Limited Warranty
Limited Warranty Statement: SMC Networks, Inc. (“SMC”) warrants its products to be
free from defects in workmanship and materials, under normal use and service, for the
applicable warranty term. All SMC products carry a standard 90-day limited warranty from
the date of purchase from SMC or its Authorized Reseller. SMC may, at its own discretion,
repair or replace any product not operating as warranted with a similar or functionally
equivalent product, during the applicable warranty term. SMC will endeavor to repair or
replace any product returned under warranty within 30 days of receipt of the product.
The standard limited warranty can be upgraded to a Limited Lifetime* warranty by
registering new products within 30 days of purchase from SMC or its Authorized Reseller.
Registration can be accomplished via the enclosed product registration card or online via
the SMC Web site. Failure to register will not affect the standard limited warranty. The
Limited Lifetime warranty covers a product during the Life of that Product, which is
defined as the period of time during which the product is an “Active” SMC product. A
product is considered to be “Active” while it is listed on the current SMC price list. As new
technologies emerge, older technologies become obsolete and SMC will, at its discretion,
replace an older product in its product line with one that incorporates these newer
technologies. At that point, the obsolete product is discontinued and is no longer an
“Active” SMC product. A list of discontinued products with their respective dates of
discontinuance can be found at: http://www.smc.com/smc/pages_html/support.html.
All products that are replaced become the property of SMC. Replacement products may
be either new or reconditioned. Any replaced or repaired product carries either a 30-day
limited warranty or the remainder of the initial warranty, whichever is longer. SMC is not
responsible for any custom software or firmware, configuration information, or memory
data of Customer contained in, stored on, or integrated with any products returned to
SMC pursuant to any warranty. Products returned to SMC should have any
customer-installed accessory or add-on components, such as expansion modules,
removed prior to returning the product for replacement. SMC is not responsible for these
items if they are returned with the product.
Customers must contact SMC for a Return Material Authorization number prior to
returning any product to SMC. Proof of purchase may be required. Any product returned
to SMC without a valid Return Material Authorization (RMA) number clearly marked on
the outside of the package will be returned to customer at customer’s expense. For
warranty claims within North America, please call our toll-free customer support number
at (800) 762-4968. Customers are responsible for all shipping charges from their facility to
SMC. SMC is responsible for return shipping charges from SMC to customer.
WARRANTIES EXCLUSIVE: IF AN SMC PRODUCT DOES NOT OPERATE AS
WARRANTED ABOVE, CUSTOMER’S SOLE REMEDY SHALL BE REPAIR OR

physical and performance-related characteristics, and how to install the card.

Chapter 1: Introduction
The SMC TigerCard™ 10G 10GBASE-T and XFP Ethernet Server Adapters
combine the speed and performance of cutting edge networking with the ease of
deployment and user friendliness of traditional Ethernet. The speed and efficiency of
10G networking coupled with iSCSI support enables converged networking,
reducing cost and the complexity of wiring, and simplifying management. SMC’s
VNIC architecture provides the key to efficient server I/O and is flexible enough to be
applied to multiple server deployment scenarios. These deployment scenarios are:
Kernel Driver – This deployment uses a single instance of a VNIC interface for
standard operating drivers. This interface provides a performance-optimized path
for the kernel TCP/IP stack and contention-free access from the driver, resulting in
extremely low latency and competitive CPU efficiency.
Accelerated Virtual I/O – The second deployment scenario greatly improves I/O
for virtualized operating systems. The SMC VNIC architecture provides thousands
of protected interfaces to the host system, granting any application or virtualized
(guest) operating system direct access to the network hardware. This hypervisor
bypass technology, unique to SMC Ethernet controllers, is the only way to provide
solid I/O performance to virtualized guest operating systems.
Advanced Features
Virtual NIC Support – The core of SMC’s technology. Protected VNIC interfaces
can be instantiated for each running guest operating system or application, giving
it a direct pipeline to the Ethernet network. This architecture provides the most
efficient way to maximize network and CPU efficiency. The SMC Ethernet
controller supports up to 4096 VNIC interfaces.
PCI Express – Implements PCI Express 1.1.
Plug-and-Play – Provides binary compatibility with all data center and HPC
applications.
10 Gigabit Ethernet – 10 times the throughput of 1G Ethernet, 10G enables the
ability to design a cost-effective, high-performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet solution.
iSCSI Support – Reduced TCO (total cost of ownership) for shared storage and
converged fabrics.
iSCSI Acceleration in Virtual Environment – Reduce CPU utilization, lower
networking latency, improved machine utilization, and easier management.
RSS – Receive Side Scaling raises the utilization levels of multi-core servers
dramatically by distributing I/O load across all CPUs and cores.
Advanced Features

IP/UDP/TCP Checksum Offload – Calculation and validation for the checksums
found in IP, TCP and UDP headers. This feature saves a significant amount of
valuable CPU cycles.
Transmit Rate Pacing (per queue) – Provides a mechanism for enforcing
bandwidth quotas across all guest operating systems. Software re-programmable
on-the-fly to allow for adjustment as congestion increases on the network.
Jumbo Frame Rate (9K)Smaller per packet overhead, increased network
utilization.
MSI and MSI-X – Both MSI and MSI-X support enable higher levels of performance
on both legacy and up-to-date systems.
Remote Boot – Support for Etherboot, PXE boot, and Linux® BIOS provides
flexibility in cluster design and diskless servers. A small programmable on-board
ROM contains the boot code that provides this functionality.
IP Flow Filtering – Enables the hardware to steer packets based on IP, TCP, and
UDP header contents.

After unpacking the TigerCard™ 10G Ethernet Server Adapter, check the contents
of the box to be sure you have received the following items:

Driver and Documentation CD
SMC Warranty Registration Card
Low-Profile Bracket
Immediately inform your dealer in the event of any incorrect, missing or damaged
parts. If possible, please retain the carton and original packing materials in case
there is a need to return the product.
Please register this product online at SMC’s web site, http://www.smc.com/. The
SMC TigerCard™ 10G is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

Chapter 2: Hardware Installation
Caution: Network cards are sensitive to static electricity. To protect the card, avoid
touching its electrical components and always touch the metal chassis of
your computer before handling the card.
1. Switch off the computer, unplug the power cord, and remove the computer’s
cover.
2. Select an unused PCI Express (PCIe) bus-master slot and remove its
protective bracket.
3. Carefully insert the card and press until all the edge connectors are firmly
seated inside the slot. Then screw the card’s bracket securely into the PC’s
chassis.
4. Connect the TigerCard™ 10G directly to a network switch.
a. For the 10GBASE-T card, use UTP cable (use appropriate 10GBASE-T
cable; see “UTP Cables” on page B-1). The maximum allowable length of
UTP cable connections is 100 meters (328 ft). When inserting an RJ-45
plug, be sure the tab on the plug clicks into position to ensure that it is
properly seated.
b. For the XFP card, use 9/125 micron single-mode fiber cable, or 50/125 or
62.5/125 micron multimode fiber cable, depending on the XFP transceiver
installed (10GBASE-SR or 10GBASE-LR). For more information, see
“Fiber Cables” on page B-1.

5. Replace the computer’s cover and power it on. The TigerCard™ 10G should be
automatically configured by the host computer’s BIOS. However, if you have an
older computer, you may have to manually configure the computer’s BIOS
settings. See “Troubleshooting” on page A-1.”
Once hardware installation is complete, see Chaper 3 “Driver Installation” for
information on installing the appropriate driver for your operating system.

Chapter 3: Driver Installation
The Driver and Documentation CD that accompanies the TigerCard™ 10G contains
all the operating system drivers supported by this card. See the “RELEASE.TXT” file
on the CD for a list of all drivers. Refer to this guide for instructions on installing
drivers.
Any new or updated drivers can be downloaded from SMC’s Web site,
http://www.smc.com/.
Note: The install procedures in this guide show how to install the
SMC10GPCIe-10BT drivers. The install procedures for the
SMC10GPCIe-XFP drivers are identical.
Windows Driver Installation
Download the following package from the SMC support site:
SMC10GPCIe-10BT: Windows Driver Package
This package contains a Microsoft Windows® Installer (MSI) Setup Wizard for the
Windows drivers.
You will need local administrative privileges on the target machine in order to install
the SMC network drivers. If you do not have administrative privileges on the target
machine, contact your system administrator for assistance.
Driver installation can be performed before or after installing the TigerCard™ 10G
into the target machine. However, SMC recommends users install the
TigerCard™ 10G into the target machine before installing the SMC drivers. The
SMC Setup Wizard can install drivers automatically without requiring you to
manually follow the steps of the “Found New Hardware Wizard.”
1. On the first boot after installing the TigerCard™ 10G into the target machine,
Windows may prompt you with the “Found New Hardware” dialog. Click
"Cancel."
If the “Found New Hardware” dialog appears later during the installation
process, it can be safely ignored.

2. Double click on the MSI installation file.

After a brief pause the Setup Wizard is displayed. Click “Next” to continue with
the installation.
3. The software end-user license agreement is displayed. To install the drivers,
you must indicate you accept this agreement and click “Next.”

4. Select the destination folder for the driver package and click “Next.”
5. No further configuration of the installation process is necessary. Click “Install” to
begin the driver installation.
6. The driver installation process can take a few minutes. The Setup Wizard
displays its status and progress during this period.
