ThrottleUp ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle
ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand
lightedcarsburnbright.Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe
Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce.Iftheengine
doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot
havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove.Pressthethrottleupfora
fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,
andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrolrockerswitch.Pressingthetopendof
thethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed.Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewill
decreasevoltageandspeed.Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryourelease
thethrottleuntilyoupressitagaintochangethevoltageandspeed.

enginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,muchlikean
automobilecruisecontrol.Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheenginewill
maintainthespeedyouset.
puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe
transformer'sWhistlebuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing
approximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress.Repeatthe1whistle,2
bellscodetoreturnittotheothercondition.
Each
timeyoushutdowntheenginecompletely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeedcontrolon.
Youcanlockyourengineintoadirection(forward,neutral,orreverse)sothatitwillnot
changedirections.Todothis,puttheengineintothedirectionyouwantorintoneutral,to
lockitintoneutral,runitataveryslowcrawl(asslowlyasitwillmovewithouthalting),
andquicklybutfirmlytaptheWhistlebuttononcefollowedbythreequicktapsofthe
Bellbutton,allowingapproximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress.
Theenginewillnotchangedirection(includinggoingintoneutral)untilyourepeatthe1
whistle,3bellscodetoreturntheenginetoitsnormalcondition,eveniftheengineiskept
withoutpowerforextendedperiodsoftime.
Theengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcanoptto
turnitoff.Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincreaseasit
travelsdownward.Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileontherun.
Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeedcontrolis
onthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelforoperation
withspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments.
Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff,
Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitial
neutraluponstart-upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnot
equippedwithspeedcontroltoavoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine.

neoprenetractiontires.Wheelsandtirescanbecleaned
usingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholappliedwitha
cottonswab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid
andacleanragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol.Unplugthetransformerandwipethe
railsofthetrack,turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothonthe
rails.BecausethemanufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,you
shouldcleantherailsafterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmell
duringinitialuseasthecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal).Thereafter,keepaneyeonthe
trackandcleanitwhenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthe
lifeofthetires.
Thissteamlocomotivecontainsasmokeunitthatoutputssmokethroughthesmokestack
ontheboileroftheengine.Thesmokeunitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wickthatsoaksupandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.
Thesmokeisthenforcedoutofthestackby asmallelectricfan.
Withafeweasymaintenancesteps,youshouldenjoytrouble-freesmokeunitoperation
foryears.
Whenpreparingtorunthisengine,add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe
smokestack.WerecommendM.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe,LGB,orLVTSfluids(a

canbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver.

Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive
wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains.

Slipthenewtireontothewheel.Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead
screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.
Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremoveand
reinstallthetire.Otherwiseyourenginewillwobblewhileoperating.
Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove.Usearazorbladetotrimaway
anyexcesstirethatdoesn'tseatitselfinsidethegrooveproperly.

beginstodiminish,addanother10-15dropsofsmoke
fluidorturnthesmokeunitoff.
Whenstoringtheunitforlongperiodsoftime,
youmaywanttoaddabout15dropsoffluidto
preventthewickfromdryingout.
Afterremovingtheenginefromstorage,add
another25dropsoffluid,lettingthewicksoak
upthefluidfor15minutespriortooperation.
Ifyouexperiencepoorornosmokeoutputwhenthesmoke
unitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktoseeifithas
becomehard,blackened,andunabsorbentaroundthe
heatingelement.Removetheboilerasshownbelow.
Removethesmokeunitinspectioncoverfromthe
locomotive'sbody(seeright).Afterremovingthechassis
andinspectioncoverscrews,lifttheinspectionplateaway
andinspectthewick.Ifitisdarklydiscoloredandhard,it
shouldbereplaced.
Toreplacethelightbulbinthelocomotive,followtheboilerremovalinstructionsbelow.
