1 Safety Regulations
1.1 Correct Use
The MSA Workman Winch is suitable for lifting, lowering and positioning either personnel or materials. It is designed for
use in conjunction with MSA anchorage connectors, fall arresters and other components to make up complete systems
for manriding, work positioning, material handling, emergency rescue and evacuation. MSA components are available
to provide backup fall arrest for all such systems.
The winch is a lifting / lowering / positioning winch only. It is not to be used as a fall arrest device.
WARNING!
Read these user instructions completely and inspect the device before and after each use. Read and heed all labels on
the device. Failure to observe instructions may result in serious or fatal injury. Keep these user instructions in a safe
place, readily accessible to all who may need to use the winch. Require anyone intending to use the winch to read these
user instructions carefully and completely before using it. Periodically read all labels and these user instructions to rein-
force knowledge.
1.2 Training
Purchasers of MSA Bolt D-Ring Anchorage Connectors must ensure that users are familiar with the User Instructions
and are trained by a competent person in:
workplace hazard identification, evaluation and control
selection, inspection, use, storage and maintenance
usage planning including calculation of free and total fall distance; maximum arresting force
compatibility and selection of anchorage/anchorage connectors including connection to help prevent accidental
disengagement (rollout)
proper lanyard/harness connection locations
evacuation and rescue planning and implementation
consequences of improper use
For Confined Space applications:
See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 and ANSI Z117.1.
Periodically (at least annually) assess effectiveness of training and determine the need for retraining or additional
training. Contact MSA for training information.

1.3 Safety and Precautionary Measures
WARNING!
DO NOT exceed the allowable free fall distance as specified by governing standards or subsystem components.
DO NOT exceed the maximum fall arrest forces as specified by governing standards or subsystem components.
Ensure that fall clearance is sufficient to meet governing standards or subsystem component requirements.
Prevent swing falls and impact with objects in or adjacent to the fall path.
Always remove obstructions below the work area to ensure a clear fall path.
Work directly under the anchorage/anchorage connector at all times.
Do not leave the MSA Workman Winch installed in environments which could cause damage or deterioration to the
product.
Refer to section 4.2 "Maintenance and Service" and 5 "Inspection" for care and inspection details.
Sharp edges may cut a lanyard or shock absorber during a fall.
DO NOT use where lanyard or shock absorber may be exposed to sharp or abrasive edges or sheared, expanded metal,
or frame cut steel.
Cover all sharp or abrasive edges with padding or sheathing before working above edge.
Chemical hazards, heat and corrosion may damage the MSA Workman Winch. More frequent inspections are required
in these environments.
Do not use in environments with temperatures greater than 130°F (54°C) or temperatures lower than -40°F (-40°C).
Avoid using MSA Workman Winches adjacent to moving machinery, electrical hazards or abrasive surfaces or in the
presence of excessive heat, open flame or molten metal.
Do not use the MSA Workman Winches near energized equipment of where contact with high voltage power lines may
occur.
Metal components of the MSA Workman Winches may provide a path for electrical current to flow, resulting in an elec-
trical shock or electrocution.
Remove any surface contamination such as, but not limited to, concrete, stucco, roofing material, etc. that could accel-
erate cutting or abrading of attached components.
Keep work area free from debris, obstructions, trip hazards, spills or other hazard which could impair the safe operation
of the fall protection system.
DO NOT alter this equipment or intentionally misuse it.
A full body harness is the only acceptable body holding device that can be used in a fall arrest system.
Do not rely on feel or sound to verify proper snaphook or carabiner engagement. Ensure that gate and keeper are closed
before use.
DO NOT use fall protection equipment for purposes other than those for which it was designed. DO NOT use fall protec-
tion equipment for towing, hoisting or material handling.
DO NOT use the MSA Workman Winches unless a qualified person has inspected the workplace and determined that
identified hazards can neither be eliminated nor exposures to them prevented.
If PPE is resold, it is essential that instructions for use, maintenance, and periodic examination are provided in the
language of destination.
MSA Fall Protection products may not be used while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
RESCUE AND EVACUATION: the user must have a rescue plan and the means at hand to implement it. The plan must
take into account the equipment and specific training necessary to effect prompt rescue under all foreseeable condi-
tions. If the rescue be from a confined space, the provisions of OSHA regulation 1910.146 and ANSI Z117.1 must be
taken into account. It is recommended to provide means for user evacuation without assistance of others. This will
usually reduce the time to get to a safe place and reduce or prevent the risk to rescuers.
Failure to follow these warnings can result in serious personal injury or death.

1.4 Liability Information
MSA accepts no liability in cases where the device has been used inappropriately or not as intended. The selection and
use of the device are the exclusive responsibility of the individual operator.
Product liability claims, warranties and guarantees made by MSA with respect to the device are voided, if it is not used,
serviced or maintained in accordance with the instructions in this manual.
1.5 Warranty
Express Warranty – MSA warrants that the product furnished is free from mechanical defects or faulty
workmanship for a period of one (1) year from first use or eighteen (18) months from date of shipment,
whichever occurs first, provided it is maintained and used in accordance with MSA’s instructions and/or
recommendations. Replacement parts and repairs are warranted for ninety (90) days from the date of
repair of the product or sale of the replacement part, whichever occurs first. MSA shall be released from
all obligations under this warranty in the event repairs or modifications are made by persons other than its
own authorized service personnel or if the warranty claim results from misuse of the product. No agent,
employee or representative of MSA may bind MSA to any affirmation, representation or modification of the
warranty concerning the goods sold under this contract. MSA makes no warranty concerning components
or accessories not manufactured by MSA, but will pass on to the Purchaser all warranties of manufacturers
of such components. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED
OR STATUTORY, AND IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO THE TERMS HEREOF. MSA SPECIFICALLY
DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
Exclusive Remedy - It is expressly agreed that the Purchaser’s sole and exclusive remedy for breach of
the above warranty, for any tortious conduct of MSA, or for any other cause of action, shall be the repair
and/or replacement, at MSA’s option, of any equipment or parts thereof, that after examination by MSA are
proven to be defective. Replacement equipment and/or parts will be provided at no cost to the Purchaser,
F.O.B. Purchaser’s named place of destination. Failure of MSA to successfully repair any nonconforming
product shall not cause the remedy established hereby to fail of its essential purpose.
Exclusion of Consequential Damages Purchaser specifically understands and agrees that under no
circumstances will MSA be liable to Purchaser for economic, special, incidental, or consequential
damages or losses of any kind whatsoever, including but not limited to, loss of anticipated profits and any
other loss caused by reason of the non-operation of the goods. This exclusion is applicable to claims for
breach of warranty, tortious conduct or any other cause of action against MSA.

All Workman winches have several standard features:

2.2 Structure of the Winch
Internal mechanisms of the Winch are protected by the housing. Metal parts are zinc-plated or stainless steel to resist
corrosion. The load end of the line is terminated with a self-locking swivel snaphook which requires two separate and
distinct manipulations to unlock and open the gate. When released, the gate will automatically close and lock.
The winch has a level wind mechanism which helps the guide line to lay and wrap tightly around the drum.
2.3 Function of the Winch
The winch is operated with the standard manual crank handle shown in figure 1. To extract line or lower a load, rotate
the handle in a counterclockwise direction. To retract line or lift a load, rotate the handle in a clockwise direction. To
suspend a load, release the handle. A brake in the drive mechanism inhibits the drum from free wheeling. The brake
operates even when the manual force is removed.
The winch is designed for use with the MSA Workman Tripod. See Fig. 3. The winch serves as the primary lifting-
lowering device for systems which use the tripod to position equipment for confined space entry above the area to be
accessed. The winch mounts to the side of the tripod leg. This position permits operation of the winch by a surface atten-
dant positioned away from the confined space access point, maximizes the usable space in the interior of the tripod and
increases stability by lowering the tripod’s center of gravity.
When installed on the Workman Tripod, a pulley and a carabiner are required for the winch line on the outside of the
tripod head. This permits full use of the interior headroom of the tripod.

3Use
The winch is a lifting / lowering / positioning winch only. It is not to be used as a fall arrest device. Personnel using the
winch for lifting / lowering / positioning must have a backup fall arrest system, such as a SRL with retrieval function or
other MSA SRL, plus a full body harness. When using the winch for personnel, never have more than one person on
the winch at the same time. Never carry personnel and materials at the same time.
WARNING!
Inspect the winch according to the instructions in Section 5 of this manual before and after each use. Also inspect
each component with which the winch will be used according to the instructions accompanying that product. If any
c
omponent is found to be damaged or -altered, immediately remove the system from use. Do not attempt field repair
of equipment, and do not attempt use of the system without first -replacing any damaged or altered component.
Prevent the buildup of slack line that might allow free fall.
To prevent loose coils of line on the drum, always maintain at least 15 lbs (6.75 kg) of tension on the line when paying
it out.
Never leave a load hanging from the winch while the winch is unattended.
Always be sure the line is pulling straight out from the winch drum – never at an angle.
Never exceed the maximum rated loads listed on the winch specification label.
Never alter the mechanics of the winch.
Never use two or more winches to raise or lower a heavier load. Load shifting may place the entire load on one
winch, causing sequential failure of both units.
Always apply loads evenly. Do not jerk or bounce loads as this dynamic loading may generate forces in excess of
the maximum working load.
Each time a load is lifted, first test the winch by lifting the load a few inches.
Always keep hands away from pinch points around load-bearing lines, pulleys and drums during operation.
Always ensure level winding when extracting or retracting line by guiding the line. Use a gloved hand when guiding
the line to avoid cuts and wire slivers. Continually inspect for level winding during operation.
It is critical that the winch operator remains a safe distance away from any fall hazard or load which could cause
injury in the event of a loss of balance on the part of the operator, or in the event of a load fall. When operating the
winch in a fall hazard area, the operator must wear appropriate fall protection equipment connected to an indepen-
dent anchorage.
All labels must be visible and the operator should never come between the winch housing and line. The winch oper-
ator must always operate the winch with the housing and crank between him or herself and the load.
Never install the winch where any member of the work crew must be stationed in line with a tensioned winch line.
Should the line fail, stored energy may cause recoil of the line with sufficient force to cause serious or fatal injury.
Do not use where objects may fall or otherwise interfere with the operation or ability of this device to function prop-
erly.

3.1 Planning the Use
3.1.1 Set up
Erect the tripod according to the tripod instructions. Erect only to height where the tripod head is reachable by the
installer.
Place the winch to the side of the tripod leg.
See Fig. 3 and follow the installation label in section 8.
Extract 9” of winch cable and reeve over the pulley.
Hang carabiner and pulley to tripod head anchors on the side. See Fig. 4. The winch snaphook must be hung
towards the inside of the tripod.
3.1.2 Rescue Plan
Always have a rescue plan when using the winch for lifting or lowering personnel. A fall arrest system should always be
used when lifting or lowering personnel, in case disconnection of the winch line is necessary or in case failure of the
winch or winch anchorage means occurs. A backup lifeline such as a SRL with retrieval function, that raises and lowers,
is recommended to provide immediate rescue capability
3.2 Lowering a Load
When using the winch for lifting / lowering of personnel, an independent fall arrest system is required. The MSA SRL
with retrieval function or other MSA SRL is recommended.
Other fall arrest systems are also available from MSA.
To lower a load with personnel suspended, rotate the crank handle counterclockwise. To extract line from the winch
when there is no suspended load, rotate the handle counterclockwise while pulling on the line with at least 15 pounds
of force. To resume lifting, make clockwise revolutions of the crank handle.
3.3 Suspending a Load
To suspend a load, slowly release the crank handle.
3.4 Lifting a Load
WARNING!
In the event of a fall, lift before lowering to disengage the secondary brake pawls. Lift first at least one half turn of the
drum before attempting to lower. Unless the secondary brake pawls are disengaged after a fall, the winch will not pay
out line.
To lift a load, rotate the crank handle clockwise. A clicking sound will be heard as line is reeled in. When reeling in line,
check to be sure the line wraps evenly and tightly around the drum.

4 Care, Maintenance and Storage
4.1 Cleaning Instructions
Strictly adhere to the cleaning instructions in this section to prevent adverse effects on the materials used in the winch.
Clean the winch periodically with a clean damp (not wet) cloth to remove dirt or contamination which may cause corro-
sion, hamper operation, or diminish readability of the labels. To remove oil or grease, use a mild laundry detergent. Do
not use chemicals, harsh detergents, abrasives, or pressure washers. Never immerse the winch in water or other liquid.
Excessive accumulation of dirt, paint or other foreign matter may prevent proper function of the Winch, and, in severe
cases, weaken the line. Contact MSA with questions concerning product conditions and cleaning. Some environments
may require the winch be disinfected. Contact MSA for aid in determining the proper disinfection procedure for the
specific application.
4.2 Maintenance and Service
Tag damaged equipment or equipment needing maintenance as “UNUSABLE” and remove from service. Repair and
maintenance (other than cleaning) must be performed by an MSA authorized service center. Moving parts of snaphooks
and carabiners may require periodic lubrication with low viscosity penetrating oil. Follow lubricant manufacturer’s
instructions. Do not over-lubricate. Wipe excess with a clean, dry cloth.
4.3 Storage
Store the Winch in a cool, dry and clean place out of direct sunlight. Avoid areas where heat, moisture, light, oil, and
chemicals or their vapors or other degrading elements may be present. Never allow the winch to rest for lengthy periods
of time on concrete or ash floors as lime sulfur and ash can cause corrosion. Store the Winch with line fully retracted.
Equipment which is damaged or in need of maintenance should not be stored in the same area as usable equipment.
Heavily soiled, wet, or otherwise contaminated equipment should be properly maintained (e.g. dried and cleaned) prior
to storage. Prior to using equipment which has been stored for long periods of time, a Formal Inspection should be
performed by a competent person.

5 Inspection
WARNING!
Inspect the winch as instructed on the labels and in this manual. Failure to follow the instructions can result in serious
injury or death.
5.1 Corrective Action
Winches that do not meet the inspection criteria must be tagged “UNUSABLE” and removed from service immediately.
The winch may be repairable. Contact MSA for further information.
5.2 Inspection Frequency
WARNING!
When a test load is needed to allow inspection of any winch function, do not use personnel as a load. Make sure the
area below the winch is free and clear of any obstructions. Always inspect the winch functions prior to each use.
Inspect the winch before each use.
5.2.1 Line Payout and Retrieval
Mount the winch to a suitable anchorage connector (such as the MSA Workman Tripod) to allow operation of the crank.
While maintaining tension on the winch line, rotate the crank counterclockwise to pay the line out. Then rotate the crank
clockwise to check for proper line retrieval. A clicking sound indicates that line retrieval is functioning correctly. Remove
the product from use and return it to MSA if no clicking sound is heard. During line extraction and retraction, check that
the winding guide wraps the line tightly around the drum.
5.2.2 Handle
Check for cracks, bends and corrosion on the handle. Remove the product from use if any of these conditions are found
and contact MSA for a handle replacement.

5.2.3 Labels
Check for presence of all labels shown in Figures 1, 2 and sec
tion 2.5 of these user instructions. See that all labels
are clear not damaged – and legible. Check that the inspection grid date is within the previous six months. If six
months have passed since the previous inspection, remove the product from use for inspection by a competent
person, according to the instructions in section 6 of these user instructions.
5.2.4 Fasteners
Using fingers, check all bolts and nuts on the housing to ensure their tightness. If loose, tighten them. Check to see if
any bolts, nuts or other parts are missing or have been improperly substituted or altered in any way.
5.2.5 Bracket
Look carefully for signs of corrosion, cracks, dents, deformation or ruptures in the installation bracket (see Fig. 1, Fig. 2
and Fig. 3). Minor dents which do not affect function do not require user action.
5.2.6 Housing and Drum
Look carefully for signs of cracks, dents, deformation or ruptures in the housing and drum. Return for service if material
cracks are found. Accidently dropping the unit may lead to some deformation of internal components. Check for signs
that the press plate and drum are rubbing. This will be evidenced by wear on the drum flanges, also the user may expe-
rience uneven resistance when rotating the crank handle. Whenever there is damage that prevents the winch from oper-
ating normally, remove the unit from use. Minor dents or deformations which do not affect function do not require user
action.
5.2.7 Snaphook
Check all parts of the swivel snaphook for signs of alteration, distortion, cracks, deep nicks, dents or cuts. Also check
for indications that the snap has been subjected to intense heat which could affect its strength.
Inspect for signs of corrosion or excess wear and remove the product from use if there is any question whether detected
wear and/or corrosion may affect strength or function.
Check to see that the snap body swivels freely around the bolt connecting it to the snap eye.
5.2.8 Line Fittings
Cable: Check the two ferrules which are inside of the bumper and the metal thimble. If the user’s unit has a splice
as the means of attaching the snaphook, the splice must be completely and tightly tucked with no loops or loose
ends.
Synthetic rope: Check the sewing thread which is inside of the bumper and the plastic thimble. Whenever the sewing
thread is damaged, remove the unit from use. See Fig. 5.

5.3 Formal Inspection
A competent person is an individual designated by an employer who is responsible for the employer’s fall protection
program, and through training and knowledge, is capable of identifying, evaluating, and addressing existing and poten-
tial hazards and who has the authority to take action (see ANSI Z359.0 for further detail). MSA recommends periodic
factory authorized recertification of mechanical devices according to the intervals in the table below. While this is consid-
ered best practice, it is ultimately at the discretion of the competent person. MSA requires periodic competent person
inspection by someone other than the user according to the intervals in the table below or local regulations. This is not
optional.

Record formal inspections in the provided Inspection Log. Punch or indelibly mark the inspection grid attached to the
winch. Do not use a winch with a formal inspection date older than twelve (12) months. Tag winches with formal inspec-
tions that are out of date as “UNUSABLE” and remove them from service until after formal inspection. The safety of
users depends upon the continued efficiency and durability of the winch. MSA recommends keeping a log of formal
inspections for all components in a fall protection system or subsystem.
5.4 Winch with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
The winch includes an RFID chip that can be accessed by an RFID scanner to help track inspection and service infor-
mation. RFID chip locations for applicable products are shown in the figures of section 2 in this manual.

6 Factory Service
6.1 Owner Registration
After the winch is purchased the owner (user) must log on to http://us.msasafety.com/product Registration to register
their product. Registering your product provides MSA with information vital to the maintenance of the device. Be sure
to provide the permanent address and phone number of the owner and not the temporary address and phone number
of a job site or temporary office.
6.2 Factory Service and Repair
Contact MSA service at 1-800-672-2222 to arrange for inspection and service of a winch.
6.3 Re-sale
If this product is re-sold, it is essential for the safety of the user that the reseller provides these user instructions in the
language of the country to which this Winch is to be sold. Contact MSA at 1-800-672-2222 for the availability of instruc-
tions.
6.4 Service and Inspection Logs

A recommends that the winch be formally inspected at least every 6 months, and immediately before it is used to
carry personnel. It is the responsibility of the user and the user’s management to perform timely formal inspections, and
to log such inspections in section 5.
