This manual provides information and procedures to safely operate
and maintain this Wacker model. For your own safety and protection
from injury, carefully read, understand and observe the safety
instructions described in this manual.

This manual contains important safety information and
should be read carefully before using the machine.
The operating and maintenance instructions in this manual
have been provided to ensure safe, efficient use of the
machine for the purposes for which it was designed.
The purpose of this manual is to provide owners and
operators with safe, efficient instructions for the use and
maintenance of the tandem roller. Following these
instructions will safeguard operator safety, reduce repair
costs and downtime and ensure a long, productive
machine life.
This manual must be complete and fully legible and must
be kept where it is immediately available to machine
operators and maintenance staff. Operators and
maintenance staff must be informed of the location of this
manual.
These operating and maintenance instructions are
delivered by your Wacker dealer together with the machine
to ensure that they are read and understood fully. If any
parts of this manual are not clear, do not hesitate to
contact your nearest Wacker dealer for clarification. A full
understanding of the instructions in this manual is your
best guarantee of safe operation.
Carry out the daily maintenance operations as required
and keep a record of the working hours completed by the
machine.
Only use original Wacker spare parts. Original spares
can be obtained from a Wacker area agent who will also
provide advice and instructions on their fitting and use.
Fitting non-original spare parts may cause damage to
other components. We recommend that you obtain your
spare parts exclusively from an authorised Wacker agent
or dealer.
Working conditions world-wide vary greatly and it is
impossible therefore to guarantee that this manual will
cover all the situations likely to be encountered. While
every attempt has been made to ensure that this manual
is up to date, Wacker declines all responsibility for loss or
damage arising out of published material or any errors
and omissions therein. If the machine is to be used in
particularly heavy conditions, we recommend that you

1.1 Safety Notes

WARNING
1.3 Laws Pertaining to Spark Arresters
Notice: Some states require that in certain locations, spark arresters be used on internal combustion engines. A spark
arrester is a device designed to prevent the discharge of sparks or flames from the engine exhaust. It is often required
when operating equipment on forested land to reduce the risk of fires. Consult the engine distributor or local authorities
and make sure you comply with regulations regarding spark arresters.
1.2 Application
This machine is designed as a lightweight roller to be used in the compaction of sublayers and finish layers of asphalt
on roads, driveways, parking lots, and other types of asphalt-covered surfaces. Do not use this machine for any other
purpose.

1.4 Operating Safety
Familiarity and proper training are required for the safe operation of mechanical equipment! Equipment operated
improperly or by untrained personnel can be dangerous! Read the operating instructions in both this manual and the
engine manual and familiarize yourself with the location and proper use of all controls. Inexperienced operators should
receive instruction from someone familiar with the equipment before being allowed to operate the machine.
ALWAYS disengage and stow locking bar for the
articulated joint before operating machine. The ma-
chine cannot be steered when the locking bar is
engaged.
ALWAYS check that all controls are functioning prop-
erly immediately after start-up! DO NOT operate
machine unless all controls operate correctly.
ALWAYS remain aware of changing positions and
movement of other equipment and personnel on the
jobsite.
DO NOT attempt to start the machine when standing
alongside. Only start the engine when seated in the
driver's seat and with the forward-reverse lever in the
neutral position.
ALWAYS remain aware of changing surface condi-
tions and use extra care when operating over uneven
ground, on hills, or over soft or coarse material. The
machine could shift or slide unexpectedly.
ALWAYS use caution when operating near the edges
of pits, trenches or platforms. Check to be sure ground
surface is stable enough to support the weight of the
machine and that there is no danger of the roller
sliding, falling or tipping.
ALWAYS wear protective clothing when operating
equipment. Wear goggles or safety glasses, hearing
protection, safety helmet and work gloves.
ALWAYS keep hands, feet, and loose clothing away
from moving parts of equipment.
ALWAYS read, understand, and follow procedures in
Operators Manual before attempting to operate equip-
ment.
WARNING
ALWAYS store equipment properly when it is not
being used. Equipment should be stored in a clean,
dry location out of the reach of children.
ALWAYS operate machine with all safety devices
and guards in place and in working order.
ALWAYS be sure that all other persons are at a safe
distance from the machine. Stop the machine if
people step into the working area of the machine.
NEVER allow improperly trained people to operate
this equipment. People operating this equipment must
be familiar with the potential risks and hazards asso-
ciated with it.
NEVER touch engine or muffler while machine is
operating or immediately after it has been turned off.
These areas get hot and may cause burns.
NEVER use accessories or attachments which are
not recommended by WACKER for this equipment.
Damage to equipment and/or injury to user may
result.
NEVER leave machine running unattended.
NEVER operate a defective unit in need of service or
repair.
NEVER operate with fuel cap loose or missing.
NEVER carry passengers. Danger of crushing
keep clear of the central steering joint between the
front and rear frames.
NEVER use or attempt to repair damaged safety belts
or ROPS. Replace only with WACKER spare parts.

WARNING
1.5 Service Safety
Poorly maintained equipment can become a safety hazard! In order for the equipment to operate safely and properly
over a long period of time, periodic maintenance and occasional repairs are necessary. Maintenance should only be
performed by suitably trained personnel.
DO NOT stand under the machine while it is being
hoisted or moved.
DO NOT get onto the machine while it is being hoisted
or moved.
DO NOT use the machine as a ladder. Use safe
ladders and platforms designed for this purpose.
DO NOT attempt to clean or service machine while
it is running, the engine is hot, or the machine is
moving. Rotating parts can cause severe injury.
DO NOT use gasoline or other types of fuels or
flammable solvents to clean parts, especially in en-
closed areas. Fumes from fuels and solvents can
accumulate and become explosive.
DO NOT modify the equipment without express writ-
ten approval of the manufacturer.
DO NOT modify, weld or drill safety frames (ROPS)
fitted as original equipment. DO NOT loosen or
remove bolts. DO NOT weld, drill or modify a broken
safety frame.
ALWAYS keep area around muffler free of debris
such as leaves, paper, cartons, etc. A hot muffler
could ignite them, starting a fire.
ALWAYS replace worn or damaged components
with spare parts designed and recommended by
WACKER for servicing this machine.
ALWAYS keep machine clean and labels legible.
Replace all missing and hard-to-read labels. Labels
provide important operating instructions and warn
of dangers and hazards.
ALWAYS check and tighten all external fasteners
at regular intervals.
Before starting any maintenance operations, switch
off the machine and remove the ignition keys from
the control panel.
Switch off the power supply at the isolator before
adjusting or maintaining the electrical equipment.
Before you start the machine, ensure that all tools
have been removed from the machine and that
replacement parts and adjusters are firmly tight-
ened.
Before dismantling hydraulic connectors or hoses,
ensure that all pressure has been bled from the
circuit.
Fluid leaks from small holes are often practically
invisible. DO NOT use your bare hands to check for
leaks. Check for leaks using a piece of cardboard
or wood.

DO NOT refuel engine near open flame.
DO NOT spill fuel when refueling engine.
DO NOT operate near open flames.
ALWAYS refill fuel tank in well-ventilated area.
ALWAYS replace fuel tank cap after refueling.
ALWAYS keep area around hot exhaust pipes free
of debris to reduce the chance of an accidental fire.
DO NOT run machine indoors or in an enclosed area
unless adequate ventilation, through such items as
exhaust fans or hoses, is provided. Exhaust gas from
the engine contains poisonous carbon monoxide
gas; exposure to carbon monoxide can cause loss of
consciousness and may lead to death.
DO NOT smoke while operating machine.
DO NOT smoke when refueling engine.
DO NOT refuel hot or running engine.

1.12 Main Features
The RD10 incorporates the following features:
Drive on both drums.
Vibration on the rear drum only.
Central steering joint.
Hydrostatic series transmission.
Hydraulic series powered vibration.
Servo-assisted steering.
Negative hydraulic brakes on both drums.
Water sprinkler equipment on both drums.
Lighting and electrical equipment to highway code
standard.
Stainless steel water tank.
Speeds from 03.7 mph (6.0 kph).
1.17 Driving Position
The driving position has a large, comfortable seat provid-
ing good visibility to both sides of the machine. The
steering wheel has a knob. The dashboard houses the
ignition key, an electric hour meter and the engine
warning lights. The forward-reverse, brake, and accel-
erator levers are ergonomically positioned.
1.13 Hydraulic Equipment
The hydrostatic drive of the transmission and vibrating
systems is protected by an oil cooler and filters. The
transmission filter has a filter clogged indicator (a
vacuum gauge) on the inlet side of the pump.
1.19 Electrical Equipment
The electrical system is powered by a 12 Volt, 48 Ah
battery. The vehicle is fitted with a complete set of road
and work lights.
1.15 Chassis
The chassis consists of two half-frames linked by a
central steering joint. The front half-frame carries the
engine and transmission equipment and one of the drive/
exciter drums. The rear half-frame carries the driving
controls, the water tank and a drive/exciter drum.
1.14 Engine
The machine has an air-cooled diesel engine with electric
starter. The engine powers the hydraulic pump for the
steering and exciter equipment and the hydraulic trans-
mission pump.
1.16 Steering
A hydraulic gear pump drives the ORBITROL steering
servo which is controlled by the steering wheel. The
steering servo feeds oil to the double-acting steering
cylinders. In the event of a drop or failure in the pressure
supplied by the hydraulic gear pump, the steering will
continue to operate because the ORBITROL servo unit
will also act as a pump.
Turning the steering wheel G to the left or to the right
causes a corresponding movement of the front half-
frame. The steering joint between the two half-frames
has been designed so that the tracks made by the front
and rear drums are identical on all turning circles.

1.18 Operator Presence System
The machine is fitted with a safety device which locks the
engine transmission when the driver stands up or leaves
the drivers seat. The machine can therefore only be
driven when the driver is seated.

1.20 Transmission
Both roller drums are driven. A variable displacement
pump and hydrostatic transmission drive the hydraulic
motors fitted to each drum. Forward and reverse travel
are selected using a forward-reverse lever located to the
side of the drivers seat. In order to comply with safety
standards, the machine has a safety device which only
enables starting of the diesel engine when the forward-
reverse lever is in the neutral position.

Shift the lever F into Forward A or Reverse I according

An increase or decrease in road speed is obtained by
moving the lever forwards or backwards; road speed
varies from ZERO to a permitted maximum of 3.7 mph
(6.0 kph) Road speed is the same in both Forward and
Reverse. If you wish to change direction of travel from
FORWARD to REVERSE or vice versa, move the lever
to the "N neutral position, allow the vehicle to come to a
complete stop, then move the lever in the direction
desired. The lever runs in a slider which prevents any
sudden inversion of the lever. The end of this lever is also
fitted with a switch R for the exciter pump.
Note: The machine is equipped with an "operator pres-
ence system". This "system" permits the machine to
move only when the operator is seated in the driving
position. The machine's motion is suspended when the
operator rises from the driving position consequently
activating the negative brake.
To restart:
sit down in the driving position
place forward/reverse lever into neutral
operate forward/reverse lever.
When negotiating gentle slopes, keep the engine at high
rpm's and the Forward/Reverse lever at the minimum
position.
The maximum gradient for this vehicle is 40% or 30% with
the exciter operating. Vehicle speed must also be regu-
lated in accordance with current ground conditions and
vehicle road holding ability.
CAUTION: This vehicle has a hydrostatic transmission
which means that the Forward/Reverse lever can also be
used as an engine brake. Shifting the lever to the neutral
position stops the vehicle.

1.21 Exciter System
The exciter is electrically controlled and operates on the
rear drum. The exciter is driven by a gear pump. The
hydraulic motor, fitted to one side of the rear drum, is
splined onto the shaft of an eccentric weight by an
overload coupling. A switch on the forward-reverse lever
operates the exciter. The vehicle chassis is isolated from
vibrations by a series of shockmounts.
Exciter ON/OFF switch
To start vibration, turn the switch R to position 1.
To stop vibration, turn the switch R to position 0.
CAUTION: Do not keep the vibration running when the
vehicle is to remain stationary for some time.
Keeping the exciter on for a prolonged period when the
machine is stationary may cause serious damage to the
exciter equipment.

1.22 Braking System
The machine is fitted with negative brakes. Negative
brakes are automatically applied when there is no hy-
draulic system pressure. Hydraulic system pressure falls
when the forward-reverse lever is moved to the 0
(neutral position), when the diesel engine is switched off,
or when there is a fault in the hydraulic system.
Service brake: this hydrostatic brake is applied when the
forward-reverse lever is moved to its central neutral
position.
Safety and parking brake: there is a multi-disc mechani-
cal brake on each drum. The brake is controlled by a
pushbutton. In the event of a pressure failure in the
hydraulic braking circuit, the brakes automatically switch
to the on position.
The pushbutton H is electronic and operates the brake of
the hydraulic drive motor.
Position 1 - Brake on
Position 2 - Brake off
The Brake ON warning light M comes on when the
lever H is in position 1.
Note:
Negative brakes are automatically applied when
there is no hydraulic system pressure. Hydraulic system
pressure falls when the diesel engine is switched off or
when there is a fault in the hydrostatic transmission.
CAUTION: Do not use the parking or emergency brakes
when the machine is moving. The parking or emergency
brakes can only be used when the machine is moving in
cases of extreme emergency, i.e. following failure of the
main braking system (moving the Forward/Reverse lever
to the neutral position) or on slopes.

This lever A adjusts the rpm of the diesel engine between
two positions:
Position Min - minimum throttle
Position Max - maximum throttle
When starting the engine, move the lever forward to the
first 1/4 of its total travel.
