INTRODUCTION

The Master Ball Joint Service Kit is for most GM, Ford and Dodge 2- and 4-

wheel drive pickups, vans and SUVs from 1997 to present.

SAFETY

WARNING! Read and understand all instructions before using this tool. The

operator must follow basic precautions to reduce the risk of personal injury

and/or damage to the equipment.

Keep this manual for safety warnings, precautions, operating or inspection

and maintenance instructions.

WORK AREA

1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean, well-

lit and free of distractions. Place lights so you are not working in a

shadow.

2. Keep anyone not wearing the appropriate safety equipment away from

the work area.

3. Store unused tools properly in a safe and dry location to prevent rust

or damage. Lock tools away and keep out of the reach of children.

PERSONAL SAFETY

WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by the Canadian

Standards Association (CSA) or American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side protection

for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply with CSA Z94.3-07

or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work performed.

2. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety

googles, as the work can create chips, abrasive or particulate matter.

3. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or to

reduce the effects of tool vibration.

a. Do not wear gloves when operating a tool that can snag the

material and pull the hand into the tool.

4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.

5. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance in

the work environment.

6. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury from

falling objects.

7. Wear the appropriate rated dust mask or respirator.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS

Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid

1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs,

alcohol or medications.

2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the

moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.

3. Do not overreach when operating a tool. Proper footing and balance

enables better control in unexpected situations.

1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for a specific

function. Do not modify or alter this tool or use it for an unintended

purpose.

2. Do not use the tool if any parts are damage broken or misplaced. Repair

or replace the parts.

3. Apply direct pressure to the part. Applying off-center force against a

part can cause binding and damage the part or tool.

4. Do not use the Ball Joint Kit to compress springs or any other item that

could disengage and cause a potential hazard.

5. Do not allow lubrication on the contact points of the ball joint press

components and the part. This may cause the press to slip while under

pressure. This may cause an injury or damage the tool or part.

6. Consult and follow the part manufacturer instructions for the part

being serviced.

UNPACKING

WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace the

missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in a malfunction

and personal injury.

Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.

Make sure that all items in the Identification Key are included.

OPERATION

Letter references in parenthesis (A) refer to the included Identification Key.

PREPARING THE PART

Worn ball joints and pins are likely to be covered in rust and grime that

makes it difficult to remove them.

1. Clean the part with a brake and part cleaner, applying the cleaner to

the point where metal touches metal.

2. Use a wire brush to remove deposits. Wipe clean or use compressed air

to remove the debris.

3. Apply a coating of penetrating oil to the connection point and let it sit

for several minutes.

4. Remove the snap ring and grease fitting from the ball joint. Not all ball

joints will have these.

5. Screw the jack screw (D) into the ball joint press (A).

6. Follow the steps for each type of task.

REMOVING A BALL JOINT

1. Select a tube or cup that will fit over the ball joint without touching it.

Make sure there is an opening in the bottom to accommodate the ball

joint’s stud.

2. Place the receiving tube over the ball joint so it rests against the

control arm. It must not touch the ball joint.

a. Place the removal adapter (B) onto the end of the tube.

3. Position the ball joint press with the jack screw against the flat top of

the ball joint.

4. Rotate the jack screw with a wrench until contact is made with the

vehicle’s control arm. Check that the receiving tube and ball joint are

aligned. Adjust if necessary.

5. Continue tightening until the ball joint pops out of the control arm.

6. Loosen the jack screw and remove the ball joint from the ball joint

assembly. Set the assembly components aside.

INSTALLING A BALL JOINT

A ball joint with a grease relief may require specific mounting orientation.

Check the ball joint to see if there are mounting instructions.

1. Clean the control arm’s inner opening of debris and grime. Apply a light

lubricant.

2. Press the ball joint into the control arm opening until snug. Make sure

it is straight.

3. Insert the installation adapter (C) into the inner top opening of the ball

joint press.

4. Place a tube that rests on the ball joint socket’s raised ridge during

installation.

5. Place a receiving cup that will fit over the flat top of the ball joint

without touching the sides.

6. Position the ball joint press so the jack screw is sitting against the cap.

7. Hold the tube and adapter in place while tightening the jack screw

with a wrench.

8. Tighten the jack screw until the ball joint no longer moves. Confirm the

raised ridge is touching the control arm.

9. Install the snap ring and grease fitting.

REMOVE AND INSTALL BRAKE ANCHOR PINS

1. Remove all lock rings, washers and bushings from the brake anchor

pin.

2. Determine if a receiving tube is required. The ball joint press can rest

directly on the brake spider if the pin diameter is narrower than the press

opening. Select a tube that will rest on the brake spider if the pin is wider.

3. Position the ball joint press over either end of the brake spider. Place a cap

on the receiving tube and insert the removal adapter on the jack screw.

4. Tighten the Jackscrew until the anchor pin pops out.

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for each pin.

6. Install the new brake anchor pin by fitting it into the brake spider. You

may need to hold it in place while tightening the jack screw.

7. Position the ball joint press so the top is resting against the brake

spider. Place the installation adapter onto the jack screw.

8. Tighten the jack screw until the pin is fully inserted into the brake

spider.

9. Reinstall the lock ring, washer and bushings.

DISASSEMBLE / ASSEMBLE A U-JOINT

1. Remove all external and internal lock rings or from the universal joint.

2. Position the ball joint press so the top opening is touching the

universal joint yoke without blocking the bearing cap.

3. Turn the jack screw until it touches the bearing cap on the other side.

4. Tighten the jack screw and push the U-joint down until the bearing cap

is dislodged.

5. Flip the U-joint over follow steps 2 to 4 to remove the bearing cap on

the other side.

6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 if there are four bearing caps in the universal joint.

7. Remove the universal joint and clean the yoke.

8. Insert a new U-joint and place the first bearing cap onto the top yoke

opening.

9. Position the ball joint press with the jack screw resting on the bearing

cap. The bearing cap must be as straight as possible to avoid damage

or deformation.

10. Turn the jack screw until the cap is fully inserted past the recess for the

lock ring. Repeat with the same process with all other bearing caps.

11. Replace all external and internal lock rings.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient, easier

to control and will have fewer problems.

2. Inspect the tool components periodically. Repair or replace damaged or

worn components. Only use identical replacement parts when servicing.

3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.

5. Keep the tool clean, dry and free from oil/grease at all times.

6. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important

information. If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for

replacements.

WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the tool. An

improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the user and/or others.

CLEANING

Clean the tool with a damp cloth and mild detergent or solvent. Re-lubricate

the jack screw threads after cleaning.

LUBRICATION

Inspect and lubricate the tool when required. Lubricate the jack screw

threads periodically. Only use light oil to lubricate the tool. Other lubricants

may not be suitable and could damage the tool or cause a malfunction

during use.

DISPOSAL

Recycle a tool damaged beyond repair at the appropriate facility.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does not function

properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so, have a qualified technician

service the tool.

INTRODUCTION

La trousse d’entretien pour joints à rotule principale convient à la plupart

des camionnettes, fourgonnettes et VUS GM, Ford et Dodge à 2 et 4 roues

motrices de 1997 jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

SÉCURITÉ

AIRE DE TRAVAIL

1. Travaillez dans un environnement de travail sécuritaire. Gardez votre

aire de travail propre, bien éclairée et exempte de toute distraction.

Placez les lampes de façon à ne pas travailler dans l’ombre.

2. Assurez-vous que les personnes qui ne portent pas léquipement de

sécurité approprié ne se trouvent pas à proximité de laire de travail.

stabilité et léquilibre au sein de lenvironnement de travail.

6. Portez des chaussures à embout dacier ou à coquilles dacier pour

éviter les blessures aux pieds dues à la chute dobjets.

7. Portez un masque antipoussières ou un appareil respiratoire

nominal approprié.

PRÉCAUTIONS PERSONNELLES

Gardez le contrôle de loutil, de vos mouvements et de lenvironnement de

travail pour éviter les blessures ou le bris de loutil.

1. Nutilisez pas loutil si vous êtes fatigué ou s ous leffet de drogues,

dalcool ou de médicaments.

2. Évitez de porter des vêtements ou des bijoux pouvant se prendre dans les

pièces mobiles dun outil. Gardez les cheveux longs recouverts ou attachés.

Une stabilité et un équilibre appropriés sont nécessaires afin davoir un

meilleur contrôle en cas de situations inattendues.

4. N’utilisez pas la trousse pour joint à rotule pour comprimer des ressorts

ou tout autre élément qui pourraient se dégager et causer un danger

potentiel.

5. Aucune lubrification ne doit se faire sur les points de contact entre

les composants de pression de joint à rotule et la pièce. Cela peut

causer le glissement de la presse pendant qu’elle est sous pression.

Cela pourrait entraîner des blessures ou des dommages au niveau

de l’outil ou de la pièce.

6. Consultez et observez les instructions du fabricant de la pièce en

réparation.

DÉBALLAGE

UTILISATION

Les lettres de référence entre parenthèses (A) se rapportent à la clé

didentification comprise.

PRÉPARATION DE LA PIÈCE

Les joints à rotule et les axes usés peuvent être couverts de rouille et de

souillures les rendant ainsi difficiles à retirer.

1. Nettoyez la pièce avec un nettoyant pour frein et pièces, en appliquant

le nettoyant au point de contact où le métal touche le métal.

2. Utilisez une brosse métallique pour retirer les dépôts. Nettoyez en

essuyant ou utilisez de l’air comprimé pour détacher les débris.

3. Appliquez une couche d’huile pénétrante aux points de contact et

laissez travailler pendant plusieurs minutes.

4. Retirez l’anneau élastique et le raccord de graissage du joint à rotule.

Ces éléments ne se retrouvent pas sur tous les joints à rotule.

5. Vissez la vis de calage (D) dans la presse pour joint à rotule (A).

6. Procédez de la façon décrite pour chaque type de tâche.

RETRAIT D’UN JOINT À ROTULE

1. Sélectionnez un tube ou une coupelle pouvant s’installer au-dessus du

joint à rotule sans le toucher. Assurez-vous qu’il y a une ouverture dans

le bas pour le goujon de joint à rotule.

2. Positionnez le tube récepteur au-dessus du joint à rotule en l’appuyant

contre le bras de suspension. Il ne doit pas toucher au joint à rotule.

a. Placez l’adaptateur de retrait (B) sur l’extrémité du tube.

3. Positionnez la presse pour joint à rotule avec la vis de calage contre le

dessus plat du joint à rotule.

4. Tournez la vis de calage à l’aide d’une clé jusqu’à ce que le contact soit

établi avec le bras de suspension du véhicule. Vérifiez que le tube

récepteur et le joint à rotule sont alignés. Réglez au besoin.

5. Continuez de serrer jusqu’à ce que le joint à rotule sorte du bras de

suspension.

6. Desserrez la vis de calage et retirez le joint à rotule de l’assemblage de

joint à rotule. Rangez les composants d’assemblage.

INSTALLATION D’UN JOINT À ROTULE

Un joint à rotule avec un bouchon de trop-plein de graisse peut exiger une

orientation de montage spécifique. Vérifiez si des instructions de montage

s’appliquent au joint à rotule.

1. Éliminez les débris et les saletés accumulés dans l’ouverture interne du

bras de suspension. Appliquez un lubrifiant léger.

2. Pressez le joint à rotule neuf dans l’ouverture du bras de suspension

jusqu’à ce qu’il soit bien inséré. Assurez-vous qu’il soit droit.

3. Insérez l’adaptateur d’installation (C) dans l’ouverture supérieure

interne de la presse pour joint à rotule.

4. Placez un tube s’appuyant sur le bord en saillie de la douille de joint à

rotule pendant l’installation.

5. Positionnez une coupelle réceptrice qui s’ajustera sur le dessus plat du

joint à rotule sans toucher les côtés.

6. Positionnez la presse pour joint à rotule de manière à ce que la vis de

calage soit appuyée contre le chapeau.

7. Tenez le tube et l’adaptateur en place pendant l’étape de serrage de la

vis de calage à l’aide d’une clé.
