Description
Description
The SafePace Guardian Standalone Camera System is an entry-level camera system which detects speeds
via an external radar unit and captures images of vehicles that exceed the specified speed threshold. The
system tracks vehicles in one lane only and is ideal for low-volume roads such as campuses and private
communities.
SafePace Guardian Standalone works with SafePace Cloud. Speed-stamped photos as well as all speed data
from your signs are transmitted to SafePace Cloud, which you can access from any device, anywhere via the
internet. This allows you to generate tickets or citations which you can use to warn drivers or enforce speed
limits.

INSTALLING SAFEPACE GUARDIAN STANDALONE

Selecting a Location for your SafePace Guardian Standalone
Selecting a Location for your SafePace Guardian Standalone
The site you select for the camera may vary with the application in which it is being used. However, you
should generally adhere to the following guidelines:
»Choose a location where the line of sight from the camera to the roadway will be uninterrupted. Give
consideration to how the location may develop with time. The following types of questions should be
considered:
Will any trees grow directly in the line of vision?
Is it likely that road traffic signs will be erected in a position that could obstruct the field of view?
»Install the camera directly adjacent to the roadway being targeted.
»In the case of highways you may want to consider a location on the median.
»Be aware that depending on the direction in which the camera is pointed there may be a period of time
(most likely early morning or late afternoon) where the camera may be blinded by sunlight or the license
plate images may tend to be overexposed.
»Mount the camera to a stable and firm structure. Avoid structures that are likely to be affected by wind
or rain. We suggest that you use a 4-inch diameter circular pole, ideally, or a 4-inch × 4-inch wooden
pole.

Positioning your SafePace Guardian Standalone Camera System
Positioning your SafePace Guardian Standalone Camera System
SafePace Guardian Standalone needs to be located at the side of the road being monitored. Depending on
the option you purchased, the camera, radar head and illuminator(optional) should be one of the following:
»Front facing - facing oncoming traffic to capture front license plates
»Rear facing - pointed towards receding traffic to capture rear license plates
In addition the camera should be mounted at a height approximately 2 to 4 meters above the roadbed.
Figure 1: Example of a front facing installation
Figure 2: Example of a rear facing installation
Though you can position SafePace Guardian Standalone on either side of the street, it's best if located on
the side nearest the traffic lanes that will be monitored.
NOTE: Be aware that depending on the direction in which the camera is pointed there may be a period
of time (most likely early morning or late afternoon) where the camera may be blinded by sunlight or
the license plate images may tend to be overexposed..

Mounting a SafePace Guardian Standalone Camera System
Mounting a SafePace Guardian Standalone Camera System
Mounting your SafePace Guardian Standalone Camera System requires that you mount and connect each of
the following components of the system:
»The external radar head
»The Guardian camera
»The (optional) illuminator
Mounting the External Radar
The external radar head comes with a Standard Pole Banding Mounting system. As this is a standard type of
mounting it requires no special knowledge to easily install the sign.
Figure 3: Standard Pole Banding Mounting System
NOTE: The banding straps included are long enough for use with a 5-inch pole. If you want to use a
larger pole, you will need to obtain longer banding straps.
Pointing the External Radar
As you mount the radar, keep in mind that it needs to be pointed differently depending on whether your
SafePace Guardian Standalone is rear-facing or front-facing. If it is rear-facing then you need to point the
radar towards an area of the roadway that is slightly closer than the area the camera is monitoring. If your
SafePace Guardian Standalone is front-facing then you need to point he radar towards an area of the
roadway that is slightly further than the area the camera is monitoring.

Guide
p. 11
Mounting the External Radar
To install the sign using the standard pole banding mounting system:
1. Attach the supplied banding brackets to the top and bottom of the rear of the sign with the supplied
screws as shown below.
TIP: Make sure that both brackets are aligned vertically.
2. Insert the stainless steel banding strap into the bracket and fasten the sign to the pole.
3. Tighten the strap with a nut driver until secure.

Mounting the Camera
Mounting the Camera
You can mount the camera either above or below the external radar head. We recommend that you mount
the camera below the external radar head as this leads to better images for your tickets. However, if the
possibility of vandalism is an issue, we recommend that you mount the camera above the external radar
head, as long as it is not more than 4 meters above the roadbed.
The camera comes with a Pole Banding Mounting system. As this is a standard type of mounting it requires
no special knowledge to easily install the camera.
To install the camera using the pole banding mounting system:
1. Attach the supplied bracket to the rear of the camera with the supplied screws as shown below.
2. Insert the stainless steel banding straps into the bracket and fasten the camera to the pole.
NOTE: The banding straps included are long enough for use with a 5-inch pole. If you want to use a
larger pole, you will need to obtain longer banding straps.
3. Tighten the straps with a nut driver until secure.
WARNING: Though the installation shown above uses only one banding strap, we strongly recommend
that you use two banding straps when you install your camera.

Guide

Mounting the (Optional) Illuminator
Mounting the (Optional) Illuminator
If you also purchased the optional illuminator for night time operation, we recommend that you mount it
either just above or just below the camera.
The illuminator comes with a Pole Banding Mounting system. As this is a standard type of mounting it
requires no special knowledge to easily install the illuminator.
To install the illuminator using the pole banding mounting system:
1. Attach the supplied brackets to the rear of the illuminator with the supplied screws as shown in the
following illustration.
2. Insert the stainless steel banding straps into the bracket and fasten the illuminator to the pole.
NOTE: The banding straps included are long enough for use with a 5-inch pole. If you want to use a
larger pole, you will need to obtain longer banding straps.
3. Tighten the straps with a nut driver until secure.

Connecting the Camera to the External Radar
Connecting the Camera to the External Radar
The external radar also supplies the power for the Guardian camera. The Guardian camera has two cables
that you need to connect to the external radar. There is a power cable and there is an Ethernet cable for
data transfer between the external radar and the camera.
Figure 4: Guardian camera with cables
WARNING: The external radar has two power cables which are used to provide power to the camera and
the (optional) illuminator. Make sure that you do NOT connect these two power connectors to each
other as this could cause irreparable damage to the external radar, as well as lead to personal injury.
To connect the camera to the external radar:
1. Connect the camera's power connector to the matching power connector from the external radar.
A.Align the camera and radar power connectors.
B.Insert the camera connector into the radar power connector.

B.Insert the Ethernet cable from the camera into the radar's Ethernet port.
C.Screw the cover of the Ethernet cable on over the connection. Be careful not to over-tighten it.
Connecting the Illuminator
The illuminator draws its power from the external radar. As such it has a single power cable that you need to
connect to the matching connector on the external radar.
To connect the illuminator:
»Connect the illuminator's power cable with the matching power connector from the external radar.
A.Align the illuminator cable and radar power connector.
