CAUTION: Read this safety and operating manual and your tractor owner's manual

before you use the PTO-Driven 4.5" Wood Chipper. Become familiar with the operation and

service recommendations to ensure the best performance from your machine.

WARNING: This is a high-powered machine, with moving parts operating with high

energy at high speeds. You must use proper clothing and safety gear when operating this

machine to prevent or minimize the risk of severe injury. This machine can crush, grind, cut,

and sever parts of your body if they enter the inlet or discharge area of your chipper.

DANGER: The warnings, cautions, and instructions in this manual cannot cover all

possible conditions or situations that could occur. It must be understood by the operator that

common sense and caution are factors that cannot be built into this product, but must be

· Do not attempt to operate the chipper until you have read and understood the owner's

· THIS MACHINE IS DESIGNED TO OPERATE AT 540 RPM ONLY! Never operate the

machine at a faster speed; doing so can cause serious injury to the operator or bystanders

And could cause damage to the machine that is not covered under warranty.

· Make sure that the guards and chip deflectors are installed properly before operating the

Chipper.

· Avoid accidental starting. Disconnect the chipper from the PTO when not in use and

when moving the chipper to another work area.

· Never leave the chipper unattended when it is running.

· Check the chip pile to see if the blades need to be serviced. Long slivers in the chip pile

are a good indication that the blades are dull and need sharpening.

· Never use the machine without first ensuring that all the guards and shields are in place,

including the chipper hopper, discharge chute, and blowback shield.

· Never transport the chipper with the PTO engaged and the flywheel turning.

· The chipper must be operated with the weight of the machine on the ground. Operating the

machine while it is off the ground can result in injury to yourself or others, or can damage to

the machine, which is not covered under warranty.

· Keep in mind that the operator is responsible for accidents to other people, their property,

and themselves.

· Your PTO-Driven 4.5" Wood Chipper is a tool, not a toy. Exercise extreme caution at all

Times.

This machine is designed to chip wood. Do not use it for any other purpose.

· Know how to stop the chipper quickly by disengaging the PTO and shutting down the

Tractor.

· Operate this machine on a level surface only. Never operate the unit on a slippery, wet,

muddy, or icy surface. Exercise caution to avoid slipping or falling.

· Keep a safe distance from the chipper hopper to avoid accidental bounce back of any \

Material.

· When feeding material into the chipper hopper, be extremely careful that pieces of metal,

rocks, or other foreign objects are not included. This could result in personal injury or

damage to the machine.

· Whenever you leave the operating position or if you have to remove processed material,

leaves, or debris from the machine, always disengage the PTO, shut down the Tractor

engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop. Then

disconnect the PTO shaft from the Tractor. Wait an additional 5 minutes before removing

processed material, leaves, or debris from the machine.

· If the machine should start making an unusual noise or vibration, disengage the PTO

immediately, shut down the Tractor engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving parts to

come to a complete stop. Then disconnect the PTO shaft from the Tractor. Wait an

additional 5 minutes before inspecting the unit for clogging or damage. Vibration is

generally a warning that something is wrong with the machine. Clean and repair and/or

replace damaged parts.

· Never tamper with safety devices. Check that they are operating properly on a regular

Basis.

· Stay alert for potential hazards.

· Never carry passengers on the machine.

· Never overload or attempt to chip material beyond the manufacturer's specifications. This

could result in personal injury or damage to the machine.

· While using the PTO-Driven 4.5" Wood Chipper, don't rush. When in doubt, stop the

machine and take the time to check your surroundings.

· Never operate the machine when under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including

Medication.

· Use the machine during daylight hours.

· Keep all nuts and bolts tight and the equipment in good operating condition.

· Your PTO-driven 4.5" Wood Chipper is driven by a PTO shaft that transfers power from

your Tractor. A PTO shaft is extremely dangerous and can cause serious injury or death.

Read and understand all of the safety and operating instructions that came with your PTO

Shaft.

· No list of warnings and cautions can be all-inclusive. If situations occur that are not

covered by this manual, the operator must apply common sense. Always operate the

chipper in a safe manner.

PERSONAL SAFETY

DANGER: THIS IS A HIGH-POWERED MACHINE WITH MOVING PARTS. Operate the

machine safely. Unsafe operation can create a number of hazards for you, as well as

anyone else in the nearby area.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

· Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a chipper. Do

not use the chipper while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or

medication. A moment of inattentiveness may result in serious personal injury.

· Keep the decals in place and in good repair. The factory or your dealer will furnish new

decals upon request.

· Keep hair, hands, feet, and other extremities away from the hopper.

· Point the discharge chute away from doorways, sidewalks, or any areas where your view is

obstructed. The chute should be pointed downwind when possible to avoid getting dust in

your eyes, nose, and mouth.

· Safety equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, and a hardhat should be

used to reduce the chance of personal injuries.

· Always wear protective goggles or safety glasses with side shields while chipping

to protect your eyes from debris.

· Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing or jewelry, which can catch on moving parts or

the material fed into the chipper hopper.

· We recommend wearing gloves while chipping. Make sure the gloves fit properly and

do not have loose cuffs or drawstrings.

· Wear shoes with non-slip treads when using your chipper. If you have safety shoes,

we recommend wearing them. Do not use the machine while barefoot or wearing

Sandals.

· Wear long pants while operating.

· Use ear protectors or earplugs rated for at least 20 db to protect your hearing.

· Do not attempt alterations, repairs, or adjustments while the chipper head is turning.

Always disconnect the PTO and stop the motor.

· Never allow people who are unfamiliar with the instructions to use the chipper. Only

individuals who are familiar with these rules should use the machine.

· Never place your hands, feet, or any part of your body in the chipper hopper, discharge

opening, or near or under any moving part while the machine is running. Keep area of

discharge clear of people, animals, buildings, glass, or anything else that will obstruct

clear discharge and/or cause injury or damage. Wind can change the discharge direction,

so be aware.

· If it becomes necessary to push material into the chipper hopper, use a small diameter

stick, not your hands.

· Keep bystanders back 100 feet from the work area at all times. Wood chips exit the chipper

at great speeds. To be safe, do not operate the machine near small children or pets, and

never allow children to operate the chipper. Disengage the PTO and stop the Tractor

engine when a child or a pet is present.

· Never pass or stand on the discharge side of the machine when the Tractor engine is

running or the flywheel is turning.

WORK AREA

· Keep everyone, especially children, away from the area of operation. Anyone who has not

read this manual and received instructions from a qualified person should not be in the

area.

· Thoroughly inspect the area in which you will be working and remove all foreign objects.

Look for rope, wire, etc., and remove these objects before chipping. Inserting these

objects into the chipper hopper could damage the machine and/or cause injury.

· Never, under any conditions, remove, bend, cut, fit, weld, or otherwise alter standard parts

on the PTO-driven 4.5" wood chipper. This includes all shields and guards. Modifications

to the machine could cause personal injuries and property damage and will void your

Warranty.

STARTING THE CHIPPER

· The chipper is a flywheel-and-knife type of chipper, not a shredder. The blades actually

chip the limbs as they are fed into the head. The blades must be sharp to operate properly.

Dirt, rocks, nails, or other foreign material will shorten blade life.

· Before operating the chipper, review the machine checklist. After turning the chipper by

hand and making sure there are no obstructions in the head, start the Tractor and raise the

chipper until the PTO shaft is within 15 degrees of straight.

· Start the chipper slowly with the PTO engaged, and release the PTO

clutch slowly. Gradually increase speed until the Tractor PTO speed is

540 RPM.

OPERATION NOTES

· Only operate the PTO-Driven 4.5" Wood Chipper from the Operator Zones (on the

Opposite side of the discharge chute) shown in the Figure below.

· The material will feed into the head more easily if you start the pieces large end first. The

feed roll will fold branches as they are pulled into the hopper. Occasionally, a limb fork may

have to be cut to feed properly.

· If the material stops feeding, sometimes a little push on the long end of the limb will help.

· If the material stops the feed roll, release the feed roll clutch by stepping on the bar

beneath the hopper (See below picture). Hold the clutch in the disengaged mode, and pull

the material out of the hopper. Release the feed roll clutch and the feed roll will turn again.

· Watch the discharge chute while operating the unit. If the chips stop flowing, stop feeding

material into the unit by stepping on the bar beneath the hopper and pulling the material

from the hopper. Most of the time this will be enough to clear the chips out of the unit. If the

unit slows down noticeably, first shut off the PTO power, then the Tractor, and remove the

Key.

· With the PTO and the tractor turned off, unplug the head by turning it backwards by hand

with the discharge chute and top section of the wrapper off.

· Remove the chips from the top of the head. If this fails, remove the clean-out door, located

on the lower part of the front side-plate of the chipper below the main shaft, then work the

chips out of the case.

· Replace the clean-out door after all the chips are removed, being sure to use both the lock

washers and flat washers.

· Do not operate the unit without the guards in place.

Before stopping the chipper, be sure the all of the material is out of the head and out of the

feed roll.

· All of the material in the chute must be gone or the unit could jam on a small piece of

material. This can usually be cleared by turning the unit backwards by hand.

· ALWAYS disengage the PTO when leaving the Operating Zones or when moving the

Machine.

· Never move the Chipper while the PTO is turning.

· Always operate the Tractor PTO at 540 RPM when chipping.

PROCESSING MATERIAL

CAUTION: The Chipper is designed to accept wood only.

· The Chipper Knife mounted on a revolving flywheel turns branches fed into the Chipper

Hopper into "chips".

· Your PTO-Driven 4.5 Wood Chipper can process dry or green wood up to 4.5" in diameter.

· The Chipper will self-feed the wood once it contacts the knife edge so forcing the branches

into the Hopper is not necessary if the knife is sharp.

· Green wood will process quicker and easier than dry wood.

· Softwood processes easier than hardwood.

· Experience will teach you how different types of wood will chip and how fast you can

process them.

· When chipping branches, sometimes a tail will develop at the end of a branch. To avoid

this, rotate the branch while feeding it into the Chipper Hopper.

· Rotating the branch as you feed it into the machine will improve chipping performance.

· Use caution with small diameter green saplings and branches less than 2" in diameter.

Chip these grouped or bundled together to provide support. If the material is 2" or larger,

feed one at a time into the Chipper Hopper.

· Make sure the PTO-Drive 4.5" Wood Chipper finishes processing material in the Hopper

before disengaging the PTO and shutting the Tractor engine off.

· Do not force material into the Chipper. If the machine does not chip well, the Chipper Knife

may need sharpening or replacement, or the gap between the Knife and the Wear Plate

needs adjusting.

· NEVER THROW REMAINING STUBS OR KNOTS INTO THE CHIPPER HOPPER;

DAMAGE WILL RESULT.

· Extremely hard knots will not process very well. Feed them in slowly to reduce clogging.

Push any short stubs that have not self-fed through the chipper with the next branch to be

chipped.

· Cut the material to be chipped into manageable lengths of no more than five or six feet

before chipping.

· Overloading the chipper hopper will cause the rotor speed to decrease. If you hear the

engine RPM decreasing, stop feeding material into the chipper hopper until the engine has

returned to full speed.

TO FREE A JAMMED FLYWHEEL

CAUTION: Before performing any maintenance procedure or inspection on the chipper,

disengage the PTO, shut down the Tractor engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving

parts to come to a complete stop. Then disconnect the PTO shaft from the Tractor. Wait an

additional 5 minutes.

CAUTION: Never pry against the scroll weldment when removing the deflector or

discharge chute, or at any other time. This will cause damage to the machine.

CAUTION: Be certain the flywheel turns freely before trying to process more material

into the chipper hopper.

TO DISASSEMBLE

1.Disconnect the PTO Shaft.

2.Remove any material in the Chipper

Hopper.

3.Remove the two bolts and locknuts with

Wrench and then remove the access cover.

4.Check to see if the Flywheel and the Knife are clogged. If it is, clear it with a branch.

5.With a wooden stick, loosen and remove any material left in the Chipping Chamber and

make sure the Flywheel turns freely with the stick.

TO REASSEMBLE

1.Position the access cover onto the Chipper and secure with two bolts and locknuts using

Wrench.

2.Reconnect the PTO Shaft, start the Tractor engine and engage the PTO; allowing the

remaining material in the Chipping Chamber to discharge.

3.If the Chipping Chamber doesn't clear and the flywheel is still jammed, repeat the process.

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY

· Before transporting, be certain the chipper is correctly and securely attached to your

Tractor and the PTO safety chains are in place.

· Make sure the chipper is raised high enough to clear all obstacles during transportation.

· Never transport the machine long distances.

· Never allow anyone to ride on the chipper.

· Never transport anything on the machine.

· Never transport the chipper with the PTO engaged.

· Obey local, state, and federal regulations when transporting the machine on public roads

and highways.

· Factor in the added length of the chipper in driving situations, e.g., when turning, parking,

and crossing intersections.

· Adjust your speed for terrain and conditions.

· Use caution when backing or turning. Be aware of the large turning radius required with

The PTO-driven 4.5" wood chipper attached to your Tractor.

MACHINE ASSEMBLY

1. Set up the chipper stand plates and tighten 2. Put the body onto the stand and

the bolts; fix the lift arms(Part#13);

3. Attach the hopper assembly to the chipper;

4. Fix the chute stand and attach the discharge chute;

5. Attach the clutch bars to the chipper;

6. Attach the PTO shaft to the tractor and the chipper;

STEP1 Insert the Key into the 3-Point Hitch Drive Shaft of

the Chipper Align the Key Slot of the PTO Shaft with the Key

in the Shaft and slide it onto the Shaft.

NOTE: Do not allow the 3-Point Hitch Shaft to extend more

than 1/4" into the U-Joint. This will allow proper clearance to

STEP 2 Push in the PTO Shaft Spring Pin and slide the PTO

Shaft onto the Tractor Spline; Release the Spring Pin and

continue sliding the PTO Shaft on until the Spring Pin Pops out

and locks into the detent in the Tractor PTO Spline;

NOTE: Secure the PTO Shaft Safety Chains to stationary

parts of the Chipper Frame and Tractor to stop the Guard from

Turning;

MACHINE MAINTENANCE

CAUTION: Before performing any maintenance procedure or inspection on the chipper,

disengage the PTO, shut down the Tractor engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving

parts to come to a complete stop. Then disconnect the PTO shaft from the Tractor. Wait an

additional 5 minutes.

CAUTION: The service intervals shown are the maximum under normal operating

conditions. Increase maintenance frequency under extremely dirty or dusty conditions. See

the owner's manual that came with the Tractor and with the PTO shaft for specific Tractor

and PTO shaft maintenance.

BEFORE EACH USE

· Check General Equipment Condition.

· Check that the Flywheel turns freely (with a long stick only).

· Visually inspect Knife for damage.

EVERY 8-10 HOURS

· Check Knife and Wear Plate for Sharpness.

· Check Knife and Wear Plate Attachment Screws.

· Check Flywheel Bearing Collar Set Screws. · Check Knife to Wear Plate Gap.

· Lubricate Flywheel Bearings. · Lubricate PTO Shaft Grease Fittings.

· Lubricate PTO Sheave Bearings. · Check Belt Tension and Condition.

EVERY 18-20 HOURS

· Lubricate PTO Shaft Spline ends and center overlap.

EVERY 40 HOURS

· Inspect or replace Drive Belt.

GREASE FITTINGS

CAUTION: Over lubrication can damage the bearings.

1.Remove the Belt Cover

2. Wipe all dirt, etc., from the grease fittings with a clean cloth.

3. Grease with a flexible hose grease gun to each Bearing Grease Fitting.

4.Replace the Belt Guard.

REMOVING, REPLACING AND ADJUSTING THE CHIPPER KNIFE AND WEAR PLATE

CAUTION: Excessive vibration that will cause damage to the PTO-driven 4.5" wood

chipper.

Routinely check the wear plate for a sharp square edge. Using a rounded or chipped wear

plate will decrease performance and cause excessive vibration that will cause damage to

the PTO-Driven 4.5" Wood Chipper.

CAUTION: Before performing any maintenance procedure or inspection on the chipper,

disengage the PTO, shut down the Tractor engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving

parts to come to a complete stop. Then disconnect the PTO shaft from the Tractor. Wait an

additional 5 minutes.

1.Remove the two screws that secure the

Front Access Cover with a wrench and

remove the Access Cover.

2.Rotate the Flywheel with a long stick until

the Knife is visible.

3.If the Knife has visible nicks or damage it must be sharpened or replaced. Remove the dull

or damaged Knife and visually inspect the Flywheel Slot and Knife mounting area and be

sure they are clean and that the replacement Knife will be able to mount flush against the

Flywheel. Install a new or sharpened Knife as shown with the Knife edge facing up and

towards you. Finger tighten the screws and lock nuts to hold the Knife to the Flywheel.

4.If the Knife does not appear to have any damage, replace the Front Access Cover and

secure with two screws using a wrench.

Adjusting the Knife to Wear Plate Gap

The knife to wear plate gap is pre set at 1/8 - 3/16 (3-5mm) before leaving the factory. After

use for a period of time, the wear plate and knife will get wearing and so the gap will be

widened. To adjust the wear plate gap, loosen the nuts on the bolts of wear plate, so the

wear plate will move but still have a slight resistance. Now you can slide the wear plate up or

down (in or out) to achieve the correct gap setting. Adjust the wear plate to desired position

and then tighten the nuts. After that, reinstall the hopper assembly.

TROUBLESHOOTING

SYMPTOM

Flywheel won't turn.

The Belt frays or rolls over the Drive Pulley.

Chipping action seems too slow or flywheel

stalls.

The Belt burns.

The Flywheel won't turn.

The machine has excessive vibration.

When chipping, the log seems to

vibrate excessively and " hammers"

my hands.

PTO turns but the flywheel doesn't rotate. ·Loose Drive Belt; Replace Belt.

·Remove any built-up debris from the Chipper Hopper Inlet and

Discharge Chute.

POSSIBLE CAUSE/FIX

·The Flywheel may be jammed. Immediately disengage the PTO and

stop the Tractor engine. Remove any built-up debris from the Chipper

Hopper Inlet and Discharge Chute.

·Check the Drive Pulley alignment and adjust if necessary.

·Replace the Drive Belt or reinstall if the Belt has come off the pulleys.

·Turn the Flywheel with a wooden stick to be sure it turns freely. If the

Flywheel still won't turn, call us for assistance.

·The Drive Pulley groove may have a nick in it. File off any nicks on the

Pulley.

·Check the Drive Belt for wear and hard spots.

·The Drive Belt may be stretched; replace it.

·The Pulleys may be misaligned.

·If the Drive Belt still rolls off the Drive Pulley, call us for assistance.

·The PTO speed is too slow causing the belt to slip. Run the PTO at

540 RPM.

·Check for loose or damaged Drive Belt; replace as needed.

·Check for a dull or damaged Knife; sharpen or replace the Knife.

·Immediately disengage the PTO and shut off the Tractor.

·Turn the Flywheel with a wooden stick to be sure it turns freely.

·Check for a loose Drive Belt.

·Remove any built-up debris from the Chipper Hopper Inlet and

Discharge Chute.

·Check for a dull or damaged Knife; sharpen or replace the Knife.

·The Knife is not properly seated on the flywheel. Loosen the Knife

mounting screws, reset the Knife and tighten the screws.

·If the Drive Belt still rolls off the Drive Pulley, call us for assistance.

·The Knife is dull; sharpen or replace it.

·The gap between the Knife and Wear Plate is too great; adjust the Gap.

·Check PTO RPMs; run PTO at 540 RPM when chipping.
