Replace the image transfer unit
and transfer roller
The following set of instructions can be
used to replace just an image transfer
unit, just a transfer roller, or both.
We recommend that you replace both
the image transfer unit and the transfer
roller at the same time.
1 Turn off and unplug the printer.
2 Open the front cover.

3 Remove all the print cartridges.
a Pull up slightly on the
handhold.
b Pull the cartridge straight out
and use the handle to lift it off
the guides.
c Set the cartridge on a clean
flat surface in the upright
position.
Warning! When removing cartridges
from the printer, be careful not to touch
the photoconductor on the bottom of the
cartridge.
4 Release the latches to open the
multipurpose feeder all the way.

Remove the old image transfer
unit.
a Raise the lever to unlock the
image transfer unit.
b Pull down on the handle.

c Slide the unit out of the
machine and place it on a
clean flat surface.
6 Perform one of the following:
If you are not installing a new
transfer roller, skip to step 10.
If you are installing a new
transfer roller, go on to step 7.
7 Remove the old transfer roller
from the printer.
a Using your left hand, reach
through the side of the printer
and hold up the transfer roller
wheel.
b Using your right hand, reach
through the front of the printer
and lift the end of the transfer
roller away from the back of
the printer.
c Pull the roller completely out of
the printer and discard it.

Unwrap the new transfer roller.
Remove and discard all the
packaging.
9 Install the new transfer roller.
a Using your left hand, reach
through the side of the printer
and hold up the transfer roller
wheel.
b Using your right hand, insert
the small end of the new roller
into the notched opening at the
front of the printer.
c Push the roller down into place
at the back of the printer.
d Lower the transfer roller wheel
until it gently rests against the
new roller.

10 Remove the new image transfer
unit from the box and the plastic
shipping bag.
Save all the packing materials.
Follow the recycle instructions in
the box.
11 Remove the protective cover and
detensioner. Gently but firmly pull
the material up and off the new
unit.
Warning! Do not touch the transfer belt
when removing the protective cover and
detensioner. Touching the transfer belt
will damage the image transfer unit.

12 Insert the new image transfer unit.
a Align the guides with the
insertion grooves.
Warning! Do not touch the transfer belt
when installing the unit. Touching the
transfer belt will damage the image
transfer unit.

b Push the handle up using both
hands, and gently slide in the
new unit. It will drop down
when correctly seated.
c Lower the lever to lock the
image transfer unit into place.

Return the multipurpose feeder to
its working position.
14 Reinstall all the print cartridges.
a Align the cartridge with its
color-coded opening.
b Slide it into the printer. The
cartridge drops slightly and
clicks into place.
15 Close the printer door.
If the door doesnt close
completely, reopen the door and
press in firmly on the cartridges to
make sure they are fully seated.
16 Plug the printer in and perform
one of the following:
If you only installed a transfer
roller, turn the printer back on.
The printer returns to a Ready
state. You are now finished.
If you installed a new image
transfer unit, continue with step
17.
17 Set the alignment for the new
image transfer unit.
a On the printer operator panel,
press and hold
Select and
Return while turning the printer
on.
b When Performing Self
Test appears, release the
buttons.

c When Config Menu appears,
press
Select.
d Press Menu until you see Align
ITU, and then press
Select. A
test page prints.
e Look at the test page and
select the best color alignment
for each of the twelve settings.
For each setting (A-L) you
must select a value in the
range of -7 to +7 to nearest .5
increment. For example, for the
A Alignment you may find your
value to best at 4.5.
f Press Menu until you see A
Alignment, and then press
Select.
g Press Menu until you see the
value you want to use (for
example, 4.5), and then press
Select. Saved briefly appears.
h When you see B Alignment,
repeat steps a through g. You
must do this for all twelve
settings.
i When you have finished with L
Alignment, press
Go to return
the printer to Ready status.
