Introduction
Cleaning upholstery fabrics requires an understanding of
the fabric you are going to clean and how it reacts to a
cleaning chemical. The upholstered furniture (see picture)
will have one of the following covers…
Each of these fabrics may be wet-cleaned using water-
based cleaning agents although the degree of moisture
required to carry out the cleaning will differ due to the
absorbency of the fabric.
Always test chemicals in an inconspicuous place before
cleaning commences.
Requirements
Appropriate cleaning chemicals.

• Wool ‘X’
• Fabric restorer
• Rinse ‘X’
• Leather cleaner

Substrates
Polyurethane transfer coating on a weft
knitted Polyester Fabric Waterproof fabric - Polyester Fibres
electrostatically glue-bonded onto a prewoven
backing material
• Vacuum item thoroughly
• Mist on appropriate cleaning chemical
• Agitate using sponge/soft brush
• Rinse with plain water through extraction machine
• Towel off using Terry towelling to remove residual moisture
and to set pile
DO NOT USE ANY SOLVENT-BASED PRODUCTS ON THE
SUBSTRATE
• Vacuum item thoroughly
• Mist on appropriate cleaning chemical
• Agitate using sponge/soft brush
• Rinse with plain water through extraction machine
• Towel off using Terry towelling to remove residual moisture
and to set pile
DO NOT USE ANY SOLVENT-BASED PRODUCTS ON THE
SUBSTRATE
Duratek fabric
• Vacuum item thoroughly
• Mist on appropriate cleaning chemical
• Agitate using sponge/soft brush
• Rinse with plain water through extraction machine
• Towel off using Terry towelling to remove residual moisture
and to set pile
Vinyl fabric
• Vacuum item thoroughly
• Mist on appropriate cleaning chemical
• Agitate using sponge/soft brush
• Towel off with Terry towelling and lukewarm water
• Allow to dry
• Apply leather cleaning cream, evenly working into fabric
• Allow to dry
• Buff with clean dry duster
A regular cleaning programme should be put into place to prevent the buildup of harmful substances such as body fats, airborne
pollutants etc. that, apart from being unsightly and unhygienic, can cause premature degradation of the fabric.
