beverage thermometer, if you own one, for preparing the best froth and steamed milk.

1.Makesurethewaterreservoirislledwithcoldwater.Neverusewarmorhotwaterto

llthewaterreservoir.

2.Fillasmallstainlesssteelorceramicpitcherabout1/3 full with cold milk and set next to

machine. Skimmed or semi-skimmed milk will be the easiest to froth.

3.Youarenowreadytofrothandsteamyourmilk.Placeapitcherunderthesteamwand

so the tip is immerged about 1.25cm.Turnthesteamdialto“

+

” and then press the

buttontostartfrothing“

+

”. The light ring around the steam button will illuminate and

remain on until the button is pressed again to stop the frothing process. The steam dial

can be turned clockwise for steam. The tip of the steam wand should be slightly angled

andneartheedgeofthepitchertocreatemilkcirculation.Microbubblesshouldbe

forming. If large bubbles are appearing, move the tip until the bubbles become smaller.

4.Continuefrothinguntilthemilkhasalmostdoubledinvolume;milkwillbearound40°C.

Slowlymovethetipofthesteamwandlowerintothemilktocontinuesteaming.Milk

shouldbeheatedtobetween60°Cand71°C.Donotoverheatasthiscanscaldthemilk.

Withthesteamwandstillimmersed,pressthesteambutton“

+

” to end the process.

The light ring around it will turn off. Tap the bottom of the pitcher to eliminate large,

unwanted bubbles.

5.Nowitistimetomakeespresso.Followtheinstructionsinthe“BREWINGESPRESSO”

section to prepare the espresso.

6.Youarenowreadytomakecappuccino.Itis1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3

frothedmilk.Pourtheespressointoacupandusingaspoonorspatulatoblockthe

frothedportion,addthesteamedmilktotheespresso.Finally,spoononthefrothedmilk.

7.Followtheinstructionsinthe“instructionsforuse”sectiontoushoutanyresidualmilk

from the steam wand. It is important to properly clean your steam wand and wash its

sleeve and tip after each use to ensure it continues to work properly.

8.Pressthepowerbutton

” to turn unit off and unplug the power cord and allow the

machine to cool. Empty the water reservoir.

DAILY CLEANING

1.Pushtheleveruptotheunlockedposition

” and then press the power button to turn

off the unit. Unplug it from the electrical outlet. Ensure appliance is cool.

2.Thesteamwandmaystillbehot.Donottouchitwithyourhandsuntilithascooled.

Remove the steam wand sleeve and wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth. Rinse the

steam wand sleeve in warm water. Unscrew the steam wand tip and clean the steam

wand valve with a needle or toothpick.

3.Discardtheremainingwaterbyremovingthereservoirandturningitupsidedownover

the sink. It is recommended to empty the water reservoir between uses.

4.Thewaterreservoir,lters,tamper,portalter,driptrayanddripgrillcanbewashedwith

soapy water.

CAUTION: Donotimmersetheapplianceinwater.

5.Wipehousingwithasoftwetcloth.Donotuseabrasivecleanersorscouringpads,as

theywillscratchthenish.

6.Theportaltermaybestoredintheunit.

REGULAR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Descaling your VillaWare

™

Espresso Maker

Mineraldepositsthathavebuilt-upintheEspressoMakerwillaffecttheoperationofthe

appliance.YourEspressoMakermustbedescaledwhenyoubegintonoticeanincrease

inthetimerequiredtobrewespresso,orwhenthereisexcessivesteaming.Youmayalso

notice build up of white deposits on the surface of the brew head.

Thefrequencyofcleaningdependsuponthehardnessofthewaterused.Thefollowing

table gives the suggested cleaning intervals.

TO DESCALE WATER RESERVOIR:

1.Makesurethepowerbuttonisoffandthatthepowercordisdisconnectedfromthe

electrical outlet.

2.Fillthereservoirwithfresh,undilutedwhitehouseholdvinegar.Ifdesired,acommercially

available product for descaling espresso machines may be used following the

manufacturer’sinstructions.

3. Allow appliance to sit overnight with the vinegar solution in the water reservoir.

4.Discardvinegarbyremovingthereservoirandturningitupsidedownoverthesink.

5.Rinsethewaterreservoirthoroughlywithtapwaterbyllingtankhalffullwithwaterand

then pouring the water back out into the sink, repeating this step twice.

TO DESCALE INTERNAL PARTS:

1.Makesureyoudescaletheinsideofthewaterreservoirrstbyfollowingthe“Descaling”

steps above.

2.Makesureallcontrolsareintheoffpositionandthepowercordisdisconnectedfrom

theelectricaloutlet.Fillthereservoirwithwhitevinegarabovetheminimumlevel.

3.InserttheportalterwithlterintothePortaSlideSystem.Placeajarontopofthedrip

grillandundertheportalter.

4.Plugthepowercordintotheelectricaloutlet.

5.Pressthepowerbuttontoturntheuniton.Thelightringwillashuntilthebrewing

temperature is reached and then it will be steady on. Turn the espresso brewing dial to

cleaning cycle mode and then press the brewing start button. The cycle will automatically

stop and the amber light will turn off.

6. To clean the steam wand internally, place a cup with cold water under the tip of the

steam wand. Insert the steam wand into the water and press the steam start button

Turn the dial to release steam. Let the steam come out for a few minutes before pressing

thesteambutton“

” to stop the steam cycle. This will clean any residue left in the

steam wand. Repeat the process as needed.

7. Repeat steps 1 – 6 as necessary using only tap water to rinse any remaining traces of

vinegar out of the machine.

tips and suggestions

THE ESPRESSO GROUNDS

Thebeansshouldbefreshlyground,darkroastedanddesignatedforespresso.Pre-ground

beanswillonlyretaintheiravourfor7–8days,providedtheyarestoredinanairtight

containerandcool,darkarea.Donotstoreinarefrigeratororfreezer.Wholebeansare

recommended to be ground just before use. Espresso beans stored in an airtight container will

keepupto4weeksbeforetheybegintolosetheiravour.Espressopodsmayalsobeused.

THE GRIND

This is a vital step in the espresso making process and takes practice. The espresso ground

mustbeofanegrind.

• Thecorrectgrindshouldlooklikesalt.

• Ifthegrindistoone,thewaterwillnotowthroughtheespressogroundsevenunder

pressure.Thesegrindslooklikepowderandfeellikeourwhenrubbedbetweenngers.

• Ifthegrindistoocoarse,thewaterowsthroughtheespressogroundstoofast, 

 preventingafullavouredextraction.

Besuretouseaqualitygrinderforuniformconsistency.Ovalshapedgrindersarenot

recommended because the grind is not consistent.

CUPS/DEMITASSES

Fortheoptimumespressotemperature,werecommendkeepingyourcups/demitasses

warm on the cup warming tray on top of your VillaWare

™

EspressoMaker.
