Grundfos MP 204 is a control cabinet with built-in motor protection. It is used to start and stop the pump according to an input signal. The input signal comes either from a main control system, like a PLC, or from a simple input, like a switch.
The built-in MP 204 motor protector will ensure long service life of the pump. The MP 204 protects the motor electrically by disconnecting the motor/pump when one of the trip limits has been reached. It protects the motor electrically and mechanically by monitoring:
- Overload
- Underload (dry running)
- Temperature
- Missing phase
- Phase sequence

These installation and operating instructions apply to the
Grundfos Control MP 204. The Control MP 204 is a control
cabinet with built-in motor protection.
These instructions only focus on the Control MP 204 control
cabinet.
The main components in the control cabinet are an MP 204 motor
protector and an IO 112 input/output module. These components
are not described in detail in this manual.

3. Identification

4. General description
The Control MP 204 is used to start and stop the pump according
to an input signal. The input signal comes either from a main
control system, like a PLC, or from a simple input, like a switch.
The built-in MP 204 motor protector will ensure long service life of
the pump.
The Control MP 204 is also available with an IO 112 input/output
module that can be set up to start and stop the pump in a filling or
draining application using an analog sensor signal.
The Control MP 204 can optionally be fitted with a Grundfos
CIU unit (Communication Interface Unit) enabling transmission of
the collected data.
4.1 Variants
• Control MP 204
• Control MP 204 with IO 112.
When using an MP 204 and an IO 112, it is possible to start and
stop the pump in a filling or draining application.
For additional protection an electrode relay can be used to detect
dry running (optional).
The Control MP 204 is set up and tested from factory.
See installation and operating instructions for the MP 204 and

4.1.1 Modules
The Control MP 204 is designed to protect the motor both
electrically and mechanically.
MP 204 motor protector
The MP 204 protects the motor electrically by disconnecting the
motor/pump when one of the trip limits has been reached.
Trip conditions:
• Overload
• Underload (dry running)
• Temperature (Tempcon sensor, PTC/thermal switch and
Pt sensor)
• Missing phase
• Phase sequence
• Overvoltage
• Undervoltage
• Power factor (cos φ)
• Current unbalance.
Sensor inputs and output:
• Pt100 or Pt1000 sensor
• PTC sensor.

IO 112 module
The IO 112 module can be used as an additional protection
module or as a control module that can start and stop the pump
according to an analog level signal.
IO 112 offers the following functions:
• dry-running protection (additional protection)
• start and stop of a pump in a filling application with a high-level
alarm
• start and stop of a pump in a draining application with
a dry-running alarm.
Sensor input and output:
• 1 analog input (4-20 mA)
• 1 alarm output.
For setting of application and start/stop limits, see installation and
operating instructions for IO 112.
For each input trip, conditions for warning and alarm can be set.

4.2 Operation
The Control MP 204 is operated via a "H-O-A" switch in the
cabinet front or via a PC.
Manual (H)
In Manual mode, the pump must be started with the start button
in the cabinet front and stopped with the stop button.
Auto (A)
In Auto mode, a pressure switch, float switch or a signal from
a PLC system, is used to control the pump.
4.3 Configuration
A specially developed PC Tool (PC Tool Water Utility) can be
used to configure and subsequently monitor and maintain
the system.
See section 6.1.2 Configuration by PC Tool and PC Tool Link.
The MP 204 must be configured using the hand-held Grundfos
R100 remote control or the PC Tool Water Utility.
The IO 112 module is factory-set to analog input.

4.4 Communication
If a Grundfos CIU unit (Communication Interface Unit) is to be
used, we recommend you to fit it according to the wiring diagram
and layout supplied with the Control MP 204.
Both variants can be extended with external communication.
5. Control modes
This section describes the available control modes:
• Switch control
– Control MP 204 controlled by a pressure switch
– Control MP 204 controlled by a float switch
– Control MP 204 controlled by a main control system,
for example a PLC.
• Analog control
– Control MP 204 with IO 112.
5.1 Switch control
Control MP 204 controlled by a pressure switch
If a constant pressure is required in a closed system, a pressure
switch can be connected. The pressure switch starts and stops
the pump according to the setpoint (pressure).

If a constant level is required in an open system, a level sensor
(float switch) can be used to start and stop the pump.
When pumping into an open tank or reservoir, the pump is started
when the water level reaches the start level. The pump is stopped
when the stop level is reached.
The digital sensors used must be potential-free switches,
like a float switch or a similar type of switch.

The Control MP 204 is controlled by a main control system
(pos. 1, fig. 6), i.e. a PLC or a similar main control system.

5.2 Analog control
Control MP 204 with IO 112 (filling application)
The application is controlled by an analog level sensor.
The pump is started when the minimum water level is reached.
The pump is stopped when the maximum water level is reached.
The pump can be protected using an electrode relay for
dry-running protection.
If the water level continues to rise, IO 112 will generate an alarm
which is available on the GENIbus.

The analog level sensor is used to start the pump when drainage
of water is required, for example in a pit or dewatering system.
The pump is started when the maximum water level is reached.
The pump is stopped when the minimum water level is reached.
The pump can be protected using an electrode relay for
dry-running protection.
If the water level continues to drop, IO 112 will generate an alarm
which is available on the GENIbus.

6. Installation
Before installation, check the following:
• Do the specifications of the Control MP 204 correspond to
the order?
• Are all visible parts intact?
The Control MP 204 is operated either manually or via remote
access from Grundfos Remote Management (optional).
See section 7.2 Operation.
6.1 Mechanical installation
This section describes the mechanical installation of the
Control MP 204 and also provides general advice about how to
position sensors in order to achieve stable, measured values.
The control cabinet is designed for indoor use, either mounted on
a wall or directly on the floor.
6.1.1 Sensors
To ensure correct and reliable operation of the Control MP 204,
it is important to position and install sensors according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
6.1.2 Configuration by PC Tool and PC Tool Link
For the physical connection between the PC and the Control
MP 204, a Grundfos PC Tool Link is used. This converts the
RS-485 used by the Control MP 204 to USB used by the PC.
The PC Tool Link also provides a galvanic separation between
the PC and the Control MP 204.

Load the PC Tool Water Utility and configure the Control MP 204
direct on line, or upload a prepared configuration file to the
MP 204 and/or IO 112.
6.2 Electrical installation
The electrical connection should be carried out by an authorised
electrician in accordance with local regulations.
The electrical installation must be carried out according to
the wiring diagram supplied with the Control MP 204.

The following sections are intended as a supplement to the wiring
diagram supplied with the Control MP 204.
The terminal blocks (X0 to X5) are shown in section
6.2.1 Terminal blocks.
Warning
Installation and operation must comply with local
regulations and accepted codes of good practice.
Caution
If the Control MP 204 is to be used outdoors,
the control cabinet must be located in a separate
cabinet which is suitable for outdoor use.
Caution
The sensors must always be correctly sized for the
range they are to measure. If the sensor is too small,
it will be saturated. If it is too big, the resolution of the
sensor signal will be too poor.

7. Commissioning
Checks before first startup:
• The pump is installed according to the installation and
operating instructions for the pump type used.
• The MP 204 is configured either by use of a PC Tool or with
the Grundfos R100 remote control according to the
motor/pump specifications.
• IO 112 is configured either manually on site or by use of a PC
Tool.
7.1 Startup
The motor current and trip conditions have to be adjusted and
set during startup. To adjust and set these parameters,
see installation and operating instructions for the MP 204.
Check that the motor/pump operates according to the
specifications.
7.1.1 Soft starter
If the Control MP 204 incorporates a soft starter (SS), the trip
delay of the MP 204 must be set higher than the ramp-up time set
in the soft starter.
7.2 Operation
For manual operation, both variants of the Control MP 204
incorporate the following components in the cabinet front.
• Main switch
• "H-O-A" selector switch
• Stop button with red indicator light (alarm)
• Start button with green indicator light (pump running).

The Control MP 204 operates with two sets of limits:
• a set of warning limits
• a set of alarm limits (trip).
If one or more of the warning limits are exceeded, the motor
continues to run.
If one of the alarm limits is exceeded, the motor is stopped.

This product or parts of it must be disposed of in an
environmentally sound way:
1. Use the public or private waste collection service.
2. If this is not possible, contact the nearest Grundfos company
or service workshop.

Grundfos MP 204 is a control cabinet with built-in motor protection. It is used to start and stop the pump according to an input signal. The input signal comes either from a main control system, like a PLC, or from a simple input, like a switch.
The built-in MP 204 motor protector will ensure long service life of the pump. The MP 204 protects the motor electrically by disconnecting the motor/pump when one of the trip limits has been reached. It protects the motor electrically and mechanically by monitoring:
- Overload
- Underload (dry running)
- Temperature
- Missing phase
- Phase sequence
