Tohelpavoidpossibledamagetosystemboards,waitfivesecondsafterturningoff
thecomputerbeforeremovingacomponent,removingasystemboard,or

Whenyoudisconnectacable,pullonitsconnectororonitsstrainreliefloop,noton
thecableitself.Somecableshaveaconnectorwithlockingtabs.Ifyouare
disconnectingthistypeofcable,pressinonthelockingtabsbeforedisconnectingthe
cable.Asyoupullconnectorsapart,keepthemevenlyalignedtoavoidbendingany
connectorpins.Also,beforeconnectingacable,makesurebothconnectorsare

PreventingElectrostaticDischarge
Staticelectricitycanharmsystemboards.PerformserviceatanESDworkstationandfollow
properESDproceduretoreducetheriskofdamagetocomponents.Quanmaxstrongly
encouragesyoutofollowproperESDprocedure,whichcanincludewriststrapsandsmocks,
whenservicingequipment.
Youcanalsotakethefollowingstepstopreventdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge(ESD):
Whenunpackingastaticsensitivecomponentfromitsshippingcarton,donotremove
thecomponentsantistaticpackingmaterialuntilyouarereadytoinstallthe
componentinacomputer.Justbeforeunwrappingtheantistaticpackaging,besure
youareatanESDworkstationorgrounded.Thiswilldischargeanystaticelectricity
thatmayhavebuiltupinyourbody.
Whentransportingasensitivecomponent,firstplaceitinanantistaticcontaineror
packaging.

Unpacking
Whenunpacking,followthesesteps:
1. Afteropeningthebox,saveitandthepackingmaterialforpossiblefuture
shipment.
2. Removeallitemsfromthebox.Ifanyitemslistedonthepurchaseorderare
missing,notifyQuanmaxcustomerserviceimmediately.

MaintainingYourComputer
EnvironmentalFactors
Temperature
Theambienttemper aturewithinanenclosuremaybegreaterthanroomambient
temperature.Installationinanenclosureshouldbesuchthattheamountofairflow
requiredforsafeoperationisnotcompromised.Considerationshouldbegiventothe
maximumratedambienttemperature.Overheatingcancauseavarietyofproblems,
includingprematureagingandfailureofchipsormechanicalfailureofdevices.
Ifthesystemhasbeenexposedtoabnormallycoldtemperatures,allowatwohour
warmupperiodtobringituptonormaloperatingtemperaturebeforeturningiton.

systemcanresultinelectricalshorts,whichcancauseseriousdamagetothesystem.
Buildingsinwhichclimateiscontrolledusuallymaintainanacceptablelevelof
humidityforsystemequipment.However,ifasystemislocatedinanunusuallyhumid
location,adehumidifiercanbeusedtomaintainthehumiditywithinanacceptable
range.Refertothe“Specifications”sectionofthisusersguidefortheoperatingand
storagehumidityspecifications.
Altitude
Operatingasystematahighaltitude(lowpressure)reducestheefficiencyofthe
coolingfanstocoolthesystem.Thiscancauseelectricalproblemsrelatedtoarcing
andcoronaeff ects.Thisconditioncanalsocausesealedcomponentswithinte rnal
pressure,suchaselectrolyticcapacitors,tofailorperformatreducedefficiency.
PowerProtection
Thegreatestthreatstoasystem’ssupplyofpowerarepowerloss,powerspikes,and
powersurgescausedbyelectricalstorms,whichinterruptsystemoperationand/or
damagesystemcomponents.Toprotectyoursystem,alwaysproperlygroundpowercables
andoneofthefollowingdevices.
SurgeProtector
Surgeprotectorsareav ailableinavarietyoftypesandusuallyprovidealevelof
protectionproportionalwiththecostofthedevice.Surgeprotectorspreventvoltage
spikesfromenteringasystemthroughtheACpowercord.Surgeprotectors,however,
donotofferprotectionagainstbrownouts,whichoccurwhenthevoltagedropsmore
than20percentbelowthenormalAClinevoltagelevel.
LineConditioner
Lineconditionersgobeyondtheovervoltageprotectionofsurgeprotectors.Line
conditionerskeepasystem’sACpowersourcevoltageatafairlyconstantleveland,
therefore,canhandlebrownouts.Becauseofthisaddedprotection,lineconditioners
costmorethansurgeprotectors.However,lineconditionerscannotprotectagainsta
completelossofpower.
UninterruptiblePowerSupply
Uninterruptiblepowersupply(UPS)systemsofferthemostcompleteprotection
againstvariationsonpowerbecausetheyusebatterypowertokeeptheserver

runningwhenACpowerislost.ThebatteryischargedbytheACpowerwhileitis
available,sowhenACpowerislost,thebatterycanprovidepowertothesystemfora
limitedamountoftime,dependingontheUPSsystem.
UPSsystemsrangeinpricefromafewhundreddollarstoseveralthousanddollars,
withthemoreexpensiveunitsallowingyoutorunlargersystemsforalongerperiod
oftimewhenACpowerislost.UPSsystemsthatprovideonly5minutesofbattery
powerletyouconductanorderlyshutdownofthesystem,butarenotintendedto
providecontinuedoperation.SurgeprotectorsshouldbeusedwithallUPSsystems,
