ENPRECAUTION
GENERAL PRECAUTION
The apparatus described in this manual is a device subject to pressure installed in systems under pressure;
 Theapparatusinquesonisnormallyinstalledinsystemsfortransporngammablegases(naturalgas,forexaple).
PRECAUTION FOR THE OPERATORS
Beforeproceedingwithinstallaon,commissioningormaintenance,operatorsmust:
• Examinethesafetyprovisionsapplicabletotheinstallaoninwhichtheymustwork;
• Obtaintheauthorisaonsnecessaryforworkingwhenrequired;
• Usethenecessarymeansofindividualprotecon(helmet,goggles,etc.);
• Ensurethattheareainwhichtheyoperateisedwiththemeansofcollecveproteconenvisagedand
withthenecessarysafetyindicaons.
PACKING
Thepackingfortransportaonofequipmentandofrelevantsparepartsaredesignedandshapedtoavoiddamageto
anypartduringtransportaon,warehousingandhandlingacvies.Thereforetheequipmentandsparepartsshallbe
keptintotheirpackingunltheirinstallaoninthenalsite.Aerpackingisopen,checkthatnodamageoccurredto
anygoods.Ifdamageoccurredinformthesupplierandkeeppackingforanyvericaon.
HANDLING
Thehandlingoftheapparatusandofitscomponentsmustonlybecarriedoutaerensuringthattheliinggearis
adequatefortheloadstoli(liingcapacityandfunconality).Theapparatusmustbehandledusingtheliingpoints
providedontheapparatusitself.
Motorisedmeansmustonlybeusedbythepersonsinchargeofthem.
INSTALLATION
Theinstallaonofthepressureregulatorhastooccurincompliancewiththeprovisions(lawsorstandards)inforcein
theplaceofinstallaon.
Indetail,naturalgasplantshavetoshowfeaturesincompliancewiththelawprovisionsandstandardrequirementsin
forceintheplaceofinstallaonoratleaseincompliancewithstandardsEN12186orEN12279;indetail,itisneces-
sarytomeettheprovisionsofparagraphs6.2,7.5.2,7.7,9.3ofthestandardEN12186and6.2,7.4,7.6,9.3oftheEN
12279standard.Theinstallaonincompliancewithsuchstandardsminimizestheriskofrehazardandtheformaon
ofpotenallyexplosiveatmospheres.
Thevalveisnotequippedwithexternalpressurelimitaondevices;therefore,ithastobeinstalledmakingsurethat
theoperangpressureof theassembly on whichit is installeddoesnot exceedthemaximumallowablepressure
(PS).
Therefore,theuser,asdeemednecessarybythesame,shallinstallontheassemblysuitablepressurelimitaonsy-
stems,aswellasprovidetheplantwithsuitablereliefordrainsystemsinordertodischargethepressureanduid
containedintheplantbeforeproceedingwithanyinspeconandmaintenanceacvity.
Iftheinstallaonoftheapparatusrequirestheapplicaonofcompressionngsintheeld,thesemustbeinstalled
followingtheinstruconsofthemanufacturerofthengsthemselves.Thechoiceofthengmustbecompable
withtheusespeciedfortheapparatusandwiththespecicaonsofthesystemwhenenvisaged..
START UP
Commissioningmustbecarriedoutbyadequatelytrainedpersonnel.
Duringthecommissioningacvies,thepersonnelnotstrictlynecessarymustbeorderedawayandtheno-goarea
mustbeproperlysignalled(signs,barriers,etc.).
Checkthatthesengsoftheapparatusarethoserequested;ifnecessary,resetthemtotherequiredvaluesinaccor-
dancewiththeproceduresindicatedinthemanual.
Whencommissioning,therisksassociatedwithanydischargesintotheatmosphereofammableornoxiousgases
mustbeassessed.
Ininstallaonsinnaturalgasdistribuonnetworks,theriskoftheformaonofexplosivemixtures(gas/air)insidethe
pipingmustbeconsidered.
COMPLIANCE WITH DIRECTIVE 2014/68/EU (PED)
TheSQD-1regulatorsareclassiedasFailOpenregulatorsandasIntegralStrength(IS)accordingtoEN334andare
thereforedeniedassafetyaccessoriesaccordingtoDirecve2014/68/EU(PED).

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Thescopeofthismanualistoprovidetheessenalinformaonfortheinstallaon,commissioning,disassembly,re-
assemblyandmaintenanceofSQD-1regulators.
Itisalsoappropriatetoprovideabriefillustraonofthemainfeaturesoftheregulatorandofitsaccessories.
1.1 MAIN FEATURES
The SQD-1pressureregulatorisapressureregulatorforpreviouslycleanedgaseousuidsandissuitableformedium
andlowpressures.
The SQD-1isanormallyopenregulatorandconsequentlyopensintheeventof:
- Breakageofthemaindiaphragm;
- Noregulatedpressuresignal.
Themainspecicaonsofthisregulatorare:

Theupstreampressure,althoughitisvariable,hasnotanyinuenceonthebalanceoftheobturator3,sincethislaer,
duetothepresenceoftheholeA,isposionedbetweentwoequalpressuresacngonequalsurfaces.
Themovementofthediaphragm9istransmiedbytheleversystem13tothestem9andhencetotheobturator3.
Theobturator3isedwithavulcanizedrubbergaskettoensureperfectghtnesswithzeroowratedemand.
If,duringoperaon,thedownstreampressuredrops,theforceitexertsonthediaphragm19becomeslowerthanthe
loadofthespring43.Thediaphragmthereforedropsand,bymeansoftheleversystem13,pullstheobturator3away
fromthevalveseat2.Thegasow,therefore,increasesunltheinialpressureset-pointisrestored.
If,ontheotherhand,thedownstreampressurebeginstoincrease,theforceexertedonthediaphragm19exceeds
theloadthespring43.Theobturatoristhereforedisplacedtowardstheclosedposion,returningthedownstream
pressuretheset-point.
Innormalworkingcondions,theobturator3isposionedinsuchawayastomaintainthepressurePdaroundthe
selectedset-point.
Toadjust thepressureset-pointyouconturn theinternaladjustmentring 28appropriately,clockwisetoincrease
andanclockwisetoreduceit.Normallytheplugisonlyusedthecoverthelowerbandofthevarioussengranges;
theadjusngscrewisusedforthehighervalues.Thepressureregulatorisequippedwithtwoan-pumpingdevices
33and34(g.1),whichareinchargeofslowingdowntheinow/oulowofthegas/airintheheadonlyduringthe
transitoryphases,inordertoavoidpossibleoscillaonphenomenaoftheregulatedpressure.
TherearealsotwostopsV1andV2forthepurposeofeliminangdamagingeectswhichcouldderivefromaccidental
over-pressuresbelowthediaphragm19orfromoverloadingofthespring43.
Usually,asoluonofthetypeshowning.2aisadoptedinordertoprotecttheobturatoragainstdamagesresulng
fromsuddenincreasesoftheregulatedpressure.

sulngforexamplefromfastmanoeuvresorgasoverheang,maylettheslam-shutvalvetrip,thesoluon
shownbyg.2acanbetransformed,uponrequest,intoanembeddedreliefvalve,eliminangtheO-ring
73andaddingthering70(g.2b).
Itsoperaonisdescribedasfollows:withclosedregulator,anyoverpressureslithediaphragmprotecon
disc20exceedingtheloadofthesprings42and43.Inthisway,agivenquantyofgasisdischargedthrough

Pressureregulatordoesnotrequireanysupplementaryupstreamsafetyaccessoryforproteconagainstoverpressu-
recomparedwithitsdesignpressurePS,whenupstreamreducingstaonissizedforamaxdownstreamincidental
pressure MIPd≤1,1PS.
Beforeinstallingtheregulatoritisnecessarytoensurethat:
- Theregulatorcanbeinsertedinthespaceprovidedandthatsubsequentmaintenanceoperaonswillbesucien-
tlypraccable(seeoveralldimensionsinFig.3);
- Inletandoutletpipingsmustbeatthesamelevelandabletocarrytheweightoftheregulator(seeFig.3);

Theregulator,whenusedingaspressurereduconstaons,hastobeinstalledatleastaccordingtotherequirements
setforthbythestandardsEN12186orEN12279.Allpointsforpossiblegasreliefduetopossiblebreaksofsensors/
diaphragmsaretobeconveyedaccordingtostandardsEN12186orEN12279.
Thefollowingisrecommendedsoastopreventtheaccumulaonofimpuriesandcondensateinthelinesofthe
pressuretake-o.
a) Thelinesthemselvesmustslopedowntowardsthedownstreampipingwithaslopeofabout5-10%;
b) Theconnectorsonthepipingmustalwaysbeweldedonthetopofthepipingitselfandtheremustbeoburr
orinwardprotrusionsintheholeinthepiping.
Thespeedofthegasmustnotexceedthefollowingvaluesinthepipingdown-streamfromtheregulator:
Vmax=15m/s
ATTENTION!
2.3 DOWNSTREAM VOLUME REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION
InthecaseofaserviceregulatoroftheON-OFFtype(stoppingorstarngofburners),youshouldrememberthat
thoughtheSQD-100apparatusisclassiedasbeingofthefastreacontype,itrequiresanappropriatelydimensioned
volumeofgasbetweentheapparatusitselfandtheburnersoastopartlyabsorbthepressureswingscausedbyfast
owratevariaons.
3.0 MODULARITY
Themodular-typeconceponofSQD-1regulatorsmeansthatitisalsopossibletottheslam-shutincorporatedwith
thebodyitselfevenaertheinstallaonoftheregulator.
3.1 LA/.. INCORPORATED SLAM SHUT
Thisisadevice(g.7and8)whichimmediatelyblocksthegasowif,becauseofsomefailure,thedownstreampres-
surereachesthepointsetforitsintervenon,orifitisactuatedmanually.
WaittheSQD-1pressureregulator,theslam-shutbeincorporatedonboththeserviceregulatororonthein-linemo-
nitor.Threeversions(LA/BP,LA/MPandLA/TR)areavailabledependingontheintervenonpressureranges
Themainfeaturesoftheslam-shutdeviceareasfollows:
• DesignpressurePS:upto20bar;
• Intervenonforpressureincreaseand/ordecrease;
• IntervenonaccuracyAG:±5%ofthesetpointforpressureincrease(basedonseng-pressure);±15%of
 thesetpointforpressuredrop(basedonseng-pressure);
internal by-pass device;
• manualbuon-operatedactuangdevice.

4.1 RELIEF VALVE
Thereliefvalveisasafetydevicewhichreleasesacertainqualityofgastotheexteriorwhenthepressureatthecon-
trolpointexceedstheset-pointasaresultofshort-lasngeventssuchas,forexample,theveryfastclosingoftheon/
ovalvesand/oroverheangofthegaswithzeroowratedemand.Thereleaseofthegastotheexteriorcan,for
example,delayorblocktheintervenonoftheslam-shutvalvesfortransitoryreasonsderivingfromdamagetothe
regulator.
Obviouslythequantyofgasreleaseddependsontheextentoftheoverpressurewithrespecttotheset-point.
Thedierentmodelsofreliefvalvesavailableareallbasedonthesameoperangprinciplewhichisillustratedbelow
withreferencetothevalveVS/AM65(g.8).Itisbasedonthecontrastbetweenthethrustonthediaphragm24
derivingfromthepressureofthegastocontrolandthethrustfromthesengspring20.Theweightofthemobileas-
sembly,thestacthrustandtheresidualdynamicthrustontheobturator4alsocontributetothiscontrast.Whenthe
thrustderivingfromthepressureofthegasexceedsthatofthesengspring,theobturator4israisedandacertain
qualityofgasisreleasedasaresult.
Assoonasthepressuredropsbelowtheset-point,theobturatorreturnstotheclosedposion.

5.1 GENERAL
Aerinstallaon,checkthattheinlet/outleton/ovalves,anyby-passandthebleedcockarecloset.
Beforecommissioning,youmustensurethatthecondionsofusecomplywiththecharacteriscsoftheapparatu-
ses.
Thesecharacteriscsarerecalledbythesymbolsonthespecicaonplatesappliedtoeachapparatus(g.11).
Werecommendactuangtheopeningandclosingvalvesveryslowly.
Theregulatorcouldbedamagedbyoperaonswhicharetoofast.

5.2 GAS INPUT, CONTROL OF EXTERNAL TIGHTNESS AND SETTING
Thepressurizaonoftheequipmentshallbeperformedveryslowly.Shouldnotanystabilizaonprocedurebecarried
out,itisrecommendedtokeepgasspeedinthefeedingpipingatavalueequalto5m/secduringpressurizaon.
Toprotecttheapparatusfromdamage,thefollowingoperaonsmustneverbecarriedout:
• Pressurizaonthroughavalvelocateddownstreamfromtheapparatusitself.
• Depressurizaonthroughavalvelocatedupstreamfromtheapparatusitself.
Externalghtnessisguaranteedifnobubblesformwhenafoammediumisappliedontheelementunderpressure.
Theregulatorandanyotherapparatuses(slam-shut,monitor)arenormallysuppliedalreadysetforthedesiredset-
point.Itispossibleforvariousreasons(e.g.,vibraonduringtransport)forthesengstobechangedwhileremaining
withinthevaluespermiedbythespringsused.
Wethereforerecommendcheckingthesengsusingtheproceduresillustratedbelow.
Ininstallaonconsisngoftwolines,wesuggestcommissioningonelineatame,starngfromtheonewiththe
loverset-point,knownasthe“reserve”line.Theset-pointoftheapparatusesinthelinewillobviouslydeviatefrom
thosespeciedinthetable4.

4) Parallyopentherelieffaucet6placedontheoutletpiping;
5) Check,throughpressuregauge5,thattheoutletpressurehasthegaugingvalueindicatedbytheregulator.
Ifnot,itisthennecessarytoadjustthegaugingvalue,operangontheinternalclamp,rotangitclockwiseto
increaseandan-clockwisetodecrease;
6) Closetherelieffaucet6andcheckthevalueoftheclosurepressure;
7) Usingafoamingagent,checkthecapacityofallthejointsplacedbetweenblockvalvesV1andV2;
8) OpenveryslowlytheoutletblockvalveV2,unlthepipinggetscompletelyfull;
9) Itisadvisabletocheckthat,acvangtheblockvalvemanually,thelinecapacitygetsstopped.
6.0 TROUBLE-SHOOTING
Theproblemsofvariouskindswhichcouldariseovermearehighlightedbelow.Theyderivefromphenomenaasso-
ciatedwiththecondionsofthegasaswell,ofcourse,aswiththenaturalageingandwearofthematerials.
Itmustberememberedhatalloperaonsontheapparatusesmustbecarriedoutbyhighlyqualiedpersonnelwith
appropriateknowledgeofthesubject.Tamperingwiththeapparatusesbyunsuitablepersonnelrelievesusfromall
responsibilityofanykind.
