3 SAFETY

PREPARING FOR SAFE OPERATION

Operator preparation and training

• Become familiar with the

safe operation of the equip-

ment, operator controls and

safety signs. Do not operate

or allow another person to

operate this machine if there

are any questions about

safety.

• If an operator or mechanic cannot read English or one

of the other languages in which this manual is sup-

plied, it is the owner’s responsibility to explain this

material to them. If any portion of this material is

unclear, contact your factory representative for clarifi-

cation.

• All operators and mechanics should be trained. The

owner is responsible for training the users.

• Wear appropriate clothing, including long trousers

and safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields

when operating mower. Do not operate when barefoot

or wearing open sandals. Long hair, loose clothing or

jewelry may get tangled in moving parts.

• Never allow underage children, unskilled or improp-

erly trained people to operate this equipment. Local

regulations can restrict the age of the operator.

• Do not carry passengers, especially small children.

They may fall off and be seriously injured.

• Keep warning labels and this operator’s manual legi-

ble and intact. Replacement labels and manuals are

available from the factory.

• Do not operate machine while under the influence of

drugs or alcohol.

• The owner/user can prevent and is responsible for

accidents or injuries occurring to themselves, other

people or property. Site preparation and circum-

and attachments are needed to properly and safely

perform the job. Only use accessories and attach-

ments approved by the manufacturer.

Machine preparation

• Check operator present interlock system and brake

operation. Adjust or repair any problems before using.

• Never tamper with safety devices. Keep shields and

interlock safety devices in place and in proper working

condition.

• Keep all fasteners such as nuts, bolts and pins well

secured.

• Visually inspect blades, blade bolts and the cutter

assembly for wear or damage. Replace worn or dam-

aged blades and bolts in sets to preserve balance.

• Verify that machine and attachments, if any, are in

good operating condition.

• Do not engage blades until ready to mow.

WARNING

All rotary lawnmowers are potentionally

dangerous. They can amputate hands and

feet and throw objects. Failure to follow

these safety and operating instructions

could result in serious injury or death.

OPERATING SAFELY

In general

• Use extra care when loading or unloading the

machine into a trailer or truck.

• Watch out for traffic when near or crossing roadways.

• Do not run the engine in an enclosed area where dan-

gerous carbon monoxide fumes can collect.

• Do not place your foot on the ground while operating

the machine.

• Before operating, lower the discharge chute, insert the

mulcher or install the entire grass catcher in place.

• Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times.

Never direct the discharge toward a bystander. Stop

operation if someone approaches.

• Keep washout ports and other mower housing service

openings closed when mowing.

• Use care when pulling loads or using heavy equip-

ment.

- Use only approved drawbar hitch points.

- Limit loads to those you can safely control.

- Do not turn sharply. Use care when reversing.

• Use counterweight(s) or wheel weights when sug-

gested in the operator’s manual.

• Never leave a machine unattended. Always turn off

blades, set parking brake, stop engine and remove

keys before dismounting.

Starting

• Start only according to instructions in this manual or

on the machine.

• Before attempting to start the engine, make sure:

- the parking brake is on,

- the PTO is disengaged;

- the drive is in NEUTRAL.

• When starting the engine, make sure hands and feet

are clear of the blades.

• Do not start the machine while standing in front of the

discharge chute or with the chute directed at some-

one.

• Do not engage PTO at full throttle. Throttle to idle or

lowest possible engine speed.

• Do not change engine governor settings or overspeed

the engine. Operating the engine at excessive speed

can increase the hazard of personal injury.

Interrupting operation

• Before leaving the operator’s position:

- Park on level ground.

- Disengage the PTO.

- Set the parking brake.

- Shut off the engine and remove the key.

• Disengage the PTO and wait until the blades quit

rotating:

- before raising cutterdeck;

- when not mowing;

- for transport;

- when crossing surfaces other than grass.

• Stop the engine, disengage the PTO and wait until the

blades quit rotating:

- before refueling;

- before removing grass catcher;

- before making height adjustment unless the

adjustment can be made from the operator’s posi-

tion.

• Stop the engine, disengage the PTO and disconnect

the spark plug wire(s) or remove the key:

- before clearing blockages or unclogging chute;

- before checking, cleaning or working on the

machine;

- after striking a foreign object. Inspect the machine

for damage and make repairs before restarting.

- if the machine begins to vibrate abnormally.

Inspect and make repairs as needed before

restarting;

- except as specifically noted, such as for carburetor

adjustment, where the engine must be running.

Keep hands and feet clear of moving parts in these

circumstances.

• Allow the blades to come to a complete stop when

stopping operation to clear blockages, unclog, inspect

the machine, do maintenance or repair.

• Reduce the throttle setting during engine shut-down

and, if the engine is provided with a shut-off valve,

turn the fuel off at the conclusion of mowing.

MANEUVERING SAFELY

In general

• Slow down before turning.

• Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary.

Always look behind and down for small children and

pets before and during backing.

• Beware when approaching blind corners, shrubs,

trees, tall grass or other objects that may obscure

vision.

• If tires lose traction, disengage the blades. If on a

slope, head down.

Mowing slopes

Slopes are a major factor in loss-

of-control and tipover accidents

that sometimes lead to severe

injury or death. All slopes require

extra caution.

• Do not mow on slopes if

uneasy or uncertain. Ultimate

responsibility for safe opera-

tion on slopes rests with the

operator.

• Do not mow excessively steep slopes.

• With ride-on machines, always mow up and down

slopes, not across.

• With walk-behind machines, always mow across

slopes, not up and down.

• Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires lose trac-

tion, disengage the blade and proceed slowly straight

down the slope.

• Keep all movement on the slopes slow and gradual.

Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction.

• Do not turn on slopes unless necessary, and then turn

slowly and downhill when possible.

• Stay away from slopes if the ground is loose or if

caught in the rain during mowing.

• Use lower speeds on a slope to avoid stopping or

shifting.

• Use extra care with grass catchers or other attach-

ments. These can change the stability of the machine.

• Avoid driving over ruts, holes, rocks and roots when-

ever possible. Be alert to dips and rises. Uneven ter-

rain can overturn a mower or cause it to slide.

• Do not mow dropoffs, ditches or embankments. The

machine could suddenly turn over if a wheel runs over

the edge or an edge caves in.

• Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for wheel

weights or counterweights to improve stability.

MAINTENANCE SAFETY

In General

• Maintain machine according to the manufacturer’s

schedule and instructions for maximum safety and

best mowing results.

• Park Machine on level ground.

• Never allow untrained personnel to service the

machine

• Adjust or repair only after the engine has been

stopped and the blades have quit rotating.

• Inspect grass catcher components regularly. If worn,

damaged or deteriorated, they may expose moving

parts or allow objects to be thrown.

• Replace parts if worn, damaged or faulty. For best

results, always replace with parts recommended by

the manufacturer.

• Disconnect battery or remove spark plug wire(s)

before making any repairs. Disconnect the negative

terminal first and the positive last.

• Do not dismantle the machine without releasing or

restraining forces which may cause parts to move

suddenly.

• Provide adequate support for lifted machine or parts if

working beneath.

• Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts.

• Clean up oil or fuel spillage thoroughly.

• Replace faulty mufflers.

• To reduce fire hazards, keep the engine, muffler, bat-

tery compartment and fuel storage area free of grass,

leaves, debris buildup or grease.

Blades

• Mower blades are sharp and

can cut. Use extra caution

when handling. Remove

obstructions with care. Wrap

the blade(s) or wear gloves.

• Be aware that rotating one

blade on multiblade mowers

can cause other blades to

rotate.

• Only replace blades. Never straighten or weld them.

• Keep other persons away from blades.

Fuel

• Gasoline and diesel fuels are

flammable; gasoline vapors

are explosive. Use extra care

when handling.

• Store only in containers spe-

cifically designed for fuel.

• When refueling or checking

fuel level;

- Stop the engine and allow to cool;

- Do not smoke;

- Refuel outdoors only;

- Use a funnel;

- Do not overfill;

- If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the engine

until the spill is cleaned up and vapors have

cleared.

• Replace caps on fuel cans and tanks securely.

Hydraulic System

The machine’s hydraulic system

operates under high pressure.

• When checking for leaks, do

not use your hands to attempt

to find a leak. Instead use

cardboard or paper.

• Escaping hydraulic fluid can be under sufficient pres-

sure to penetrate skin and cause serious injury.

• If hydraulic fluid is injected into the skin, it must be

promptly removed by a doctor familiar with this form of

injury or gangrene may result.

• Check that all hydraulic fluid connections are tight and

all hydraulic hoses and lines are in good condition

before applying pressure to the system.

Battery

To reduce the risk of personal

injury when working near a

battery:

• When working with battery

acid, always use protective

equipment such as, but not

limited to, goggles, face

shield, rubber gloves and

apron.

• Avoid leaning over a battery.

• Do not expose a battery to open flames or sparks.

• Be sure batteries with filler caps are properly filled

with fluid.

• Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes or skin.

Flush any contacted area with water immediately and

get medical help.

• Charge batteries in an open, well ventilated area,

away from sparks and flames. Unplug charger before

connecting or disconnecting from battery.

STORAGE SAFETY

• Stop the engine and allow to cool before storing.

• Drain the fuel tank outdoors only.

• Store fuel in an approved container in a cool, dry

place.

• Keep the machine and fuel containers in a locked

storage place to prevent tampering and to keep chil-

dren from playing with them.

• When the machine is to be parked, stored or left unat-

tended, lower the cutterdeck unless a positive

mechanical lock is used.

• Do not store the machine or fuel container near heat-

ing appliances with an open flame such as a water

heater or an appliance with a pilot light.

• Keep gasoline storage area free of grass, leaves and

excessive grease to reduce fire hazard. Jump starting

JUMP STARTING

1. Be sure the jumper cables are in good condition.

Turn off the ignition and all electrical accessories on

both machines.

2. Position the machine with a good (charged) battery

next to but not touching the machine with the dead

battery so jumper cables will reach.

3. When making cable connections: - make sure the

clamps do not touch anywhere except to intended

metal parts, - Never connect a positive (“+” or red)

terminal to a negative (“—” or black) terminal. -

Make sure the cables won’t get caught in any parts

after the engines are started.

4. Connect one end of the first jumper cable to the

positive

terminal on one battery. Connect the other

end to the

positive

terminal on the other battery.

5. Connect one end of the other cable to the

negative

terminal of the machine with a good (charged)

battery. Make the final connection on the engine of

the machine to be started, away from the battery.

6. Start the vehicle with the good battery, then the

machine with the discharged battery.

7. Remove the cables in the exact reverse order of

installation. When removing each clamp, take care it

does not touch any other metal parts while the other

end remains attached.

1. Do not operate with horn sounding. Horn will sound to warn of overheated engine or hydraulic system.

5 CONTROLS

5.0 ICONS ____________________________________________________________________

Familiarize yourself with the icons shown below and what

they represent. Learn the location and purpose of all the

controls and gauges before operating this tractor.

Inexperience operation of this tractor

can cause fatal or serious injury.

Do not attempt to drive the tractor unless you have read

the Operator’s Manual and know how to operate all

controls correctly.

5.1 INDICATOR LIGHTS _________________________________________________________

The indicator lights, located on the front console, are part

of the “System Sentry”. These lights indicate important

operating and maintenance information. Before operating

the tractor, be sure you understand the function of each

light and the correct response to it.

Engine Oil Pressure

Indicates low engine oil

pressure. If this light remains ON after starting

engine, or comes ON during operation, shut tractor

down immediately. Check engine oil level..

IMPORTANT:

Continued operation with oil pressure light ON can

damage engine.

Engine Coolant Temperature

Indicates high

engine coolant temperature

In addition to the light

an alarm will sound. Stop cutting and disengage all

drives. Run engine at idle for few minutes until light

goes OFF. If light remains ON, shut tractor off and

allow engine to cool before resuming operation.

Hydraulic System

Indicates low charge oil

pressure in the traction system. If this light remains

ON after starting engine, or comes ON during

operation, shut tractor down immediately.

IMPORTANT:

Continued operation with hydraulic system light

ON can damage hydraulic system components.

Hydraulic System Charge Filter

Indicates that

charge filter (small filter) in hydraulic system is

plugged and must be replaced. Stop cutting and

return tractor to the maintenance area for service.

Hydraulic Oil Temperature

Indicates high

hydraulic oil temperature. In addition to the light an

alarm will sound. Stop cutting and disengage all

drives. Run engine at idle for few minutes until light

goes off. If light remains ON, shut tractor off and

allow hydraulic system to cool before resuming

operation.

Hydraulic System Return Line Filter

Indicates

that return line filter (large filter) is plugged and must

be replaced. Stop cutting and return tractor to

maintenance area immediately.

Air Cleaner

Indicates the that air cleaner needs to

be cleaned or replaced.

Glow Plug

Lights only while depressing the glow

plug switch (X - Figure 5D).

5.2 LEVERS ___________________________________________________________________

Steering Tilt Lock

Use to adjust position of

steering wheel. Push lever forward to lock.

Throttle

Regulates engine speed. Push forward to

increase speed, back to reduce speed. Run engine

at full throttle while operating tractor.

Left

Raise and lower left wing mower.

Center - Raise and lower front mower.

Right

Raise and lower right wing mower.

5.3 SWITCHES _________________________________________________________________

Ignition Switch

Used to start and stop the engine.

The ignition switch has three positions OFF, ON and

START. Read before starting engine.

To prevent unauthorized operation, remove the

ignition key when the tractor is not in use.

To start the tractor, read and follow the start-up

procedures. See Section 6.3.

Implement Switch

Lift up and push forward to

engage. Pull back to disengage. When engaged,

cutting units can be turned on using switches

Do not hold switch longer than seven seconds. See

5.5 PEDALS

Differential Lock

Press pedal down to lock front

wheels into synchronous rotation and prevent

wheels from spinning independently.

Stop machine before pressing

pedal.

Difficult turning can result in

serious injury.

With the differential lock engaged the effort to

turn the tractor is increased and the tractor’s

turning ability is reduced. Stop machine and

release foot pedal to disengage lock before

turning.

Service Brake

Press pedal down to slow or stop

machine.

AF.

Traction Pedal

Controls the direction and speed of

the machine. Slowly depress the top of the pedal

for forward motion or depress lower portion

of the pedal for reverse motion. The pedal will return

to neutral when released.

Use to adjust the ground

pressure of the mowers. See Section 7.8.

Tow Valve

Turn valve to open hydraulic drive

6 OPERATION

6.0 DAILY INSPECTION _________________________________________________________

The Daily Inspection should be

performed only when the engine is

off and all fluids are cold. Lower implements to

the ground, engage parking brake, stop the

engine and remove ignition key.

1. Perform a visual inspection of the entire unit. Look for

signs of wear, loose hardware, and missing or dam-

aged components. Check for fuel or oil leaks.

2. Check the fuel supply, radiator coolant level, crank-

case oil and hydraulic oil. All fluids must be at the

full level mark.

3. Hydraulic oil level should never be out of view on the

lower sight gauge (located on the left-hand side of

oil tank).

4. Test the “System Sentry” to insure all display lights

function.

5. Turn the ignition switch ON then depress test button

(V, Figure 5C). If any light remains on after starting

the engine or turns on during operation, stop the

engine immediately, check for the probable cause.

6. Make sure all mowers are adjusted to the same

cutting height. See Section 8.0.

7. Make sure the hood screen, radiator and oil cooler

fins are clean that the machine was lubricated and

the tires are properly inflated.

8. Test the operator back-up system. See Section 6.1.

6.1 OPERATOR BACKUP SYSTEM ________________________________________________

1. The operator backup system prevents the engine

from starting unless the parking brake is engaged

and the implement switch is off. The system also

stops the engine if the operator leaves the seat with

the implement switch engaged or the parking brake is

disengaged.

Leaving a tractor while it is

running and unattended can

be fatal or cause serious injury.

Never operate equipment with the operator back-

up system disconnected or malfunctioning. Do

not disconnect or bypass any switch.

2. Perform each of the following tests to insure the

operator backup system is functioning properly. Stop

the test and have the system inspected and repaired

if:

● the engine

does not

start in Test 1, or;

● the engine

starts

during Test 2 or 3.

● the engine

continues

to run during Tests 4 or 5.

Test 1

represents normal starting procedure. The

operator is seated, parking brake is engaged and the

implement switch is disengaged.

The engine must be OFF before performing Tests 2

and 3. The engine must not start with either control

in the position shown.

First start the engine in the normal manner then

engage the implement switch for Test 4 or disengage

the parking brake for Test 5 and lift your weight off

the seat for each test.

Lift your weight off the seat. The cutting units must stop rotating

within seven (7) seconds.

6.2 OPERATING PROCEDURE ____________________________________________________

To help prevent injury, always

wear safety glasses, leather

work shoes or boots, a hard hat, and ear

protection.

1. Under no circumstances should the engine be

started with the operator standing next to the tractor.

2. Do not operate tractor or implements with loose,

damaged or missing components. Whenever

possible mow when the grass is dry.

An overturning tractor can be

fatal or cause serious injury.

Seat belts must be worn whenever a ROPS is

installed on the tractor. Always keep seat belt

snugly adjusted. If the tractor is overturning, hold

onto the steering wheel. Do not attempt to jump

out or leave the seat.

3. First mow in a test area to become thoroughly

familiar with the operation of the tractor and control

levers.

4. Study the area to determine the best and safest

operating procedure. Consider the height of the

grass, type of terrain, and condition of the surface.

Each condition will require certain adjustments or

precautions.

5. Never direct discharge of material toward

bystanders, nor allow anyone near the machine

while in operation.

Thrown debris can cause

serious injury.

Pick up all debris you can find before mowing.

Enter a new area cautiously. Always operate at

speeds that allow you to have complete control of

the tractor.

6. Use discretion when mowing near gravel areas

(roadway, parking areas, cart paths, etc). Stones

may be discharged and cause serious injuries to

bystanders and/or property damage.

7. Stop the equipment immediately after striking an

obstruction or if the machine begins to vibrate

abnormally. Have the machine inspected and

repaired before resuming operation.

8. Do not idle engine for long periods of time if not

mowing, heat from the tractor can damage grass.

Stop the engine.

9. If there is any doubt about adequate clearance

between objects when mowing, raise the mowers

and reduce speed until obstacles are cleared.

Leaving a tractor running and

unattended can be fatal or

cause serious injury.

Before you clean, adjust, or repair this

equipment, disengage all drives, lower

implements to the ground, engage parking brake,

stop engine and remove key from ignition switch

to prevent injuries.

6.3 TO START ENGINE __________________________________________________________

Starting assist fluids are very

flammable and can be fatal or

cause serious injury.

Do not use starting assist fluids.

Use of such

fluids in the air intake system may be potentially

explosive or cause a “Runaway” engine condition

and could result in serious engine damage.

1. Adjust the seat and fasten the seat belt.

2. Remove feet from pedals, place implement switch in

“OFF” position.

3. Engage parking brake and set throttle lever

approximately 1/4 to 1/3 throttle. The engine should

be started at low idle.

4. Turn ignition switch to “ON” position.

5. Depress glow plug switch for approximately 7

seconds, then release switch. The colder the

temperature, the longer it will take to energize the

plugs. This step is not necessary when starting a

warm engine.

6. Turn ignition key to “START” position and release as

soon as engine starts. Do not hold key in the start

position for more than 15 seconds at a time. If

engine does not start, turn ignition switch to OFF,

wait 30 seconds and try again.

7. Do not operate engine at high RPM immediately

after starting. The engine oil pressure lamp (

Figure 5A) will be on until the pressure reaches

normal operating level. If the lamp remains on, stop

the engine immediately and have the system

inspected.

When starting at temperatures

below 40°F (4°C), operate the

engine at idle (approx 1000 RPM) for 5 minutes

to prevent damage to engine or hydraulic system.

6.4 TO DRIVE/TRANSPORT

___________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT:

If the tractor is driven on public roads, it must comply with

federal, state and local ordinances. Contact local

authorities for regulations and equipment requirements.

1. Mowers must be raised and locked in the transport

position when driving to and from the area of opera-

tion to prevent stress on the hydraulic system, and/or

damage to the mowers and lift arms.

2. Disengage Implement Switch. Lift mowers to trans-

port position and engage the transport latches. See

Section 6.5.

a. Adjust then lock the steering wheel in position.

b. Set throttle to “FAST”. Engage 2WD function.

c. Release parking brake and slowly depress trac-

tion pedal.

3. Depress switch to activate “Cruise Control”, if

desired. To disengage “Cruise”, tap brake pedal or

use the switch.

4. When shifting from “Forward” to “Reverse”, the

tractor must come to a complete stop before

changing directions and also when changing

between 2WD and 4WD.

Loose or damaged attach-

ments can cause bodily injury.

Do not operate tractor or attachments with loose,

damaged or missing components.

6.5 TRANSPORT MECHANISM ____________________________________________________

Accidental lowering of decks

can be fatal or cause serious

injury.

Do not transport with the arms resting on the

latches. Latches are only used to prevent

accidental lowering of the decks.

1. The wing mowers are equipped with a latch to pre-

vent accidental lowering of the decks during transport

or maintenance operations. The latch knobs are

located on the engine firewall on the right and left of

the driver's seat.

2. Raise the mowers to the fullest extent then push the

latch knobs “in” to secure the mower. The weight of

the mower/lift arm must not rest on the latch.

3. To release the latch, pull the latch knob “out” and

lower the mowers to the ground.

6.6 TO PARK/STOP

____________________________________________________________

1. If an emergency arises and the tractor must be

parked on the area of operation, follow the guidelines

outlined by the grounds superintendent.

If the tractor is parked on an incline, chock or block

the wheels.

2. To park the tractor under normal conditions, disen-

gage

implement switch

then raise and lock the imple-

ments in the transport position and move away from

the area of operation.

3. Select a flat and level area to park.

a. Release traction pedal and depress service

brake pedal, if necessary, to bring the tractor to a

complete stop.

b. Disengage all drives, lower implements to the

ground, reduce throttle to low idle and allow

engine to operate at no load for 2 to 3 minutes.

c. Engage parking brake, stop the engine and

always remove the ignition key.

6.7 TO MOW

__________________________

1. Set Throttle to “FAST” and lower mowers to the

ground. Use the Tachometer to maintain engine

speed at 2800 rpm.

2. To mow, engage Implement Switch then depress

Wing and Center Deck Motor switches.

3. Engage 4-WD switch then slowly depress traction

pedal. When mowing long flat areas you may

engage the cruise control.

a. Cut grass higher than desired the first time so

mower will clear unseen obstructions and will not

scalp if ground is rough.

b. Stop and raise the implement when crossing

paths or roadways. Look out for traffic.

4. For better traction and handling apply differential

lock. Depress and hold pedal (AD - Figure 5E).

a. To disengage differential, drive the tractor straight

forward, release the traction pedal and the differ-

ential.

b. Depress the traction pedal to resume operation.

With the differential lock

engaged, the tractor cannot

turn. Release foot pedal to disengage lock before

turning

5. When operating in reverse and additional power is

required to climb out of a small depression, press

and hold the momentary 4WD - reverse switch.

Leaving a tractor running and

unattended can be fatal or

cause serious injury.

To clear obstructions from mower, disengage

implement switch, engage parking brake, stop

engine and remove key from ignition switch.

THEN remove obstruction.
