Intended use
Your BLACK+DECKER™ GM1800 Grill
has been designed for grilling food as
described in this manual. This appliance
is intended for indoor household use only.
This appliance is not intended to be used in:
• staff kitchen areas;
• in shops, offices and other working
environments;
• farm houses;
• by clients in hotels, motels and other
residential type environments;
• bed and breakfast type environments or
any other non-household environments.
The appliance is not intended to be
operated by means of an external timer or
separate remote-control system.
Safety instructions
• Warning! When using mains-powered
appliances, basic safety precautions,
including the following, should always
be followed to reduce the risk of fire,
electric shock and personal injury.
• Read all of this manual carefully before
using the appliance.
• The intended use is described in this
manual. The use of any accessory or
attachment or the performance of any
operation with this appliance other than
those recommended in this instruction
manual may present a risk of personal
injury.
• Retain this manual for future reference.
Using your appliance
• Always take care when using the
appliance.
• Do not use the appliance outdoors.
• Do not operate the appliance if your
hands are wet. Do not operate the
appliance if you are barefoot.
• Guide the power supply cord neatly
so it does not hang over the edge
of a work top and cannot be caught
accidentally or tripped over.
• Never pull the power supply cord to
disconnect the plug from the socket.
Keep the power supply cord away from
heat, oil and sharp edges.
• If the power supply cord is damaged
during use, disconnect the appliance
from the power supply immediately Do
not touch the power supply cord before
disconnecting from the power supply.
• Disconnect the appliance from the
power supply when not in use and
before changing accessories, cleaning,
etc.
Safety of others
• This appliance is not intended for use
by persons (including children) with
reduced physical, sensory or mental
capabilities, or lack of experience and
knowledge, unless they have been given
supervision or instruction concerning
use of the appliance by a person
responsible for their safety.
• Children should be supervised to
ensure that they do not play with the
appliance.

After use
• Switch off, remove the plug from the
socket and let the appliance cool down
before leaving it unattended and before
changing, cleaning or inspecting any
parts of the appliance.
• When not in use, the appliance should
be stored in a dry place. Children should
not have access to stored appliances.
Inspection and repairs
• Before use, check the appliance for
damaged or defective parts. Check for
breakage of parts, damage to switches
and any other conditions that may
affect its operation.
• Do not use the appliance if any part is
damaged or defective.
• Have any damaged or defective parts
repaired or replaced by an authorised
repair agent.
• Before use, check the power supply
cord for signs of damage, ageing and
wear.
• Do not use the appliance if the power
supply cord or mains plug is damaged
or defective.
• If the power supply cord or mains plug
is damaged or defective it must be
repaired by an authorised repair agent
in order to avoid a hazard. Do not cut
the power supply cord and do not
attempt to repair it yourself.
• Never attempt to remove or replace any
parts other than those specified in this
manual.
Additional safety instructions for
food grills
Warning! Do not place near a hot Gas or
electric oven.
• Never use the appliance near to walls or
curtains.
• Switch off and unplug the appliance
when not in use, or before cleaning.
• The appliance must always be attended
during use.
• Do not immerse the appliance, cord set
or plug in any liquid.
• The temperature of accesible surfaces
may be high when the appliance is
operating and for some time afterwards.
• Use of oven gloves is recommended
during cooking.
Caution: The contents of a toasted
sandwich may be very hot.
• Do not move unit during use. Allow to
cool first.
• Clean the cooking plates after each use.
• Do not use this appliance to defrost
frozen food.
• Do not use metal implements on the
non-stick surfaces.
• Always use a drip tray to collect excess
fats & oil.
• Always use on a clean work surface and
clean the surface thoroughly after use.
• Always use the appliance on a flat
surface.

• Place the appliance on a stable, heat-
resistant surface in a well-lit, ventilated
area.
• Do not use this appliance out of doors.
• Allow the appliance to cool before
storing.
Electrical safety
Before use, check that the mains voltage
corresponds to the voltage on the rating
plate.
This product must be earthed.
Always check that the mains
voltage corresponds to the
voltage on the rating plate.
• Appliance plugs must match the outlet.
Never modify the plug in any way.
• Do not use any adapter plugs
with earthed (Class 1) appliances.
Unmodified plugs and matching outlets
will reduce the risk of electric shock.
• This product is not intended to be
operated by means of an external timer
or separate remote-control system.
• To avoid the risk of electric shock, do
not immerse the cord, plug or appliance
in water or other liquid.
Extension cables & class 1 product
• A 3 core cable must be used as
your tool is earthed and of class 1
construction.
• Up to 30m (100 ft) can be used without
loss of power.
• If the supply cord is damaged, it must
be replaced by the manufacturer or an
authorised BLACK+DECKER Service
Centre in order to avoid a hazard.

Use
Warning! Let the appliance work at its own
pace. Do not overload.
Note: When using the appliance for the
first time, wash the two grill plates (1) with
warm water and mild detergent and oil
them with a small amount of vegetable oil.
Warning! While using for the first time, a
very small amount of smoke may be visible;
this is just caused by the warming up of
some components.
• Place the appliance on a flat surface.
Note: Make sure the plate is closed during
pre-heating phase.
• Before use, mount the grill plates (1):
• Insert the plates in the bottom and top
part of the grill by aligning the rear slots
with the hooks on the appliance body,

turning them slightly until they click into
place (Fig. B).
Note: The two plates are interchangeable.
• Plug appliance in. The power on light
(3), signaling heating phase, and the
temperature light (5) will go on.
• Turn the dial (2) to select the required
temperature setting.
• Make sure the plate is closed during
pre-heating phase.
• The light (5) turns off when the
appliance reaches the temperature
(after about 3 minutes) and is ready for
use.
Note: The light (5) goes on again when the
required temperature decreases.
• Place a small container under the drip
nozzle (6) of the lower plate for any
cooking fat residue.
• Open the upper plate by means of the
handle (4).
• Place food to be cooked on the bottom
plate. Always place food towards the
back of the plate.
• Lower the upper plate by means of the
handle (4) and lean it on food in an
uniform manner.
• For cooking, 5-8 minutes are required.
Time depends on personal tastes, food
type and thickness.
• After cooking, turn the appliance
off by rotating the dial (2) to the
minimum temperature position, unplug
the appliance and raise the plate as
described above. Remove food by
means of a plastic spatula.
Various types of grilling
Grilling with closed plates (Fig. B)
• This appliance is ideal for grilling meat,
toasts, etc.
• After having selected the thermostat
level (2), allow the grill to warm up with
the plates (1) closed (Fig. B) and when
the light (5) goes off, put the required
food on the lower plate.
• At the optimal temperature for the food
to be grilled, close the upper plate until
it touches the food.
• After cooking, turn the appliance
off by rotating the dial (2) to the
minimum temperature position, unplug
the appliance and raise the plate as
described above. Remove food by
means of a plastic spatula.
Cooking position with open plates
(Fig. C)
• This position is suitable to grill fish,
skewers, vegetables etc. and offers a
very wide surface.
• Ideal for cooking various kinds of food
at the same time.
• After having selected the thermostat
level (2), allow the grill to warm up
with the plates (1) closed (Fig. B) and,
when the light (3) goes off, lift the top
part through the handle (4) until it is in
vertical position, pull it upwards to the
side guide end, move it slowly forwards
and then lower it completely.
• This allows you to obtain the widest
grilling surface (Fig C).
• Place food to be grilled on the
open plates and refer to the above
instructions for grilling settings.

Oven grilling position (Fig. D)
• This appliance is ideal for warming up
food.
• After having selected the thermostat
level (2), allow the grill to warm up with
the plates (1) closed (Fig. A).
• When the light (5) goes off, lift the top
part through the handle (4) until it is in
vertical position, slightly move the grill
forwards up to the guide end, and then
lower it completely on the food to be
warmed up, obtaining the position with
the top plate raised and parallel to the
bottom one (Fig. D).
Warning! Do not touch appliance housing
and hot plates to prevent burn hazard.
Warning! Never use metal kitchenware to
prevent the nonstick coating of cooking
plates from being damaged.
Approximate Cooking Times
Sandwich 6-8 min.
Sausages/wurst 8-10 min.
Fish 8-10 min.
Toast 3-6 min.
Meat 5-7 min.
Skewers 8-10 min.
Cleaning and maintenance
Warning! Before performing any
maintenance:
• Switch off and disconnect from the
mains supply.
• Wait for the appliance to completely
cool down.
Warning! The grill must not be immersed in
water or other liquid.
• Position the appliance with the plates
(1) completely open (Fig. C).
• Remove them by releasing them from
fittings situated on the appliance.
• Thoroughly wash the plates (1) with
warm water and a normal, non-abrasive
mild detergent.
• Re-mount the interchangeable plates
(1) on the appliance Owing to the rear
supports, the grill may be also stored in
vertical position in the minimum space.
• Wipe external surfaces with a damp
cloth.
Mains plug replacement
If a new mains plug needs to be fitted:
• Safely dispose of the old plug.
• Connect the brown lead to the live
terminal in the new plug.
• Connect the blue lead to the neutral
terminal.
• If the product is class I (earthed),
connect the green/yellow lead to the
earth terminal.
Note! If your product is class II double
insulated (only 2 wires in the cord set),
no connection is to be made to the earth
terminal.
Follow the fitting instructions supplied with
good quality plugs.
Any replacement fuse must be of the same
rating as the original fuse supplied with the
product.

Separate collection. This product
must not be disposed of with normal

or if it is of no further use to you, do

The warranty is valid within the territories of
the Member States of the European Union
and the European Free Trade Area.
If a Black+Decker product becomes
defective due to faulty materials,
workmanship or lack of conformity, within
24 months from the date of purchase,
Black+Decker warranty to replace defective
parts, repair products subjected to fair wear
and tear or replace such products to ensure
minimum inconvenience to the customer
unless:
• The product has been used for trade,
professional or hire purposes;
• The product has been subjected to
misuse or neglect;
• The product has sustained damage
through foreign objects, substances or
accidents;
• Repairs have been attempted by
persons other than authorised repair
agents or Black+Decker service staff.
