Read First

Follow these steps for a successful installation of your DBM.

1. If required, install new firmware. The

3600 Series DBM Option Installation

Instructions

, Document No. 3610-A2-GZ52, explains how to determine whether it is

required.

2. Verify the switch settings on the DSU.

3. Install the DBM according to the

Installation Instructions.

4. If you installed new firmware, use the Confg menu from the front panel to load the

factory default settings. The DSU will not function properly unless the factory

default settings are reloaded.

5. Enter and save directories, phone numbers, and SPIDs you will use. Make and

save any other configuration changes required for your network.

6. Power up the DSU and test the DBM.

Powering Up the DBM

When you apply power to the DSU, the DSU performs a

power-up routine and:

 Determines what hardware options are installed, including a DBM.

 Automatically runs a Device Test (Devic) on the DSU and each installed hardware

option.

 Displays the following messages on the Diagnostic Control Panel (DCP):

The power-up routine can be:

 Initiated using the Reset selection in the Control branch.

 Disabled with the PowerOnTst General configuration option.

The front panel’s:

 Red Alarm LED is lit if the DBM is a digital DBM and not connected to the network.

 LCD displays health and status information with DBM F:No Signal to indicate a

facility alarm.

Continue if you receive successful messages. If a Fail message appears or a hardware

option does not appear:

 Refer to your User’s Guide for power-up messages and basic procedures for

changing configuration options and troubleshooting.

 Refer to your DBM Supplement for DBM troubleshooting and messages.

NOTE:

For a 4-wire Switched 56 DBM, if power is applied and a Device Test run while a

network loopback is in progress, the test is aborted and the LCD displays Abrt.

Rerun the Device Test.

Network Verification Testing

Perform verification testing after any installation. Refer to the

Network Verification

Testing

section of the User’s Guide for more information.

After confirming the network connection for a DSU equipped with a DBM:

 Procedure

1. Use the →Dial command to establish a dialed call to the remote unit in order to:

— Enter remote phone numbers in dial backup directory for both ends.

— Verify the DBM can establish a call.

The DBM will be in Standby mode.

2. Verify that Auto Answer (AutoAnswer) is enabled and that the other end answers.

3. Use the →Dial command to switch the data to the DBM circuit by entering Dial

Backup mode. Ensure that both DSUs have been configured correctly.

4. Perform a Digital Test (DT) on both the DBM and the circuit from the Test branch.

After testing the network:

1. Drop the backup (DrBU).

2. To automatically initiate a call if there is a DDS network failure, enable Auto Backup

(AutoBckup) and the Backup Directory numbers.

3. Enable V.13 Signaling (V.13 Signl) for switched-carrier operation emulation. This

applies to a multipoint circuit.

Top-Level Menu

Access to all functions from the standalone or shared DCP begins at the top-level

menu, the head of the menu hierarchy. Press the

key from anywhere in the menu

to return to the top-level menu.

Backup Branch

The Backup (Bckup) branch controls operation of the dial backup feature for DBMs.

The Bckup selection is used to control DBM dialing from the front panel. References to

a DBM also apply to a DBM-D, DBM-I, DBM-S, or DBM-V where the Primary Core

configuration option is set to Yes and the DSU is disabled.

Test Branch

The Test branch provides extensive testing capabilities for the DSU, DDS circuit, DBM,

and backup circuit. When the tributary receives a test request from the control, any

locally initiated test in progress on that core is aborted. The Abort selection allows you

to abort a test that is running. The DSU is not allowed to run any other test until the test

in progress is aborted or completed.

Control Branch

Software and Firmware Version Control

Verify that the control and tributary DSUs have the same firmware version or that the

control has the highest firmware version. If the control DSU software version is less

than 7.24 but greater than 1.10, changes are required to the DSU tributary firmware

version in the General configuration options.
