SMOOTHIE MAKER OPERATION
The Blender Solution
5500 mixing jar is conveniently marked to create perfect
smoothies for two or four servings. To make a frozen blend of your favorite
healthy foods, follow these simple steps:
1. Assemble the smoothie maker blade base (with dispensing valve) onto the
glass mixing jar and place the stir stick through the hole in the center of the
lid of the glass mixing jar.
2. Add Liquids: Add any combination of liquid ingredients up to the LIQUIDS
mark. Liquids include any soft ingredients such as fruit, milk, fruit juice,
herbal supplements or yogurt in any combination that you think would be
tasty. We are, of course, partial to the Back to Basics
®
smoothie mixes,
which quickly and easily make three delicious 8-ounce smoothies.
3. Add Ice: Add ice or frozen ingredients until the total level reaches the
FROZEN INGREDIENTS line on the side of the mixing container. Frozen
ingredients include ice, frozen fruit, frozen yogurt, ice cream, etc.

FOOD PROCESSOR OPERATION
To use your Back to Basics
®
Food Processor Attachment, the bowl must be
assembled properly and the blade and lid must be locked into place. Begin by
assembling the Food Processor by following the simple steps below.
1. Hold the gear base in one hand and the food processor goblet
handle in the other. Twist the goblet clockwise onto the gear box base.
2. Place the gear box base with the goblet onto the motor base.
3. Place the chopping blade over the shaft in the goblet. The chopping blade
should slide easily to the bottom of the
goblet. The lower blade will
almost touch the bottom.
4. Place food to be processed in the goblet. To attach the lid, place lid on gob-
let and turn the lid clockwise until it fi ts into position. Lid lock must click into
locked position prior to use. The food processor will not start until gear box
base, goblet and lid are locked into place. If you have trouble fi tting the lid
onto the goblet, turn chopping blade hub slightly and replace lid.
5. Always use food pusher to guide food through the feed tube. Never
use your fi ngers or other utensils.
6. Plug your Blender Solution
5500 into an electrical outlet. Push the ON but-
ton to start chopping or pureeing. While the food processor can be used at
LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH speed, the MEDIUM speed is recommended
for all food processing jobs. It is recommended that one hand be placed on
the food processor lid while in use to provide unit stability.
If the machine doesn’t start, make sure it is plugged in and the
goblet and lid
are properly locked into place.
If the blades will not spin, unplug the unit and
re-assemble the food processor following all of the assembly steps above.
Always unplug the unit before placing hands into the
goblet.
NOTE: The motor base will start, but the chopping blade will not turn until
the gear box, goblet and lid are locked into place and assembled properly.
7. To turn motor off, press the OFF button.
8. For pulse-chopping, press the PULSE button the desired number of times
until the ingredients reach the desired consistency. The motor will run as
long as you hold the PULSE button down. The motor stops when you
release the PULSE button. For best results, allow enough time between
pulses to allow the food to fall back to the bottom of the food processor
goblet.
OPERATION
12
USING THE BLENDER SOLUTION
5500
TO CHOP,
PURÉE AND MIX
1. Assemble the food processor following the steps on page 12.
2. Cut food into approximately
3
4" pieces. You will get a more even chop if you
start with pieces that are all the same size.
3. Place food into food processor goblet with the chopping blade already in
place. You can put up to 1 cup of food in the goblet bowl at a time. Chop
food in batches if you want to process more than 2 cups at a time.
4. Place lid on goblet and lock it in place. Insert food pusher. It is
recommended that one hand be placed on the food processor lid while in
use to provide unit stability. Press and release the PULSE button two to
three times, allowing the food pieces to drop to the bottom of the goblet
between pulses.
5. Watch the food closely. With pulse/chopping technique you can get an
even chop without over-processing the food. Check texture of the food by
looking through
goblet.
6. For a coarse chop, pulse only a few times.
7. If you want a finer chop or puree, press the ON button and let machine run
continuously at MEDIUM speed until the food is chopped as fine as you
want it. Check frequently through clear lid or
goblet to avoid chopping
too fine. Use a plastic spatula to scrape down any pieces that stick to the
inside of
goblet. (Make sure that the unit is unplugged before placing any
utensils inside the
goblet.)
8. You may add liquid or small pieces of food to the machine while the unit is
running by dropping the food through open feed tube located on the food
processor lid.
Below are some conditions that affect your results:
Size of pieces you put in bowl – all should be about the same size.
Amount of food you process – don’t add too much.
Type of processing you choose – continuous or pulse/chopping.
REMOVING PROCESSED FOOD
OPERATION
13
1. Before removing processed food, press the OFF button and wait for the
blade to stop spinning. Unplug the unit and then remove the lid by turning it
counter-clockwise. Never try to remove the lid and the
goblet together; this
can damage the food processor.
2. Be careful not to let the chopping blade fall out of goblet as you empty it.
To prevent the blade from falling out, carefully remove the blade by lifting
up on the plastic hub before attempting to pour out the processed food,
or hold the top of the blade in place with your finger while pouring out
processed food.
3. To
lift the goblet off of the motor base, turn the handle of the goblet
counter-clockwise and lift the
goblet straight up.
NOTE: Occasionally, a piece of food may become wedged between the blade
and the
goblet. If this happens, unplug the unit, remove the lid, lift the blade out
carefully and remove the wedged piece. Empty the
goblet, reinsert the blade,
replace the ingredients and lock the lid into place.

3
4-inch pieces. Put up
to
1
2 pound of meat in goblet. Pulse
or run motor continuously until de-
sired consistency is reached. Check
texture every 2 or 3 seconds to avoid
over-processing.
Bread, crackers or cookies Break into 1-inch pieces and
process continuously until
desired texture is reached.
Hard cheese If cheese is too hard to cut with a
knife, don't try to chop it in the food
processor as it may damage the
blade. (Do not attempt to chop par-
mesan cheese in the food processor.)
Cut cheese into
1
2-inch pieces. Pulse
motor until the desired consistency
is reached. You may chop cheese as
coarse or as fi ne as you want. Simply
run machine longer for fi ner chop. Do

TIPS FOR GENERAL OPERATION
Thicker Smoothie: To make a thicker smoothie, add more frozen
ingredients.
Thinner Smoothie: To make a thinner smoothie, add more liquid
ingredients.
Always add liquid ingredients to the mixing jar fi rst and then add
remaining ingredients. This will prevent excessive wear on the
motor and ensure that the ingredients are properly blended.
Cut harder foods (e.g. cheese) into approximately 1 inch cubes to
achieve better chopping results.
The stir stick may be used to assist in making frozen drinks or for
blending any other types of ingredients. When the stir stick is not being used,
be sure to place the clear lid cover over the hole in the center of the lid.
When chopping dry ingredients such as bread crumbs, nuts, spices,
etc., make sure that the mixing jar (or food processor goblet)
and blade bases are completely dry.
The PULSE button should be operated in short bursts. As the PULSE
button is pressed and released, the blades should stop rotating
between pulses.
Do not attempt to mix or knead heavy dough, mash potatoes or
beat egg whites.
Do not over-blend foods. Most ingredients should be properly blended or
chopped in seconds. Do not operate motor base for longer than 3 minutes
at a time.
If the motor stalls, turn off and unplug the unit. Remove a
portion of the ingredients before attempting to continue.
Do not add boiling liquids to the glass mixing jar or food processor goblet.
If the blades on the food processor attachment do not spin, unplug
the unit and re-assemble the food processor by foll
owing the steps listed on
page 12.
